Abstract:Fabrication of complex molecular films of organic materials is one of the most important issues in modern nanoscience and nanotechnology. Soft materials with flexible properties have been given much attention and can be obtained through bottom up processing from functional molecules, where self-assembly based on supramolecular chemistry and designed assembly have become crucial processes and technologies. In this short communication, we report the successful incorporation of cationic laser dye Rhodamine 6G abbreviated as R6G into the pre-assembled polyelectrolyte/Surfactant complex film onto quartz substrate by electrostatic adsorption technique. Poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH) was used as polycation and Sodium dodecyl sulphate(SDS) was used as anionic surfactant. UV-Vis absorption spectroscopic characterization reveals the formation of only H-type aggregates of R6G in their aqueous solution and both H and J-type aggregates in PAH/SDS/R6G complex LbL films as well as the kinetics of adsorption of R6G onto the complex films. The ratio of the absorbance intensity of two aggregated bands in PAH/SDS/R6G complex films is merely independent of the concentration range of the SDS solution used to fabricate PAH/SDS complex self-assembled films. Atomic Force Microscopy reveals the formation of R6G aggregates in PAH/SDS/R6G complex films.

Abstract:In this communication we investigate two dyes N,N' -dioctadecyl thiacyanine perchlorate (NK) and octadecyl rhodamine B chloride (RhB) in Langmuir and Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films with or with out a synthetic clay laponite. Observed changes in isotherms of RhB in absence and presence of nano-clay platelets indicate the incorporation of clay platelets onto RhB-clay hybrid films. AFM image confirms the incorporation of clay in hybrid films. FRET was observed in clay dispersion and LB films with and without clay. Efficiency of energy transfer was maximum in LB films with clay.

Abstract:Here, we report the mixing behaviour of diacetylene monomer 10, 12-tricosadiynoic acid (TCDA) and rhodamine-800 (Rh8) using Langmuir–Blodgett (LB) technique. The presence of Rh8 affected the structures, phase behaviour as well as colorimetric properties of TCDA in the mixed films at air–water interface and onto solid support. The mixed LB films having TCDA molefraction ≥ 0.5 leads to multilayer formation, whereas multilayer formation was hardly observed for the films containing TCDA molefraction less than 0.5. It was observed that polymerization as well as phase change (blue to red) was possible only for multilayered films. Brewster angle microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and fluorescence inverted microscopy studies confirmed the formation of definite structures in the polymerized TCDA/Rh8 mixed films at air–water interface and onto solid support. Structure of TCDA polymer strands was largely influenced by the presence of Rh8 in the mixed films. Interestingly, energy transfer occurred from TCDA in red phase to Rh8 in the mixed films with TCDA molefraction greater than 0.4. Maximum energy transfer efficiency was found to be 47.3% for the mixed LB film with TCDA molefraction 0.9.

Spectral Characteristics of Water-Soluble Rhodamine Derivatives for Laser-Induced Fluorescence

Abstract:We present a comprehensive fluorescence characterization of seven water-soluble rhodamine derivatives for applications in laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) techniques. Absorption and emission spectra for these dyes are presented over the visible spectrum of wavelengths (400 to 700 nm). Their fluorescence properties were also investigated as a function of temperature for LIF thermometry applications. Rhodamine 110 depicted the least fluorescence emission sensitivity to temperature at -0.11%/°C, while rhodamine B depicted the most with a -1.55%/°C. We found that the absorption spectra of these molecules are independent of temperature, supporting the notion that the temperature sensitivity of their emission only comes from changes in quantum yield with temperature. Conversely, these rhodamine fluorophores showed no change in emission intensities with pH variations and are, therefore, not suitable tracers for pH measurements. Similarly, fluorescent lifetime, which is also a property sensitive to local environmental changes in temperature, pH, and ion concentration, measurements were conducted for these fluorophores. It was found that rhodamine B and kiton red 620 have shorter fluorescence timescales compared to those of the other five rhodamine dyes, making them least suitable for applications where temporal changes in emission are monitored. Lastly, we conducted experiments to assess the physicochemical absorption characteristics of these dyes' molecules into polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), the most common material for microfluidic devices. Rhodamine B showed the highest diffusion into PDMS substrates as compared to the other derivative dyes.
The effect of the thickness on structural, optical limiting, and dielectric properties of hybrid coatings rhodamine B dye films on an epoxy polymeric substrate for display applications

