Abstract:With the stone energy increasingly dried up and the environment polluted severely, developing renewable clean energy is already in extreme urgency. Exploiting new energy storage and transformation systems has progressively become the focal point in the energy research field. Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have attracted extensive attention as a new kind of crosslinked polymers owing to the high crystallinity, excellent porosity, and favorable stability. The last decade has witnessed the great progress in crystalline COFs for the application in various arenas. The tailor-made functional skeleton together with well-defined periodical alignment has endowed COFs with enormous potential in lithium batteries. In this review, we initially illustrated the design principle of COFs for the application in lithium batteries. Furthermore, we made a comprehensive summary of the fast-developing COFs field in terms of lithium batteries, including lithium ion and lithium sulfur batteries. Finally, we discussed the remaining challenges and perspectives in this area and also proposed several possible future directions of development for lithium batteries. It is expected that this short review would contribute to the development of COFs materials in energy-related applications.

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are a class of crystalline porous polymer that allows the atomically precise integration of organic units into extended structures with periodic skeletons and ordered nanopores. One important feature of COFs is that they are designable; that is, the geometry and dimensions of the building blocks can be controlled to direct the topological evolution of structural periodicity. The diversity of building blocks and covalent linkage topology schemes make COFs an emerging materials platform for structural control and functional design. Indeed, COF architectures offer confined molecular spaces for the interplay of photons, excitons, electrons, holes, ions and guest molecules, thereby exhibiting unique properties and functions. In this Review, we summarize the major progress in the field of COFs and recent achievements in developing new design principles and synthetic strategies. We highlight cutting-edge functional designs and identify fundamental issues that need to be addressed in conjunction with future research directions from chemistry, physics and materials perspectives.

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks(COFs)are crystalline porous polymers constructed by the covalent linkage of building blocks in a predictable pattern.In 2005,Yaghi and co-workers addressed the topological design principles of COFs and synthesized the first example with hexagonal pore channels and layer-by-layer stacking structures.The advent and development of COFs over years have been providing a promising platform across scientific fields as well as opportunities of designing the state-of-art 2D architectures.Given the covalent linkages and organic components,both the chemical and thermal stability of COFs are improved significantly,and the mass density is much lower than the well-known metal-organic frameworks.Different from the amorphous porous organic materials,the long-range ordered structure of COFs can be pre-designed and tailored to realize the specific topological structures and pore properties.In recent years,extensive attention has been gained on COFs' chemistry including building units,topology structures,reaction types,polymerization methods and functional strategies.T hese studies have laid the foundation for the extension of COFs' applications such as gas storage/separation, catalysis, chemosensing,light harvesting,proton conduction and energy storage/transduction.Therefore,COFs not only exhibit the application value of porous organic materials,but also show great potential to challenge the bottlenecks of the emerging energy and environmental issues.In this review,we summarize the milestones in design and synthesis of COFs as well as the major progress achieved in applications,and further address their prospects and challenges in the future development.

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs), materials constructed from organic building blocks joined by robust covalent bonds, have emerged as attractive materials in the context of electrochemical applications because of their high, intrinsic porosities and crystalline frameworks, as well as their ability to be tuned across two- and three-dimensions by the judicious selection of building blocks. Because of the recent and rapid development of this field, we have summarized COFs employed for electrochemical applications, such as batteries and capacitors, water splitting, solar cells, and sensors, with an emphasis on the structural design and resulting performance of the targeted electrochemical system. Overall, we anticipate this review will stimulate the design and synthesis of the next generation of COFs for use in electrochemical applications and beyond.

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are a class of porous crystalline materials consisting of organic units connected through covalent bonds. Due to their low density, high surface area and high thermal stability, COFs have found interesting applications in many fields, including molecular adsorption and separation, sensing, catalysis and optoelectronics devices. In particular, two-dimensional (2D) COFs have attracted increasing attention in energy fields. In this perspective, the applications of 2D COFs in energy storage (lithium ion batteries, lithium-sulfur batteries, supercapacitor and fuel cells) and energy conversion (water splitting and reduction of carbon dioxide) are reviewed. In addition, we will also discuss the remaining challenging issues.

