Abstract:The hypolipidemic effects of black vinegar powder (BVP) have been long speculated, but lack of scientific evidence. We here show that BVP significantly decreased the serum total cholesterol (TC) (22.2%, P < 0.01) and triglycerides (TG) (24.4%, P < 0.01), increased high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) (22.0%, P < 0.05) and HDL-C/TC (48.3%, P < 0.01) in rats, while weight gain suppression was not significant (P > 0.05). One of hypolipidemic mechanisms of BVP is anti-oxidation by polyphenols and flavonoids in BVP, which suppressed lipid per-oxidation, and inhibited the enzyme activity of lipase (IC50, 1.98 mg/ml) in a dose-dependent manner. These results suggest that BVP could be a potential therapeutic alternative for the treatment of obesity and cardiovascular diseases caused by high cholesterol/fat diet as a functional food.