Abstract:Abstract Various thickness of Rhodamine B (RhB) laser dye was deposited on epoxy polymeric as a new dielectric organic substrate by spin coating method for the first time. This study focused on the newly considered RhB dye on an epoxy substrate for wide-scale applications. The thickness effect on structural, optical, and dielectric properties of the hybrid coating films was performed. The XRD patterns of the films indicated a large hump amorphous design and lack of Bragg peak intensity associated with the RhB laser dye, due to amorphous film concentration. From UV-Visible spectroscopy, the optical absorption edge shifts to the higher wavelengths direction (redshift) with the variation in RhB dye thicknesses. It was found that the energy band gap decreased when the RhB dye film thickness changed. The refractive index is an important parameter influencing the optical component design. Their values vary according to each relationship that extremely useful the films in optical devices. Laser power attenuation sensitivity of pure epoxy polymeric substrate and its coating films shows that under reducing the thicknesses of RhB dye, the laser power intensity effect increases. Several dielectric parameters are extracted from the series and parallel capacitance measurements. The present results offer new material films for luminescent energy solar concentrator applications.

Abstract:The data presented in this manuscript presents the characterisation spectra of three hyperbranched polymers as discussed in the paper “Folic Acid and Rhodamine Labelled pH Responsive Hyperbranched Polymers: synthesis, characterisation and cell uptake studies” [1]. Characterisation of polymers was performed via 1H Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (1H NMR) and Size Exclusion Chromatography (SEC). pH responsive characteristics were observed via Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS). The data for characterisation of folate conjugated hyperbranched polymer is presented as 1H NMR, Ultra Violet Visible (UV-VIS) spectra and DLS measurements. Further data is presented detailing the experiments for the synthesis of monomers 2-propyl acrylic acid (PAA) and disulfide diacrylate (DSDA), with the full synthesis of folic acid-poly (ethylene glycol) (PEG) linker, rhodamine B ethylenediamine linker and bioconjugation reactions also detailed.
Ultrasonic dyeing of polylatic acid blended fabric

Abstract:Dyeing behaviors of polylatic acid blended fabric assisted with ultrasonic wave were studied,the results were compared with those of conventional dyeing.Effects of ultrasonic wave on dye liquor and fabric were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy(SEM),X-ray diffraction(XRD)and laser particle size analyzer.The results showed that ultrasonic treatment could break the micelles of disperse dyes,therefore,dye uptake and K/S value could be increased.After ultrasonic treatment,the fabric had no obvious etching on surface nor changes in α crystalline form,and only a little decrease in strength and intensity of diffraction.

Abstract:This communication reports the formation and characterization of self assembled films of a low molecular weight anionic dye amaranth and polycation Poly (allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH) by electrostatic alternating Layer-by-Layer (LBL) adsorption. It was observed that there was almost no material loss occurred during adsorption process. The UV-Vis absorption and fluorescence spectra of amaranth solution reveal that with the increase in amaranth concentration in solution, the aggregated species starts to dominate over the monomeric species. New aggregated band at 600 nm was observed in amaranth-PAH mixture solution absorption spectrum. A new broad low intense band at the longer wavelength region, in the amaranth-PAH mixture solution fluorescence spectrum was observed due to the closer association of amaranth molecule while tagged into the polymer backbone of PAH and consequent formation of aggregates. The broad band system in the 650-750 nm region in the fluorescence spectra of different layered LBL films changes in intensity distribution among various bands within itself, with changing layer number and at 10 bilayer LBL films the longer wavelength band at 710 nm becomes prominent. Existence of dimeric or higher order n-meric species in the LBL films was confirmed by excitation spectroscopic studies. Almost 45 minute was required to complete the interaction between amaranth and PAH molecules in the 1-bilayer LBL film.

