Abstract:We propose an ultracompact channel drop filter (CDF) based on photonic crystal nanobeam cavities. The conditions for implementing such an ideal CDF are derived from the temporal coupled-mode equations governing the operation of the CDF. By considering the intercoupling of the two involved nanobeam cavities, some ambiguities of the previous equivalent circuit model analysis are cleared up. Practical configurations on silicon-on-insulator (SOI) for the proposed CDF are suggested with a typical length less than 15 μm. Finite difference time domain (FDTD) method calculations show that the proposed filter can achieve drop efficiency higher than 99% without any reflection. Compared to the λ/4-shifted Bragg grating resonators based CDF, the proposed CDF is more compact, high-efficient and reflection-free. It is also easy to implement a low-power tunable filter due to the ultrahigh quality factor Q and ultrasmall modal volume V of the involved photonic crystal nanobeam cavities.
Selectable-FSR 10-Ghz Granularity WDM Superchannel Filter in a Reconfigurable Photonic Integrated Circuit

Abstract:We present a 10-GHz granularity reconfigurable WDM superchannel filter in a photonic integrated circuit. The filter uses a ring-resonator-assisted tapped-delay-line topology. An example configuration with two ring resonators and four tapped delay lines provides a spectral filter with a flat-top passband, a roll-off factor of 8%, a tunable central wavelength, and a selectable free spectral range, i.e., 2x or 4x the 3-dB passband bandwidth. The device was fabricated in a silicon nitride (Si3N4/SiO2) waveguide with a chip area of 0.36 cm(2) and has a fiber-to-fiber insertion loss of 5 dB. We experimentally demonstrate the filter for selecting a subchannel from a WDM superchannel comprising 10-GHz sub-channels with 10% and zero guard bands. Owing to the infinite impulse responses of ring resonators, this filter requires a significantly smaller area and fewer tuning elements compared with designs based on only tapped-delay-line finite-impulse-response filters. This paper contributes to the creation of chip-scale all-optical WDM superchannel transceivers and reconfigurable optical add/drop multiplexers (ROADMs).

Abstract:Ultracompact channel add-drop filter utilizing a single nanobeam photonic crystal cavity is analyzed, designed, and demonstrated. Anti-symmetric multimode periodic waveguide structure is employed to implement mode conversion and thus produce degenerate resonant states in the involved nanobeam cavity. Theoretical analysis results indicate that the inter-modal conversion coefficient and the waveguide-cavity coupling coefficient have significant effects on the lineshape of the filter. By carefully engineering the structure of the multimode nanobeam cavity and its side-coupled configuration, we successfully achieve an ultracompact add-drop filter with device area around 20 μm2. The experimental results on silicon-on-insulator (SOI) platform show that the insertion losses of drop port, the crosstalk of add port of the fabricated filter are -1.1 dB and -14.7 dB, respectively. The modal volume of the involved nanobeam cavity are small as 1.2(λ/n) 3 , indicating huge potentials in developing low-power consumption tunable devices for future very large scale integration (VLSI) photonic applications.

Abstract:A narrow-band add-drop filter based on an anti-symmetric cladding-modulated multimode Bragg grating (CMMBG) is demonstrated on the silicon-on-insulator (SOI) platform. The CMMBG is implemented by using periodic placements of silicon cubes along a multimode waveguide. The coupling strength is varied by changing the distance between the cubes and the multimode waveguide. An unlimited free-spectral range (FSR) and weak coupling strengths for TE0-TE1 modes conversion are achieved. Sidewall-misalignment-modulation (SMM) apodization is applied to achieve a high sidelobe suppression ratio (SLSR). The experimental results show that the designed filtering device has a 3-dB bandwidth of 0.8 nm, an insertion loss of 0.65 dB and a SLSR of 20.3 dB. The devices with different grating duty cycles and multimode waveguide widths were also fabricated and analyzed. Our devices are promising for on-chip applications that require narrow bandwidths such as WDM channel filters.
Engineering Waveguide-Cavity Resonant Side Coupling in A Dynamically Tunable Ultracompact Photonic Crystal Filter

Abstract:We employ a plane-wave-based transfer-matrix method in combination with a Bloch-mode scattering model to scrutinize the optical performance of an ultracompact photonic crystal (PC) all-pass optical filter made from a single-mode PC waveguide side coupled with latitudinal optical microcavities. A series of geometrical configurations of resonant microcavities side coupled with the PC waveguide, such as single one-side and two-side, periodically cascaded one-side and two-side arrangement of microcavities, and different quantities of the latitudinal and longitudinal cavity scales, cavity-cavity distance, and cavity-waveguide distance have been systematically investigated. The calculated reflection spectra exhibit a continually splitting feature of resonant frequency when the cavity size is increased. The resonant frequency shifts toward higher frequencies when we reduce the indirect coupling coefficient by increasing the waveguide-cavity distance or by introducing a symmetric two-side structure of microcavities. Optical monomode operation of the reflection pulse can be achieved for appropriate distance between two horizontal microcavities. The resonant peaks gradually evolve into a distinct rectangular shape when we introduce periodically cascaded side-coupled microcavities along the waveguide direction, implying the creation of a forbidden minigap within the guided mode continuum. The optical filter in the two-side configurations has a better filtering performance than in the one-side constructions. The cascaded side-coupled cavity-waveguide structure can act as a high-performance optical delay line.