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) represent an exciting new type of porous organic materials, which are ingeniously constructed with organic building units via strong covalent bonds. The well-defined crystalline porous structures together with tailored functionalities have offered the COF materials superior potential in diverse applications, such as gas storage, adsorption, optoelectricity, and catalysis. Since the seminal work of Yaghi and co-workers in 2005, the rapid development in this research area has attracted intensive interest from researchers with diverse expertise. This critical review describes the state-of-the-art development in the design, synthesis, characterisation, and application of the crystalline porous COF materials. Our own opinions on further development of the COF materials are also presented for discussion (155 references).

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are burgeoning crystalline porous materials that are constituted with organic building units and covalent bonds. The pre-designable porous structures make a platform for solving energy and environmental problems. This article systematically presents the basic design principle of COFs and introduces the applications in energy and environment fields, for instance, gas storage, energy storage, photoconduction, and catalysis. We also discussed the gas storage conditions and the strategies to improve the hydrogen storage. Finally, we proposed a scheme for improving the storage capacity of lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries with COFs and the use of COFs to remove Hg in water, and as a catalyst to make rational use of solar energy.

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks are a class of extended crystalline organic materials that possess unique architectures with high surface areas and tuneable pore sizes. Since the first discovery of the topological frameworks in 2005, COFs have been applied as promising materials in diverse areas such as separation and purification, sensing or catalysis. Considering the need for renewable and clean energy production, many research efforts have recently focused on the application of porous materials for electrochemical energy storage and conversion. In this respect, considerable efforts have been devoted to the design and synthesis of COF-based materials for electrochemical applications, including electrodes and membranes for fuel cells, supercapacitors and batteries. This review article highlights the design principles and strategies for the synthesis of COFs with a special focus on their potential for electrochemical applications. Recently suggested hybrid COF materials or COFs with hierarchical porosity will be discussed, which can alleviate the most challenging drawback of COFs for these applications. Finally, the major challenges and future trends of COF materials in electrochemical applications are outlined.

Abstract:Ionic covalent organic frameworks (iCOFs), a subset of burgeoning COFs materials featuring both charged sites and ordered frameworks, have been increasingly recognized due to their unique properties and unrivaled potential in a plethora of energy functionalities. However, current progress on the applications of iCOFs for various energy aspects have not been comprehensively overviewed. Facing the prosperous growth of iCOF fields, the review exploring the seminal advanced electro-, photo-, and thermo- energy functionalities of iCOFs are presented here. Beginning with a reflection on the classification and building units of iCOFs, the construction principles employed for iCOFs are elucidated. Then the state-of-the-art advancements of iCOFs in electricity generation and storage devices are summarized. And meanwhile, the functionalities in photo-induced energy conversion as well as thermal energy management systems are coordinately focused. Further, the concise discussions regarding to the intricate relationship between the ionic structure and multifarious functions within iCOFs are delved. Finally, a comprehensive analysis on both opportunities available to iCOFs and challenges they face currently are conducted. The insights from this review pave the way for the fabrication of next-generation high-performance iCOFs and open new perspectives for their extensive industrial applications.

