Abstract:Reliable emergency communication after coal mining accidents can ensure carrying out effective rescue work and reducing casualties. This paper presents a digital emergency communication method for coal mining accident based on distributed acoustic sensor (DAS). The rescue information such as number of trapped workers and injuries, oxygen content, gas consistency, food surplus and water surplus is encoded into digital signals and modulated into vibration signals, which can be generated by intrinsically safe vibrator and monitored by DAS. Experimental results demonstrate that this method can achieve simultaneous multi-point communication utilizing the existing optical cables under coal mine conditions, with a symbol error rate (SER) of less than 1.25%, showing enormous application potential.

Abstract:Rescue robot places an important role when any severe disaster in underground coal mine happens. To locate and keep a track of miners working in a well becomes an impossible completed mission once the well communication infrastructure is all destroyed due to the disasters such as fire damp explosion. Wireless sensor networks, together with underground mine rescue robot provide a potential solution for the challenges in terms of many unique advantages of the wireless sensor networks like random deployments of nodes and network self-organized multi-hops. In this paper, a new coal-mining wireless sensor network (C-WSN) is developed. We propose a distributed system architecture and an improved location algorithm for rescue robot based on radio signal strength indicator (RSSI). The experimental results are analyzed. Finally, we draw conclusion and address the future work.

Abstract:Underground coal seam mining causes the deformation, failure, and collapse of the overlying rock mass of the coal seam. Suppose the monitoring and early warning of overburden deformation and failure during mining or the emergency response are inappropriate. Mining disasters such as roof falls, water inrush, gas outbursts, and rock bursts will often occur in the working face. To ensure the intrinsic safety of the mining face, it is of great significance to implement full real-time dynamic sensing and whole process intelligent warning of the overlying strata deformation caused by coal mining. A large number of field monitoring test results show that the deformation and failure of the overlying rock and soil mass of the coal seam are discontinuous and nonlinear. Therefore, how to break through the bottleneck of spatio-temporal discontinuous observation of overlying rock deformation and obtain real-time and accurate multi-field data of overlying rock and soil mass of the coal seam has become a critical link in the mechanism research for mining overlying rock deformation and failure. Based on the distributed fiber optic sensing technology, this paper systematically studies the deformation field, temperature field, seepage field, and geoelectric field of the overlying rock and soil mass during the coal mining process, introduces the mechanism, observation technology, research status, and development trend of each physical field in detail, and analyzes the research direction of mine engineering microseismic based on DAS technology, to provide theoretical support for the realization of “transparent” exploration of mine underground space. A safety guarantee system for coal seam overburden during mining integrating sensing, transmission, processing, early warning, and decision-making emergency is established through constructing a fiber optic sensing neural network combined with surface and downhole. The system consists of five modules: real-time sensing, reliable transmission, intelligent processing, instant early warning, and emergency decision-making, which can realize the intelligent sensing of the whole process of overburden deformation and failure during mining as well as the correlation analysis and evaluation of multi-field real-time data. The research results can also provide a reference for the monitoring and evaluation of the geological environment within the mining area and the restoration and treatment.

Abstract:The safety monitoring systems of water, fire, gas, coal dust and roof are independent from each other in one coal mine geographic space, and their data treatment platforms are different and information cannot be shared dynamically among platforms with each other, therefore the coal mine major accident monitoring and alarm technology development is restricted. The coal mine major disasters monitoring and alarm system is based on the exemplary mine to establish or improve the safety monitoring system by monitoring major disasters online, collecting major disasters temporal series, establishing major disasters alarm model and alarm standard system according to the safety regulation and relevant standard, and by applying the GIS and three-dimension visual technology, and by establishing a centralized data treatment platform, the coal mine major disasters integrated monitoring and pre-alarm system can be realized.

Abstract:BOTDR, a kind of distributed fiber optic sensing technology, is employed to monitor the overburden deformation and failure during the coal mining. As an example in Huainan mining area, the layout and the installation technique of the sensing cables for overburden monitoring are designed. The sensing cables are implanted into the overburden by drilling installation technique. The strain distribution of the sensing cables is collected regularly according to the mining schedule. The characteristics and variation of the strain distribution are studied to reveal the relationship between the strain distribution and strata. The strain distribution is not uniform, which is relatively larger in the soft strata, such as mudstone, than that in the hard strata, such as sandstone. The deformation and failure of the overburden are also obtained. Based on the strain distribution and the breakpoint position of the cables, the heights of the caving zone and fractured zone are 12.5 m and 40.0 m respectively with the consideration of the overburden lithology and stratum combination above 13-1 coal seam.

