Abstract:This is a study of the sequences of Betti numbers of finitely generated modules over a complete intersection local ring, $R$. The subsequences $\{\beta^R_{i}(M)\}_{i\geq 0}$ with even, respectively, odd $i$ are known to be eventually given by polynomials in i with equal leading terms. We show that these polynomials coincide if $I^\square$, the ideal generated by the quadratic relations of the associated graded ring of $R$, satisfies ${\rm height}\ I^\square \ge {\rm codim}\ R -1$, and that the converse holds if $R$ is homogeneous or ${\rm codim}\ R \le 4$. Subsequently Avramov, Packauskas, and Walker proved that the terms of degree $j > {\rm codim}\ R - {\rm height}\ I^\square$ of the even and odd Betti polynomials are equal. We give a new proof of that result, based on an intrinsic characterization of residue rings of c.i. local rings of minimal multiplicity obtained in this paper. We also show that that bound is optimal.

Abstract:We survey recent calculations probing what constraints decoupling can put on the influence of very-high-energy physics on the predictions of inflation for the cosmic microwave background. Using garden-variety hybrid inflation models we identify two ways in which higher-energy physics can intrude into inflationary predictions. 1. Non-adiabatic physics up to 30 e-foldings before horizon exit can have observable consequences for the CMB, including the introduction of features in the fluctuation spectrum at specific multipoles and a general suppression of power at large scales (a prediction which was made before the recent release of WMAP results). Our comparison of simple models with the data marginally improves the goodness of fit compared to the standard concordance cosmology, but only at the 1.5-sigma level. 2. Adiabatic physics can also affect inflationary predictions through virtual loops of very-heavy particles, but these can only be distinguished from lower-energy effects within the context of specific models. We believe our conclusions should apply equally well to trans-Planckian physics provided only that this physics satisfies decoupling, such as string theory appears to do. (Non-decoupling trans-Planckian proposals must explain why meaningful theoretical predictions at low energies are possible at all.)

Positivity and nonstandard graded Betti numbers

Abstract:A foundational principle in the study of modules over standard graded polynomial rings is that geometric positivity conditions imply vanishing of Betti numbers. The main goal of this paper is to determine the extent to which this principle extends to the nonstandard graded case. In this setting, the classical arguments break down, and the results become much more nuanced. We introduce a new notion of Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity and employ exterior algebra techniques to control the shapes of nonstandard graded minimal free resolutions. Our main result reveals a unique feature in the nonstandard graded case: the possible degrees of the syzygies of a graded module in this setting are controlled not only by its regularity, but also by its depth. As an application of our main result, we show that, given a simplicial projective toric variety and a module M over its coordinate ring, the multigraded Betti numbers of M are contained in a particular polytope when M satisfies an appropriate positivity condition.

Uniform bounds on projective dimension and Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity

Abstract:In this article we obtain uniform effective upper bounds for the projective dimension and the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of homogeneous ideals inside a standard graded polynomial ring $S$ over a field. Such bounds are independent of the number of variables of $S$, in the spirit of Stillman's conjecture and of the Ananyan-Hochster's theorem, and depend on partial data extracted from the beginning or the end of the resolution. In this direction, we extend a result of McCullough from 2012 regarding a bound on regularity in terms of half the syzygies to a bound on the projective dimension and the regularity of an ideal in terms of a fraction of the syzygies.

Abstract:The conjecture of Kalai, Kleinschmidt, and Lee on the number of empty simplices of a simplicial polytope is established by relating it to the first graded Betti numbers of the polytope and applying a result of Migliore and the author. This approach allows us to derive explicit optimal bounds on the number of empty simplices of any given dimension. As a key result, we prove optimal bounds for the graded Betti numbers of any standard graded K-algebra in terms of its Hilbert function.

Abstract:In this note, we study Betti splittings of cover ideals of bipartite graphs. We prove that if $J \subset \Bbbk [x_1,\dots,x_n]$ is the cover ideal of a bipartite graph then the $x_i$-partition of $J$ is a Betti splitting for any $i$. We also prove that multigraded Betti numbers of any squarefree monomial ideal can appear in a certain part of multigraded Betti numbers of the cover ideal of a bipartite graph.

