Abstract:Given an irreducible well-generated complex reflection group W with Coxeter number h, we call a Coxeter element any regular element (in the sense of Springer) of order h in W; this is a slight extension of the most common notion of Coxeter element. We show that the class of these Coxeter elements forms a single orbit in W under the action of reflection automorphisms. For Coxeter and Shephard groups, this implies that an element c is a Coxeter element if and only if there exists a simple system S of reflections such that c is the product of the generators in S. We moreover deduce multiple further implications of this property. In particular, we obtain that all noncrossing partition lattices of W associated to different Coxeter elements are isomorphic. We also prove that there is a simply transitive action of the Galois group of the field of definition of W on the set of conjugacy classes of Coxeter elements. Finally, we extend several of these properties to Springer’s regular elements of arbitrary order.

Abstract:For Coxeter groups with sufficiently large braid relations, we prove that the sequence of powers of a Coxeter element has unbounded reflection length. We establish a connection between the reflection length functions on arbitrary Coxeter groups and the reflection length functions on universal Coxeter groups of the same rank through the solution to the word problem for Coxeter groups. For Coxeter groups corresponding to a Coxeter matrix with the same entry everywhere except the diagonal, upper bounds for the reflection length of the powers of Coxeter elements are established.

Abstract:In this note, we give a new proof of a result of Matthew Dyer stating that in an arbitrary Coxeter group $W$, every pair $t,t'$ of distinct reflections lie in a unique maximal dihedral reflection subgroup of $W$. Our proof only relies on the combinatorics of words, in particular we do not use root systems at all. As an application, we deduce a new proof of a recent result of Delucchi-Paolini-Salvetti, stating that the poset $[1,c]_T$ of generalized noncrossing partitions in any Coxeter group of rank $3$ is a lattice. We achieve this by showing the more general statement that any interval of length $3$ in the absolute order on an arbitrary Coxeter group is a lattice. This implies that the interval group attached to any interval $[1,w]_T$ where $w$ is an element of an arbitrary Coxeter group with $\ell_T(w)=3$ is a quasi-Garside group.

Abstract:In this paper we study affine reflection subgroups in arbitrary infinite Coxeter groups of finite rank. In particular, we study the distribution of roots of Coxeter groups in the root subsystems associated with affine reflection subgroups. We give a characterization of limit roots arising from affine reflection subgroups. We also give a characterization of when a Coxeter group may possess affine reflection subgroups. We show that the intersection of the normalized isotropic cone (associated with the Tits representation of a Coxeter group) and the imaginary cone consists of limit roots closely related to affine reflection subgroups.

Abstract:In a series of previous papers, we studied sortable elements in finite Coxeter groups, and the related Cambrian fans. We applied sortable elements and Cambrian fans to the study of cluster algebras of finite type and the noncrossing partitions associated to Artin groups of finite type. In this paper, as the first step towards expanding these applications beyond finite type, we study sortable elements in a general Coxeter group WW. We supply uniform arguments which transform all previous finite-type proofs into uniform proofs (rather than type by type proofs), generalize many of the finite-type results and prove new and more refined results. The key tools in our proofs include a skew-symmetric form related to (a generalization of) the Euler form of quiver theory and the projection π↓cpi _downarrow ^c mapping each element of WW to the unique maximal cc-sortable element below it in the weak order. The fibers of π↓cpi _downarrow ^c essentially define the cc-Cambrian fan. The most fundamental results are, first, a precise statement of how sortable elements transform under (BGP) reflection functors and second, a precise description of the fibers of π↓cpi _downarrow ^c. These fundamental results and others lead to further results on the lattice theory and geometry of Cambrian (semi)lattices and Cambrian fans.

Noncrossing partitions and Bruhat order

Abstract:We give a criterion for Bruhat order on noncrossing partitions corresponding to the Coxeter element $c=s_1 s_2\cdots s_n$. Using it we prove that the Bruhat order endows noncrossing partitions with a lattice structure. We then explain what happens if we change the Coxeter element; in that case the lattice property fails and we explain which order to consider to get the same lattice structure as for the Coxeter element $c$. In particular we get bijections between noncrossing partitions associated to distinct Coxeter elements, which fix the set of reflections.

