Abstract:Quantum algorithm is the key to dig the potential power of quantum computing and make quantum computation more efficient than classical analogue. However, present methods of designing quantum algorithms are too tricky and lack of systematic development. The aim of quantum programming languages is to deal with this problem and try to provide a high-level and unifying description and treatment of quantum algorithms. In this paper, we prove that the two viewpoints of quantum programs – super-operators on density matrices and healthy transformers on quantum predicates – are equivalent. This result gives a complete characterization of physically realizable quantum programs in terms of healthy quantum predicate transformers. We further propose a simple programming language which is a pure quantum fragment describing the quantum part of a future quantum computer in Knill’s architecture. The denotational semantics, weakest (liberal) precondition semantics, and the connections between these three semantics are examined. To help reason about quantum programs involving quantum loops, we extend all existing proof rules for loops in classical probabilistic programs to the case of our pure quantum language.

Abstract:Quantum computing is regarded as a promising paradigm that may overcome the current computational power bottlenecks in the post-Moore era. The increasing maturity of quantum processors, especially superconducting ones, provides more possibilities for the development and implementation of quantum algorithms. As the crucial stages for quantum algorithm implementation, the logic circuit design and quantum compiling have also received significant attention, which covers key technologies such as quantum logic circuit synthesis (also widely known as quantum architecture search) and optimization, as well as qubit mapping and routing. Recent studies suggest that the scale and precision of related algorithms are steadily increasing, especially with the integration of artificial intelligence methods. In this survey, we systematically review and summarize a vast body of literature, exploring the feasibility of an integrated design and optimization scheme that spans from the algorithmic level to quantum hardware, combining the steps of logic circuit design and compilation optimization. Leveraging the exceptional cognitive and learning capabilities of AI algorithms, one can reduce manual design costs, enhance the precision and efficiency of execution, and facilitate the implementation and validation of the superiority of quantum algorithms on hardware.

Semantic embedding for quantum algorithms

Abstract:The study of classical algorithms is supported by an immense understructure, founded in logic, type, and category theory, that allows an algorithmist to reason about the sequential manipulation of data irrespective of a computation's realizing dynamics. As quantum computing matures, a similar need has developed for an assurance of the correctness of high-level quantum algorithmic reasoning. Parallel to this need, many quantum algorithms have been unified and improved using quantum signal processing (QSP) and quantum singular value transformation (QSVT), which characterize the ability, by alternating circuit ansätze, to transform the singular values of sub-blocks of unitary matrices by polynomial functions. However, while the algebraic manipulation of polynomials is simple (e.g., compositions and products), the QSP/QSVT circuits realizing analogous manipulations of their embedded polynomials are non-obvious. This work constructs and characterizes the runtime and expressivity of QSP/QSVT protocols where circuit manipulation maps naturally to the algebraic manipulation of functional transforms (termed semantic embedding). In this way, QSP/QSVT can be treated and combined modularly, purely in terms of the functional transforms they embed, with key guarantees on the computability and modularity of the realizing circuits. We also identify existing quantum algorithms whose use of semantic embedding is implicit, spanning from distributed search to proofs of soundness in quantum cryptography. The methods used, based in category theory, establish a theory of semantically embeddable quantum algorithms, and provide a new role for QSP/QSVT in reducing sophisticated algorithmic problems to simpler algebraic ones.

Abstract:In recent decades, the field of quantum computing has experienced remarkable progress. This progress is marked by the superior performance of many quantum algorithms compared to their classical counterparts, with Shor's algorithm serving as a prominent illustration. Quantum arithmetic circuits, which are the fundamental building blocks in numerous quantum algorithms, have attracted much attention. Despite extensive exploration of various designs in the existing literature, researchers remain keen on developing novel designs and improving existing ones. In this review article, we aim to provide a systematically organized and easily comprehensible overview of the current state-of-the-art in quantum arithmetic circuits. Specifically, this study covers fundamental operations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and modular exponentiation. We delve into the detailed quantum implementations of these prominent designs and evaluate their efficiency considering various objectives. We also discuss potential applications of presented arithmetic circuits and suggest future research directions.

