Abstract:An integral effects test facility,advanced core cooling mechanism experiment facility(ACME) was designed to verify the performance of the passive safety system and validate its safety analysis codes of a pressurized water reactor power plant.Three test facilities for AP1000 design were introduced and review was given.The problems resulted from the different working pressures of its test facilities were analyzed.Then a detailed description was presented on the working pressure selection of ACME facility as well as its characteristics.And the approach of establishing desired testing initial condition was discussed.The selected 9.3 MPa working pressure covered almost all important passive safety system enables the ACME to simulate the LOCAs with the same pressure and property similitude as the prototype.It's expected that the ACME design would be an advanced core cooling integral test facility design.

Abstract:CAP1400 has been developed as a new passive safety and generation III + reactor based on AP600/1000 technology. Like previous reactors, the small-break loss-of-coolant-accident (SBLOCA) is still one of the most important safety problems that have to be considered before it's widely applications. Although extensive theoretical and experimental results of SBLOCA have been reported in previous studies, the dominant SBLOCA transient mechanisms and the important thermal hydraulic phenomena have not been clearly explained, especially in the passive safety system, due to the complexity of the passive safety nuclear reactor geometry coupled with the transient two-phase fluid interactions. In this study, a new constructed thermal hydraulic integral effect test facility, named as advanced core-cooling mechanism experiment (ACME), which is designed and constructed for supporting CAP1400 safety review, was used to investigate the SBLOCA transient in passive safety plants. 1-inch, 2-inch and 8-inch cold leg breaks and a double-ended direct-vessel-injection (DEDVI) line break were selected as the critical and essential SBLOCA tests. The system pressure, injection flow rate, core level and fluid temperature were considered as the safety related parameters to investigate the system responses to the SBLOCA. In addition, the conditions that affect the SBLOCA chronology were investigated as well. Also, a few important thermal hydraulic phenomena observed in the ACME SBLOCA test were reported, and their effects on the transient were analyzed. The dominant SBLOCA transient mechanisms in the passive safety system were presented. This study not only helps to improve the understanding of SBLOCA mechanisms and important thermal hydraulic phenomena in passive safety systems, but also sheds some lights on SBLOCA analysis, test facility scaling, safety performance evaluation, code simulation and even the design optimization for the passive safety PWRs.

Abstract:For the design verification and licensing of newly pressurized water reactors (PWRs), many integral test facilities were conducted. From the above integral test facilities, the obtained experimental results were adopted in the assessment and development of safety analysis codes. In this study, scaling analysis and design parameters of integral test facilities were summarized from the perspective of scaling method, basic scaling choice, equipment design, test matrix and application. The scaling method is the guideline for establishing scaling ratios of integral test facilities and different scaling methods were proposed. With the basic scaling choices of system pressure, geometrical parameters, working medium and equipment material, the design parameters of equipment were discussed. The test matrix and application of different integral test facilities were compared. Abstract:In the scaled-down test facilities that simulate the accident transient process of the prototype nuclear power plant, the stored energy release in the metal structures has an important influence on the accuracy and effectiveness of the experimental data. Three methods of stored energy analysis are developed, and the mechanism behind stored energy distortion in the test facilities is revealed. Moreover, the application of stored energy analysis is demonstrated for the ACME test facility newly built in China. The results show that the similarity requirements of three methods analyzing the stored energy release decrease gradually. The physical mechanism of stored energy release process can be characterized by the dimensionless numbers including Stanton number, Fourier number and Biot number. Under the premise of satisfying the overall similarity of natural circulation, the stored energy release process in the scale-down test facilities cannot maintain exact similarity. The results of the application of stored energy analysis illustrate that both the transient release process and integral total stored energy of the reactor pressure vessel wall of CAP1400 power plant can be well reproduced in the ACME test facility. Abstract:Low pressure reactor is a small size advanced reactor with power of 180 MWt, which is under development at Nuclear Power Institute of China. In order to assess the ability and feasibility of passive safety system, several tests have been implemented on the passive safety system (PSS) test facility. During the LOCA and SBO accident, the adequate core cooling is provided by the performance of passive safety system. In addition the best-estimate thermal hydraulic code, CATHARE V2.1, has been assessed against cold leg LOCA test. The calculation results show that CATHARE is in a satisfactory agreement with the test for the steady state and transient test.

