Abstract:We demonstrate a novel optofluidic refractive index (RI) sensor with high sensitivity and wide dynamic range based on partial reflection. Benefited from the divergent incident light and the output fibers with different tilting angles, we have achieved highly sensitive RI sensing in a wide range from 1.33 to 1.37. To investigate the effectiveness of this sensor, we perform a measurement of RI with a resolution of ca. 5.0×10–5 refractive index unit (RIU) for ethylene glycol solutions. Also, we have measured a series of liquid solutions by using different output fibers, achieving a resolution of ca. 0.52 mg/mL for cane surge. The optofluidic RI sensor takes advantage of the high sensitivity, wide dynamic range, small footprint, and low sample consumption, as well as the efficient fluidic sample delivery, making it useful for applications in the food industry.

Abstract:A simple and robust refractive index (RI) sensor based on a Mach-Zehnder interferometer has been demonstrated. A section of optical microfiber drawn from silica fiber is employed as the sensing arm. Because of the evanescent field, a slight change of the ambient RI will lead to the variation of the microfiber propagation constant, which will further change the optical length. In order to compensate the variation of the optical length difference, a tunable optical delay line (ODL) is inserted into the other arm. By measuring the delay of the ODL, the ambient RI can be simply demodulated. A high RI sensitivity of about 7159 mu m/refractive index unit is achieved at microfiber diameter of 2.0 mu m. Abstract:An ultra-compact and sensitive Fabry-Perot interferometer liquid refractive index sensor is presented. The device consists of an inner reflection mirror in single-mode fiber written by femtosecond laser and a hollow-core fiber. Two micro-holes are drilled on the side wall of the hollow-core fiber by femtosecond laser micromachining, which enables the liquid freely enters or leaves the hollow-core cavity. An enhanced and precisely controllable amplification factor can be obtained for the Vernier effect used, which provides an ultra-high refractive index sensitivity of − 73417.9 nm/RIU (refractive index unit). The device has ultra-compact size, simple structure, high sensitivity, and is featured with easy fabrication and good reproducing capability, thus exhibiting high potential in many sensing applications in biomedicine and chemical industry.

Abstract:A Refractive index sensor based on tilted fiber Bragg grating and stimulated Brillouin scattering is proposed and demonstrated. The cladding modes of the tilted fiber Bragg grating is sensitive to the surrounding refractive index and the approach relies on refractive index dependent resonance wavelength shift of the modes. Stimulated Brillouin scattering is introduced to measure the wavelength shift due to its narrow bandwidth, which enhances the wavelength resolution to 0.25 pm and provides much higher refractive index sensitivity than traditional wavelength readout methods. This kind sensor is suitable to sense a very small variation of refractive index and the sensitivities can reach to a resolution of 1.27 × 10(-4) RIU with the refractive index ranging from 1.3405 to 1.4025 and a resolution of 2.49 × 10(-5) RIU ranging from 1.4025 to 1.4219, respectively.

Abstract:A highly sensitive refractive index (RI) sensor with fiber in-line Fabry-Perot interferometers based on vernier effect is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The sensor is fabricated by splicing a short segment of capillary to a commercial single mode fiber (SMF) and then splicing a tiny large mode area fiber to the capillary. There are two micro-channels in the lateral wall of the tube. The sensor exhibits a compact size of less than 1 mm in total length and has the highest RI sensitivity of ~10189.2 nm/RIU within the range of 1.32846 to 1.33327.

Abstract:We present a highly sensitive refractive index (RI) sensor based on an ultra-compact in-fiber Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) with a droplet-shape air-cavity. The droplet-shape air-cavity is fabricated by fusion splicing and single-side fused tapering. The fabricated MZI is with a very short interference arm of similar to 330 mu m and the taper waist diameter of similar to 40 mu m. The interference happens between the silica-cladding mode and the air-core mode. The trough wavelength of the interference with specific order in the transmission spectrum shifts with the change of surrounding refractive index. The experimental results show that this sensor offers high sensitivity (up to 2803.6 nm/RIU at RI similar to 1.42) for RI measurement in the range of 1.3164-1.4270, which match well with the theoretical analysis. High RI sensitivity, high-spatial resolution, temperature insensitivity, easy fabrication, and low-cost make it a competitive RI sensor in the biochemical and physical sensing fields.