Abstract:An increasing number of tunnel diseases have been appearing due to operating age, geologic changes, material degradation, etc. The deterioration of secondary lining such as concrete cracking and leaking are the most important diseases. At present, the detection of diseases mainly depends on ground penetrating radar, seismic wave method, CT and other techniques which are difficult to monitor the process of degradation and to predict diseases. The Brilliouin optical time domain analysis (BOTDA) is a new technique used to measure and monitor the strain and the temperature along the long-distance optical fiber. As the characteristics of distributed measurement, long distance, high precision and durability, BOTDA is particularly interesting for the life-cycle health monitoring of tunnel. In this paper, 2.5km distributed optical fiber are embedded into concrete of secondary lining by air-blowing and vacuum grouting technique. The experiments are carried out to calibrate the strain measuring accuracy of the embedded optical fiber sensor. The health state of tunnel during construction is established by the data of traditional sensor, and the long-term health monitoring is carried out by strain measured by distributed optical fiber. At last, the health monitoring software owns the function of diseases visual query and real-time data analysis has been introduced.
Research on a Space-Time Continuous Sensing System for Overburden Deformation and Failure during Coal Mining

Abstract:Underground coal mining can cause the deformation, failure, and collapse of the overlying rock mass of a coal seam. If the mining design, monitoring, early warning, or emergency disposal are improper, in that case, it can often lead to mining disasters such as roof falls, water inrush, surface collapse, and ground fissures, seriously threatening the safety of mine engineering and the geological environment protection in mining areas. To ensure the intrinsic security of the entire coal mining process, aspace-time continuous sensing system of overburden deformation and failure was developed, which breaks through the limitations of traditional monitoring methods that characterize the evolution process of overlying rock deformation and ground subsidence. This paper summarizes the classification of typical overburden deformation and failure modes. It researches the space-time continuous sensing of rock-soil mass above the coal seam based on Distributed Fiber Optic Sensing (DFOS). A multi-range strain optical fiber sensing neural series from micron to meter was developed to achieve synchronous sensing of overburden separation, internal micro-cracks, and large rock mass deformation. The sensing cable-rock mass coupling test verified the reliability of the optical fiber monitoring data. The sensing neural network of overburden deformation was constructed using integrated optical fiber layout technology on the ground and underground. Different sensing nerves' performance and application effects in overburden deformation and failure monitoring were compared and analyzed with field monitoring examples. A physical model was used to carry out the experimental study on the overburden subsidence prediction during coal mining. The results showed that the optical fiber monitoring data were reliable and could be used to predict overburden subsidence. The reliability of the calculation model for overlying rock subsidence based on space-time continuous optical fiber sensing data was verified in the application of mining subsidence evaluation. A systematic review of the shortcomings of current overburden deformation observation technology during coal mining was conducted, and a space-time continuous sensing system for overburden deformation and failure was proposed. This system integrated sensing, transmission, processing, early warning, decision-making, and emergency response. Based on the fusion of multi-parameter sensing, multi-method transmission, multi-algorithm processing, and multi-threshold early warning, the system realized the real-time acquisition of space-time continuous information for the overburden above coal seams. This system utilizes long-term historical monitoring data from the research area for data mining and modeling, realizing the prediction and evaluation of the evolution process of overburden deformation as well as the potential for mining subsidence. This work provides a theoretical reference for the prevention and control of mining disasters and the environmental carrying capacity evaluation of coal development.

The wireless sensors distributed in the environment can be used as the intelligent gas monitoring system. Adopting the multi-layer data fused to design working tactics and importing the artificial neural networks to analyze detecting results. The wireless sensors system communicates with the control center through the optical fiber cable. All the gas sensor nodes distributed in coal mine make up an intelligent, flexible structure wireless network system forming coal mine gas monitoring system based on wireless sensor network.

Abstract:Coal spontaneous combustion (CSC) in gob not only leads to wasted resources and casualties, but also produces a lot of waste gas that pollutes the underground environment. Mastering the degree of CSC helps ensure that timely and effective control measures are taken. The real-time and accurate monitoring of temperature, as the primary indicator of the extent of CSC, is difficult due to the harsh and hidden environment of gob, resulting in a reduced ability to anticipate and prevent CSC. In this work, a complete distributed optical fiber temperature sensing system (DTSS) set with strong anti-damage ability was developed. The optical cable is protected by internal parallel steel cables and external protective pipes, which greatly improve the system’s reliability and integrity when used in gob. During its application in the Wangyun Coal Mine, an abnormal temperature rise in gob was discovered in time, and the effect of inhibitor spraying was monitored and evaluated. The degree of CSC in the gob was accurately identified, which shows that the work of coal mining can be targeted. This work is expected to improve early warning capability to prevent the risk of CSC in gob, and has promising applications.

Abstract:In recent years, the coal industry has been expanding the scale and output of coal mining in China, yet the safety in production is faced with great challenge. Communication system in coal mines plays a significant role in production safety, and wireless narrowband data communication network technology is a new-type advantageous measure to construct wireless network security monitoring system for coal mining. Here, a coal mine monitoring signal transmission method based on bus technology and wireless data transmission technology suitable for coal mines is proposed. The corresponding monitoring system is designed, and the system is able to collect the gas concentration and mechanical operation status of the mines. Wireless sensor network nodes are used for the RF communication module. The communication performance of this system in coal and rock medium and the roadway along the goaf is simulated, and the quantitative relationship between the attenuation coefficient of different communication frequencies and the effective communication distance is obtained. Hence, the results show that the protocol has good performance in terms of route establishment, maintenance, and data transmission hop count for the positioning of coal mine employees.

