Abstract:This paper presents a finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulator for electromagnetic analysis and design applications in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). It is intended to be a complete FDTD model of an MRI system including all RF and low frequency field generating units and electrical models of the patient. The framework has been constructed with the assistance of object-oriented concepts. The detailed design procedure is described and the numerical method has been verified against analytical solutions for simple cases and also applied to real field calculations. The simulated results demonstrated that the proposed FDTD scheme can be used to analyze large-scale computational electromagnetic problems in MRI engineering.

Abstract:This paper presents a parallel-computing FDTD simulator for electromagnetic analysis and design applications in Magnetic Resonance Imaging system. It is intended to be a complete, high-performance FDTD model of an MRI system including all temporal RF and low-frequency field generating units and electrical models of the patient. The developed MRI-dedicated FDTD algorithm is adapted to a parallel computing architecture with the MPI library. Its capabilities are illustrated in two distinct, large-scale field problems. One concerns the interaction of RF-fields with human tissue at high magnitude fields. The other includes the characterization of the temporal eddy currents induced in the cryostat vessel during gradient switching. The presented examples demonstrate the computational efficiency and extended analyses available due to the parallel FDTD framework.
Three Dimensional Compensation Spherical Coils for Compact Atomic Magnetometers

Abstract:To avoid the broadening of Zeeman resonances of the vector atomic magnetometer working in an unshielded environment, the rapid and accurate magnetic compensation is necessary. A three dimensional mini spherical compensating system is presented, which can be used together with a chip-scale atomic magnetometer to realize an ultra-high precision field measurement. Based on the field gradient method, parameters are optimized to obtain a uniformity of 10-3 over the region of one half radius with a good tolerance on dimensional variations. A prototype applied in the single laser beam scheme has been built and the experimental results demonstrate the validity of the design.
Simulation of 3-D electromagnetic field in the devices for magnetic fluid hyperthermia

Abstract:In order to improve therapeutic effects, the distribution of electromagnetic fields arisen by the magnetic fluid hyperthermia (MFH) treatment system needs to be investigated more explicitly. Three-dimensional finite element method (FEM) models for the prototype of the MFH treatment system were constructed and optimized. The distribution in static and harmonic magnetic fields were calculated and the magnetic intensities were compared when the spans of atmosphere between magnetic poles were 20 to 40 mm. Then magnetic intensity, induction and eddy current loss were also computed when the span was 30 mm. The results agree with the experimental measurements, which proves the effectiveness and feasibility of this method.

Abstract:Magnetic metamaterials exhibit extraordinary electromagnetic properties and have shown great potential in low-frequency near-field electromagnetic applications. A near-field device or system is consisted of different natural media and low-frequency metamaterials, and it is essential to develop a numerical methodology to compute the transient response of such a device or system. However, most existing works are dedicated to high-frequency metamaterials and wave propagation problems, whereas the study of numerical methodology for low-frequency metamaterials in magnetoquasistatic (MQS) fields is still blank and challenging. In this regard, a time-domain finite-element method (TDFEM) is first derived for MQS field applications of low-frequency metamaterials. The metamaterials are modeled as continuous media and approximated by a nonstandard Lorentz dispersion equation. The formulas to handle dispersive media in near field are derived based on the auxiliary equation method. The proposed method is validated in a 2-D axisymmetric case study by comparing its results with those of frequency-domain computations.
FP3D: A code for calculating 3D magnetic field and particle motion

Abstract:An efficient numerical code FP3D has been developed to calculate particle orbits and evaluate particle confinement in 3D magnetic fields including stellarators and tokamaks with 3D fields. The magnetic field is either calculated from coils directly or obtained from equilibrium codes. FP3D has been verified with the 3D equilibrium code VMEC (S. P. Hirshman, Phys. Fluids 26, 3553 (1983)) for magnetic field calculation and with the drift-kinetic code SFINCS (M. Landreman, Physics of Plasmas 21 (4) (2014)) for neoclassical transport. The code has been applied successfully to the NCSX stellarator (B. Nelson, Fusion Engineering and design 66 (2003)) for the calculation of neoclassical transport coefficient with the 3D magnetic field obtained directly from coils. FP3D is also used to calculate ripple losses in the tokamak EAST (W. Yuanxi, Plasma Science Technology 8 (3) (2006)).