Abstract:A U-shaped double-side polished plastic optical fiber (POF) is demonstrated as a liquid refractive index (RI) sensor. The refractive index of glycerinum solutions is identified by the intensity detection on the bending and evanescent wave loss change. Heat treatment and mechanical polishing are adopted to form the symmetrical side-polished POF probe. The processing parameters are experimentally optimized on the power transmittance. The sensitivity of 1541%/RIU (Refractive Index Unit) can be obtained with a resolution of 5.35 × 10−4 in the scope of 1.33–1.39. The favorable temperature characteristic is proved to offer stable RI sensing from 20 to 50 °C. This simple POF sensor has potentials in low-cost visible light intensity RI detection.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a highly sensitive refractive index (RI) sensor based on a novel fiber-optic multi-mode interferometer (MMI), which is formed with a femtosecond-laser-induced in-core negative refractive index modified line in a standard single mode fiber. The proposed MMI structure is directly written with femtosecond laser in one step, which removes the splicing process needed in conventional MMI fabrication and also significantly improves the robustness. This device exhibits a high sensitivity to surrounding refractive index, with a maximum sensitivity up to 10675.9 nm/RIU at the RI range of 1.4484-1.4513. The distinct advantages of high sensitivity, compact, robust and assembly-free all-fiber structure make it attractive for real physical, chemical and biological sensing.

Abstract:A compact and high sensitivity sensor with a fiber-tip structure is proposed and demonstrated for simultaneously liquid refractive index (RI) and temperature sensing. The device is fabricated by inserting a tiny segment of capillary tube between single-mode fibers (SMFs) to form two cascaded Fabry-Perot interferometers (FPIs). The theoretical and experimental results demonstrate that the ambient liquid RI and temperature can be simultaneously determined by the intensity and shift of the resonant wavelength in the reflection spectrum. Our proposed device has the highest RI sensitivity of ~216.37 dB/RIU at the RI value of 1.30; a high spatial resolution owing to its compact size (with dimension <400 μm) makes it promising for high precision bio/chemical sensing applications.

Abstract:A new type of optical refractive-index (RI) sensor is proposed and experimentally demonstrated by using a structure of two single-mode fiber (SMF) Bragg gratings with a multimode fiber (MMF) taper in-between. The loss induced by a mismatch of waveguide structure between SMFs and MMFs is amplified by a tapering process, and is utilized for RI sensing through evanescent field. Experimental results show that the sensor possesses a tailorable sensitivity to the change of external RI and has a good linear response in the simultaneous measurement of external RI and temperature.

Abstract:We present a novel multi-point fiber-optic refractive index (RI) sensor based on two different length coreless fibers spliced between single mode fibers (SMFs). The sensing probe operated based on multimode interference. A multi-point interferometer with 25mm and 30mm coreless fiber is fabricated and the measurement of RI is realized by measuring the wavelength shift of resonance dips in the transmission spectrum of the multi-point interferometer. Experimental characterization for a multi-point refractometer is presented. In the RI range of 1.3288–1.3666, the corresponding RI sensitivities are 148.60nm/RIU and 119.27nm/RIU for each point, respectively. We demonstrate that this multi-point fiber optic interferometer can be used as a simple transducer for RI sensing with comparable sensitivity.

Abstract:We report a miniaturized fiber probe inline reflective interferometer (FPIRI) sensor, with a several mu m-micro-notch cavity fabricated for highly sensitive refractive index measurement. Its sensitivity in liquid is similar to 100 nm/RIU (refractive index unit) near the wavelength of 1550 nm with a high extinction ratio. This probe sensor is very compact, stable, and cheap, offering great potentials for detecting inside sub-wavelength particles or biocells.

Abstract:An open-cavity fiber-optic Fabry-Perot interferometer (FPI) is designed and demonstrated, with a particular consideration for microfluidic refractive index (RI) sensing. The FPI is composed of an etched side-hole fiber (SHF) sandwiched between two single-mode-fibers. Chemical etching method is used to open up the cavity in the SHF. Experimental results show that an optimal RI sensitivity of more than 1250 nm/RI can be achieved with an open-cavity length of 38 μm for the microfluidic RI range from 1.3400 to 1.3470. In addition, the temperature sensitivity can reach an ultralow level of 1.1 pm/°C. The ease of fabrication, capability for in situ measurement, and excellent performance results suggest that the proposed FPI is highly promising as an inline refractometer for temperature-insensitive label-free microfluidic detection and sensing.

Abstract:An internal-and-external-cavity Fabry–Pérot interferometer (IECFPI) model was mathematically constructed. Based on the IECFPI configuration, a crosstalk-free fiber optic sensor for simultaneous measurement of refractive index (RI) and temperature was proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The internal cavity was a silica cavity, while the external one consisted of an open cavity and silica cavity. The open cavity was formed by an offset single-mode fiber (SMF) sandwiched between two sections of SMF, and the silica cavity was formed by a well-cleaved SMF. A sensitivity coefficient (SC) matrix of the proposed sensor was used to determine the RI and temperature by monitoring the wavelength shifts of the envelope and fine fringes. The proposed sensor can be used for simultaneous measurement of RI and temperature based on the inverse of the SC matrix. Experimental results demonstrated that the RI sensitivities for the envelope and fine fringes were 1084.9 and 124.2 nm/RIU, respectively. Temperature sensitivities of 3.5 and 9.8 pm/°C were also achieved for the envelope and fine fringes, respectively. The crosstalk between the RI and temperature was thus eliminated. In addition, the proposed sensor has a compact size, simple fabrication, and an all-fiber structure, making it a potential candidate for many applications, such as the food industry and environment monitoring.