Abstract:The passive containment cooling system (PCCS) is one of the main passive safety systems in the advanced pressurized water reactor (APWR), which will utilize natural phenomena to remove the heat released from the reactor to the environment during the postulated design basic accidents for preventing the overpressure of the containment shell. It is significant for the evaluation on PCCS performance in the design by the numerical simulation with the analysis code. In this paper, a new developed containment analysis code with self-reliance intellectual property rights is used to simulate the containment transients of the advanced pressurized water reactor with the PCCS performance during the postulated LOCA. The sensitivity analyses on some concerned factors are performed. The results show that lower initial humidity in the containment, higher initial environment humidity, higher initial containment temperature and environment temperature will cause higher transient pressure peak in containment during the postulated accident.

Abstract:The passive containment cooling system (PCCS) of the 3rd generation APWR utilizes natural phenomena to transfer the heat released from the reactor to the environment during postulated designed basic accidents. Steam condensation on the inner surface of the containment shell is one of the most dominate mechanism to keep the ambient conditions within the design limits. Extensive experiment and theoretical research shows condensation is a complex process, gas pressure, film temperature and velocity of the gas have impact on the heat transfer coefficient.To span the expected range of conditions and provide proper model for evaluating the condensation heat transfer process, SCOPE test facility was designed by State Nuclear Power Technology Research & Development Centre (SNPTRD) in various conditions anticipated the operating range of CAP 1400 in accident conditions. Pressurized test section with a rectangular flowing channel was used, with one of the walls systems was designed for different pressures, gas temperatures, velocities and coolant water temperatures. Facility components, test section structure, supplying systems and measurement technology were described in this paper, also results of some pre-tests was introduce to show property of the facility.

Abstract:Based on previous proposals for a new type of nuclear power plant with passive containment heat transfer following an accident, this work utilizes the RELAP5 program to establish a thermal hydraulic model test system. Focusing on a test circuit with a single natural circulation loop, a parameter sensitivity analysis was performed by changing parameters, such as ambient pressure, ambient temperature, and degree of surface undercooling, and the design boundary conditions for a single natural circulation test circuit were obtained. Employing a comprehensive natural circulation test circuit, the heat transfer capability of the air-cooling system of the integrated test system was evaluated by assuming parameters such as the cold source ambient temperature, providing an important reference for the design of the main equipment.

Abstract:As the development of the nuclear industry, passive technology turns out to be a remarkable characteristic of advanced nuclear power plants. Since the 20th century, much effort has been given to the passive technology, and a number of evolutionary passive systems have developed. Thoughts have been given to upgrade the existing reactors with passive systems to meet stricter safety demands. In this paper, the CPR1000 plant, which is one kind of mature pressurized water reactor plants in China, is improved. with some passive systems to enhance safety. The passive systems selected are as follows: (1) the reactor makeup tank (RMT); (2) the advanced accumulator (A-ACC); (3) the in-containment refueling water storage tank (IRWST); (4) the passive emergency feed water system (PEFS), which is installed on the secondary side of SGs; (5) the passive depressurization system (PDS). Although these passive components is based on the passive technology of some advanced reactors, their structural and trip designs are adjusted specifically so that it could be able to mitigate accidents of the CPR1000. Utilizing the RELAP5/MOD3.3 code, accident analyses (small break loss of coolant accident, large break loss of coolant accident, main feed water line break accident) of this improved CPR1000 plant were presented to demonstrate three different accident mitigation methods of the safety system and to test whether the passive safety system preformed its function well. In the SBLOCA, all components of the passive safety system were put into work sequentially, which prevented the core uncover. The LBLOCA analysis illustrates the contribution of the A-ACCs whose small-flow-rate injection can control the maximum cladding temperature effectively. In the MFLB, due to the proper design of the PEFSs, the PRZ was not overfilled by water so that no liquid leakage to the containment happened. Massive radiation release was prevented. Generally speaking, the passive safety system functions as expected, and the three accident mitigation method were proved to be useful for mitigating corresponding accidents. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. Online Hybrid Test Using a Finite Element Program and an Explicit Integration Scheme