Abstract:Achieving accurate transfer maps for realistic beam-line elements hinges on obtaining precise three-dimensional magnetic field data for both straight and curved beamlines. Among various numerical methods for electromagnetic field calculations, boundary element methods can offer results that strictly comply with Maxwell’s equations. In this study, we employ discrete magnetic moments for field reconstruction, storing magnetic field data locally using spherical harmonics conveniently without the need for integration. It shows efficient evaluation of arbitrary static magnetic fields, resulting an analytical representation of fields that can be differentiated and integrated. Leveraging the reconstructed field data, we utilize truncated power series algebra to compute precise design orbits and corresponding transfer maps.
Modeling the Magnetic Field of a Micro-Electromagnet in FEMLAB

Abstract:In 2D and 3D,the magnetic flux density from a micro electromagnet used for magnetic bio-separation was simulated with FEMLAB software.Due to the complexity of the structure,a fine meshing of the 3D structure is not possible.In order to minimize the memory consumption by reducing the size of the space domain surrounding the magnetic structure and by using a relatively coarse mesh,the effects of reducing the size of the space domain and using a coarse mesh that it is possible to perform a reference simulation with a large space domain and a fine mesh,and the errors made by the approximations were quantified.3D simulations were carried out with space domain and coarse meshing conditions identical to those in 2D simulations,and it is shown that the approximations in 3D simulations result in an underestimation of the order of 10%.The magnetic structure of 3D simulations can be compared with that of 2D simulations.
3D finite-difference transient electromagnetic modeling with a whole-space initial field

Abstract:A 3D finite-difference time-domain transient electromagnetic forward-modeling method with a whole-space initial field is proposed to improve forward efficiency and flexibility. The open-source software WFTEM3D is developed based on this method with two language versions: a FORTRAN code and a MATLAB code. First, the scheme calculates the whole-space initial field excited by magnetic dipole sources at an initial time after the current is switched off. Then, the scheme steps Maxwell’s equations in time using a staggered grid and a modified DuFort-Frankel method. Multiple magnetic dipole sources are superimposed to achieve the modeling for large loop configurations. The air is included into the grids and the Dirichlet boundary condition is used on the outer boundaries. The forward-modeling method has three advantages. First, the method can be used to simulate the whole-space model and the half-space model. Second, big mesh growth factors of 1.5–3 are allowed, which significantly improves the computational efficiency and facilitates the simulation of the multiscale model. Third, the approximate initial field can be calculated using a conductivity independent of the model, which facilitates the simulation of the nonflat topography model. These advantages are tested by examples. The model of a conductive brick in a half-space and the model of a complex conductor at a vertical contact are simulated. The run times are 0.48 and 9.72 s, respectively, on an ordinary computer with an Intel Core i7-6700 CPU, and the solutions are consistent with that presented in the literature. Examples of a multiscale model with three conductive bricks, a valley model, and a hill model are simulated, which further verify these advantages.

Abstract:Micromagnetic simulation is a numerical method to solve the Landau–Lifshitz–Gilbert (LLG) equation for magnetic dynamics. Most of the mainstream micromagnetic simulation packages, including the object oriented micromagnetic framework and MuMax3, perform simulation in the time domain. Here, utilizing the frequency domain simulation capability of COMSOL Multiphysics, we developed a COMSOL-based micromagnetic simulation module that solves the LLG equation in the frequency domain, which runs much faster and more accurate than time-domain simulations. Frequency-domain simulation is ideal for finding spin wave eigenmodes and the corresponding dispersions. We verify the validity of the module using three examples in the absence of dipolar field, and the inclusion of the dipolar field can be incorporated by combining this module with the alternating current/direct current module within COMSOL.

Abstract:With the development of the superconductive quantum interference device-transient electromagnetic (SQUID-TEM) system, stable B-field data with a higher signal-to-noise ratio and a longer time range can be obtained, which provides the possibility for high-precision and large-depth observation. However, due to the magnetic field properties of the magnetic viscosity (MV) effect and remanent magnetization intensity, using the traditional time-domain electromagnetic (TDEM) forward modeling method for simulation and analysis of B-field will introduce errors and cannot accurately depict the diffusion and attenuation characteristics of B-field. Therefore, a direct 3-D modeling of B-field in TDEM is proposed in the article. We first introduce the forward modeling method of static magnetic field for the calculation of initial value of B-field. Then, we achieve the iterative calculation of B-field of magnetic media during the transient electromagnetic (TEM) stage by substituting the Cole–Cole susceptibility model into the double-curl B-field diffusion equation of magnetization intensity. The validity of this method is verified using several analytical solutions. 3-D multimagnetic anomaly models are established, and the characteristics of B-field responses are observed in three dimensions. This method can realize the 3-D modeling of the B-field of the MV effect in TDEM, which is helpful to accurately understand the characteristics of the B-field attenuation curves and can provide a basis for the direct inversion interpretation of B-field data.

Abstract:Imposing an external magnetic field in short-pulse intense laser-plasma interaction is of broad scientific interest in related plasma research areas. We propose a simple method using a virtual current layer by introducing an extra current density term to simulate the external magnetic field, and demonstrate it with three-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations. The field distribution and its evolution in sub-picosecond time scale are obtained. The magnetization process takes a much longer time than that of laser-plasma interaction due to plasma diamagnetism arising from collective response. The long-time evolution of magnetic diffusion and diamagnetic current can be predicted based on a simplified analytic model in combination with simulations.

