Abstract:Combustion of aluminizcd solid propellant produces aluminum oxide condensed particles. Condensed particles including aluminum and aluminum oxide may collide in rocket motors. It is crucial to understand condensed particle collision by experiments for modelling that in solid rocket motor. In the present work, an experimental study is carried out to determine the collision of AI/Al2O3 condensed particles at various impact velocities for aluminized composite propellant by means of an innovative apparatus. On the basis of theoretical analysis of droplets collision, an experimental method for study on collision of condensed particles is proposed, and an innovative experimental apparatus is designed and produced. The impact angle of two particle streams is regulated by choosing two condensed particle generators in different directions, which causes the relative impact velocity to be regulated without changing the particle size distributions before collision. Particles before and after collision are collected using quench bomb technique. Without change of particle size distribution before collision, particle collection experiments at various relative velocities of collision are carried out. The morphology and size of collected particles are analyzed with the aid of scanning electron microscope and Malvern Mastersizer 2000. It is found that particles are spherical with diameter distributing from 0.03 pm to 200 , and the diameter mainly concentrates on 0.3 urn to 100 nm. Fine particles (smaller than 10 μm) are regular spherical in shape with smooth surface, while large particles (larger than 10 nm) are spherical in shape with rough surface. In addition, for the relative velocities of collision ranging from 30.0 m/s to 81.9 m/s, the mean particle diameter d43 and d5v decrease after collision. Fragmentation is generally the outcome of collision. Furthermore, after the collision, the particles with diameter larger than 10 fragment with volume fraction reduced significantly, and the volume fraction of particles from 2 μm to 10 μm changes slightly. For particles with diameter smaller than 2 μm, the volume fraction increases greatly. Copyright © (2012) by the International Astronautical Federation.