Abstract:We report an investigation on the surface behaviors, including diffusion, desorption and fluorescence blinking, of rhodamine-labeled phospholipid molecules at single-molecule level by confocal fluorescence microscopy. It was found that besides an average force field on the hydrophilic glass surface there exist special sites which strongly adsorb rhodamine-labeled phospholipid molecules. The desorption rate of the strongly adsorbed molecules is determined to be (5.9 ± 0.2) s-1. The diffusion coefficient of the molecules on the surface, (3.3 ±0.1) × 10-8 cm2·s-1, is much smaller than that in aqueous solution, (2.3 ±0.1) × 10-6 cm2·s-1, but is in the same order as that in a fluid phospholipid membrane. Fluorescence blinking was observed in some of the strongly adsorbed molecules, which may be attributed to reversible quantum jumps to dark states induced by the strong interaction between the molecule and adsorption sites.

Abstract:In this work, the aggregation behaviour of RhB has been studied with the change in the concentration of the RhB dye in water, ethanol and propanol using absorption and laser induced fluorescence spectroscopy. The dimer and monomer fluorescence emissions were observed simultaneously in all the solvents. The monomer to dimer fluorescence intensity ratio has been calculated and found that at a certain concentration of RhB the magnitude of the ratio is different in different solvents. The ratio becomes equivalent to one for 1.5 gm per l, 3 gm per l and 4.2 gm per l, concentration of RhB in water, ethanol and propanol respectively. This concentration of RhB at which the monomer to dimer ratio becomes unity is proposed as critical concentration. Above this critical concentration, the dimeric fluorescence dominates and below which the monomeric fluorescence dominates. Moreover, in the solvent for which the magnitude of critical concentration is less the fluorophore molecule aggregates more easily and vice versa. So, water is found to be the most suitable solvent for RhB molecules for self-aggregation than ethanol and propanol but with less dimeric quantum yield. It is also observed that the critical concentration varies inversely with the dielectric constant of the solvents. Altogether, it can be said that the proposed ratio and critical concentration quantify the aggregation process of the fluorophore in the solvent. Hence, the critical concentration value of the fluorophore could be assumed as the characteristic parameter to study the aggregation behaviour of the fluorophore in solvents. The described method has the merit of use in the study of lasing ability and the wavelength tunability of the dye laser gain media as well as in the heavy metal sensing technology in water. This method may also be extended for other fluorophores and solvents.

Abstract:The present work aimed to highlight an efficient, readily accessible, and cost-effective adsorbent derived from Dalbergia sissoo (DS) leaf powder for removing the environmentally hazardous dye "alizarin red S" (ARS) from hydrous medium. A variant of the adsorbent is activated via sulfuric acid and composited with magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (DSMNC). Both adsorbents are thoroughly characterized using techniques such as Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, point of zero charge, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy, which show that they have a porous structure rich in active sites. Different adsorption conditions are optimized with the maximum removal efficiency of 76.63% for DS and 97.89% for DSMNC. The study was highlighted via the application of various adsorption isotherms, including Freundlich, Langmuir, Temkin, and Dubinin–Radushkevich, to adsorption data. Pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order, and intra-particle diffusion models were utilized to investigate the kinetics and mechanism of adsorption. The Freundlich model and pseudo-second-order kinetics exhibited the best fit, suggesting a combination of physical interactions, as confirmed by the D–R and Temkin models. The dominant adsorbate–adsorbent interactive interactions responsible for ARS removal were hydrogen bonding, dispersion forces, and noncovalent aromatic ring adsorbent pi-interactions. Thermodynamic parameters extracted from adsorption data indicated that the removal of the mutagenic dye "ARS" was exothermic and spontaneous on both DS and DSMNC, with DSMNC exhibiting higher removal efficiency.

