Abstract:The design and analysis of a high-power wideband sheetbeam coupled-cavity traveling-wave tube operating at V-band is presented.The interaction circuit employs three-slot doubly periodic staggered-ladder coupled-cavity slow-wave structure, and a 5 : 1 aspectratio sheet electron beam is used to interact with the circuit.Combined with design of the well-matched input and output couplers, a 3-D particle-in-cell model of the sheet-beam coupled-cavity traveling-wave tube is constructed.The electromagnetic characteristics and the beamwave interaction of the tube are investigated.From our calculations, this tube can produce saturated output power over 630 Watts ranging from 58 GHz to 64 GHz when the cathode voltage and beam current are set to 13.2 kV and 300 mA, respectively.The corresponding saturated gain and electron efficiency can reach over 32.5 dB and 15.9%.Compared with the circular beam devices, the designed sheetbeam TWT has absolute advantage in power capability, and also it is more competitive in bandwidth and electron efficiency.

Abstract:A theoretical model is proposed for linear analysis of the beam–wave interaction in a sine waveguide (SWG) with slow-wave structure. The field expressions and “hot” dispersion equation are obtained by means of field matching. The ohmic loss and attenuation constant due to imperfect conductors are also derived using the theoretical model. Moreover, the effects of voltage, current, beam thickness, period, and oscillation amplitude on the linear gain and bandwidth are calculated. The results indicate a peak gain and 3-dB bandwidth of 6.82 dB/cm and 19.5%, respectively, for a 0.22-THz SWG traveling-wave tube upon selecting reasonable structural parameters and electron-beam dimensions. Furthermore, by considering the ohmic losses for the finite conductivities of 5.8 × 107 S/m and 2.2 × 107 S/m, the theoretical results are compared with those of particle-in-cell simulations performed using Computer Simulation Technology Particle Studio.

Abstract:In this paper, we have developed an accurate and fast method of predicting the dispersion characteristics, interaction impedance, and attenuation of tunneladder slow-wave structure for millimeter-wave traveling-wave tubes, in which an equivalent circuit theory and the simulations of electromagnetic simulation software are incorporated. The discrepancy between the theoretical data by this approach and the experimental data is within 0.5% on dispersion characteristics. Furthermore, the cold results are used in the no-linear beam-wave interaction simulation code LATTE to calculate the tube gain. The test results show good agreement with the computer simulated (LATTE) linear and saturated gains.

Abstract:The ridge loaded ring-plane traveling wave tube can provide high output power in a relatively broader bandwidth. The dispersion relation for the interaction between the electron beam and the symmetrical mode propagating in this slow wave circuit is obtained, by means of the Variational method The method to calculate the arbitrary order Bessel function with complex argument is discussed. The three dimensional trajectory graph of the Bessel function with complex argument is plotted. The instantaneous operating bandwidth can be estimated in terms of the relation between of the gain and frequency.

Abstract:In this article, an improved model for the beam-wave interaction of sheet beam in traveling wave tubes (TWTs) considering ohmic losses and reflections is presented. The ohmic losses are obtained by field analysis and equivalent method. The space charge magnetic field is derived from the active Helmholtz's equation. An algorithm to obtain the S-matrix by the equivalent circuit method is presented. The relativistic Boris method is applied to accelerate macroparticles. The exchanged power is computed by the work the electromagnetic field applied to the macroparticles. The theoretical model is applied for validation to a G-band staggered double vane TWT and validated in comparison with CST Particle Studio and simulations without losses and reflections. The convergence of this algorithm is also discussed. The simulation time of the model is substantial faster than 3-D particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations.

Abstract:In this study, a complete and viable plan about a W-band sheet beam travelling wave tube based on a staggered double vane slow wave structure is drawn up. The dispersion characteristics, transposition characteristics of high-frequency system, sheet electron beam gun, vacuum window, periodically cusped magnetic focusing system and beam-wave interaction are analysed by CST Microwave Studio, CST Particle Studio and HFSS. An attenuator is used in this device to suppress oscillation. A phase velocity taper is used to increase output power. The operation voltage is 20.6 kV and the current is 80 mA. With a 10 W input power, the output power is 1100 W versus the gain is 20.41 dB at 95 GHz. The peak amplitude approaches 1200 W versus the gain approaches 20.79 dB at 99 GHz.

