Abstract:In order to realize the energy efficient on the traffic and illuminating lights in city, the Intelligent Traffic and Illuminating Control System is proposed in this paper. The working criteria of real-time monitoring and intelligently control are designed. The key technologies including Internet of Things with power line communication by LonWorks technology and the piezoelectric sensor on site detecting are utilized in the research. The traffic density is detected by piezoelectric sensor and is "told" to LonWorks network to adjust the traffic red lamp lighting time and the illuminating time. The working flow of the Intelligent Traffic and Illuminating Control System has been verified to ensure the sufficient capability by Cp 1.72 and Cpk 1.60 within Statistical Process Control. The Energy efficient is achieved by 35.71% electrical energy reduction and 66.67% fuel consumption reduction on the energy saving and the carbon oxide emission reduction, which demonstrates that the Intelligent Control System achieves effective and valuable real-time monitoring and intelligently control with superiority of the energy efficient compared to the previous reports.
An Algorithm for Reducing Loss Rate of High-Speed TCP

Abstract:Some high-speed protocols such as HSTCP have been proposed to improve the ability of bandwidth utilization in high-speed networks. However, the increased scalability of high-speed TCP leads to many dropped packets in a single loss event in drop tail environment. In addition, there exists burstiness on short time scales that may cause lots of packets loss. In this paper, we analyze the problem of packet loss, and then propose ACWAP (Adaptive Congestion Window Adjustment plus Pacing) algorithm to reduce the loss rate of high-speed TCP. Along with pacing algorithm for avoiding burstiness on short time scales, ACWAP uses delay information to estimate the network state and adaptively changes the increase parameter to 1 before congestion to reduce the number of dropped packets. Many simulation results show our proposed algorithm can reduce the number of dropped packets in a single loss event, alleviate synchronized loss phenomena and improve the RTT unfairness while keeping the advantages of high-speed TCP.

Abstract:Advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) is the core component of the smart grid. As the wireless connection between smart meters in AMI is featured with high packet loss and low transmission rate, AMI is considered as a representative of the low power and lossy networks (LLNs). In such communication environment, the routing protocol in AMI network is essential to ensure the reliability and real-time of data transmission. The IPv6 routing protocol for low-power and lossy networks (RPL), proposed by IETF ROLL working group, is considered to be the best routing solution for the AMI communication environment. However, the performance of RPL can be seriously degraded due to jamming attack. In this paper, we analyze the performance degradation problem of RPL protocol under jamming attack. We propose a backup node selection mechanism based on the standard RPL protocol. The proposed mechanism chooses a predefined number of backup nodes that maximize the probability of successful transmission. We evaluation the proposed mechanism through MATLAB simulations, results show the proposed mechanism improves the performance of RPL under jamming attack prominently.

Abstract:With rapid urbanization all over the world, the traffic congestion problem is becoming increasing severe. In particular, many metropolitan areas suffer from the problem of network gridlock in peak hours, which is mainly attributed to the limited street space as well as inefficient intersection signal control to cope the excessive demand. In light of this, in this paper we propose a model to describe the risk of gridlock on a network and develop an intersection control strategy to mitigate such risk. The intersection control is formulated within a decentralized agent-based framework, casting it as a dynamic portfolio management problem. Some properties of the proposed control strategy are discussed, along with numerical experiments demonstrating the performance on a grid network.

Abstract:The power flow of transmission lines may be overloaded when contingencies occur. To solve this problem effectively, this paper proposes a two-staged optimization model, which considers spinning reserve resources and network adjustment. Firstly, a DC power flow based mathematical model of network reconfiguration is introduced to obtain an approximate optimal solution. Then an AC power flow based mathematical model of network reconfiguration is introduced, and the obtained approximate optimal solution is used as an initial state. The proposed model is a mixed integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) model, because it considers the AC power flow constraints and introduces binary integer variables. The branch and bound method and the primal dual interior point method are used to solve the MINLP problem. Finally, the correctness and effectiveness of the proposed methods are verified by simulations on Fujian transmission grids.

Abstract:We revisit the loss reduction problem for network reconfiguration in power distribution systems in this paper. Besides the conventional line power loss (LPL), in our model, we introduce a new concept - the transient power loss (TPL), which is mainly induced by the communication asynchronization and response delay. TPL is often overlooked in previous works because it's hard to measure in the conventional power networks. However, we can tackle this challenge in smart grid especially with the help of smart meter. In this paper, we propose a new heuristic greedy algorithm to achieve the minimal LPL with bounded TPL and we assess its performance via simulation based on the IEEE-33 nodes system.

Abstract:Smart grid (SG) requires massive connections and ubiquitous interconnection, so it requires highly reliable communication services, and 5G communication is of great significance as an important means to ensure highly reliable transmission. This paper introduces the short block-length regime in 5G to meet the stringent requirements of smart grid highly reliable communication services. In addition, there are more and more types and quantities of grid terminals. Neighborhood Area Networks (NANs) need to transmit a large amount of delay-sensitive smart grid data at the same time, which also brings new challenges to network planning. This paper studies an uplink resource allocation scheme based on a heterogeneous cellular networks scenario. In order to maximize the system throughput, the objective problem is decomposed into two sub-problems, and an iterative algorithm based on first-order Taylor expansion linear approximation is proposed. Simulation results show that the algorithm can improve the data transmission throughput of grid devices, improve the efficiency of network resource use, and provide strong support for network planning.