Abstract:In recent years, fueled by the breakthroughs in the technology in quantum computation, there has been a rising interest in the noisy intermediate-scale quantum (NISQ) era. In addition to a large number of qubits, the study of error correction and quantum algorithms has made great progress. However, as a primary goal of quantum computation, making practicable quantum computers in the NISQ era still needs further study, mainly focusing on quantum computer organization, architecture, and circuit synthesis. This paper studies the quantum circuit synthesis in a small-scale universal quantum computing device called a “quantum system-on-chip” (QSoC). We analyze the quantum compilation of the hybrid architecture for a small-scaled universal quantum computational device with a specific size (quantum chip). Two kinds of on-chip circuit synthesis algorithms are proposed and discussed.

Abstract:In order to verify the functional correctness of quantum circuits or algorithms, a prominent approach is to specify them as quantum programs and semi-automatically deduce them in a theorem prover. It is indispensable to first formalize the semantics of the basic quantum language. We formalize in Coq an imperative language which allows for classical and quantum information interactions. We define small-step operational semantics and state-based denotational semantics. Then we prove a consistency theorem between these two semantics. A distribution-based denotational semantics is also defined and related to the state-based one. Finally, we describe a few typical quantum algorithms and utilize the distribution-based denotational semantics to verify their correctness.

Abstract:Semiconductors, a significant type of material in the information era, are becoming more and more powerful in the field of quantum information. In the last decades, semiconductor quantum computation was investigated thoroughly across the world and developed with a dramatically fast speed. The researches vary from initialization, control and readout of qubits, to the architecture of fault tolerant quantum computing. Here, we first introduce the basic ideas for quantum computing, and then discuss the developments of single- and two- qubit gate control in semiconductor. Till now, the qubit initialization, control and readout can be realized with relatively high fidelity and a programmable two-qubit quantum processor was even demonstrated. However, to further improve the qubit quality and scale it up, there are still some challenges to resolve such as the improvement of readout method, material development and scalable designs. We discuss these issues and introduce the forefronts of progress. Finally, considering the positive trend of the research on semiconductor quantum devices and recent theoretical work on the applications of quantum computation, we anticipate that semiconductor quantum computation may develop fast and will have a huge impact on our lives in the near future.

Abstract:This chapter introduces quantum programs with classical control flows in the superposition-of-data paradigm. It first defines the syntax of a quantum extension of a while-language. The operational semantics of the quantum while-language is carefully presented, and the denotational semantics of quantum while-programs is systematically investigated. For convenience of the reader, the basics of lattice theory and domain theory needed in defining the denotational semantics are briefly reviewed. The quantum while-language is further extended by introducing recursion. Several semantics of recursive quantum programs with classical control are studied. As an illustrative example, Grover search is programmed in the language defined in this chapter.

Abstract:We consider a programming language that can manipulate both classical and quantum information. Our language is type-safe and designed for variational quantum programming, which is a hybrid classical-quantum computational paradigm. The classical subsystem of the language is the Probabilistic FixPoint Calculus (PFPC), which is a lambda calculus with mixed-variance recursive types, term recursion and probabilistic choice. The quantum subsystem is a first-order linear type system that can manipulate quantum information. The two subsystems are related by mixed classical/quantum terms that specify how classical probabilistic effects are induced by quantum measurements, and conversely, how classical (probabilistic) programs can influence the quantum dynamics. We also describe a sound and computationally adequate denotational semantics for the language. Classical probabilistic effects are interpreted using a recently-described commutative probabilistic monad on DCPO. Quantum effects and resources are interpreted in a category of von Neumann algebras that we show is enriched over (continuous) domains. This strong sense of enrichment allows us to develop novel semantic methods that we use to interpret the relationship between the quantum and classical probabilistic effects. By doing so we provide the first denotational analysis that relates models of classical probabilistic programming to models of quantum programming.

Abstract:We investigate the formal semantics of a simple imperative language that has both classical and quantum constructs. More specifically, we provide an operational semantics, a denotational semantics and two Hoare-style proof systems: an abstract one and a concrete one. The two proof systems are satisfaction-based, as inspired by the program logics of Barthe et al for probabilistic programs. The abstract proof system turns out to be sound and relatively complete, while the concrete one is sound only.