Abstract:The formula of electron gun output current establishes the relationship between cathode voltage, grid voltage, anode voltage, filament voltage and electron gun output current. Firstly, the relationship between cathode voltage, grid voltage, anode voltage, and the output current of electron gun is established based on the conductivity coefficient formula. Then, the relationship between filament voltage and electron gun output current is established through filament temperature. Finally, the output current formula of electron gun is obtained.

Abstract:An 850 GHz staggered double-vane traveling wave tube (TWT) is designed in this paper. The high-frequency characteristics and transmission characteristics of the circuit are calculated and the results indicate that the reflection coefficient is below -20 dB in the frequency range from 770 GHz to 860 GHz, which including the attenuator and ridge-loaded waveguide input/output coupler. The particle-in-cell simulation is also calculated and the results show that the tube can get over 50mW output power among a wide bandwidth with an operating voltage of 28.1 kV, input power of 2mW and beam current of 20 mA.

Abstract:A novel double-ridge loaded folded waveguide (FWG) traveling-wave tube (TWT) amplifier for sheet electron beam working at 140 GHz is proposed in this paper. The dispersion relation and interaction impedance characteristics have been analyzed based on the equivalent circuit method. The transmission properties and nonlinear interaction are investigated. The simulation results reveal that the double-ridge loaded FWG-TWT with sheet electron beam can make full use of relatively large electronic fields, and the average output power can be over 110W at 140 GHz when the electron beam voltage and the current of the sheet beam are set to 12.7 kV and 150 mA, respectively. Meanwhile, the maximum gain and interaction efficiency can reach 34 dB and 12%, respectively. Compared with the traditional FWG-TWT, the novel FWG-TWT has the advantages of much higher efficiency and bigger output power.

Abstract:Staggered double vane slow wave structure (SWS) and sheet electron beam are employed to investigate a 140 GHz high power traveling wave tube. Numerical calculation of eigenmode shows that the SWS has a good characteristic of dispersion and interaction impedance. The transition structure, input/output coupler and concentrated attenuator are especially proposed for the circuit to ensure that the tube will work well. Particle-in-cell simulation results demonstrate that the traveling wave tube can provide over 300 W of peak power in a frequency range of 132-152 GHz with a maximum of 546 W and a corresponding gain of 37.37 dB at 138 GHz assuming a beam power to be 5.115 kW and input power to be 0.1 W. The output power of the tube can exceed 440 W in a frequency range of 128-152 GHz with a corresponding interaction efficiency of over 8.6% when the input powers range from 0.027 W to 0.46 W. Such a traveling wave tube has a great significance and a potential application in high power short millimeter wave field.

Abstract:A novel sine waveguide slow-wave structure was proposed for sheet electron beam traveling-wave tube. Its dispersion and radio frequency transmission characteristics were calculated in W-band. The electromagnetic wave amplification capability based on interaction between sheet electron beam and slow wave was gained through particle-in-cell method. The investigation results show that, the sheet electron beam sine waveguide traveling-wave tube can produce more than 100 W from 85GHz to 102GHz with a voltage of 20.3kV and a beam current of 150mA.

Abstract:This paper presents a method based on the least squares theory to calculate the parameters of current waveforms in high power laboratory. It uses different primary function for partly or fully fitting according to different parameters. The calculating results of STL-TDG standard waveforms show that it has relatively high precision.

Abstract:In order to alleviate the problem of achieving large powers beyond 10 kW at frequencies as high as 220 GHz, a two-stage, two-sheet-beam relativistic TWT (SBRTWT) was proposed. For one-stage SBRTWT, there exists instability phenomenon as the effect of electron noise will become large enough compared with the small input power. To avoid the effect, the gain of the first-stage tube was decreased, and its output power was employed to drive the second-stage tube. A large-width branch-guide energy coupler was proposed, analyzed and designed, which can solve the difficult problem to couple the amplified microwave from a wide waveguide to another wide waveguide. A two-beam SBRTWT of 70 kW output with a gain of 28.5 dB was predicted. The findings establish that the two-stage configuration provides larger output powers than the single-stage configuration of SBRTWT and call for further research in two-stage SBRTWT.

