Abstract:Flexible grid optical networks have been attracting much attention for their high spectrum efficiency (SE) and flexibility compared to the rigid grid WDM networks. As well known, the networks suffer from the problem of spectrum fragmentation under dynamic traffic. In this paper, we propose a new concept called ‘fragment fusion degree (FFD)’ to assess the level of spectrum fragmentation in flexible grid optical networks, which is calculated based on the availability of the spectrum fragments among neighboring links. Two FFD based dynamic defragmentation algorithms are presented to fuse the spectrum fragments among neighboring links. Simulation results show that the proposed defragmentation algorithms reduce blocking probability significantly and achieve high profitability.

Abstract:Most sensor networks employ distributed and dynamic routing protocols. The flexibility that each node can choose the best forwarder from a diverse candidate set could offer excellent routing performance when the network is highly dynamic. However, it sacrifices routing predictability since it is possible that routing loops are frequently formed. Can we increase the network predictability by controlling the network? As a step towards solving this problem, we introduce FlexCut, a flexible approach for cutting off wireless links, which essentially limits the candidate forwarder set of each node. Unlike existing SDN solutions, FlexCut introduces flexible control over existing distributed and dynamic routing protocols. FlexCut can trade arbitrary amounts of routing diversity for better network performance by exposing to network operators a parameter which quantifies the aggressiveness. We propose novel algorithms, both centralized and distributed, to cut off user-defined number of links so that loops can be alleviated while routing flexibility can be preserved to the largest extent. We evaluate FlexCut extensively by both testbed experiments and simulations. Results show that FlexCut improves the performance by 40% ~ 90% compared with a baseline algorithm in terms of our optimization goal. Results also show that FlexCut can improve the network performance of a sensor network by 20% ~ 35%, 30% ~ 50%, 25% respectively, in terms of packet delivery ratio, transmission delay and radio duty cycle.

Abstract:Bandwidth defragmentation, i.e., the operation to reconfigure existing connections for making the spectrum usage less fragmented and less misaligned, has recently been recognized as one of the most important features for elastic optical networks (EONs). In this paper, we propose a novel comprehensive bandwidth defragmentation algorithm that considers the problems of 1) When to defragment? 2) What for defragment? and 3) How to defragment? jointly. The proposed algorithm accomplishes defragmentation through proactive network reconfiguration that only reroutes a portion of existing connections. In each defragmentation operation, we first choose the connections to reroute using a selection strategy, then determine how to reroute them with the defragmentation based routing and spectrum assignment (DF-RSA), and finally perform rerouting with best-effort traffic migration to minimize traffic disruptions. Simulation results indicate that in order to make the bandwidth blocking probability (BBP) comparable with that from the Greenfield scenario (100% rerouting all the time), the proposed algorithm only needs to reroute ~30% existing connections. The simulations also demonstrate that the traffic disruption percentages are less than 1% for defragmentations with 30% rerouting and can be further reduced to within 0.25% by adding a move-to-vacancy (MTV) approach in the traffic migration.

Abstract:In order to address the spectrum fragmentation problem in flexible grid optical networks,the spectrum fusion oriented routing and spectrum allocation algorithm and spectrum defragmentation algorithm are proposed.The notions of spectrum allocation window,spectrum allocation point and spectrum fusion window are introduced to optimize the network resource utilization.To retain the spectrum consecutiveness as much as possible when establishing a lightpath and reduce the spectrum fragments,the proposed RSA algorithm considers the spectrum utilization in candidate links and their adjacent links.The spectrum defragmentation algorithm is used to make enough room for the blocked request by rerouting already established lightpaths.Simulation results reveal that the algorithms significantly improve the blocking probability performance and resource utilization under dynamic traffic in flexible grid optical networks.