Abstract:Let $H = \langle n_1, n_2, n_3\rangle$ be a numerical semigroup. Let $\tilde H$ be the interval completion of $H$, namely the semigroup generated by the interval $\langle n_1, n_1+1, \ldots, n_3\rangle$. Let $K$ be a field and $K[H]$ the semigroup ring generated by $H$. Let $I_H^*$ be the defining ideal of the tangent cone of $K[H]$. In this paper, we describe the defining equations of $I_H^*$. From that, we establish the Herzog-Stamate conjecture for monomial space curves stating that $\beta_i(I_H^*) \le \beta_i(I_{\tilde H}^*)$ for all $i$, where $\beta_i(I_H^*)$ and $\beta_i(I_{\tilde H}^*)$ are the $i$th Betti numbers of $I_H^*$ and $I_{\tilde H}^*$ respectively.

Partial Betti splittings with applications to binomial edge ideals

Abstract:We introduce the notion of a partial Betti splitting of a homogeneous ideal, generalizing the notion of a Betti splitting first given by Francisco, Hà, and Van Tuyl. Given a homogeneous ideal $I$ and two ideals $J$ and $K$ such that $I = J+K$, a partial Betti splitting of $I$ relates some of the graded Betti of $I$ with those of $J, K$, and $J\cap K$. As an application, we focus on the partial Betti splittings of binomial edge ideals. Using this new technique, we generalize results of Saeedi Madani and Kiani related to binomial edge ideals with cut edges, we describe a partial Betti splitting for all binomial edge ideals, and we compute the total second Betti number of binomial edge ideals of trees.

Abstract:Let G be a numerical semigroup. In this paper, we prove an upper bound for the Betti numbers of the semigroup ring of G which depends only on the width of G, that is, the difference between the largest and the smallest generator of G. In this way, we make progress towards a conjecture of Herzog and Stamate. Moreover, for 4-generated numerical semigroups, the first significant open case, we prove the Herzog-Stamate bound for all but finitely many values of the width.

On the Betti Numbers of Finite Volume Hyperbolic Manifolds

Abstract:We obtain strong upper bounds for the Betti numbers of compact complex-hyperbolic manifolds. We use the unitary holonomy to improve the results given by the most direct application of the techniques of [DS17]. We also provide effective upper bounds for Betti numbers of compact quaternionic- and Cayley-hyperbolic manifolds in most degrees. More importantly, we extend our techniques to complete finite volume real- and complex-hyperbolic manifolds. In this setting, we develop new monotonicity inequalities for strongly harmonic forms on hyperbolic cusps and employ a new peaking argument to estimate $L^2$-cohomology ranks. Finally, we provide bounds on the de Rham cohomology of such spaces, using a combination of our bounds on $L^2$-cohomology, bounds on the number of cusps in terms of the volume, and the topological interpretation of reduced $L^2$-cohomology on certain rank one locally symmetric spaces.

Abstract:Several authors investigating the asymptotic behaviour of the Betti diagrams of the graded system obtained by taking powers of an ideal have shown that the shape of the nonzero entries in the diagrams stabilizes when $I$ is a homogeneous ideal with generators of the same degree. In this paper, we study the Betti diagrams of graded systems of ideals built by taking the initial ideals or generic initial ideals of powers, and discuss the stabilization of additional collections of Betti diagrams. Our main result shows that when I has generators of the same degree, the entries in the Betti diagrams of the reverse lexicographic generic initial system are given asymptotically by polynomials and that the shape of the diagrams stabilizes.

Abstract:We provide the regularity and the Cohen-Macaulay type of binomial edge ideals of Cohen-Macaulay cones, and we show the extremal Betti numbers of some classes of Cohen-Macaulay binomial edge ideals: Cohen-Macaulay bipartite and fan graphs. In addition, we compute the Hilbert-Poincaré series of the binomial edge ideals of some Cohen-Macaulay bipartite graphs.