Abstract:Multiphysics simulation of Maxwell's and Landau–Lifshitz–Gilbert equations are performed to solve electromagnetic fields by considering the dynamics of magnetization. These equations are discretized, and the time-domain responses are computed using a finite-difference time-domain scheme. This study focuses on the acceleration of multiphysics simulations in terms of the multiscale modeling of the interaction between electromagnetic fields and magnetization. A nanoscale magnetic film is conducted to develop a method for measuring the magnetic properties using the near field of the magnetic film.

Abstract:We present a versatile numerical approach to simulating various magnetic phenomena using a level-set method. At the heart of our method lies a novel two-way coupling mechanism between a magnetic field and a magnetizable mechanical system, which is based on the interfacial Helmholtz force drawn from the Minkowski form of the Maxwell stress tensor. We show that a magnetic-mechanical coupling system can be solved as an interfacial problem, both theoretically and computationally. In particular, we employ a Poisson equation with a jump condition across the interface to model the mechanical-to-magnetic interaction and a Helmholtz force on the free surface to model the magnetic-to-mechanical effects. Our computational framework can be easily integrated into a standard Euler fluid solver, enabling both simulation and visualization of a complex magnetic field and its interaction with immersed magnetizable objects in a large domain. We demonstrate the efficacy of our method through an array of magnetic substance simulations that exhibit rich geometric and dynamic characteristics, encompassing ferrofluid, rigid magnetic body, deformable magnetic body, and multi-phase couplings.

Abstract:In most of the simulations of the extraction region of negative hydrogen ion sources, the single-aperture simulation is often adopted by researchers to study the plasma phenomenon due to its small simulation domain and short calculation time. However, due to the complex three-dimensional magnetic field structure in the extraction region of the negative hydrogen ion source, the single aperture often does not meet the periodicity. In this paper, the complex three-dimensional magnetic field topology is established. The magnetic field includes the magnetic filter field and the magnetic deflection field. The influence of the plasma sheath is taken into account. The electron extraction process in the multi-aperture structure of the extraction region of a negative hydrogen ion source is numerically calculated using the PIC method. Besides, the magnetic field structure is optimized. Ultimately, the electron beam uniformity near the plasma grid is improved effectively, which has certain guiding significance for engineering application.

Towards 3D Magnetic Force Microscopy

Abstract:Magnetic force microscopy (MFM) is long established as a powerful tool for probing the local manifestation of magnetic nanostructures across a range of temperatures and applied stimuli. A major drawback of the technique, however, is that the detection of stray fields emanating from a samples surface rely on a uniaxial vertical cantilever oscillation, and thus are only sensitive to vertically oriented stray field components. The last two decades have shown an ever-increasing literature fascination for exotic topological windings where particular attention to in-plane magnetic moment rotation is highly valuable when identifying and understanding such systems. Here we present a new method of detecting in-plane magnetic stray field components, by utilizing a home made split-electrode excitation piezo that allows the simultaneous excitation of a cantilever at its fundamental flexural and torsional modes. This allows for the joint acquisition of traditional vertical mode (V-MFM) images and a lateral MFM (L-MFM) where the tip-cantilever system is only sensitive to stray fields acting perpendicular to the torsional axis of the cantilever.

Abstract:In this paper, a Maxwell fisheye lens (MFL) for spin waves (SWs) focusing on a ferromagnetic film was presented via micromagnetic simulation. The Maxwell fisheye lens with graded refractive index distribution, achieved with gradient saturation magnetization, is designed to manipulate the wavefront of spin waves. The simulation results show that sub-wavelength focusing can be achieved by means of MFL with appropriate chosen parameters. Furthermore, simulation results also prove that the focusing properties of MFL can be tuned by external magnetic field. The MFL would be promising device for SWs focusing and wavefront manipulation.

Abstract:This article presents a full-wave 3-D FEM simulation methodology for magnetic toroidal cores up to 100 MHz. 3-D FEM simulation of magnetic toroidal cores has gained significant relevance in recent years. However, the use of magnetic materials in simulation presents some difficulties. Complex permeability is typically the only electromagnetic property used in magnetic toroidal cores' simulation. Nonetheless, recent results suggest that other properties must also be considered in high-frequency simulations. The presented methodology is particularly practical as it accurately models commercial cores easily. Electromagnetic properties valid for simulation are directly extracted from the cores with two simple setups. No complex fixtures or sample modification are required. Two ferrites (MnZn and NiZn) and a nanocrystalline core are studied. Complex permeability is characterized with a largely used method, and complex permittivity is extracted directly from the cores using the parallel plate capacitor method. With this methodology, cores' electromagnetic models are achieved, which are validated by comparing 3-D FEM simulations of several inductors with their measurements. Results lead to a simple and practical methodology to perform small-signal cores simulation in linear zone up to 100 MHz, which had not been achieved so far.