Abstract:With its agile spectrum management in the optical layer, the flexible-grid elastic optical network can become a promising physical infrastructure to efficiently support the highly dynamic traffic in future datacenter interconnections (DCIs). While the resulting elastic optical DCIs (EO-DCIs) need to serve requests that not only require bandwidth resources on fiber links but also require multidimensional IT resources in the DCs, multidimensional resource fragmentation can occur during dynamic network operations and deteriorate the network performance. To address this issue, this paper investigates the problem of joint defragmentation (DF) for the spectrum and IT resources in EO-DCIs. Specifically, we reoptimize the allocations of multidimensional resources jointly with complexity-controlled network reconfigurations. For the DFoperation, we first study the request selection process and propose a joint selection strategy that can perform the spectrum-and IT-oriented selections adaptively according to the network status. Then, we formulate a mixed integer linear programming model and design several heuristics to tackle the problem of network reconfiguration in the joint DF. The proposed algorithms are evaluated with extensive simulations. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed joint DF algorithms can significantly reduce the blocking probability in EO-DCIs by consolidating the spectrum and IT resource usages effectively.
On the Parallelization of Spectrum Defragmentation Reconfigurations in Elastic Optical Networks

Abstract:Flexible-grid elastic optical networks (EONs) have attracted intensive research interests for the agile spectrum management in the optical layer. Meanwhile, due to the relatively small spectrum allocation granularity, spectrum fragmentation has been commonly recognized as one of the key factors that can deteriorate the performance of EONs. To alleviate spectrum fragmentation, various defragmentation (DF) schemes have been considered to consolidate spectrum utilization in EONs through connection reconfigurations. However, most of the previous approaches operate in the sequential manner (Seq-DF), i.e., involving a sequence of reconfigurations to progressively migrate highly fragmented spectrum utilization to consolidated state. In this paper, we propose to perform the DF operations in a parallel manner (Par-DF), i.e., conducting all the DF-related connection reconfigurations simultaneously. We first provide a detailed analysis on the latency and disruption of Seq-DF and Par-DF in EONs, and highlight the benefits of Par-DF. Then, we study two types of Par-DF approaches in EONs, i.e., reactive Par-DF (re-Par-DF) and proactive Par-DF (pro-Par-DF). We perform hardness analysis on them, and prove that the problem of re-Par-DF is NP-hard in the strong sense while pro-Par-DF is an APX-hard problem. Next, we focus on pro-Par-DF and propose a Lagrangian-relaxation (LR) based heuristic to solve it time-efficiently. The proposed algorithm decomposes the original problem into several independent subproblems and ensures that each of them can be solved efficiently. The LR based approach informs us the proximity of current feasible solution to the optimal one constantly, and offers a near-optimal performance (relative dual gap 5%) within 500 iterations in most simulations. Extensive simulations also verify that the proposed pro-Par-DF approach outperforms Seq-DF in terms of the DF Latency, Disruption and Cost.

Abstract:Due to high spectral efficiency and flexibility of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) technology, OFDM-based optical grids/clouds are fast replacing WDM grids/clouds. As grids and clouds process data intensive tasks, protection of optical grids and clouds from an arbitrary fiber-cut is extremely important. Employing a protection scheme leads to idle resource reservation, and data are continuously lost till protection (backup) paths become operational after a link failure. So, a protection scheme should not only minimize reservation of idle resources; it must also make the network recover quickly from a failure. In a dynamic scenario, another important issue is spectral fragmentation which leads to increased blocking of requests. In this paper, we address the problem of providing protection to OFDM-based transparent optical grids/clouds ensuring fast failure recovery with minimizing of both resource consumption and spectral fragmentation to the extent possible. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first paper to address the said problem for transparent OFDM optical grids/clouds. Performance comparisons show that the proposed polynomial time algorithm, fragmentation-aware resource-efficient protection with fast recovery ( FRPFR ) decreases spectrum utilization, decreases bandwidth blocking ratio and increases backup spectrum sharing by 27.88%, 35.37% and 35.94%, respectively, over algorithm protection with fast recovery ( PFR ) and by 11.95%, 20.29% and 14.35%, respectively, over algorithm resource-efficient protection with fast recovery ( RPFR ).