Abstract:This study is aimed to shed light on the electronic absorption and emission spectra of DBDMA (2-(1-(difluoroboraneyl)-1,2-dihydroquinolin-2-yl)-2-(1-methylquinoxalin-2-ylidene) acetonitrile) in different solvents. Both types of spectra were obtained theoretically and produced experimentally in different solvents. The photostability of dye was tested, and its energy transfer behavior in the presence of oxygen and hydrated copper sulfate quenchers was investigated. We also gave a qualitative estimation of the effect of acidic media on the absorption and emission spectra. There is good compatibility between the calculated and measured values of many photophysical parameters. DBDMA has a low chemical quantum yield in solvents of different polarities, and the fluorescence quantum yield is high enough, which confirms, together with the low values of the excited state lifetime, its efficiency as laser emitting dye in the range of wavelength emission maxima. The rigidity of the DBDMA molecule is the main reason for the photochemical stability and the absence of a considerable shift as a result of the change in the polarity of the solvents. Geometries of ground and excited states were optimized using the density functional theory (DFT) and the time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT), respectively. Upon using the TD-DFT method, the UV-Vis absorption and emission spectra of the DBDMA molecule in different solvents were illustrated. A slight change is observed in the position of the maximum emission and absorption wavelength with the change of the solvent due to the rigidity of the compound. There was no apparent effect of quenching by oxygen. Besides, no intersystem crossing (ISC) was observed for the excited state of the DBDMA as a result of aeration of a solution with O2 for 20 min, which was an explanation of the stability of peak emission intensity of dye after exposure to oxygen gas. The energy transfer rate constant has been calculated as well.

Abstract:Rhodamine 6G – polymethylmethacrylate/polycarbonate (Rh6G–PMMA/PC) were prepared by a casting method at room temperature with diverse volume ratios of Rh6G dye solution (5, 10, 15, 20 and 25) ml. The as-prepared films were categorised via UV–Vis spectrophotometer, and the optical properties were investigated in the wavelength range of (200-800) nm. The absorption peaks for pure PMMA/PC film were affected by inserting Rh6G dye solution, the wavelength of absorption peak of pure PMMA/PC film is at 300 nm and 340 nm while there are different behaveior at different concentration of RG6 after mixing with PMMA/PC films; there are red shift for concentrations (10 and 25 ml) of RG6 after mixing with PMMA/PC films by appear another peaks at 530 nm and 535 nm respectively. In addition, there is a blue shift for concentrations (15 and 20 ml) of RG6 after mixing with PMMA/PC films, as evidenced by the appearance of new peaks at wavelength 265 nm. Furthermore, new peaks appeared and were absorbed while the energy band gap was influenced, with values ranging from 4.3 eV for pure PMMA/PC film to 4.18 eV for mixtures 10 and 25 ml concentration of Rh6G/ PMMA/PC belonging to the red shift to 4.9 eV and 4.85 eV for mixtures 15 and 20 ml concentration of Rh6G/ PMMA/PC belonging to the blue shift.

Characterization of Rhodamine Self-Assembled Films Using Desorption Electrospray Ionization Mass Spectrometry

Abstract:Growth process information and molecular structure identification are very important for characterization of self-assembled films. Here, we explore the possible application of desorption electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (DESI-MS) that provides the assembled information of rhodamine B (Rh B) and rhodamine 123 (Rh 123) films. With the help of lab-made DESI source, two characteristic ions [Rh B] + and [Rh 123] + are observed directly in the open environment. To evaluate the reliability of this technique, a comparative study of ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectroscopy and our method is carried out, and the result shows good correlation. According to the signal intensity of characteristic ions, the layer-by-layer adsorption process of dyes can be monitored, and the thicknesses of multilayer films can also be comparatively determined. Combining the high sensitivity, selectivity, and speed of mass spectrometry, the selective adsorption of similar structure molecules under different pH is recognized easily from extracted ion chronograms. The variation trend of dyes signalling intensity with concentration of polyelectrolyte is studied as well, which reflects the effect of surface charge on dyes deposition. Additionally, the desorption area, surface morphology, and thicknesses of multilayer films are investigated using fluorescence microscope, scanning electron microscope (SEM), and atomic force microscopy (AFM), respectively. Because the desorption area was approximately as small as 2 mm 2 , the distribution situation of organic dyes in an arbitrary position could be gained rapidly, which means DESI-MS has advantages on in situ analysis. Laser-driven acoustic desorption of organic molecules from back-irradiated solid foils

