Abstract:One miniaturized multilayer dual-band bandpass filter (BPF) is developed using standard low temperature co-fired ceramic (LTCC) technology. The filter makes use of four double-folded substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) resonators. Two sets of coupling paths between the source and load are implemented to generate dual-band responses. Utilizing this method, the two passbands can operate at independent frequencies and the bandwidth can be easily controlled. High isolation is obtained between two passbands, and two pairs of transmission zeros close to the passband edges are generated by source-load coupling, resulting in high skirt-selectivity. Good agreement between the simulated and measured results of the filter sample is obtained, with its high electrical performance validated.

Abstract:A novel dual-band quasi-elliptic filter with compact size and wide stopband has been proposed in this paper. It is realized by embedding two open loops between two coupled half wavelength resonators. Thus, the filter is compact in size. Two inner open loops are placed far enough to avoid mutual coupling. In addition, by loading two semi-lumped anti-coupled structures, a broad upper stopband can be obtained without adding extra circuit size. To verify the proposed idea, a dual-band filter sample has been designed and fabricated using single-layer printed circuit board (PCB) technology, and the measured S-parameters agree well with the simulated ones.
Collaborative Design of a New Dual-Bandpass 180 Hybrid Coupler

Abstract:A new dual-bandpass 180° hybrid coupler, based on four properly designed shorted-stub loaded stepped-impedance resonators, is proposed in this paper. In order to construct the collaboratively designed coupler/filter, the resonators are coupled magnetically and electrically with each other through three shorted stubs and an open coupled line, respectively. According to the approach of filter synthesis and the derived design equations, the characteristic admittances and electrical lengths of the resonators and coupling sections are determined to achieve the desired resonant frequencies, external Q factors, and internal coupling coefficients for dual passbands. A design procedure is provided. The design flexibilities for ratios of central frequencies and achievable bandwidths are explored. The component shows both filtering and power dividing functions within two specific passbands, whose good performances are demonstrated by the simulated and measured results. The two second-order passbands of a fabricated prototype are located at 2.42 and 5.84 GHz, with 4.6% and 5.2% bandwidths, respectively. The insertion losses are 1.0 and 1.4 dB over 3-dB power division. The isolations are better than 23.5 and 32.8 dB. In both the in-phase and out-of-phase responses, the in-band amplitude and phase imbalances are always within -1.6-0.6 dB and -6.5°-9.5°, respectively.

Abstract:A novel dual-mode filter using circular high-order mode cavities based on substrate integrated waveguide technology is presented. Its dual-mode character and transmission responses are carefully investigated. Filters in both Ka- and Q-band using two congruent cavities in folded configuration are designed, fabricated with standard PCB process, and measured. Abstract:In this letter, a novel circular open-loop resonator is presented. The field patterns of this type of dual-mode resonator are investigated using full-wave electromagnetic simulations. The applications of the dual-mode resonator as bandpass filters are proposed. A coupling and routing scheme is presented to model the operations of these filters. Advantages of using this type of filter are not only its low insertion loss, but also its controllable transmission zeros. Both simulated and measured results are presented.

Abstract:In this letter, a novel dual-band substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) filter with the perturbed circular cavity is presented. By introducing three kinds of metallic via perturbations combining different angles of feeding lines, five resonant modes TM010, TM110 (a pair of degenerate modes), and TM210 (a pair of degenerate modes) are perturbed to design the proposed filter. Thus, a dual-band filter with three transmission poles in the first passband and two transmission poles in the second passband is realized in a single circular cavity. Multiple transmission zeros are generated to increase the out-band performance. Then, a two-cavity dual-band filter is proposed by cascading two identical circular cavities, which shows better out-band suppression and return loss performance. The proposed dual-band filters are designed, fabricated, and measured in a standard printed circuit board (PCB) process at the $Q$ -band and the $V$ -band.

Abstract:This article proposes a new class of box-like substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) filters with wide stopband. First, a two-pole doublet bandpass filter with one finite-transmission zero (FTZ) is proposed using a new planar dual-mode rectangular SIW cavity, which is realized by TE 201 and TE 103 modes. TE 102 , TE 202 , and TE 104 modes are suppressed intrinsically by arranging feeding lines at the horizontal centerline of the dual-mode SIW cavity. Then, a four-pole box-section filter with one FTZ is proposed using one dual-mode and two single-mode rectangular SIW cavities, and the two single-mode cavities have different width-length ratios to further improve the stopband performance. To further improve the cutoff skirt, a new design method for five-pole quasi-elliptic SIW filter is proposed, which is achieved by the four-pole filter loaded by one single-mode SIW cavity. Some design examples with the center frequency of 10 GHz are presented to verify the performance of the proposed dual-mode SIW filters and the design method.