Abstract:A cross-coupled substrate-integrated evanescent-mode waveguide filter is proposed with a quasi-elliptic frequency response. It is realized with a coplanar waveguide as a nonresonating node to provide an equivalent negative coupling coefficient. The filter prototype is developed with folded and ridge substrate-integrated waveguides (SIWs) in low-temperature co-fired ceramic. Since evanescent-mode and cross-coupling techniques are used in the design of filters, about 90% area reduction and more than 60% volume reduction are achieved, in comparison with conventional planar cavity-coupled SIW filters. Their unloaded Q factor is also improved. In particular, the spurious suppression characteristic of the direct-coupled evanescent-mode waveguide filter is kept by the cross-coupled filter with the nonresonating node structure. All these merits are demonstrated numerically, as well as experimentally, with good agreement obtained between the measured and simulated S-parameters.

Abstract:A lossy filter with flat passband and asymmetric response is proposed by using complex couplings. The complex coupling coefficients with positive and negative imaginary parts are realized with transmission lines loaded with series and shunt resistors, respectively. Design formulas are derived for the critical parameters. A filter prototype is developed at 4.97 GHz and substrate integrated waveguide resonators with unloaded Q-factor of 450 are used. One transmission zero is located in its upper stopband. The 0.2-dB bandwidth of 279 MHz is achieved and the equivalent Q-factor is about 1900. Good agreement is obtained among the synthesized, simulated, and measured results.

Abstract:A set of miniaturized dual-band bandpass filters is presented with a quadruple-folded substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) implemented into each design. They were fabricated using standard low temperature co-fired ceramic (LTCC) technology. The bandwidths of both passbands of the filters are adjustable independently by changing the geometrical parameters of the coupling structure. Two filter samples are demonstrated with central frequencies located at 2.4/5.2 and 2.4/5.7 GHz, respectively, and their measured S-parameters agree well with the simulated ones.

Abstract:This paper presents novel bandpass filters by using a triple-mode dielectric resonator (DR) implemented in a substrate integrated waveguide (SIW). The resonant frequency and unloaded Q-factor of the DR were first calculated and simulated by Ansoft HFSS. The dimensions of the DR were then determined. A single triple-mode SIW loaded with a DR filter with tuning elements was designed, simulated, and measured. Spurious suppression with source and load couplings, as well as fabrication tolerance, was analyzed. A six-mode filter that uses two DRs was also proposed and measured. These filters exhibit close agreements between the simulation and measurement results and have the advantages of low insertion loss, compact configuration, and easy integration with other planar circuits. The proposed concept is very attractive for designing low cost, low insertion loss, and miniaturized filters for wireless communication systems.

Abstract:The design, fabrication, and characterization of a compact photonic crystal nanobeam drop filter based on the tunneling effect of the degenerate modes are presented. The degeneracy was achieved by tuning the coupling distance between the nanobeam and input/output waveguides. The tunneling effect of degenerate resonances with different symmetries has been verified experimentally. Abstract:A narrow-hand silicon photonic add-drop filter is demonstrated by using phase-modulated grating-assisted contra-directional couplers (contra-DCs) on the silicon-on-insulator platform. The apodization coupling is achieved by modulating the phase of one grating in a contra-DC, while keeping the other grating uniform. As the local effective index of the gratings remains almost unchanged, the designed apodized contra-DC has a large designing flexibility and a high sidelobe suppression ratio (SLSR). To obtain a narrow bandwidth, weak coupling is designed. Single-stage and dual-stage filtering are both studied. The experimental results show that single-stage filtering device has a 3-dB bandwidth of 0.9 nm and an SLSR of 18 dB. Dual-stage filtering device has a 3-dB bandwidth of 0.5 nm and an SLSR of 23 dB. Our devices are promising for on-chip applications that require narrow bandwidths such as wavelength-division-multiplexed channel filters.
Efficient Coupling of Evanescent Waves in Rectangular Waveguides Based on Ultrathin Planar Capacitive Metasurfaces

Abstract:This work proposes an approach to enable efficient coupling of evanescent waves below the cutoff frequency of a standard rectangular waveguide(RWG) system based on ultrathin planar capacitive metasurfaces(CMSs). It is demonstrated that the CMS at the RWG’s cross-section can couple the evanescent wave from one port to the other, and thus enable an efficient frequency-selective transmission below the cutoff frequency. Theoretical formulas, together with the equivalent circuit, are presented to quantitatively illustrate the operational mechanism of the proposed approach. The performance characteristics, including out-of-band suppression, Q-factor, transmission loss, and coupling bandwidth, are studied in a comprehensive manner. Three CMS samples with different surface impedance values are designed, fabricated, and measured.The measurement results show good agreement with the numerical values, validating their highly efficient evanescent wave coupling performance characteristic at selected frequencies below the cutoff frequency, with approximately 100% transmission efficiency. Benefiting from the admirable low-frequency coupling performance,this approach has potential applications in many miniaturized and high-performance transmission components, such as compact evanescent wave resonators, filters, and antennas.