Abstract:Laser-induced acoustic desorption (LIAD) from thin metal foils is a promising technique for gentle and efficient volatilization of intact organic molecules from surfaces of solid substrates. Using the single-photon ionization method combined with time-of-flight mass spectrometry, we have examined the neutral component of the desorbed flux in LIAD and compared it to that from direct laser desorption. These basic studies of LIAD, conducted for molecules of various organic dyes (rhodamine B, fluorescein, anthracene, coumarin, BBQ), have demonstrated detection of intact parent molecules of the analyte even at its surface concentrations corresponding to a submonolayer coating. In some cases (rhodamine B, fluorescein, BBQ), the parent molecular ion peak was accompanied by a few fragmentation peaks of comparable intensity, whereas for others, only peaks corresponding to intact parent molecules were detected. At all measured desorbing laser intensities (from 100 to 500 MW/cm2), the total amount of desorbed parent molecules depended exponentially on the laser intensity. Translational velocities of the desorbed intact molecules, determined for the first time in this work, were of the order of hundreds of meters per second, less than what has been observed in our experiments for direct laser desorption, but substantially greater than the possible perpendicular velocity of the substrate foil surface due to laser-generated acoustic waves. Moreover, these velocities did not depend on the desorbing laser intensity, which implies the presence of a more sophisticated mechanism of energy transfer than direct mechanical or thermal coupling between the laser pulse and the adsorbed molecules. Also, the total flux of desorbed intact molecules as a function of the total number of desorbing laser pulses, striking the same point on the target, decayed following a power law rather than an exponential function, as would have been predicted by the shake-off model. To summarize, the results of our experiments indicate that the LIAD phenomenon cannot be described in terms of simple mechanical shake-off or direct laser desorption. Rather, they suggest that multistep energy-transfer processes are involved. Two possible (and not mutually exclusive) qualitative mechanisms of LIAD that are based on formation of nonequilibrium energy states in the adsorbate-substrate system are proposed and discussed.
Langmuir-Blodgett Monolayers of Cationic Dyes in the Presence and Absence of Clay Mineral Layers: N,N'-Dioctadecyl Thiacyanine, Octadecyl Rhodamine B and Laponite

Abstract:Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films of N,N'-dioctadecyl thiacyanine perchlorate (NK) and octadecyl rhodamine B chloride (RhB18) and their mixtures in the presence and absence of clay mineral layers were investigated by recording surface pressure - area isotherms and by UV-Vis and fluorescence spectroscopies. The isotherms of NK, RhB18 and their mixtures are characteristic for liquid expanded state behaviour with repulsive interactions between the two cationic dyes. In the presence of laponite the isotherms show liquid expanded and condensed state behaviour. In laponite dispersions and in monolayers, NK has a strong tendency to aggregate with formation of H- and J- aggregates. The absorption and fluorescence maxima of the monomers in the films are at 435 nm and at 480 nm; H-dimer have an absorption maximum around 410 nm and do not fluoresce. J-dimers are present in all the films with absorption maximum at 461 nm and fluorescence at 463 nm. RhB18 is mainly present as monomers in the LB films with an absorption maximum at 576 nm and fluorescence at 595 nm. Fluorescence resonance energy transfer from NK to RhB18 has been observed in clay dispersions and in films with and without laponite. The optimum condition for NK RhB18 fluorescence energy transfer in the films is 90 mol% NK + 10 mol% RhB18.

