Abstract:China is one of the frequent natural disasters affected countries. Natural hazards like floods, droughts cause enormous property damage and human causalities. In this study: (a) The historical Flood/Drought index series (FD-Index series) were clustered into Flood/Drought Feature regions using Ward's Hierarchical cluster analysis. (b) The FD-Index Series of Representative sites were extracted to analyze the temporal variability. Ten-year average smoothness method was used to show the variation tendency and power spectrum was to reveal the Periodic Features. Accordingly, the 127-site FD-Index series was divided into Eight Flood/Drought characteristic regions, that is The North part of Northeast China Region, The Circum-Bohai-Sea Region, The North part of North China Region, The South part of North China Region, The Middle-lower Yangtze Plain Region, The Southwest China Region, The South China Region and The Northwest China Region; then recurrence characters were extracted from the Regional representative sites.