Abstract:A 220 GHz sheet-beam Traveling-Wave tube (TWT) with output power 50 W was proposed. For the project, a sheet-beam electron gun with a circular cathode and a periodic cusped magnet-tunable quadrupolar magnet (PCM-TQM) focusing system are designed using the three-dimensional particle simulation software Opera 18R2. The experimental results show that the total current of the sheet-beam electron gun is consistent with the simulated beam current of ~135 mA. In addition, the transmission properties of the T-shape staggered double-grating slow wave structure (SWS) with input and output couplers were measured. The measured data show that there is a good passband within 15 GHz frequency range for the proposed TWT. In the future, the device performance will be reported.

Abstract:In this paper, we analyze the design of the folded waveguide slow-wave circuit for traveling-wave tube (TWT) amplifiers. On the basis of physical analyses, an improved physical-based design method that is especially suitable for high-power devices is developed. The proposed method overcomes the difficulties resulting from increased operating voltages and requirements for higher interaction impedance in high-power designs. It enables balancing of dispersion and interaction impedance, which is a flexible approach in addressing operational problems. Furthermore, the essential relationship between the proposed and the existing methods are revealed. A Ka-band folded waveguide TWT amplifier is designed and examined, thereby confirming that the new design method is effective and reliable.

Abstract:In future electronic devices, the trade-off between power capacity and thermal management will be a severe challenge. In this letter, a sheet beam slow-wave structure (SB-SWS) has been proposed to realize high-power output while taking into account cooling design inside the traveling-wave tubes (TWT). The design of the modified structure ensures a sufficient axial electric field component to realize efficient interaction, meanwhile expands the width of the metal vanes by 327% to design micro-channel cooling. The power load capacity for electronic interception increased by 25%. Utilizing all-period optimization technology, the maximum output power can reach 4 kW, corresponding 18.8% electronic extraction efficiency. Also presented further is a proof-of-concept design model of Ka-band for practical test. The consistency between experiment and theory shows that this SWS is not only suitable for microwave frequency band, but more suitable for future miniaturized devices in sub-millimeter wave and terahertz bands.

Abstract:Background: A W-band Sheet Electron Beam (SEB) Traveling-Wave Tube (TWT) based on Three-Slot Staggered-Ladder (TSTL) Coupled-Cavity Slow-Wave Structure (CC-SWS) is proposed in this paper. Methods: The high-frequency characteristics of TSTL CC-SWS are analyzed in detail. Well-matched input/output couplers that solve the problem of energy coupling between the SWS and the external circuit are designed. In addition, a Small Tunable Periodic Cusped Magnet (STPCM) system is used to focus the SEB, which is predicted to exhibit 100% beam transmission efficiency. Finally, the beam-wave interaction was studied with CST particle studio. Results: The results show that the SEB TWT can produce output power over 1.27kW within the bandwidth ranging from 90GHz to 99.5GHz, and the maximum output power is 2.8kW at 96.5GHz, corresponding to the maximum electronic efficiency of 11%.

Abstract:In this paper, cross-field is tried to focus a sheet beam traveling wave tube (TWT) for obtaining both high gain and high net efficiency due to electron selection. The device is analyzed by a non-linear code. And the results show that, at the input power of 0.8W and in varied operation bands from 8GHz to 250GHz, compared with traditional cross-field amplifiers, higher gains are obtained, and compared with the same sheet beam TWT without cross-field focusing, higher efficiency is obtained. At 12GHz, the sheet beam TWT focused by cross-field gets both high gain and high efficiency when the input power varied from 0.01W to 0.8W.

Abstract:Based on velocity-modulating model, a nonlinear wave-beam interaction theory for folded-waveguide traveling wave tubes is developed. In this theory, the continuing beam is treated as discrete macro-particles with different initial phases. Then beam-wave interaction and energy exchange are analyzed at each crossing point between beam-tunnel and wave-tunnel. Compared with PIC result, the error of output power predicted by this model is within 10%, and the error of saturated length is within 15%. The results of this model are significant for designing folded-waveguide traveling wave tubes.