Abstract:When W is a finite reflection group, the noncrossing partition lattice NCP_W of type W is a rich combinatorial object, extending the notion of noncrossing partitions of an n-gon. A formula (for which the only known proofs are case-by-case) expresses the number of multichains of a given length in NCP_W as a generalised Fuss-Catalan number, depending on the invariant degrees of W. We describe how to understand some specifications of this formula in a case-free way, using an interpretation of the chains of NCP_W as fibers of a Lyashko-Looijenga covering (LL), constructed from the geometry of the discriminant hypersurface of W. We study algebraically the map LL, describing the factorisations of its discriminant and its Jacobian. As byproducts, we generalise a formula stated by K. Saito for real reflection groups, and we deduce new enumeration formulas for certain factorisations of a Coxeter element of W.

The Bruhat Order of a Finite Coxeter Group and Elnitsky Tilings

Abstract:Suppose that $W$ is a finite Coxeter group and $W_J$ a standard parabolic subgroup of $W$. The main result proved here is that for any for any $w \in W$ and reduced expression of $w$ there is an Elnitsky tiling of a $2m$-polygon, where $m = [W : W_J]$. The proof is constructive and draws together the work on E-embedding in \cite{nicolaidesrowley1} and the deletion order in \cite{nicolaidesrowley3}. Computer programs which produce such tilings may be downloaded from \cite{github} and here we also present examples of the tilings for, among other Coxeter groups, the exceptional Coxeter group $\mathrm{E}_8$.

Abstract:In [5], Elnitsky constructed three elegant bijections between classes of reduced words for Type $\mathrm{A}$, $\mathrm{B}$ and $\mathrm{D}$ families of Coxeter groups and certain tilings of polygons. Abstract:In this article we give a simple, almost uniform proof that the lattice of noncrossing partitions associated with a well-generated complex reflection group is lexicographically shellable. So far a uniform proof is available only for Coxeter groups. In particular we show that, for any complex reflection group $W$ and any element $x\in W$, every $x$-compatible reflection order is a recursive atom order of the corresponding interval in absolute order. Since any Coxeter element $\gamma$ in any well-generated complex reflection group admits a $\gamma$-compatible reflection order, the lexicographic shellability follows from a well-known result due to Bj\"orner and Wachs.

Abstract:The reflection length of an element of a Coxeter group is the minimal number of conjugates of the standard generators whose product is equal to that element. In this paper, we prove the conjecture of McCammond and Petersen that reflection length is unbounded in any non‐affine Coxeter group. Among the tools used, the construction of word‐hyperbolic quotients of all minimal non‐affine Coxeter groups might be of independent interest.

Abstract:We extend the usual notion of fully commutative elements from the Coxeter groups to the complex reflection groups. Then we decompose the sets of fully commutative elements into natural subsets according to their combinatorial properties, and investigate the structure of these decompositions. As a consequence, we enumerate and describe the form of these elements in the complex reflection groups.

Abstract:We study the restriction of the strong Bruhat order on an arbitrary Coxeter group $W$ to cosets $x W_L^\theta$, where $x$ is an element of $W$ and $W_L^\theta$ the subgroup of fixed points of an automorphism $\theta$ of order at most two of a standard parabolic subgroup $W_L$ of $W$. When $\theta\neq\mathrm{id}$, there is in general more than one element of minimal length in a given coset, and we explain how to relate elements of minimal length. We also show that elements of minimal length in cosets are exactly those elements which are minimal for the restriction of the Bruhat order.

Abstract:We use geometry of Davis complex of a Coxeter group to prove the following result: if G is an infinite indecomposable Coxeter group and $H\subset G$ is a finite index reflection subgroup then the rank of H is not less than the rank of G. This generalizes results of <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="math/0305093" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/math/0305093">math/0305093</a>. We also describe some properties of the nerves of the group and the subgroup in the case of equal ranks.

Abstract:We lay the foundations of the first-order model theory of Coxeter groups. Firstly, with the exception of the 2-spherical non-affine case (which we leave open), we characterize the superstable Coxeter groups of finite rank, which we show to be essentially the Coxeter groups of affine type. Secondly, we characterize the Coxeter groups of finite rank which are domains, a central assumption in the theory of algebraic geometry over groups, which in many respects (e.g. λ-stability) reduces the model theory of a given Coxeter system to the model theory of its associated irreducible components. In the second part of the paper we move to specific definability questions in right-angled Coxeter groups (RACGs) and 2-spherical Coxeter groups. In this respect, firstly, we prove that RACGs of finite rank do not have proper elementary subgroups which are Coxeter groups, and prove further that reflection independent ones do not have proper elementary subgroups at all. Secondly, we prove that if the monoid S i m ( W , S ) of S-self-similarities of W is finitely generated, then W is a prime model of its theory. Thirdly, we prove that in reflection independent RACGs of finite rank the Coxeter elements are type-determined. We then move to 2-spherical Coxeter groups, proving that if ( W , S ) is irreducible, 2-spherical even and not affine, then W is a prime model of its theory, and that if W Γ and W Θ are as in the previous sentence, then W Γ is elementary equivalent to W Θ if and only if Γ ≅ Θ , thus solving the elementary equivalence problem for most of the 2-spherical Coxeter groups. In the last part of the paper we focus on model theoretic applications of the notion of reflection length from Coxeter group theory, proving in particular that affine Coxeter groups are not connected.