Abstract:A smart grid is a next-generation intelligent power grid that can maximize energy efficiency by monitoring power information in real time and by controlling the flow of power by introducing IT communication technology to the existing power grid. In order to apply a wireless communication network to a smart grid, it is necessary to be able to efficiently process large amounts of power-related data while enabling a high level of reliability and quality of service (QoS) support. In addition, international standards-based design is essential considering compatibility and scalability. The IEEE 802.15.4 standard is considered to be the most powerful communication method for processing data through the smart grid AMI. To reduce the energy consumption, as the duty cycle of the superframe increases, the probability of the congestion increases. However, this binary exponential algorithm in IEEE 802.15.4 standard does not account for the application of traffic characteristics that essentially negatively affect the smart grid network performances in terms of packet delivery ratio and time delay. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a new transmission scheme to reduce performance degradation by excessive collisions in the content access period (CAP), when data transmission is performed in IEEE 802.15.4 applied to smart grids. In addition, we investigated the main research topics required when applying wireless networking technology to smart grids and suggested improvement measures. Simulation results showed that the proposed scheme increased the data delivery rate and reduced the latency, and it was confirmed that reliability was improved.

Abstract:Data transmission via wireless communication is crucial for smart grid. Wireless resource allocation is applied to provide different levels of Quality-of-Service (QoS) in wireless communication systems. In this paper, we propose an Adaptive Wireless Resource Allocation (AWRA) scheme with Quality of Service (QoS) guarantee, which includes channel allocation and time scheduling. According to QoS requirements, packets are assigned one of three different priorities, so that AWRA performs flexible and efficient channel allocation based on packets' priorities, thus satisfying a specific QoS requirement. Given transmission power and Packet Loss Rate (PLR), a mathematical optimization framework is formulated for maximizing the total capacity. Using the channels' quality indicated by Signal Noise Ratio (SNR) of a node, the proposed scheme allocates the channels to the predefined packet types. An adaptive-scheduling scheme based on the Residual Life Time (RLT) of packets is further introduced, where the value of RLT determined by the threshold of packet's tolerable waiting time is updated after each transmission. The proposed method aims to ensure the packets' QoS requirements by transmitting the packets with high priority on the high-quality channels. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm may considerably reduce the data drop rate and satisfies the packets' QoS requirements of smart grid.
A Novel Routing Algorithm for Power Line Communication over a Low-voltage Distribution Network in a Smart Grid

Abstract:A novel artificial cobweb routing algorithm (ACRA) for routing the tree-type physical topology of a low-voltage distribution network in a smart grid is proposed and analyzed in this paper. The establishment, maintenance and reconstruction of the route are presented. The artificial cobweb routing algorithm is shown to have broad general applicability for power line communication. To provide a theoretical foundation for further research, the communication delay of the network is calculated accurately. Simulation analysis of the communication delay and throughputs, which were based on Opnet14.5, demonstrate the accuracy of the theoretical calculation. For the performance evaluation of ACRA, a test-bed that includes PLC nodes with the ACRA is set up in a noisy environment. Experimental results show the feasibility of the ACRA algorithm. These indicate that ACRA is effective for guaranteeing Quality of Service (QoS) and reliability in power line communication.
A Path Selection Method for Wide-area Protection Communication System in Smart Grids

Abstract:With the rapid development of smart grids, wide-area protection communication system has high requirements for real-time and reliability. However, the shortest path-based method is generally adopted in the wide-area protection communication system of smart grids, so as to meet the communication requirements of power services. When a failure of nodes or links happens in smart grids, it will cause serious economic losses to power system. In order to solve this problem, according to the requirements of real-time and reliability of wide-area protection communication, an optimal path selection model with reliability and constraints is proposed to minimize the weighted link delay and utilization. An improved genetic algorithm is adopted to solve the mathematical model. The simulation results shows that the proposed method not only considers the use of network resources, but also realizes network load balancing with satisfying real-time and reliability of wide-are protection system. The optimal working and alternative paths are selected, and the safe and stable operation of power system is ensured.

Abstract:3GPP Long Term Evolution (LTE) is considered to be a promising solution for smart grid because it provides both low latency and large band-width. However, LTE was not originally intended for smart grid applications, where data generated by the grid have specific delay requirements that are different from traditional data or voice communications. In this paper, the specific QoS requirement - the maximum allowed delay - imposed by smart grid on the LTE uplink communication infrastructure is first considered, we propose an Adaptive Resource Allocation (ARA) Scheme which classifies service data into three types by considering the QoS requirement of each packet and allocate resource blocks based on Signal Noise Ratio(SNR). In addition, the Residual Life Time (RLT) of each packet is further introduced, where the value of RLT determined by the tolerable waiting time of packet is updated after each transmission. It is shown by the simulation results that the proposed algorithm can flexibly and efficiently allocate the resource blocks, considerably reduce the packet loss rate and have better throughout.