Abstract:As a subclass of porous framework materials, covalent organic frameworks (COFs) feature permanent porosity, long-range order, and rigid backbones, and offer an important material platform for addressing the issues of global energy and environmental crisis. Along with the rapid development of physics, chemistry, materials science, engineering, as well as their collaboration, this research area has witnessed a dramatic growth proceeding to wide applications including gas storage and separations, energy storage and conversion devices, drug delivery, chemical sensing, and photo/electrocatalysis. Specially, structural designability, large surface area, high porosity, and superior chemical stability make COFs ideal candidates for photocatalytic systems, and great achievement and progress have been made up to now. In this Review, the key advancements made in COF-based photocatalysis are thoroughly presented. We first highlight the design principles and strategies for COFs synthesis with a special focus on their potential for photocatalysis. Following this, various photocatalytic applications of COFs are presented, covering the topics of photocatalytic hydrogen evolution, photocatalytic oxygen evolution, carbon photocatalytic dioxide reduction, photocatalytic organic transformation, and other photocatalytic reactions. Finally, the key challenges to be addressed and future avenues to be pursued are outlined, aiming to yield novel insights and contribute to game-changing innovations in this emerging area.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and covalent-organic frameworks (COFs) are constituting two new classes of highly crystalline advanced permeable materials that have purchased significant courtesy due to their incredible characteristic such as large surface area, highly ordered pores/channels, and controllable crystalline structure. However, the main hurdles to their various applications in photocatalytic activity and novel energy storage/conversion devices are their low structural stability and electrical conductivities. Therefore, substantial research has been directed to maximize their advantages and mitigate the shortcomings of these fascinating materials. In this review article, we first introduced the background and brief timeline of COF/MOF development and notable milestones followed by a systematic overview of the different synthetic procedures and recent achievements and milestones of their applications in CO2 reduction, hydrogen production, lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), and supercapacitors (SCs). Finally, the challenges and future perspectives on further developing high-performance COF/MOF materials for photocatalysis and electrochemical energy storage application are discussed.

Abstract:Covalent Organic Frameworks (COFs) are porous crystalline polymers put together by linking light elements such as Carbon, Boron, Oxygen and Silicon through strong covalent bonds that are positioned in 2D or 3D topology. Porous organic materials, exhibit unique features and therefore, they can potentially be used in diverse applications such as catalyst, molecular sensing, drug delivery, gas storage, etc. The first reports on metal organic frameworks (MOFs) and covalent organic frameworks (COFs) were published by Yaghi and co-workers in 2005 and after that, these structures have attracted intensive interest from researchers due to their unique properties such as high surface area, low density, high thermal and chemical stability, uniformity and high porosity, and thousands of new frameworks have since been synthesized. This review describes the latest developments in the design, synthesis, and application of COFs in gas storage, catalyst, adsorption, enrichment and purification of small molecules, optoelectricity, molecular sensing, drug delivery, conductive membrane, novel coatings and energy storage. Also we really hope that this review will arouse more scholars' attention to the industrialization of COFs.

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are an emerging class of functional nanostructures with intriguing properties, due to their unprecedented combination of high crystallinity, tunable pore size, large surface area, and unique molecular architecture. The range of properties characterized in COFs has rapidly expanded to include those of interest for numerous applications ranging from energy to environment. Here, a background overview is provided, consisting of a brief introduction of porous materials and the design feature of COFs. Then, recent advancements of COFs as a designer platform for a plethora of applications are emphasized together with discussions about the strategies and principles involved. Abstract:Abstract As an emerging class of crystalline organic material, covalent organic frameworks (COFs) possess uniform porosity, versatile functionality, and precise control over designated structures. Aside from the favorable charge and mass transport pathways offered by the porous framework, COFs can also exhibit designed reversible redox activity. Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have historically been of interest to researchers in different areas due to their distinctive characteristics, including well-ordered pores, large specific surface area, and structural tunability. In the past few years, as COF synthesis techniques developed, COF-based composites fabricated by integrating COFs and other functional materials including various kinds of metal or metal oxide nanoparticles, ionic liquids, metal-organic frameworks, silica, polymers, enzymes and carbon nanomaterials have emerged as a novel kind of porous hybrid material. Herein, we first provide a thorough summary of advanced strategies for preparing COF-based composites; then, the emerging applications of COF-based composites in diverse fields due to their synergistic effects are systematically highlighted, including analytical chemistry (sensing, extraction, membrane separation, and chromatographic separation) and catalysis. Finally, the current challenges associated with future perspectives of COF-based composites are also briefly discussed to inspire the advancement of more COF-based composites with excellent properties.

