Abstract:Recent trends of interferometric wavefront sensing tend to focus on high precision, anti-vibration, compact, along with much more involved of electric and computer technology. And the optical principles employed not only limit to interference but also include diffraction, scattering, polarization, etc. In this paper, some selected examples basing on the research works in our group will be given to illustrate the trends mentioned above. To achieve extra high accuracy, phase-shifting point diffraction interferometry (PS-PDI) is believed to be a good candidate as it employs a nearly perfect point diffraction spherical wavefront as the reference and also takes advantage of the high precision of phase-shifting algorithms. Cyclic radial shearing interferometry (C-RSI) successively demonstrate the anti-vibration characteristic and can diagnose transient wavefront with only one single shot by employing a three-mirror common-path configuration and a synchronizing system. In contrast sharply with those early interferometers, interferometers with very compact configuration are more suitable to develop portable wavefront sensing instruments. Cross-grating lateral shearing interferometer (CG-LSI) is a very compact interferometer that adopts a cross-grating of millimeters to produce lateral shearing of the diffraction wave of the test wavefront. Be aware that, computer technique has been used a lot in all of the above interferometers but the non-null annual sub-aperture stitching interferometer (NASSI) for general aspheric surface testing mostly relies on the computer model of the physical interferometer setup and iterative ray-tracing optimization. The principles of the above mentioned interferometric wavefront sensing methods would be given in detail.

Abstract:The structured beams, which can manipulate arbitrary intensity and phase of electromagnetic rays, are significant in communication and sensing. The vortex electromagnetic wave carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM) exhibits the phase distribution of the helical wavefront, which can be viewed as a complete set of eigenmodes for electromagnetic waves. It provides a flexible beamforming method to achieve the azimuthal pattern diversity by the spatial superposition of multiple specific OAM modes. We have proposed a novel form of OAM wave with a two-dimensional structure called plane spiral OAM (PS-OAM), which is conducive to overlapping different modes. Based on this, the PS-OAM mode-group can be employed to modify the spatial beam structure and form structured electromagnetic beams. This kind of beam not only retains the inherent vorticity and orthogonality of the OAM waves but also tackles the difficulties in applications stemming from the singularity-caused dark zone and beam divergence of conventional OAM waves. In this paper, the construction and manipulation of the structured beams are investigated, and the properties are analyzed. The potential applications in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication, orthogonal multiplexing communication, and spatial field digital modulation (SFDM) communication are envisioned.

Abstract:The vortex electromagnetic (EM) wave carring orbital angular momentum (OAM) that exhibits the phase distribution of the helical wave front. It is expected to provide a new dimension of the physical parameters for the multiplexing and manipulating EM wave, and bring a new opportunity to the traditional EMs. However, there are many obstacles in the practical applications in radio domain. We excavate out that the vorticity and orthogonality are the two essential characteristics of the vortex waves. Based on this, it is proposed to use vortex wave mode group to modify spatial structure and form structured EM beams. This kind of beams not only retain the inherent vorticity and orthogonality of the traditional OAM wave, but also avoid the inherent defects in the applications of the traditional vortex EM waves. In this chapter, the construction and manipulation of the OAM-based structured radio beams are investigated. The vorticity and orthogonality of this kind of structured radio beams are analyzed. Several antennas for the structured radio beams are designed, and the potential applications in the radar detection and wireless communications are envisioned.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate optical ranging through underwater scattering using a range(z)-dependent angular rotation of a spatially structured beam. This beam is generated by combining two Bessel modes, and each Bessel mode carries a unique pair of orbital angular momentum (OAM) order ( li , i = 1 or 2) and longitudinal wavenumber ( kzli , i = 1 or 2). With two OAM orders l , a transverse petal-like intensity pattern is formed. With two different kz values, the relative phase between the two Bessel modes linearly changes along the longitudinal position, and thus, the angular rotation of the petal-like intensity pattern changes with the propagation distance. By measuring the angular rotation of the reflected beam profile, the distance information is retrieved. In our experiment, the scattering extinction coefficient ( γ ) is varied from 0 to 9.4 m−1 with ranging distance up to 0.4 m. The experimental results show that (a) the measurement error ( δz ) for our scenario is < 10 mm in clean water and (b) the petal-like intensity profile maintains its shape and δz <20 mm is achieved under scattering conditions.