Abstract:We study an on-chip quantum computational system with a particular scale in the presence of noise. These conditions can be summarized as "noisy intermediate-scale quantum (NISQ)". It is a challenge to build reasonable architectures, control flows, and quantum algorithms for the noisy medium-scale quantum conditions, which are highly concern by industry. This paper proposes a quantum computing chip framework that contains both classical and quantum parts. The quantum program developers only focus on the programming design and no need to consider the details of the underlying hardware. This design maintains the transparency for a quantum computer as a classical computer.

Abstract:Implementing quantum algorithms on realistic devices requires translating high-level global operations into sequences of hardware-native logic gates, a process known as quantum compiling. Physical limitations, such as constraints in connectivity and gate alphabets, often result in unacceptable implementation costs. To enable successful near-term applications, it is crucial to optimize compilation by exploiting the capabilities of existing hardware. Here we implement a resource-efficient construction for a quantum version of AND logic that can reduce the compilation overhead, enabling the execution of key quantum circuits. On a high-scalability superconducting quantum processor, we demonstrate low-depth synthesis of high-fidelity generalized Toffoli gates with up to 8 qubits and Grover's search algorithm in a search space of up to 64 entries. Our experimental demonstration illustrates a scalable and widely applicable approach to implementing quantum algorithms, bringing more meaningful quantum applications on noisy devices within reach.

Abstract:The use and adoption of quantum computers by the wider computing community is diminished by the need to adopt new programming techniques. These techniques involve moving from a high-level language where the programmer can define and manipulate objects, to a quantum model where the programmer defines and configures the circuits at a gate level. Previous work by the authors aimed to ease this transition through the use of a software development kit (Qx86 SDK) that emulates a traditional CPU for execution on a quantum computer, but only delivered a raw capability. The current work now presents a number of new methods that extends and improves the SDK's capability. These methods include optimizing traditional logic gate emulation, multiple gate simplification methods, reducing the number of required qubits and alternative optimized techniques for many CPU instructions. A quantum machine code mapping method is described that enhances the emulation of a traditional/quantum hybrid CPU prototype. While still orders of magnitude slower than the performance of a traditional CPU in terms of arithmetic, logic and bitwise operations, execution speed is shown to be markedly improved (in some cases by more than 1,000%) and without introducing any unrealistic requirements (that is, all execution can be performed utilizing less than 32 qubits). The usefulness of the SDK has now been enhanced as a reference guide, where the programmer/researcher can contrast traditional methods versus multiple quantum methods of execution.

Abstract:Any quantum program on a realistic quantum device must be compiled into an executable form while taking into account the underlying hardware constraints. Stringent restrictions on architecture and control imposed by physical platforms make this very challenging. In this paper, based on the quantum variational algorithm, we propose a novel scheme to train an Ansatz circuit and realize high-fidelity compilation of a set of universal quantum gates for singlet-triplet qubits in semiconductor double quantum dots, a fairly heavily constrained system. Furthermore, we propose a scalable architecture for a modular implementation of quantum programs in this constrained systems and validate its performance with two representative demonstrations, the Grover's algorithm for the database searching (static compilation) and a variant of variational quantum eigensolver for the Max-Cut optimization (dynamic compilation). Our methods are potentially applicable to a wide range of physical devices. This work constitutes an important stepping-stone for exploiting the potential for advanced and complicated quantum algorithms on near-term devices.

Abstract:By using the circuit model which is the most representative in the study of quantum computing, the quantum computing process was simulated and two of the important quantum algorithms - the Deutsch's algorithm and the quantum Fourier transform, were implemented. The experiment takes the quantum register structure as the storage medium, which is better than the form of matrix in space. The operation processes adopt the bit manipulation to avoid the mass time for matrix multiplications and the results can be used by other quantum algorithms directly. The consumption of time and space is reduced by the adoption of new type of structure and the operation processes are simpler and straighter, which provides a groundwork for the further development of the platform.