Abstract:We study the Hilbert function and the graded Betti numbers of almost complete intersection artinian algebras. We show that that every Hilbert function of a complete intersection artinian algebra is the Hilbert function of an almost complete intersection algebra. In codimension $3$ we focus on almost complete intersection artinian algebras whose Hilbert function coincides with that of a complete intersection defined by $3$ forms of the same degree. We classify all the possible graded Betti numbers of such algebras and we specify what cancellations are allowed in a minimal graded free resolution.

Abstract:Let $G$ be the circulant graph $C_n(S)$ with $S \subseteq \{1, 2, \dots, \lfloor \frac{n}{2} \rfloor\}$, and let $I(G)$ denote the edge ideal in the polynomial ring $R=\mathbb{K}[x_0, x_1, \dots, x_{n-1}]$ over a field $\mathbb{K}$. In this paper, we compute the $\mathbb{N}$-graded Betti numbers of the edge ideals of three families of circulant graphs $C_n(1,2,\dots,\widehat{j},\dots,\lfloor \frac{n}{2} \rfloor)$, $C_{lm}(1,2,\dots,\widehat{2l},\dots, \widehat{3l},\dots,\lfloor \frac{lm}{2} \rfloor)$ and $C_{lm}(1,2,\dots,\widehat{l},\dots,\widehat{2l},\dots, \widehat{3l},\dots,\lfloor \frac{lm}{2} \rfloor)$. Other algebraic and combinatorial properties like regularity, projective dimension, induced matching number and when such graphs are well-covered, Cohen-Macaulay, Sequentially Cohen-Macaulay, Buchsbaum and $S_2$ are also discussed.

Building monomial ideals with fixed betti numbers

Abstract:Motivated by the fact that as the number of generators of an ideal grows so does the complexity of calculating relations among the generators, this paper identifies collections of monomial ideals with a growing number of generators which have predictable free resolutions. We use elementary collapses from discrete homotopy theory to construct infinitely many monomial ideals, with an arbitrary number of generators, which have similar or the same betti numbers. We show that the Cohen-Macaulay property in each unmixed (pure) component of the ideal is preserved as the ideal is expanded.

The Scarf complex and betti numbers of powers of extremal ideals

Abstract:This paper is concerned with finding bounds on betti numbers and describing combinatorially and topologically (minimal) free resolutions of powers of ideals generated by a fixed number $q$ of square-free monomials. Among such ideals, we focus on a specific ideal $\mathcal{E}_q$, which we call {\it extremal}, and which has the property that for each $r\ge 1$ the betti numbers of ${\mathcal{E}_q}^r$ are an upper bound for the betti numbers of $I^r$ for any ideal $I$ generated by $q$ square-free monomials (in any number of variables). We study the Scarf complex of the ideals ${\mathcal{E}_q}^r$ and use this simplicial complex to extract information on minimal free resolutions. In particular, we show that ${\mathcal{E}_q}^r$ has a minimal free resolution supported on its Scarf complex when $q\leq 4$ or when $r\leq 2$, and we describe explicitly this complex. For any $q$ and $r$, we also show that $\beta_1({\mathcal{E}_q}^r)$ is the smallest possible, or in other words equal to the number of edges in the Scarf complex. These results lead to effective bounds on the betti numbers of $I^r$, with $I$ as above. For example, we obtain that pd$(I^r)\leq 5$ for all ideals $I$ generated by $4$ square-free monomials and any $r\geq 1$.

An upper bound for the number of smooth values of a polynomial and its applications

Abstract:We provide a new upper bound for the number of smooth values of a polynomial with integer coefficients. This improves Timofeev's previous result unless the polynomial is a product of linear polynomials with integer coefficients. As an application, we fix an error in the proof of a result of Cassels which was used to prove that the Hurwitz zeta-function with algebraic irrational parameter has infinitely many zeros on the domain of convergence. We also apply the main result to a problem on primitive divisors of quadratic polynomials.