Abstract:Photonic crystal channel drop filters (CDFs) play a vital role in optical communication owing to their ability to drop the desired channel. However, it remains challenging to achieve high-efficiency CDFs. Here, we demonstrate a highly efficient three-channel CDF with both high transmission and high quality (Q) factor based on a novel ring resonator that is in the middle of two waveguides. A dielectric column with a large radius replaces the homogeneously distributed dielectric columns inside the ring cavity to modulate the coupling ratio with a straight waveguide, thereby enhancing the transmission and Q factor. The transmission and Q factor of the single-cavity filter are 99.7% and 12,798.4, respectively. The mean value of the three-channel filter based on the basic unit can reach up to 94.6% and 10,617, respectively, and a crosstalk between −30.16 and −50.61 dB is obtained. The proposed CDFs provide efficient filter capability, which reveals great potential in integrated optoelectronics and optical communication.

Optical Add-Drop Multiplexer with Hexagonal-Hole Lattice PC Slab Waveguides

Abstract:We report on a channel drop filter with a mode gap in the propagating mode of a photonic crystal slab that was fabricated on silicon on an insulator wafer. The results, simulated with the 3-dimensional finite-difference time-domain and plane-wave methods, demonstrated that an index-guiding mode for the line defect waveguide of a photonic crystal slab has a band gap at wave vector k = 0.5 for a mainly TM-like light-wave. The mode gap works as a distributed Bragg grating reflector that propagates the light-wave through the line defect waveguide, and can be used as an optical filter. The filter bandwidth was varied from 1-8 nm with an r/a (r: hole radius, a: lattice constant) variation around the wavelength range of 1550-1600 nm. We fabricated a Bragg reflector with a photonic crystal line-defect waveguide and Si-channel waveguides and by measuring the transmittance spectrum found that the Bragg reflector caused abrupt dips in transmittance. These experimental results are consistent with the results of the theoretical analysis described above. Utilizing the Bragg reflector, we fabricated channel dropping filters with photonic crystal slabs connected between channel waveguides and demonstrated their transmittance characteristics. They were highly drop efficient, with a flattop drop-out spectrum at a wavelength of 1.56 μm and a drop bandwidth of 5.8 nm. Results showed that an optical adddrop multiplexer with a 2-D photonic crystal will be available for application in WDM devices for photonic networks and for LSIs in the near future.

Abstract:We propose an add-drop filter with an unlimited free spectral range (FSR). The device is based on grating-assisted contradirectional couplers with silicon-on-insulator ridge waveguides. The intrawaveguide coupling is significantly diminished by distancing the periodically structured corrugated waveguide away from the straight input waveguide. Based on this asymmetric structure, calculated results show that the peak reflectivity of the intrawaveguide coupling is lower than 0.1 dB, while that of the contradirectional coupling is higher than 20 dB. An experimental result of 1.8 dB for the intrawaveguide coupling is obtained. A narrow drop-port bandwidth of 0.8 nm is also achieved experimentally. (C) 2012 Optical Society of America

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate experimentally an ultracompact resonant system exhibiting sharp asymmetric Fano-resonance, in which a tiny photonic crystal nanobeam cavity is laterally coupled to a waveguide Fabry-Perot resonator. Under the presence of cavity intrinsic loss, we find that the system produces sharper and higher extinction ratio Fano resonance spectra only if appropriate phase is selected. The whole device (∼6 μm2) is implemented on silicon on insulator platform, and experimentally we observe steep-slope Fano resonance with extinction ratio of 7.3 dB, slope above 5 dB/nm, and average insertion loss less than 1.8 dB.

Abstract:Photonic crystal nanobeam microcavities based on slot and hollow-core waveguides were proposed and analyzed. Three-dimensional finite-difference time-domain simulations show that both an ultrasmall modal volume (V) and a high quality (Q) factor can be obtained simultaneously in hollow-core-nanobeam mirocavities (HCNMs) due to the strong confinement of fields in the two lateral directions. For a 6.5-mu m-long HCNM, the Q factor and V are on the order of 10(5) and 10(-2) (lambda/2n)(3), respectively. With compactness, lower fabrication requirements as well as ultrahigh Q/V, the proposed microcavities would be very promising in a variety of applications. (c) 2011 Optical Society of America