Abstract:Spectrum defragmentation is important for an elastic optical network (EON) to enhance its spectrum utilization. However, the cause of spectrum fragmentation is the dynamicity of client-layer services. Thus, it is of significance to also consider the reconfiguration of the client-layer services when carrying out spectrum defragmentation. We expect that this effort can further improve the network spectrum utilization. Motivated by this, we propose cross-layer spectrum defragmentation for an IP and EON network so as to achieve better spectrum utilization by this joint effort. Simulation results show that the proposed cross-layer scheme is beneficial to greatly improve bandwidth blocking performance (BBP) compared to the other schemes that do not consider such joint effort.

Abstract:By employing sophisticated routing and spectrum assignment (RSA) algorithms together with a finer spectrum granularity (namely frequency slot) in resource allocation procedures, flex-grid optical networks can accommodate diverse kinds of services with high spectrum-allocation flexibility and resource-utilization efficiency. However, the continuity and the contiguity constraints in spectrum allocation procedures may always induce some isolated, small-sized, and unoccupied spectral blocks (known as spectrum fragments) in flex-grid optical networks. Although these spectrum fragments are left unoccupied, they can hardly be utilized by the subsequent service requests directly because of their spectral characteristics and the constraints in spectrum allocation. In this way, the existence of spectrum fragments may exhaust the available spectrum resources for a coming service request and thus worsens the networking performance. Therefore, many reactive defragmentation algorithms have been proposed to handle the fragmented spectrum resources via re-optimizing the routing paths and the spectrum resources for the existing services. But the routing-path and the spectrum-resource re-optimization in reactive defragmentation algorithms may possibly disrupt the traffic of the existing services and require extra components. By comparison, some proactive defragmentation algorithms (e.g. fragmentation-aware algorithms) were proposed to suppress spectrum fragments from their generation instead of handling the fragmented spectrum resources. Although these proactive defragmentation algorithms induced no traffic disruption and required no extra components, they always left the generated spectrum fragments unhandled, which greatly affected their efficiency in spectrum defragmentation. In this paper, by comprehensively considering the characteristics of both the reactive and the proactive defragmentation algorithms, we proposed a time-aware service-classified (TASC) spectrum defragmentation algorithm, which simultaneously employed proactive and reactive mechanisms in suppressing spectrum fragments with the awareness of services' types and their duration times. By dividing the spectrum resources into several flexible groups according to services' types and limiting both the spectrum allocation and the spectrum re-tuning for a certain service inside one specific spectrum group according to its type, the proposed TASC defragmentation algorithm cannot only suppress spectrum fragments from generation inside each spectrum group, but also handle the fragments generated between two adjacent groups. In this way, the proposed TASC algorithm gains higher efficiency in suppressing spectrum fragments than both the reactive and the proactive defragmentation algorithms. Additionally, as the generation of spectrum fragments is retrained between spectrum groups and the defragmentation procedure is limited inside each spectrum group, the induced traffic disruption for the existing services can be possibly reduced. Besides, the proposed TASC defragmentation algorithm always re-tunes the spectrum resources of the service with the maximum duration time first in spectrum defragmentation procedure, which can further reduce spectrum fragments because of the fact that the services with longer duration times always have higher possibility in inducing spectrum fragments than the services with shorter duration times. The simulation results show that the proposed TASC defragmentation algorithm can significantly reduce the number of the generated spectrum fragments while improving the service blocking performance.

