Abstract:Meandering and braided rivers occur in the Qinghai-Tibet plateau. The development of meanders in the plateau is confined by mountains and sediment composition. This paper studies the characteristics of meanders and oxbow lakes and their relations with local topography. The Baihe River and Heihe River are tributaries of the Yellow River in the north-eastern part of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. The rivers are meandering with extremely high sinuosity and numerous oxbow lakes. Field investigations were performed in 2010-2011 for studying the morphological features. Digital Elevation Model and Google Earth satellite images were used for analyzing the characteristics of the rivers, meanders and oxbow lakes. The average sinuosity of the Heihe River is 2.46 and which of the Baihe River is 1.68. The main causes for the big difference are their different valley widths and channel gradient. The Heihe Rive has a valley width in the range of 0.4-3.6 km and relative narrow channels, whereas the Baihe River has a valley width in the range of 0.6-4.2 km and relatively wide channels. Oxbow lakes were formed due to meanders cutoffs. The number of oxbow lakes is a function of the frequency of cutoffs and density of meanders. The Heihe River has much higher number density than the Baihe River because of less channel gradient and flow discharge.