Abstract:Fluorescent inks based on carbon quantum dots (CQDs) find versatile applications in both security and biotechnology sectors. They serve as a potent tool for anti-counterfeiting applications such as military documents, banknotes, valuable certificates, and checks. In this study, we embarked on the synthesis of CQDs through a one-step procedure employing citric acid, ethylene diamine, and aniline, in varying ratios, utilizing three distinct synthesis methods including hydrothermal, microwave-assisted, and simple heating techniques. Comprehensive characterization techniques, such as UV–Visible spectroscopy, Photoluminescence spectroscopy (PL), Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS), Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM), and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), were employed to investigate the physicochemical properties of the synthesized carbon quantum dots. Among the various CQD samples synthesized in this study, the best one was selected as a functional dye for the formulation of fluorescent ink. The ink was subsequently applied to paper using inkjet printing techniques. To delve further into the interaction between the ink and paper substrate, water contact angle measurements were performed on both printed areas and unprinted paper. Notably, the results revealed a decrease in contact angle after printing, indicating enhanced ink penetration into the porous structure of the paper.

Abstract:With a rapid increase in industrial growth around the world, the demand for an entirely novel category of nanoparticles and technologies for wastewater treatment has become a key concern for environmental protection. Recently, hybrids of layered double hydroxides (LDH), particularly those containing LDH, have gained attention as potential nanoscale adsorbents for water treatment. Recent research has shown that LDH-containing composites are interesting versatile materials with the ability to be used in energy storage, photocatalysis, nanocomposites, and water treatment. In the current work, LDH-containing composites were utilized as adsorbents for the purpose of purifying water. The adsorbents investigated are Zn-Co-Fe/LDH/Chitosan-in situ sample preparation (LDH/CS1) and Zn-Co-Fe/LDH/Chitosan-ex situ sample preparation (LDH/CS2). Furthermore, LDH/CS1 and LDH/CS2 were investigated for wastewater treatment from methyl orange dye (MO) with various adsorption conditions. When the initial MO concentration was 20 mg/L and the amount of adsorbent was 0.1 g, the removal efficiency reached 72.8 and 91.7% for LDH/CS1 and LDH/CS2, respectively. The MO's maximum adsorption capabilities are 160.78 and 165.89 mg/g for LDH/CS1 and LDH/CS2, respectively, which is much greater than that of comparable commercial adsorbents. MO adsorption onto LDH/CS1 and LDH/CS2 was best characterized by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The equilibrium adsorption data was followed by the Freundlich and Langmuir models. The adsorption is favorable as evidenced by the equilibrium parameter RL values for MO adsorption onto LDH/CS1 and LDH/CS2, which were 0.227 and 0.144, respectively. Using the free volume distribution method and the positron annihilation lifetime technique, the nanostructure of the materials was examined.

Abstract:Infrared laser induced photopolymerization of two multifunctional acrylate monomers was studied. Focus was on the influences of the irradiation parameters, such as the irradiation time, irradiation intensity, photoinitiator content and sample thickness, on the double bond conversion. The adopted novel cationic cyanine dye-borate complex (CBC) efficiently initiated the polymerization of acrylate monomers under irradiation of 796nm infrared laser.

Abstract:In this work, a hyperbranched diazonium salt (HB-DAS), prepared through azo-coupling reaction of an AB2 monomer (N, N-bis[2-(4-aminobenzoyloxy)ethyl]aniline), was used to prepare self-assembled multilayers and ultrathin films. Multilayer films were fabricated by dipping substrates in HB-DAS and other polyelectrolyte solutions alternately in a layer-by-layer (LBL) manner. It was somewhat surprising to observe that HB-DAS forms multilayer films with either a polyanion (poly(styrenesulfonate sodium salt), PSS) or a polycation (poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride), PDAC) through alternate deposition in the solutions. Ultrathin films were formed in a sequential growth manner by dipping the substrates in the HB-DAS solution, washing with deionized water and drying repeatedly. In all the processes, the absorbance and thickness of the thin films linearly increase as the number of the dipping cycle increases. HB-DAS/PSS multilayer possesses an obviously larger bilayer thickness and lower density compared with the other two counterparts. The drying step after each deposition is necessary for the HB-DAS ultrathin film growth through the repeated dip-coating of HB-DAS. The multilayer and ultrathin films prepared by the above methods all show high resistance to erosion by organic solvents. The multilayers and ultrathin films exhibit photoinduced dichroism upon the irradiation of a polarized Ar+ laser beam.
