Abstract:Abstract Chinese aesthetics mainly derives from Confucianism and Taoism. This essay attempts to revisit the main theories that run through Confucian and Taoist aesthetics in order to make them comprehensible within a broader global context. Aesthetics in Confucianism pertains to fields as various as literature, art, music and the natural environment. It holds the idea of ren 仁 (human-heartedness) as the essential attribute of beauty. In comparison, Taoist aesthetics emphasizes the centrality of tao 道 (way), which transpires through naturalness, and, as such, considers natural forms to offer the highest degree of beauty. In order to understand variations of representation and interpretation in Confucian and Taoist aesthetics, the essay discusses accordingly the three fundamentals of Chinese aesthetics: beauty, feeling of beauty, and artistic image. This comparative study will hopefully bring to light differences and similarities between two traditions, which may also resonate within the wider context of modern global aesthetics.

Abstract:The beauty of poetic sentiment,silence and nature in the contemporary Chinese literature,is related with Taoist aesthetic orientation.From the suspicion,negation,being against dissimilation and advoca- ting individual spirit in the contemporary Chinese literature,we can find the resource support of Taoist culture and tradition.Beyond the main topics such as equity,justice,democracy and legality,the contemporary Chi- nese literature inherits and surpasses the spiritual resource of Taoist culture,and participates in the construc- tion of contemporary culture.Taoist culture does not regard the moral construction as the main purpose,and it would not conquer the spiritual space of human being with logical deduction.Instead,it pursues the signifi- cance of the relationship between individual existence and the world from individual cognition,independent character and intuitionistic aesthetic style.Therefore,Taoist culture enriches the expressive mode of contem- porary Chinese literature and takes part in the creationary construction of it.

Abstract:This chapter studies the development and basic ideas of Chinese aesthetics by reviewing the history of aesthetic perspective from the Han Dynasty; the Wei, Jin, and Southern and Northern Dynasties; the Tang Dynasty; the Five Dynasties; the Song and Yuan Dynasties; and the Ming and Qing Dynasties. The ancient Chinese artists pursued the artistic conception of beauty, namely, the integration of mind and objects, sentiments, and scenes, and the fusion of subjective emotions and objective landscape. Nevertheless, this conception overlooks the function of practice, the intermediary between mind and objects. Actually, there are three fundamental elements: emotion (first feeling) of aesthetic subjects; artistic conception sensed through the painting brush in practice (perception); poetry, books, songs, and paintings as artistic finished products (containing essence and sentiments). It is the combination, conformity, and harmonious co-existence of these three essentials (namely subject–practice–object) that constitute the art system aesthetics or design aesthetics.

Abstract:Through comparisons between traditional Chinese and Western aesthetics, this article tries to explain the worldwide significance of Chinese aesthetic tradition in the twenty-first century. In contrast to cognitive-rational spirit and the tendency to distinguish the subjectives and objectives of traditional Western aesthetics, traditional Chinese aesthetics shows a distinctive practical-emotional spirit and a tendency to harmoniously unite human beings with nature, and believes that beauty is, first and foremost, a free state or way ( Dao ) of human life; the most important thing for human beings is how to make their own lives and existence beautiful. Therefore, it puts forward some persuasive and valuable insights into beauty and art, thus playing an independent and constructive role in intercultural aesthetic dialogues of the twenty-first century.

Abstract:The relationship between “expression” and“Tao”is the basic theme in the Chinese literature. During the period of Wei and Jin dynasties, some intellectuals such as Cao Pi and Liu Xie began to establish this relationship, and “Tao” coming from Confucianism became the core of Chinese literature. In Tang dynasty,“Haofang” and “Xionghun” constituted the original style of“Expressing Tao”, and “Tao” became concrete from abstract. So, realistic feature of “Tao” was highlighted after the mid-Tang dynasty. Furthermore, advocacy and practice on the relationship between “expression” and “Tao” laid the foundation for “carrying Tao”thought of neo-Confucianism in Song dynasty.

Abstract:The Tang Dynasty was a period of cultural flourishing in ancient China and an important stage in developing Taoism philosophy. This paper aims to explore the intellectual origins of Tang Dynasty Taoism philosophy, analyse its formation and development background, and examine its influence on contemporary thought. Tang Dynasty Taoism philosophy drew from the essence of various schools of thought in pre-Qin China, integrating Laozi's Taoism ideas, Zhuangzi's concept of nature, and the Taoism notions of self-cultivation. Influenced by the social context of the Tang Dynasty, Taoism philosophy flourished. The changing social and political environment, cultural exchanges, intellectual integration, and the relationship between Tang Dynasty literati and Taoism philosophy profoundly impacted the formation and development of Tang Dynasty Taoism philosophy. Emphasising the harmony between the universe and humanity, Tang Dynasty Taoism philosophy focused on moral cultivation, the pursuit of personal enlightenment, and social care and governance. It exerted a far-reaching influence on later generations and continues to hold significant value in contemporary thought. In-depth research into the intellectual origins and connotations of Tang Dynasty Taoism philosophy is of great significance for enriching and expanding the development of Chinese philosophy and providing wisdom and guidance for contemporary society.

Abstract:An important achievement of Tang Dynasty poetry was the birth of the theory of "Yijing". The theory of "Yijing" was an important category in Chinese classical aesthetics. During the Wei and Jin Dynasties, the theory of "imagery" had been put forward. However, aestheticians in the Tang Dynasty did not stop at "imagery". In terms of one category, it is possible to elevate "imagery" to a new category of "yijing" through the enlightenment of Chan thought, which further promoted the development of poetry after the Tang Dynasty.

Abstract:The aesthetics of the late Ming Dynasty was developed in the age when the Chinese feudalistic system slowly fell into decay and the civil society gradually rose up.For the aesthetic spirit,it at that time emphasized to "dissolve elegance into vulgarity",which had three different aspects.Firstly,when came to the controversy between the "unofficial" and the "orthodox" history of the Aesthetics of novels,it valued the cultural significance of the "unofficial" anecdotes,not only accentuating its popular entertaining appeal,but also stressing its advantage of emotional enlightenment over the "orthodoxy".Secondly,in the field of drama and music,universal emotion theory represented by Tang Xianzu promoted the composition and spread of the popular literature and art whose main subject was "emotion",and advanced the movement of "dissolving elegance into vulgarity",making the "elegant/court/ceremonial music" as a form of the "vulgar/popular music".Thirdly,concerning aesthetics in architecture,it advocated the standard of the"beauty lying in the long length",as well as the aesthetic taste of the attention and appreciation to the nonegos.Meanwhile,it attached importance to the feelings and vibrations towards the scenery and the outside environment.

Abstract:In the 21st century,the post-modern literature and art have witnessed their prevalence.They clear value and lose their value judgment and have been called mess art.How can Chinese culture and art gradually step out of marginalized crisis,put them in a proper position and hence meet their own splendor? This must be seriously thought over by all young scholars and artists.The harmony out of traditional rules,the responsibility for managing important affairs and the good spirits implied in concepts like meanness and filial piety should not be given up as garbage.On the contrary,the excellent traditional Chinese art,including Chinese calligraphy,should be greatly inherited and hence developed due to the national identity and spirits implied in it.
