Abstract:Biomass is an important renewable source, which usually requires a depolymerization process before its further utilization for the production of biofuels and chemicals. The continuous hydrothermal catalytic conversion in the packed-bed reactor may provide an effective means for biomass depolymerization; however, the effects of particle characteristics and operating parameters on the fluid flow and mass transfer, as well as the catalytic performance should be further investigated. In this study, a numerical approach was established in a tubular hydrothermal reactor packed with solid acid catalysts. The results show that increasing the catalyst porosity can effectively break the internal diffusion limitation and strengthen the catalytic conversion performance of the substrate by the catalytic bed in the reactor. At a catalyst porosity of 8 %, the maximum average reaction rate increased by 23.6 % when the percentage of macroporous pores increased from 30 % to 90 %, which enhanced the mass transfer inside the catalyst. When the average mesopore pore size increased from 5 nm to 50 nm, the average reaction rate improved by 9.7 % and 7.6 % for the catalyst with low porosity (8 %)and high porosity (50 %), respectively. Increasing the flow rate enhances the average reaction rate inside the catalyst, but also results in a lower glucose yield at the reactor outlet. The reactor outlet had a maximum glucose yield of 4.9 % at a flow rate of 1.3 mL/min. When the substrate concentration increased from 1.0 g/L to 20 g/L, the average reaction rate inside the catalyst increased significantly, but the glucose yield showed a decreasing trend.