Abstract:A design method for compact substrate-integrated waveguide (SIW) bandpass filters (BPF) with controllable finite transmission zeros (FTZs) is proposed in this work, which is realised by a dual-layer SIW structure with two single-mode SIW cavities in the upper substrate and one dual-mode SIW cavity in the lower substrate. A basic dual-layer SIW BPF in box-section coupling scheme is proposed and analysed. Two FTZs can be produced for the bypass couplings between the diagonal cross-coupling paths. To enhance the cross-coupling strength, a magnetic coupling window between the two single-mode SIW cavities is designed. To further improve the selectivity of passband, a frequency-dependent coupling is designed between the two single-mode SIW cavities to produce an additional FTZ. Characteristics of the proposed dual-layer SIW filters with controllable FTZs are analysed. For the demonstration, some design examples with the centre frequency of 7.5 GHz and bandwidth of 240 MHz are presented, and two design examples are fabricated to verify the performance of the proposed design method for compact dual-layer SIW filters with controllable FTZs.

Abstract:A novel compact hybrid dual-band bandpass filter based on combline and substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) resonators is proposed. By exploring an SIW-based hybrid cavity structure, a controllable dual-band response is achieved. The low-frequency passband is obtained by the combline, or mushroom resonators and the high-frequency passband is formed by the TE101 and TE301 modes. Unlike other designs that use the main mode and the high-order mode of the same resonator, we innovative use the TE301 mode of the rectangular cavity and cleverly divide this rectangular cavity into two small cavities, and use its TE101 mode to form the second passband with the TE301 mode of the large cavity. To improve the selectivity and out-of-band suppression, three transmission zeros are configured in this design. In order to verify the proposed design concept, a compact dual-band filter using this hybrid resonance structure is fabricated and measured. It demonstrates good filtering performance, including a compact size of 0.45 x 1.09 lambda(0), a low insertion loss of 0.57 and 1.67 dB in the two bands, and a high-design flexibility.

Abstract:A dual‐mode dual‐band rectangular waveguide filtering antenna with fourth‐order Chebyshev response is presented. First, design equations and processes of filtering networks are presented. Then, filtering antenna is constructed through cross‐shaped slot for radiation instead of the output port of filtering networks. A pair of degenerated modes are exploited in waveguide resonator design to miniaturize the whole size and form two passbands. In addition, the bandwidth can be adjusted flexibly in proper range. A prototype at C‐band is fabricated and measured, showing two operation channels of 5 to 5.05 GHz and 5.1 to 5.15 GHz with high rejection between two bands. Good agreement is achieved between the simulations and measurements, showing excellent performance in terms of filtering, out‐of‐band rejection, and gain in bands.

Abstract:The design of compact dual‐mode/band filters based on gap waveguide and 3D printing technology is presented in this paper. The spatial power divider is designed to arrange the external coupling. And the multi‐slot middle plate is devised to manage the coupling between the dual‐mode cavities, introducing the non‐resonating modes to produce additional transmission zeros and improving the selectivity. Moreover, the dual‐mode/band filters structure are built up and optimized for 3D printing technology. Finally, the fabricated filters are measured to verify the design.

Abstract:In this article, an effective approach is proposed to design of compact single and dual-band patch filtering 180° hybrid couplers based on circular patch resonator. Without an additional circuit, the prescribed in-phase and out-of-phase specifications of the coupler are achieved by elaborately studying and utilizing the electric field distributions of the degenerate resonant modes in the unslotted/slotted patch resonators. Meanwhile, the desired single-/dual-band filtering responses are attained by virtue of the coupling extent between the two designed patch resonators in the back-to-back form. In our design, a pair of TM11-modes at first makeup a single passband for single-band operation, and a pair of TM11-like modes and a pair of TM12-like modes then construct the two separate passbands for dual-band operation, respectively. After the working principle is explained, the design procedure based on the coupling matrix is provided. For demonstration, two prototypes for single- and dual-band patch filtering 180° hybrid couplers are implemented, respectively. Measured results coincide well with simulated ones, verifying the proposed design concept.

Abstract:This article presents a novel class of compact and wide stopband bandpass filters based on dual-mode folded circular substrate integrated waveguide cavities (FCSIWCs). By employing both TM $_{020}$ and TM $_{110}$ modes of the FCSIWC as resonant modes and TM $_{010}$ mode as nonresonating mode, a doublet with two poles and two transmission zeros (TZs) is implemented. The TZs can be located either both below or both above the passband, or one below and one above. By combining the dual-mode FCSIWC and single-mode folded rectangular substrate integrated waveguide cavities (FRSIWCs), a class of compact and wide stopband four-pole box-section filters is proposed. In addition, a more selective five-pole extended box-section filter is implemented by loading a complementary split-ring resonator (CSRR) on the four-pole filter structure, without occupying any additional area. Two prototypes are fabricated and measured to validate the proposed filters.

Abstract:This paper proposes a novel dual-band filter by vertically stacking three dual-mode substrate integrated wave-guide (SIW) cavities. With a fully enclosed cavity, by using the TE101 and <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$\text{TE}_{201}$</tex> modes, a compact dual-band filter with a controllable frequency ratio is achieved. To improve the selectivity, the filter is configured with four transmission zeros (TZs) nearby the passband with good symmetry through cross coupling. The filter's size is only 0.61 <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$\lambda_{d}\times 1.15\lambda_{d}$</tex> , and the measured in-band minimum insertion loss is 0.92 and 1.45 dB for the first and second bands, respectively. The proposed filter shows the merits of a miniaturized size, low insertion loss, high selectivity, and good out-of-band suppression.

