Abstract:We assign every metric space $X$ the value $t_{D}HD(X)$, an ordinal number or one of the symbols $-1$ or $\Omega$, and we call it the $D$-variant of transfinite Hausdorff dimension of $X$. This ordinal assignment is primarily constructed by way of the $D$-dimension, a transfinite dimension function consistent with the large inductive dimension on finite dimensional metric spaces while also addressing shortcomings of the large transfinite inductive dimension. Similar to Hausdorff dimension, $t_{D}HD(\cdot)$ is monotone with respect to subspaces, and is a bi-Lipschitz invariant. It is also non-increasing with respect to Lipschitz maps and satisfies a coarse intermediate dimension property. We also show that this new transfinite Hausdorff dimension function addresses the primary goal of transfinite Hausdorff dimension functions; to classify metric spaces with infinite Hausdorff dimension. In particular, we show that if $t_{D}HD\geq \omega_0$, then $HD(X) = \infty$. $t_{D}HD(X)<\omega_1$ for any separable metric space, and that one can find a metrizable space with $t_{D}HD(X)$ bounded between a given ordinal and it's successive cardinal with topological dimension $0$.

Abstract:For a metric space $X$ with a compatible measure $\mu$, Genevois and Tessera defined the Scaling Group of $(X,\mu)$ as the subgroup $\Gamma$ of $\mathbb{R}_{>0}$ of positive real numbers $\gamma$ for which there are quasi-isometries of $X$ coarsely scaling $\mu$ by a factor of $\gamma$. We show that for any finitely generated subgroup $\Gamma$ of $\mathbb{R}_{>0}$ there exists a space $N_\Gamma$, bi-Lipschitz equivalent to a graph of finite degree, with scaling group $\Gamma$.

Abstract:Buyalo and Lebedeva have shown that the asymptotic dimension of a hyperbolic group is equal to the dimension of the group boundary plus one. Among the work presented here is a partial extension of that result to all groups admitting $\mathcal{Z}$-structures; in particular, we show that $\hbox{asdim}G\geq \hbox{dim}Z+1$ where $Z$ is the $\mathcal{Z}$-boundary.

Abstract:. We introduce an asymptotic coarse structure on proper metric spaces and study the associated C * -algebras and assembly maps. We establish an asymptotic Lipschitz homotopy invariance theorem for the K -theory of these C * -algebras and the K -homology of the metric space, and show that the assembly map is an isomorphism over an asymptotically scaleable space.

Abstract:Inspired by a classical theorem of topological dimension theory, we prove that every geodesic metric space of asymptotic dimension $n$ containing a bi-infinite geodesic can be coarsely separated by a subset $S$ of asymptotic dimension equal to or smaller than $n-1$.\\ We define asymptotic Cantor manifolds, and we prove that every finitely generated group contains such a manifold. We also state some questions related to them.

On isometric universality of spaces of metrics

Abstract:A metric space $(M, d)$ is said to be universal for a class of metric spaces if all metric spaces in the class can be isometrically embedded into $(M, d)$. In this paper, for a metrizable space $Z$ possessing abundant subspaces, we first prove that the space of bounded metrics on $Z$ is universal for all bounded metric spaces (with restricted cardinality). Next, in contrast, we show that if $Z$ is an infinite discrete space, then the space of metrics on $Z$ is universal for all separable metric spaces. As a corollary of our results, if $Z$ is non-compact, or uncountable and compact, then the space of metrics on $Z$ is universal for all compact metric spaces. In addition, if $Z$ is compact and countable, then there exists a compact metric space that can not be isometrically embedded into the space of metrics on $Z$.

Abstract:In the context of a metric measure space $(X,d,\mu)$, we explore the potential-theoretic implications of having a finite-dimensional Besov space. We prove that if the dimension of the Besov space $B^\theta_{p,p}(X)$ is $k>1$, then $X$ can be decomposed into $k$ number of irreducible components (Theorem 1.1). Note that $\theta$ may be bigger than $1$, as our framework includes fractals. We also provide sufficient conditions under which the dimension of the Besov space is $1$. We introduce critical exponents $\theta_p(X)$ and $\theta_p^{\ast}(X)$ for the Besov spaces. As examples illustrating Theorem 1.1, we compute these critical exponents for spaces $X$ formed by glueing copies of $n$-dimensional cubes, the Sierpiński gaskets, and of the Sierpiński carpet.

Asymptotic dimension for covers with controlled growth

Abstract:We prove various obstructions to the existence of regular maps (or coarse embeddings) between commonly studied spaces. For instance, there is no regular map (or coarse embedding) $\mathbb H^n\to\mathbb H^{n-1}\times Y$ for $n\geq 3$, or $(T_3)^n \to (T_3)^{n-1}\times Y$ whenever $Y$ is a bounded degree graph with subexponential growth, where $T_3$ is the $3$-regular tree. We also resolve a question of Benjamini-Schramm-Timár, proving that there is no regular map $\mathbb H^2 \to T_3 \times Y$ whenever $Y$ is a bounded degree graph with at most polynomial growth, and no quasi-isometric embedding whenever $Y$ has subexponential growth. Finally, we show that there is no regular map $F^n\to \mathbb Z\wr F^{n-1}$ where $F$ is the free group on two generators. To prove these results, we introduce and study generalizations of asymptotic dimension which allow unbounded covers with controlled growth. For bounded degree graphs, these invariants are monotone with respect to regular maps (hence coarse embeddings).

