Abstract:Due to their high water content and loose structure, soft soils often do not meet the bearing capacity requirements of shallow foundation design. Dynamic compaction technology is used to improve the performance of soft soils widely distributed in Nanjing, China. Oftentimes, in situ testing is conducted to evaluate the performance of the treated soils. The accuracy of the in situ test method determines the efficiency of foundation treatment and the available design capacity. Piezocone penetration test (CPTu) technology can continuously obtain cone tip resistance, side wall friction resistance, and pore water pressure of the soil layers. Due to the continuous penetration, CPTu technology provides low disturbance, high precision, and detailed data. Based on the CPTu test results, the test soil can be layered to estimate the undrained shear strength, sensitivity, overconsolidation ratio, compression modulus, permeability coefficient, consolidation coefficient, deformation characteristics, and other engineering characteristics of each layer. In this research, the CPTU test was conducted before and after the dynamic compaction of soft soil foundation. A comparative analysis of the laboratory and field test results was conducted. After dynamic compaction, the undrained shear strength, compression modulus, and bearing capacity of silty clay increased by 83.49%, 88.54%, and 75.56% respectively, while 55.2%, 71.72%, and 46.76%, respectively, for silty clay mixed with silty sand. Undrained shear strength, compression modulus, and bearing capacity of foundation were evaluated in detail, which further embodies the advantages of CPTU technology in the evaluation of influence of dynamic compaction on soft soil foundations.