Abstract:This Letter addresses a canonical imaging problem: how to estimate a small transverse displacement of a laser beam as precisely as possible. This problem is central to many applications, including scanning-probe atomic force microscopy, free-space optical communication, and optomechanics. Based on the geometry of the imaging system, the center wavelength of the laser probe, and the return-path propagation length, the authors identify the optimal spatial mode in which to excite a laser probe, when paired with the most sensitive receiver allowed by quantum estimation theory. Abstract:By simultaneous switching of transmitting and receiving beams in an electro-optical device, a novel laser ranging method is proposed. Continuous wave (CW) laser emitted by laser transmitter goes forward to the measured object, being reflected by the object, then goes back to the transmitter. Close to the transmitter, an electro-optical crystal is added into the round-trip light rays. High voltage curve with the steep enough edges is added on the crystal. Because of the high speed switch effect, the crystal operates on the transmitting and receiving beams at the same time. So light pulses, whose width T contains the required range information, are cut off and detected. In experiments the changing time of high voltage is about several nanoseconds realized by avalanche triode circuit. And based on double refraction and total internal double reflection effect in crystal, a single block LiNbO3 crystal with special shape is designed as the main device of this method. The feasibility of the new idea is proved by the results from oscillograph. So a brand-new way for the laser ranging is provided.

Abstract:Author(s): Hadiqa⋅ Abdugopur, Tan Le-Tao, Yu Tao, Xie Wen-Ke, Liu Jing, Shao Zheng-Zheng Vortex beam (VB) is a structured light beam with a helical wavefront and carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM). Compared with Gaussian beam, the VB possesses the rotational Doppler effect (RDE), which is anticipated to compensate for the shortcoming of traditional detection methods in the spin motion of the target object. However, in practical applications, the rotational speed measurement technology based on the VB is facing some challenges, such as weak echo signal intensity due to low vortex beam light power and OAM spectrum expansion caused by off-axis incidence of the vortex beam. These above-mentioned problems directly limit the accuracy and application range of rotational speed measurement. To expand the application range of detection scheme based on the VB, we study the measurement scheme of the target rotational speed based on the combined vortex beam (CVB), which is on the basis of the experimental device for rotational speed measurement with CVB generated by fibre laser arrays. Firstly, the OAM spectra of the off-axis incidence situation are simulated. According to the simulation results, we derive a general model of the peak distribution of echo signals under the off-axis incidence, and propose a rotational speed measurement scheme based on the frequency interval between adjacent spectral peaks. Secondly, we carry out the target rotational speed measurement experiment in off-axis incidence case, and the difference in frequency between two adjacent spectral peaks is obtained from the spectrum map of the echo signal to measure the rotational speed of the target object. The results show that the target rotational speed can be accurately measured regardless of the lateral displacement and angular deflection in the case of off-axis incidence, which confirms the validity of the universal model for rotational speed measurement. The rotational speed measurement scheme proposed in this study takes into consideration the off-axis incidence prevalent in practical application, thereby improving the applicability in the target object rotational speed measurement, and providing technical reference for remote sensing detection application based on the VB. Abstract:Vortex beams with orbital angular momentum play a crucial role in increasing the information capacity in optical communications. The magnitude of orbital angular momentum determines the ability of information encoding. In practice, a vortex beam can encounter random objects or turbulence during free-space propagation, resulting in information damage. Therefore, accurately measuring the orbital angular momentum of a randomly fluctuated and obstructed vortex beam is a considerable challenge. Herein, we propose a single-shot method for the phase retrieval of a randomly fluctuated and obstructed vortex beam by combining the phase-shift theorem and self-reference holography. Experimental results reveal that the sign and magnitude of the initial orbital angular momentum can be simultaneously determined based on their quantitative relation with the number of coherence singularities on the observation plane, thus addressing the effects of random occlusion and atmospheric turbulence. The proposed method considerably improved the accurate decoding of orbital angular momentum information in nonideal freespace optical communications.

Abstract:Optical vortex, typically characterized by a helical phase front, results in a possession of orbital angular momentum. In recent years, teleportation of the vortex mode using novel beams with peculiar features has gained great interest. Here, we experimentally demonstrate the propagation dynamics for a new class of the auto-focusing vortex circular Pearcey beam (VCPB), which is theoretically described by delivering the coaxial or off-axial spiral phases into the circular Pearcey beam (CPB), forming the crescent or bottle-like focal structure with self-rotation. Notably, such a hybrid beam with various types is experimentally obtained through a digital micromirror device (DMD) with the binary amplitude holography, and this DMD-based modulation scheme combined with controllable vortex modes enables dynamic switching among the VCPBs. We also measure the topological phase by interferometry and we explain the beam property on the basis of Poynting vector, showing a good agreement with the simulations. Further, the number, location and mode of embedded vortices could offer multiple dimensions of flexibility for target beam modulation, thus the experimentally controllable VCPBs will bring potential to high-speed optical communications and particle manipulations that require dynamic shaping.

