Abstract:An icing model considering supercooled icing for aircraft icing problem is investigated. Most icing models are based on the method of Messinger, in which the ice and liquid water are distinguished by the temperature of fusion, 273.15 K, and the heat balance equation of supercooled water film is solved to determine the ice accretion. It has been confirmed in experiments that the temperature of ice surface is below the freezing temperature of water. An icing model considering supercooled ice surface is investigated and is compared with the traditional icing model on both ice growth rate and 2D ice shape prediction. In addition, the surface temperature of icing cylinder is computed to verify this model. The results show that this supercooled icing model, compared with traditional model, predicts about twice the growth rate of the traditional model. The ice shape results of supercooled icing model fit well with the experiment results in the temperature range from -4.4 to -28.3°C, while the traditional model cannot work well below -10°C.
