Cultural Meanings of Chinese Guanxi:A Viewpoint of Management Scholars

Abstract:Guanxi and its functions are considered as a basic factor that influences firms to do business in China and one of the important characteristics that firms have when doing business in the markets of Chinese culture.Although the literature on guanxi has been accumulated,the links between guanxi and Chinese culture relate are unclear — we do not know for sure how they are connected.Based on the concept of the narrowly defined culture and the core characteristic of Chinese culture,this paper attempts to explore this question from the viewpoint of management scholars.It searches the cultural meanings of guanxi in China along the aspects of guanxi state,guanxi behavior,guanxi norms,and guanxi orientation,building a more solid basis for the management scholars to discuss on the business functions of guanxi.The major conclusion is that,at the three levels of culture,guanxi state and guanxi behavior,unfolding the richness of Chinese culture in the personalized and diverse way,are the manifest culture of interpersonal relationship,while guanxi norms and guanxi orientation,carrying more profound cultural meanings and more important cultural genes and deciding the general characteristics of Chinese interpersonal relationship,are the basic assumptions and expressed values of Chinese culture on interpersonal relationship.