Abstract:Owing to the openness and diversification of heterogeneous communication network, communication security becomes a pressing problem. In this paper, we consider a heterogeneous communication network in which spectrum resources are shared by electric power communication network and licensed network. First, we establish the utility companies' cost model based on Taguchi loss function. Next, we utilize cooperative relay strategy to enhance the transmission quality and achieve high-speed information transmission in smart grids. Under the premise of ensuring high-quality transmission of electric power communication services, we propose a secure transmission strategy for information resource sharing and interference price trading that utilizes smart grid infrastructure and relay to interfere with eavesdroppers to improve the security rate of licensed users (LUs), which achieves mutual benefits. Furthermore, the bernstein approximation method and the successive convex approximation are adopted to obtain the open-form expression of the constraint and transform the non-convex problem into the convex problem, respectively. A distributed robust power control algorithm is then proposed to obtain the optimal solutions. Finally, numerical results verify that the proposed secure scheme and algorithm can improve the secrecy rate at the LU, and the total electricity cost is reduced, the profit of relay and the social welfare both are improved.

Abstract:Distribution network optimum reconfiguration is an available measure for reducing line loss.Algorithms and problems of distribution network optimum reconfiguration are discussed in the paper.For improving speed of distribution network optimum reconfiguration,quickly computing power loss using hybrid power flow calculation method is put forward.This paper puts forward topology method based on degree to judge the unfeasible solution and offers topology analysis for forward and backward substitution method.If unfeasible solution is produced during gene operation process,operation should be reoperated to minimize search space and make none unfeasible solution generate in algorithm.Using bad body as colony strategy to avoid cheating phenomenon.Example proves that the algorithm applying in distribution network reconfiguration is valid.

Abstract:Power Line Communications (PLC) is regarded as the promising home networking technology for smart grid application since the PLC technology enables data transmission via the existing power line. The cooperation between PLC and Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) will be an effective hybrid solution for Home Area Networks (HANs). In this paper, we consider that Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) packets are transmitting in heterogenous communications network based on PLC and WLAN. The existing TCP congestion control has low effectiveness due to the error-prone power line channel. Therefore, we propose an adaptive rate control to improve TCP performance in the hybrid PLC/WLAN HANs. We exploit the communications mechanism of WLAN to improve the PLC link utilization. The methodology of Heuristic Dynamic Programming (HDP) is employed to obtain the optimal rate policy. The bottleneck link capacity is estimated by neural network training. The sending rate is adapted according to the long-term quality of service (QoS) of applications. Simulation results illustrate that the proposed rate control effectively filters out the negative impact from the instantaneous impulse noise in PLC channel and outperforms the existing TCP.
An Improved Optimal Flow Pattern Algorithm for Distribution Network Reconfiguration

Abstract:An improved optimal flow pattern algorithm for the network reconfiguration to minimize line losses is presented. The expression of loss changing after opening a switch in the closed-loop network is derived, and the heuristic rule based on the minimization of loss incremental due to switch opening is used to form the new radial network. The features of the proposed algorithm are those the appearance of isolated nodes and the reordering of nodes can be avoided during the reconfiguration process, and the procedure can be applied to system with no switch on some branches or with more than one supply source.

Abstract:Smart grid is an emerging technology which is able to control the power load via price signaling. The communication between the power supplier and power customers is a key issue in smart grid. Performance degradation like delay or outage may cause significant impact on the stability of the pricing based control and thus the reward of smart grid. Therefore, a QoS mechanism is proposed for the communication system in smart grid, which incorporates the derivation of QoS requirement and applies QoS routing in the communication network. For deriving the QoS requirement, the dynamics of power load and the load-price mapping are studied. The corresponding impacts of different QoS metrics like delay are analyzed. Then, the QoS is derived via an optimization problem that maximizes the total revenue. Based on the derived QoS requirement, a simple greedy QoS routing algorithm is proposed for the requirement of high speed routing in smart grid. It is also proven that the proposed greedy algorithm is a K-approximation. Numerical simulation shows that the proposed mechanism and algorithm can effectively derive and secure the communication QoS in smart grid.

Abstract:The packet loss during transmission of load control commands can lead to regulation errors in the smart grid and increase the cost of utility agencies due to the purchase of additional automatic generation control (AGC) services. In this paper, a two-layer cooperative communication network between the utility company and relays is presented. The utility company rents the relay to assist with the downlink transmission to improve the reliability of communication and reduce the data transmission cost due to packet loss. Furthermore, the uncertainty of channel gain is considered, and a two-tier game model is established. A distributed robust power control algorithm based on the continuous convex approximation method is proposed to obtain the optimal relay power allocation and price. Through the simulation analysis of the proposed scheme and the two comparison schemes, the cost of the utility company was reduced by 6% and 21%, and the standard deviation of income value between the relays was reduced by 40% and 48%, respectively.