Abstract:In order to provide technical support for the safe running and scientific management of the key mining equipment, this paper suggests a remote monitoring and control system for key equipment in coal-mine based on signal acquisition and data analysis, which mainly employs DSP, signal conditioning and CDMA1X wireless remote monitoring and control technologies. The system is composed of slave microcomputer used for signal acquisition and data analysis, host computer for centralized monitoring and control, and related communications software for signal processing. With a compact structure and reasonable layout, the hardware of the system has the advantages of precise signal acquisition, quick signal processing, and good real-time monitoring and control performance; with a module design, its software has a powerful signal processing capacity. Practice proves that the system is dramatically effective in guaranteeing the safe operation of key equipment in coal-mine.

Abstract:This paper introduces a search-and-rescue robot system used for remote sensing of the underground coal mine environment, which is composed of an operating control unit and two mobile robots with explosion-proof and waterproof function. This robot system is designed to observe and collect information of the coal mine environment through remote control. Thus, this system can be regarded as a multifunction sensor, which realizes remote sensing. When the robot system detects danger, it will send out signals to warn rescuers to keep away. The robot consists of two gas sensors, two cameras, a two-way audio, a 1 km-long fiber-optic cable for communication and a mechanical explosion-proof manipulator. Especially, the manipulator is a novel explosion-proof manipulator for cleaning obstacles, which has 3-degree-of-freedom, but is driven by two motors. Furthermore, the two robots can communicate in series for 2 km with the operating control unit. The development of the robot system may provide a reference for developing future search-and-rescue systems.

Abstract:After a coal mine disaster, the coal mine roadway often forms an unknown non‐structural environment. Once the normal communication of the roadway is destroyed, the rescue operation of the coal mine rescue robot could be hindered. To restore the emergency wireless communication system in the unstructured environment of the coal mine thus becomes an important prerequisite for the rescue work for the coal mine rescue robot. This paper studies the characteristics of the non‐structural environment and sets up its model. Based on the Maxwell equation and the mechanism of radio electromagnetic wave propagation, this paper researches the electromagnetic characteristics of wireless communication channel in the unstructured environment, and verifies them by numerical simulation. This paper also studies the strategy of repeater's laying for the robot, thereby providing a reliably theoretical foundation to quickly start up the emergency wireless of the coal mine rescue robot.

Abstract:Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) explores the use of the latest WSN technology in coal mine safety intelligent wireless monitoring, especially the three key technologies that need to solve the WSN wireless communication, transmission routing protocol and positioning algorithm for underground safety monitoring. The application of wireless sensor network in coal mine safety intelligent monitoring system is proposed, this paper discusses the principle and advantages of wireless sensor network and the design basis of wireless sensor network in intelligent monitoring system of coal mine safety. Based on the current situation and existing problems of the low level of intelligence of coal mine safety monitoring system, the design scheme and monitoring mechanism of coal mine safety intelligent monitoring system are proposed, and the feasibility of wireless sensor network in the application of coal mine safety intelligent monitoring system is discussed. Finally, the gateway proposed in this research was tested by laboratory simulation, and the results showed that the gateway designed in this research had good reliability and stability, and proposed a new solution for the design of coal mine safety monitoring system.

Abstract:Abstract The mining of open-pit coal resources will form a large number of mine slopes and the geological hazard of slope landslide restricts the sustainable production of open-pit coal mine, monitoring and early warning of landslide disasters can reduce the losses caused by landslide disasters but now the most widely used displacement monitoring technology can not achieve the function. Based on the mechanism of landslide mechanics, the new remote real time monitoring method is proposed and its equipment system is developed, the remote real-time monitoring and early warning work of Antaibao open-pit coal mine slope is carried out. The monitoring locations are determined by finite difference numerical simulation method, through the remote monitoring results and slope stability analysis indicate that the slope is at a stable state. It has been proved by engineering practice that the monitoring of slope mechanics can ensure security of the continuous mining of the mine.

Abstract:With the booming development of the rail transit industry and the increase in the construction and operation of mileage, the health status of infrastructure such as vehicles, tracks, and trains, as well as operational safety, have received widespread attention. Distributed optical fiber sensing technology has the characteristics of long monitoring distance, strong real-time performance, and highly economical, and has broad prospects in rail transit applications. This paper adopts Distributed Acoustic Sensing technology to obtain vibration information along the subway tunnel, analyzes the time-domain signal and frequency-domain energy characteristics of train vibration, as well as the passing time, direction, and location of the train, providing technical support for the safe operation of the subway.