Abstract:A four-wave mixing (FWM)-based refractive index sensor for potential microfluid sensing applications was proposed and analyzed in theory and experiment. The RI sensitivity of 6238.90 nm/RIU was obtained with a highly nonlinear microstructured fiber shortened to 60 mm, and the RI sensing resolution is as high as 2.2 x 10(-5) RIU. By choosing an appropriate wavelength domain, the signal wavelength for RI sensing is considerably more stable, and the sensing figure of merit is much higher than others. Finally, an inline FWM-based microfluid RI sensor with microslot structures constructed by femtosecond laser ablation was fabricated successfully. (C) 2019 The Japan Society of Applied Physics

Abstract:A refractive index (RI) sensor based on micro-nano fiber (MN-fiber) with chirped fiber Bragg grating (CFBG) Fabry–Perot cavity (FP-cavity) for a microfluidic chip has been proposed. A single-mode fiber is drawn by hydrogen flame heading come into MN-fiber. Two CFBGs are written into this MN-fiber by the ultraviolet (UV) laser mask exposure method. One is at the tapered region, another is at the micro-nano region. Then a micro-nano fiber with chirped fiber Bragg grating (MN-CFBGs) FP-cavity sensor is formed. The Bragg reflection wavelengths of two CFBGs are 1620 nm, 3-dB bandwidth are above 50 nm. The reflectance of two CFBGs are 70% and 99%, respectively. The effects of reflectivity and bandwidth of the CFBGs FP-cavity, diameter and length of MN-fiber with this sensor’s optical properties are analysed is and discussed. This sensor is embedded in a microfluidic chip and the MN-fiber region is immersion microfluid in different channels. The experimental results show that refractive index sensitivity of the sensor is –986 nm/refractive index unit (RIU), and the signal of the sensor has little noise. The CFBG-FP sensor not only has high sensitivity and lager measurement range, but also high contrast resonance signal and stability.

Abstract:A compact refractive index sensor is proposed and investigated based on multimode fiber-micro tapered single-mode fiber-multimode fiber (MTSM) structure. The micro tapered single-mode fiber excites the high-order cladding mode and induces a compact size of 2.2 mm. The influence of multimode fiber (MMF) for the interference fringe is studied numerically and verified experimentally. The experimental and simulated results show that the appropriate MMF length is conducive to form a clear interference fringe. At the same time, the results of refractive index test show that the maximal sensitivity reaches 1879.87 nm/RIU under external refractive index of 1.437. Due to the advantages of small size and high sensitivity, the novel fiber sensor has the potential in the application of refractive index sensing. (C) 2020 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:We report an ultrasmall microfiber-probe-based reflective interferometer for highly sensitive liquid refractive index measurement. It has a 3.5 microm micronotch cavity fabricated by focused ion beam micromachining. A sensitivity of 110 nm/RIU (refractive index unit) in liquid is achieved with over 20 dB extinction ratio. Theoretical analysis shows this kind of device is a hybrid of Fabry-Perot and modal interferometers. In comparison with normal fiber interferometers, this probe sensor is very compact, stable, and cheap, offering great potentials for detecting inside sub-wavelength bubbles, droplets, or biocells.

Abstract:A novel high sensitivity all-fiber Fabry-Perot interferometer (FPI) gas refractive index (RI) sensor based on hole-assisted one-core fiber (HAOCF) and Vernier effect was proposed and demonstrated. The sensor is fabricated by splicing a section of HAOCF to a section of silica tube (ST) fused with the lead-in single-mode fiber (SMF), ensuring that the sensor is composed of an air-cavity FPI and a silica-cavity FPI. The cascaded dual-cavities generate the Vernier effect due to a similar free spectrum range (FSR), which significantly improve the sensitivity of the sensor. Owing to the air hole in the cladding of the HAOCF, gases with different RI can enter or leave the in-fiber air cavity, which makes the device usable as a gas RI sensor. The sensor was used to monitor the RI changes of air with different pressures and provided a high sensitivity of −9462.4 nm/RIU. The proposed sensor has a potential to find further applications in the fields of gas composition detection, medical diagnostics and environmental monitoring.

Abstract:<p>A simple, highly sensitive, and all-fiber four-tapered Mach-Zehnder interferometer (FTMZI) refractive index (RI) sensor was proposed and experimentally demonstrated, which was fabricated by simply and repeatedly discharging a small section of single-mode fiber (SMF). Multiple tapers excite the high-order mode of the fiber cladding, making it sensitive to changes of external RI. The sensor shows a high sensitivity of 987.9 nm/RIU when the external RI changes from 1.330 to 1.346. Furthermore, the thermal response experimental results show that the temperature sensitivity of the sensor is 19.2 pm/°C, and the temperature crosstalk is only 0.00002 RIU/°C, making it a suitable candidate for temperature independent RI sensing.</p>