Abstract:The novel concept of near-field velocity sensing is proposed. In contrast to far-field velocity sensing, near-field velocity sensing enables the simultaneous estimation of both radial and transverse velocities of a moving target. A maximum-likelihood-based method is proposed for jointly estimating the radial and transverse velocities from the echo signals. Assisted by near-field velocity sensing, a predictive beamforming framework is proposed for a moving communication user, which requires no channel estimation but achieves seamless data transmission. Finally, numerical examples validate the proposed approaches.

Abstract:We explore the propagation of structured vortex laser beams-shaped light carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM)-through complex multiple scattering medium. These structured vortex beams consist of a spin component, determined by the polarization of electromagnetic fields, and an orbital component, arising from their spatial structure. Although both spin and orbital angular momenta are conserved when shaped light propagates through a homogeneous, low-scattering medium, we investigate the conservation of these angular momenta during the propagation of Laguerre-Gaussian (LG) beams with varying topological charges through a turbid multiple scattering environment. Our findings demonstrate that the OAM of the LG beam is preserved, exhibiting a distinct phase shift indicative of the 'twist of light' through the turbid medium. This preservation of OAM within such environments is confirmed by in-house developed Monte Carlo simulations, showing strong agreement with experimental studies. Our results suggest exciting prospects for leveraging OAM in sensing applications, opening avenues for groundbreaking fundamental research and practical applications in optical communications and remote sensing.
A Laser Ranging Method Based on Photon Statistics

Abstract:A novel laser ranging method is proposed. This method avoids the processes of timing the pulse intervals or comparing the phase differences, which are done by using complex electric devices in traditional laser ranging methods. In the proposed method, the required range information is analyzed and abstracted mainly by optical ways, and is obtained by comparison of a large number of photons ultimately. Based on birefringence and total internal double reflection effects in single axis crystal, a single block LiNbO3 crystal with special structure is designed as the key device in the proposed method. The results show that this method not only simplifies the structure of devices, but also has a high precision, comparing with the traditional laser ranging methods. So a new thicking way for the laser ranging is provided.

Abstract:Based on electro-optic switch effect in crystal, a novel laser ranging method is proposed. CW-laser emitted by laser transmitter propagates forward to the measured target, after being reflected by the target, and then goes back to the transmitter. Close to the transmitter, a special mono-block LiNbO3 crystal is added into the round-trip light beams. High-voltage pulses with the sharp enough changes in rising edges are loaded on the crystal. Based on electro-optic effect, double refraction and internal double reflection effect in crystal, the crystal cuts off the round-trip light beams, and reflects a light pulse cut out by the crystal to a detector aside from the original beam path. The pulse width T is the period that laser propagates forward and back between the crystal and the target. The feasibility of the new idea is proved by our experiments and a brand-new way for the laser ranging is provided.

Abstract:Femtosecond light pulses carrying optical angular momentums (OAMs), possessing intriguing properties of helical phase fronts and ultrafast temporal profiles, enable many applications in nonlinear optics, strong-field physics and laser micro-machining. While generation of OAM-carrying ultrafast pulses and their interactions with matters have been intensively studied in experiments, three-dimensional characterization of ultrafast OAM-carrying light beams in spatio-temporal domain has, however, proved difficult to achieve. Conventional measurement schemes rely on the use of a reference pulsed light beam which needs to be well-characterized in its phase front and to have sufficient overlap and coherence with the beam under test, largely limiting practical applications of these schemes. Here we demonstrate a self-referencing set-up based on a tilted interferometer that can be used to measure complete spatio-temporal information of OAM-carrying femtosecond pulses with different topological charges. Through scanning one interferometer arm, the spectral phase over the pulse spatial profile can be obtained using the tilted interference signal, and the temporal envelope of the light field at one particular position around its phase singularity can be retrieved simultaneously, enabling three-dimensional beam reconstruction. This self-referencing technique, capable of measuring spatio-temporal ultrafast optical-vortex beams, may find many applications in fields of nonlinear optics and light-matter interactions.