Abstract:We extend the notion of proper elements to all Coxeter groups. For all infinite families of finite Coxeter groups we prove that the probability a random element is proper goes to zero in the limit. This proves a conjecture of the third author and A. Yong regarding the proportion of Schubert varieties that are Levi spherical for all infinite families of Weyl groups. We also enumerate the proper elements in the exceptional Coxeter groups.

Abstract:For an element w of a Coxeter group W, there are two important attributes, namely its length, and its expression as a product of disjoint cycles in its action on Φ, the root system of W. This paper investigates the interaction between these two features of w, introducing the notion of the crossing number of w, κ ⁢ ( w ) . Writing w = c 1 ⁢ ⋯ ⁢ c r as a product of disjoint cycles, we associate to each cycle c i a "crossing number" κ ⁢ ( c i ) , which is the number of positive roots α in c i for which w ⋅ α is negative. Let Seq κ ⁢ ( w ) be the sequence of κ ⁢ ( c i ) written in increasing order, and let κ ⁢ ( w ) = max ⁡ Seq κ ⁢ ( w ) . The length of w can be retrieved from this sequence, but Seq κ ⁢ ( w ) provides much more information. For a conjugacy class X of W, let κ min ⁢ ( X ) = min ⁡ { κ ⁢ ( w ) ∣ w ∈ X } and let κ ⁢ ( W ) be the maximum value of κ min across all conjugacy classes of W. We call κ ⁢ ( w ) and κ ⁢ ( W ) , respectively, the crossing numbers of w and W. Here we determine the crossing numbers of all finite Coxeter groups and of all universal Coxeter groups. We also show, among other things, that for finite irreducible Coxeter groups, if u and v are two elements of minimal length in the same conjugacy class X, then Seq κ ⁢ ( u ) = Seq κ ⁢ ( v ) and κ min ⁢ ( X ) = κ ⁢ ( u ) = κ ⁢ ( v ) .

Abstract:We study and classify a class of representations (called generalized geometric representations) of a Coxeter group of finite rank. These representations can be viewed as a natural generalization of the geometric representation. The classification is achieved by using characters of the integral homology group of certain graphs closely related to the Coxeter graph. On this basis, we also provide an explicit description of those representations on which the defining generators of the Coxeter group act by reflections.

Around first-order rigidity of Coxeter groups

Abstract:By the work of Sela, for any free group $F$, the Coxeter group $W_ 3 = \mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z} \ast \mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z} \ast \mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z}$ is elementarily equivalent to $W_3 \ast F$, and so Coxeter groups are not closed under elementary equivalence among finitely generated groups. In this paper we show that if we restrict to models which are generated by finitely many torsion elements (finitely torsion-generated), then we can recover striking rigidity results. Our main result is that if $(W, S)$ is a Coxeter system whose irreducible components are either spherical, or affine or (Gromov) hyperbolic, and $G$ is finitely torsion-generated and elementarily equivalent to $W$, then $G$ is itself a Coxeter group. This combines results of the second author et al. from [MPS22, PS23] with the following main hyperbolic result: if $W$ is a Coxeter hyperbolic group and $G$ is $\mathrm{AE}$-equivalent to $W$ and finitely torsion-generated, then $G$ belongs to a finite collection of Coxeter groups (modulo isomorphism). Furthermore, we show that there are two hyperbolic Coxeter groups $W$ and $W'$ which are non-isomorphic but $\mathrm{AE}$-equivalent. We also show that, on other hand, if we restrict to certain specific classes of Coxeter groups then we can recover the strongest possible form of first-order rigidity, which we call first-order torsion-rigidity, namely the Coxeter group $W$ is the only finitely torsion-generated model of its theory. Crucially, we show that this form of rigidity holds for the following classes of Coxeter groups: even hyperbolic Coxeter groups and free products of one-ended or finite hyperbolic Coxeter groups. We conjecture that the same kind of phenomena occur for the whole class of Coxeter groups. In this direction, we prove that if $W$ and $W'$ are even Coxeter groups which are elementarily equivalent, then they are isomorphic.
