Abstract:Electro-osmotic consolidation is an effective method for soft ground improvement. In this paper, a testing device was developed to conduct the onedimensional electro-osmosis experiment for expansive soils. During electro-osmosis process, the water discharge, the voltage and the water pressure at different positions of the specimen were monitored. After the test, the moisture content and the undrained shear strength at different positions in the sample were measured to get a more detailed analysis of the influence of Electro-osmosis. Test results showed that during the electroosmosis, the pore water was discharged from the soil sample and the drainage rate decreased gradually. The electric current also decreased from 0.79 A to 0.21 A. In this process, the voltage was nonlinearly distributed in the sample with a relative high reduction near the anode. There was a negative excess pore pressure produced in the sample with the largest pressure observed near the anode. The moisture content of the sample decreased after the test with the largest decrease occurring near the cathode. Finally, the results of the vane shear tests demonstrated an undrained shear strength distribution that was opposite to the moisture content distribution.