Abstract:This brief presents a series of miniaturized circular substrate integrated waveguide (CSIW) bandpass filters (BPFs) with compact size and wide stopband performance. The proposed BPFs exploit the sub-mode CSIW resonator with arbitrary angle and construct a class of second-order BPFs with mixed electric and magnetic coupling scheme. The relevant electromagnetic characteristics and operating mechanism have been analyzed in detail. In this instance, the transmission zeros (TZs) of the second-order BPFs can be positioned on the left or right side of the passband, and they can be flexibly adjusted. For validating the designed concept, a third-order sub-mode CSIW BPF has been designed, simulated, fabricated and measured as a specific example. The prototype exhibits a center frequency of 10 GHz with a 3-dB fractional bandwidth of 10%. Two TZs are generated in the vicinity of left and right passband. The upper stopband rejection can reach to 2.09f0 up to 20 dB. The simulated and measured results have demonstrated decent agreement.

Abstract:This study presents two multimode stepped-impedance structures to design single-and dual-band filters. Transmission zeroes are introduced for the single-band filter by using dual-mode stepped-impedance resonators. The single-band filter with high selectivity is centered at 6.02 GHz and has a fractional bandwidth (FBW) of 25.6%. Four stubs (two low frequency and two high frequency ones) are connected to the rectangular patch in the center to construct a quadruple-mode resonator. The independent conditions of the center frequencies of the high and low bands of the resonator are analyzed. A dual-band filter, which operates at 1.53 GHz and 2.44 GHz with FWBs of 12.1% and 14.1%, respectively is designed. The single-and dual-band filters are both fabricated with double-sided YBCO films and they can be used in mobile and satellite communications.

Abstract:Two novel planar filters with controllable mixed electromagnetic couplings are developed in this brief for C band operation. They are implemented with the half mode substrate integrated waveguide (HMSIW) technology. Owing to the half mode SIW cavity, both of the filters exhibit a compact size. The size of filter I is $0.53\,\,{\boldsymbol{\lambda }}_{\mathbf {0}} \times 0.30 {\boldsymbol{\lambda }}_{\mathbf {0}}$ , while the size of filter II is $0.47\,\,{\boldsymbol{\lambda }}_{\mathbf {0}} \times 0.28 {\boldsymbol{\lambda }}_{\mathbf {0}}$ . ( ${\boldsymbol{\lambda }}_{\mathbf {0}}$ represents the wavelength in the free space at the center frequency). A wide passband response with a quasi-elliptic characteristic and good out-of-band rejection is realized due to the transmission zeros (TZs) introduced by the etched slot structures on the top metal layer. By modifying the dimensions of the structure, the strength of the electric and magnetic coupling can be independently controlled, and consequently the position of TZs is controllable to achieve desired stopband response with high selectivity. As a validation of the concept, one prototype is fabricated and tested. Excellent agreement is observed between the simulated and measured results.

Abstract:A compact dual band bandpass filter is presented here, in which an open loop resonator connected with a short-circuited stub loaded in the midpoint is used. The central frequencies of two bands can be regulated by alternating the characteristic impedance and electrical length of the open loop and the short-circuited stub respectively. By introducing new coupling structure, the coupling coefficient of each band can be regulated independently. External coupling for each band is realized through common feed line and can also be regulated independently. Furthermore, source-load capacitive coupling is introduced to produce four transmission zeroes at the adjacent of two passbands. Thus, the bandwidths of this filter are controllable and good selectivity can be realized for narrow band application. A 2.4 GHz/5.7 GHz dual band microstrip filter with equal absolute bandwidths is designed and measured. The measured result agrees well with the simulation. The size of the filter is only 6.26 mm times 5.16 mm, and thus is very compact.

Abstract:In this article, a general method for implementing flexible filter design based on nested substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) circular cavity and cambered cavity is proposed. The unique physical structure of the cambered cavity allows for additional coupling between two nonadjacent resonators, resulting in additional transmission paths and cross-coupling in addition to the conventional main coupling. Furthermore, the cambered cavity can be divided into any angle to increase the topology order, which enables a more flexible topology and the implementation of various types of filters. Based on the electric field distribution characteristics and the difference in the frequency distribution of higher order resonant modes between the cambered cavity and the circular cavity, single-band bandpass filters (BPFs) with wide stopband can be implemented. In addition, dual-band BPFs and triple-band BPFs with different frequency ratios can be achieved by introducing additional transmission paths between cambered cavities. Filtering power dividers (FPDs) with controllable transmission zeros (TZs) can be realized by utilizing the cross-coupling phenomenon between the cambered cavity and the circular cavity. All of the designs are constructed, fabricated, and measured at 25 GHz to demonstrate their feasibility and universality. The measured results are in good agreement with the synthesized and simulated counterparts.