Abstract:Let $X_{0}$ be a complete hyperbolic surface of infinite type with geodesic boundary which admits a countable pair of pants decomposition. As an application of the Basmajian identity for complete bordered hyperbolic surfaces of infinite type with limit sets of 1-dimensional measure zero, we define an asymmetric metric (which is called arc metric) on the quasiconformal Teichm\"uller space $\mathcal{T}(X_{0})$ provided that $X_{0}$ satisfies a geometric condition. Furthermore, we construct several examples of hyperbolic surfaces of infinite type satisfying the geometric condition and discuss the relation between the Shiga's condition and the geometric condition.

Abstract:We study the dimension theory of limit sets of iterated function systems consisting of a countably infinite number of contractions. Our primary focus is on the intermediate dimensions: a family of dimensions depending on a parameter $\theta \in [0,1]$ which interpolate between the Hausdorff and box dimensions. Our main results are in the case when all the contractions are conformal. Under a natural separation condition we prove that the intermediate dimensions of the limit set are the maximum of the Hausdorff dimension of the limit set and the intermediate dimensions of the set of fixed points of the contractions. This builds on work of Mauldin and Urba\'nski concerning the Hausdorff and upper box dimension. We give several (often counter-intuitive) applications of our work to dimensions of projections, fractional Brownian images, and general H\"older images. These applications apply to well-studied examples such as sets of numbers which have real or complex continued fraction expansions with restricted entries. We also obtain several results without assuming conformality or any separation conditions. We prove general upper bounds for the Hausdorff, box and intermediate dimensions of infinitely generated attractors in terms of a topological pressure function. We also show that the limit set of a 'generic' infinite iterated function system has box and intermediate dimensions equal to the ambient spatial dimension, where 'generic' can mean either 'full measure' or 'comeagre.'

Abstract:In this paper, for a metrizable space $Z$, we consider the space of metrics that generate the same topology of $Z$, and that space of metrics is equipped with the supremum metrics. For a metrizable space $X$ and a closed subset $A$ of it, we construct a map $E$ from the space of metrics on $A$ into the space of metrics on $X$ such that $E$ is an extension of metrics and preserves the supremum metrics between metrics.

Abstract:A famous open problem asks whether the asymptotic dimension of a CAT(0) group is necessarily finite. For hyperbolic groups, it is known that asymptotic dimension of the group is bounded above by the dimension of the boundary plus one, which is known to be finite. For CAT(0) groups, the latter quantity is also known to be finite, so one approach is to try proving a similar inequality. So far those efforts have failed. Motivated by these questions we work toward understanding the relationship between large scale dimension of CAT(0) groups and small scale dimension of the group's boundary by shifting attention to the linearly controlled dimension of the boundary. To do that, one must choose appropriate metrics for the boundaries. In this paper, we suggest two candidates and develop some basic properties. Under one choice, we show that linearly controlled dimension of the boundary remains finite; under another choice, we prove that macroscopic dimension of the group is bounded above by twice the linearly controlled dimension of the boundary plus one. Other useful results are established, some basic examples are analyzed, and a variety of open questions are posed.

Abstract:In this paper, we answer a question of Nussbaum, Priyadarshi, and Lunel [Positive operators and Hausdorff dimension of invariant sets, Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 364(2) (2012) 1029-1066.]. We also show that the Hausdorff dimension and box dimension of the attractor generated by a finite set of contractive infinitesimal similitudes are the same. Further, we extend many results of dimension theory to complete metric spaces. In the last part, we fill the gaps in the proofs of some articles, which are related to the dimension theory, and hint at some possible improvements in the recent papers.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider a fixed metric space (possibly an oriented Riemannian manifold with boundary) with an increasing sequence of distance functions and a uniform upper bound on diameter. When the metric space endowed with the pointwise limit of these distances is compact, then there is uniform and Gromov-Hausdorff (GH) convergence to this limit. When the metric space also has an integral current structure of uniformly bounded total mass (as is true for an oriented Riemannian manifold with boundary that has a uniform bound on total volume), we prove volume preserving intrinsic flat convergence to a subset of the GH limit whose closure is the whole GH limit. Abstract:Assouad-Nagata dimension addresses both large and small scale behaviors of metric spaces and is a refinement of Gromov's asymptotic dimension. A metric space $M$ is a minor-closed metric if there exists an (edge-)weighted graph $G$ satisfying a fixed minor-closed property such that the underlying space of $M$ is the vertex-set of $G$, and the metric of $M$ is the distance function in $G$. Minor-closed metrics naturally arise when removing redundant edges of the underlying graphs by using edge-deletion and edge-contraction. In this paper, we determine the Assouad-Nagata dimension of every minor-closed metric. Our main theorem simultaneously generalizes known results about the asymptotic dimension of $H$-minor free unweighted graphs and about the Assouad-Nagata dimension of complete Riemannian surfaces with finite Euler genus.
