Abstract:This work aimed at detecting the role of the extracellular polysaccharide (EPS) and organic acid produced by Bacillus mucilaginosus Lv1-2 on silicon dissolution from kaolinite and illite ores. The kaolinite and illite ores were leached with the strain in shake flasks. The extracted EPS and organic acid from the cultured strain were used to leaching kaolinite and illite ores and were characterized by FTIR and HPLC, respectively. The results showed that both of them could promote silicon dissolution from the ores. The silicon concentration used in the leaching of both kaolinite and illite ores increased with the weight of EPS. 1 g/L of EPS enhanced silicon dissolution by 84% and 94% in kaolinite and illite leaching respectively. The organic acid produced by the strain mainly included oxalic acid, citric acid, acetic acid and malic acid. Each of the organic acid could increase the silicon concentration of leaching liquids. Among them oxalic acid presented the best efficiency. Based on the present results, it can be concluded that EPS and organic acid from B. mucilaginosus Lv1-2 play a very important role in bioleaching kaolinite and illite ores. © 2012 American Scientific Publishers All rights reserved.
