Diagnosis and Treatment of Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease: Report of 1014 Cases

Abstract:Objective To investigate the epidemical features,clinical symptoms,diagnosis and treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Methods From October 2006 to November 2009,1014 cases of gastroesophageal reflux disease were reviewed at the Center of Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease,General Hospital of the Second Artillery Corps of PLA. The clinical features analyzed included sex,age,geographical distribution,symptoms,diagnosis and treatment. Results In the 1014 patients,248 (24.5%) pre\|sented typical symptoms such as sour regurgitation and heart-burn,while 766 patients (75.5%) showed atypical symptoms,e.g. gasping,breath holding,cough,expectoration,thoracalgia,pharyngalgia or pharyngeal foreign body sensation. Before admission,741 patients were misdiagnosed with asthma,bronchitis,chronic pharyngitis,and coronary artery disease. With a diagnosis of GERD,378 underwent laparoscopical Nissen fundoplication,472 received Stretta radiofrequency treatment,and 164 were treated with drugs. Conclusions GERD presents with various clinical symptoms involving multiple organs and systems. The recognition of GERD,and its early diagnosis and treatment might prevent misdiagnosisand mistreatment,thus improving the life quality and prognosis of the patients.