Abstract:A new online hybrid test system combined with substructuring techniques and incorporating finite element methods is developed. In the proposed system, numerical substructure analysis is conducted by ABAQUS/Explicit. An ABAQUS user subroutine is used as the interface between the main control program and ABAQUS to impose the target displacements and determine the reaction forces. No iteration is needed in this system, making it suitable for physical testing. As the approach also avoids the need to modify source code, it will be appealing to a number of real engineering applications. The proposed system adopts a separated-model framework, operator-splitting integration scheme, and data exchange through a socket mechanism. The earthquake responses of a simple steel moment-resisting frame are simulated, and the results obtained from the new system are compared to those obtained from the conventional analysis. It is found that the results obtained from the new system are accurate, demonstrating the applicability and efficiency of the proposed approach. The optimal test parameters are also studied to gain the most accurate results in the minimum time.

Abstract:Different containment safety features are analyzed. Combined with the accident process analysis and physical model classification, a containment system analysis hierarchy, which can be applied to advanced containment system simulation and experimental verification, is built. Different physical models, experimental methodology, scaling criteria, PIRT, mathematical models and test process logic are included. It attempts to provide theoretical support and design reference for future containment system characteristics verification experiments. It is also applicable for the system simulation, including complex coupling of physical phenomena and processes.

Abstract:The passive containment cooling system (PCCS) is one main component of the various passive safety systems in the advanced 3rd generation pressurized water reactor. Several containment analysis codes are modified for the simulation and analysis on the PCCS by researchers. These codes for the PCCS were validated by comparison with transient test data from some separate effect tests and integral tests, and used to evaluate the heat-removed capability of the PCCS under the postulated events, such as a loss-of-coolant accident (LOCA) and a main steam line break (MSLB). The advanced 3rd generation pressurized water reactors of AP1000 project were build in China, and the future advanced PWR with higher power will be researched and designed. So it is very important to develop a new code with self-owned intellectual property rights, which is used for the simulation and analysis of the PCCS performance. In this paper, the main ideas of the code design, including the framework of the code, the important mechanism models and the code validation, etc., will be introduced. In addition, the computational fluid Dynamics (CFD) codes also had been applied to solve some thermal-hydraulic problems in Nuclear Reactor Safety (NRS) analysis.

Abstract:In order to meet the needs of domestic reactor severe accident analysis program, a MIDAC (Module In-vessel Degraded severe accident Analysis Code) is developed and maintained by Xi'an Jiaotong University. As the accuracy of the calculation results of the analysis program is of great significance for the formulation of severe accident mitigation measures, the article select three experiments to evaluate the updated severe accident models of MIDAC. Among them, QUENCH-06 is the international standard No.45, QUENCH-16 is a test for the analysis of air oxidation, and FROMA is an out-of-pile fuel rod melting experiment recently carried out by Xi'an Jiaotong University. The heating and melting model with lumped parameter method and the steam oxidation model with Cathcart-Pawel and Volchek-Zvonarev correlations combination in MIDAC could better meet the needs of severe accident analysis. Although the influence of nitrogen still need to be further improved, the air oxidation model with NUREG still has the ability to provide guiding significance for engineering practice.

Abstract:The containment passive cooling feature is one important indicator for advanced Pressurize Water Reactors (PWRs). Several innovative passive cooling designs have been proposed in industries, such as double steel cooling structure (DSS) in AP1000, the Vertical Heat exchanger in VVER, the water cooling wall in High Temperature Reactor (HTR), and ice cooler in some Generation II PWR plants. A universal passive cooling experimental facility is under design and construction. The object of this facility is performance testing and optimization of new passive cooling facilities. Considering of the diverse characteristics of the different passive cooling system, include mechanism of heat and mass transfer, conditions for operation and facility structures, a theoretical scaling study is necessary to be applied before a technical design process. Some general passive cooling models were made based on existing industrial designs. To enhance the compatibility of these models and future designs, pivotal and common parameters for these passive cooling designs were provided by scaling study. The main test facility will be built based on these parameters. For every different design, special appurtenances will be added to the main facility to complete the test device for special purposes. Time scale, facility height and physical properties were the most important parameters for the main test facility. Heat transfer area ratio, hydraulic diameter, volume flow rate and wall thickness of DSS was defined for appurtenances design.