Abstract:The explosion of Internet traffic calls for quality of service (QoS)-guaranteed packet transmission in wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) networks with high energy and bandwidth efficiency. Conventional routing and wavelength assignment (RWA) algorithms focus on circuit switching, which does not well meet this requirement due to the bursty nature of IP traffic. Based on a novel traffic matrix decomposition technique, we study the joint design of traffic scheduling and routing in a reconfigurable WDM optical network to improve energy and bandwidth efficiency. Specifically, every node in the network is equipped with a set of parallel tunable lasers, each with a reconfiguration overhead. A dynamic matrix is adopted to model the traffic among the nodes and is decomposed into a set of transmission configurations (i.e., traffic scheduling). The configurations are then fulfilled by tuning the parallel lasers and routing the scheduled traffic under the topology constraint, to achieve loss-free packet transmissions with bounded delay (i.e., QoS guarantee). We reveal that a tradeoff exists between the packet delay and the required number of tunable lasers. The latter is then minimized under a given packet delay to save energy. As far as we know, this is the first work to adopt traffic matrix decomposition in WDM networks to save energy. The proposed framework is validated by extensive simulation studies.
E2E Delay Optimization for Smart Grids Mission-critical Slices in Core Networks

Abstract:Based on software defined networking (SDN) and network function virtualization (NFV) technologies, network slicing can be customized to meet the end-to-end (E2E) quality of service (QoS) requirements of various power services in smart grids. E2E mission-critical services in smart grids should satisfy high reliability and low latency requirements, such as distribution automation, etc. In this paper, we slice the resource in core networks and flexibly coordinate different service function chains (SFCs) on the substrate physical network to enable different E2E mission-critical service delivery. Since the E2E average transmission delay is related to the congestion of each link in core networks, E2E transmission delay optimization problem is equivalent to minimize the maximum link congestion factor problem, which is Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP). Considering that the constraint of this problem is larg <sup xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">e</sup> and there are integer variables, the Generalized Benders Decomposition is adopted. The numerical results demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed algorithm.

Abstract:Elastic Optical Network (EON) is a new optical technology proposed to overcome limitations of the currently used Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) technology. The key advantages of EONs are efficient use of spectrum resources compared to classical fixed-grid in WDM networks and support of flexible modulation format conversion. Noteworthy trends observed in the last few years in communication networks are cloud computing and content-oriented services, provided by geographically dispersed data centers. Anycast transmission - defined as one-to-one-of-many-is attracting a lot of interest, since the network providers require cost-effective and scalable data delivery techniques in inter-data center networks. In this paper, we propose a new defragmentation algorithm for EONs. The key goal of the algorithm is to improve the network performance under dynamic traffic scenarios in terms of blocking probability and usage of regenerators. An important novelty of our approach is that we apply the defragmentation algorithm for both dynamic as well as for static traffic allocated in the network before the arrival of dynamic requests. Extensive numerical experiments run on real topologies with realistic traffic patterns following Cisco predictions show, that our defragmentation algorithm can significantly improve the network performance in terms of blocking probability and usage of regenerators.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider to apply a joint defrag-mentation (DF) of spectrum and computing resources in the inter-datacenter (inter-DC) networks built over elastic optical infrastructure based on the optical orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (O-OFDM) technology. We propose joint DF algorithms that consist of a request selection strategy to select active requests for reconfiguring and an anycast-based DF routing and spectrum assignment (DF-RSA) to reconfigure the selected requests. For the joint DF, two request selection strategies and three anycast-based DF-RSA schemes are designed, and their combinations are evaluated with simulations. The simulation results show that by considering the usages of spectrum and computing resources jointly, the proposed algorithms can improve the blocking performance of the inter-DC network significantly with controlled numbers of DF operations.

Abstract:A novel contention resolution scheme for optical burst switching (OBS) networks is proposed. Traffic payload is classified into two types at the edge nodes, and they are transferred through the core nodes using two different routing algorithms-least-hop first routing and shortest-path first routing, respectively, leading to balanced traffic loads among fiber links. By using this contention resolution scheme, active avoidance of burst contention is achieved. Performance evaluation and simulation results indicate that the new scheme outperforms the commonly used shortest-path first routing and is robust under both Poisson and self-similar traffic. Furthermore, the new scheme can provide quality-of-service (QOS) differentiation when used with wavelength conversion, and the implementation of this scheme is easy, which makes OBS technology more applicable in network engineering.