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) with high specific porosity, easy functionalization, and tailored structure are an emerging class of crystalline porous polymers that have been extensively exploited as ideal materials in various fields. Among, sp2-carbon linked COFs with high chemical stability, porous backbone, and unique -electron conjugated architectures structure have raised widespread attention. Specifically, the porous channels of olefin-linked COFs could be packed with active sites for catalysis and guest molecules, while π-π stacking interactions and conjugation systems pave the way for electron transfer. In recent years, many efforts have been devoted to the development of sp2-carbon linked COFs for applications in catalysis, energy storage, gas adsorption, and separation. In this review, we highlight the design principles, synthesis strategies, and impactful applications of olefin-linked COFs. We are looking forward to this review to deepen the understanding of the synthesis of olefin-linked COFs and motivate the further development of these novel conjugated organic materials with distinctive physicochemical properties, as well as their applications in a variety of fields.

Abstract:Within the past few decades, metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) and covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have attracted much attention due to their porous structure, periodicity, and tunability; however, the lack of good stability of MOFs limits its further application, while COFs are limited by the lack of metal active sites. Recently, a new kind of organic frameworks appeared, which used metal clusters of MOFs as secondary building units (SBUs) and synthesized covalent-metal–organic frameworks (C-MOFs) through the dynamic covalent bonding linkage of COFs. C-MOFs combine the advantages of both MOFs and COFs, and also possess the adjustable and predictable periodic porous structure, which has good stability at the and also the presence of metal active sites, which is a novel material. In this review, we provide an overview of the research advances in the synthesis strategies of C-MOFs, as well as the progress of their applications in catalysis, gas storage, and energy storage. In addition, the article ends with a look at the future direction of C-MOFs.

Abstract:In order to move towards sustainable development, the discovery of energy-efficient and environmentally friendly materials has become increasingly imperative. Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) as emerging designable crystalline porous materials have captured increasing attention for a wide array of clean-energy and environmental applications, attributed to their attractive advantages of low density, high surface area, adjustable and periodic pores, and functional skeletons. This review attempts to highlight the key advancements made in the green synthesis of COFs, processing of COFs, energy and environment-related applications, including gas storage, water treatment, the separation of gas mixture and organic molecules, catalysis, supercapacitors, fuel cell, and rechargeable batteries. Finally, a perspective regarding the remaining challenges and future directions on the synthesis and promising application for green chemical engineering of COFs has also been presented based on current achievements.

Herein, we present a systematic and concise overview of the recent advances in 2D COFs related to the electrochemical energy field, including supercapacitors, fuel cells, rechargeable lithium batteries, lithium-sulfur batteries, and other metal-ion batteries. Abstract:As a newly emerging class of porous materials, covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have attracted much attention due to their intriguing structural merits (e.g., total organic backbone, tunable porosity and predictable structure). However, the insoluble and unprocessable features of bulk COF powder limit their applications. To overcome these limitations, considerable efforts have been devoted to exploring the fabrication of COF thin films with controllable architectures, which open the door for their novel applications. In this critical review, we aim to provide the recent advances in the fabrication of COF thin films not only supported on substrates but also as free-standing nanosheets via both bottom-up and top-down strategies. The bottom-up strategy involves solvothermal synthesis, interfacial polymerization, room temperature vapor-assisted conversion, and synthesis under continuous flow conditions; whereas, the top-down strategy involves solvent-assisted exfoliation, self-exfoliation, mechanical delamination, and chemical exfoliation. In addition, the applications of COF thin films including energy storage, semiconductor devices, membrane-separation, sensors, and drug delivery are summarized. Finally, to accelerate further research, a personal perspective covering their synthetic strategies, mechanisms and applications is presented.