Abstract:To study the electromagnetic behavior of superconducting conductors under multi-physics field coupling and evaluate their reliability, a new superconducting conductor test facility (Super-X) has been developed at the Institute of Plasma Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences (ASIPP). The control system of Super-X provides a range of functions including remote monitoring, plant control, data acquisition, timing synchronization, and interlocking protection. It is crucial for the operation of Super-X. Currently, the Super-X prototype is in the developmental phase. To fulfill the requirements for controlling, data acquisition, and interlocking protection of the control system, the control and interlocking protection response time is set to be within 100ms, with the timing synchronization accuracy of 1ms, and the data acquisition frequency ranges from 1 to 10 kHz. This study presents the design of the control system for Super-X, discusses the system's requirements and specifications, and demonstrates its current integration.

Abstract:China initiative Accelerator Driven System (CiADS) is a 10 MW lead - bismuth eutectic (LBE) cooled subcritical reactor, which is designed to demonstrate the engineering feasibility of the ADS concept. An elaborated methodology was developed to deal with the nonlinear mechanical behaviors of fuels under transients. Based on this methodology, the fuel mechanical module was accomplished and coupled with the neutron dynamics module and thermo-hydraulics module in the extended BELLA code. The cladding mechanical simulation under frequent beam trips for CiADS was carried out using BELLA, and fatigue analysis based on the experimental data was discussed. Combined with the CiADS beam-trip transients, it is concluded that the tolerance of the CiADS cladding to beam trips is between 1000 and 11,000 cycles.

Abstract:In recent years, a substantial number of theoretical, numerical and experimental R&D activities are carried out on the supercritical water-cooled reactor (SCWR), which proposed as one of the Generation IV nuclear power plants by the Generation IV International Forum (GIF). A research plan has been proposed by GIF on the designing and licensing of a SCWR prototype, which is planned to be constructed and operated in the near future. In the preliminary stage of this research plan a fuel assembly, with its experimental loop, will be constructed and tested in SCWR operating conditions. This article reviews the research activities carried out in the Supercritical Water Reactor Fuel Qualification Test (SCWR-FQT) project in Europe and Super Critical Reactor In-Pipe Test Preparation (SCRIPT) project in China. These research activities studied both neutronic and thermal-hydraulic behavior of the test fuel assembly and auxiliary systems of SCWR fuel test facility. CFD simulations, subchannel analysis and system simulations coupled with neutronics code are performed to study the performance of the tested fuel assembly, especially safety related aspects.

Abstract:A new on-line hybrid test system incorporated with the substructuring technique is developed. In this system, a general-purpose finite element software is employed to obtain the restoring forces of the numerical substructure accurately. The restart option is repeatedly used to accommodate the software with alternating loading and analysis characteristic of the on-line test but without touching the source code. An eight-storey base-isolated structure is tested to evaluate the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed test system. The overall structure is divided into two substructures, i.e. a superstructure to be analysed by the software and a base-isolation layer to be tested physically. Collisions between the base-isolation layer and the surrounding walls are considered in the test. The responses of the overall structure are reasonable, and smooth operation is achieved without any malfunction. Copyright (C) 2006 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
Validation of the ATHROC Code with NUPEC Tests

Abstract:Xi’an Jiaotong University (XJTU) has developed a containment code called ATHROC (Analysis of Thermal Hydraulic Response of Containment) for the design of a new advanced PWR (Pressurized Water Reactor) in China. In the present work, the well-known NUPEC (NUclear Power Engineering Corporation) tests are simulated to validate the code. NUPEC test M-7-1 and M-4-3 were separately simulated to investigate the mixing effect of hot gas and steam being injected at a low elevation with or without spray cooling in the dome. An analytical model consisting of 26 cells and 67 flow paths was established. In addition, 62 distributed heat structures and 1 lumped heat structure were also modeled in the simulation. The predictions of both simulated tests agree relatively well with the experiment data. The maximum relative errors of predicted temperature for M-7-1 test and M-4-3 test were about 10% and 3%, respectively. The peak pressures of the two tests were about 3.8% and 6.7% overestimated, respectively, and the peak helium concentrations were about 25% and 20% overestimated, respectively. On the other hand, thermal and helium stratification within the containment were well predicted.
