Toxicological and Pharmacological Studies on the Volatile Oil from Nutmeg (myristica Fragrans)

Abstract:Objective:The volatile oil of nutmeg was used to study the acute toxicity,central nervous system depressant activity and the action on acute myocardial infarction.Methods:Volatile oil was administrated orally.LD50 in mice of was investigated and calculated.Its potentiation effect on hypnosis induced by subthreshold pentobarbital sodium in mice was observed;its influence on latency and percentage of convulsion,death latency and percentage of survival induced by strychnine was also observed;moreover,its anti-acute myocardial infarction effect in rats was tested.Results:LD50 in mice was 7.67g /kg.At the dose of 1.07g /kg(p.o),the volatile oil produced potentiation effect on hypnosis induced by subthreshold dose of pentobarbital sodium in mice,prolonged death latency and increased the survival rate for strychnine-induced convulsion in mice.There were no remarkable effects on acute myocardial infarction.Conclusion:These observations indicated that the volatile oil of nutmeg had central depressant actions and no remarkable effect on acute myocardial infarction.
