Research on the Chose of Capability Reconfiguration Based on Technological Change Cycle

Abstract:With the accelerated pace of new technology and new product development and the increasing technological discontinu-ity,living environment for enterprises becomes increasingly grim. Many incumbent enterprises have been unable to respond effec-tively to the changes and save themselves out of bad situation. Then,how does enterprise respond to a rapidly changing technological environment,and maintain outstanding performance and the sus-tainability of competitive advantage? Present research suggests that organizational capacity is the key concept to explore the source of competitive advantage. The capability reconfiguration is an inevi-table development of enterprise capabilities. Under the environment of rapid technological changes,in view of technological changes and characteristics of entrepreneur capacity,for enterprises,the key to gaining a competitive advantage and long-term performance is effectively reconfiguration their resources and capabilities.In the context of rapid changes in the global technology practice,from technology life cycle theory and organizational capabilities theory,and integrated the inward-looking perspective of the dynamic ca-pabilities literature with the outward-looking technological discon-tinuities perspective and Lavie’s capability reconfiguration view,this paper attempts to build the mechanism continuum which en-terprises response to technological change with axis of technology life cycle and technical characteristics. Based on Lavie’s identifying three reconfiguration mechanisms: capability substitution,capabil-ity evolution,capability transformation,and according to different characters of technical change in the different stages of technical development,the paper further expands capability transformation mechanism and suggests that capability transformation mechanism is composed of technology fluctuation,technology proliferation and technology adaptability. So the paper develops a mechanism continuum of capability reconfiguration with 5 different types. Ap-plying three enterprises’ examples as supplement,the paper hopes to explain technological change in different stages of technological development and the impact of the enterprise. In the end,the paper makes suggestions about how to choose the best model of capability reconfiguration,which will help organizations to obtain sustained competitive advantage through organizational capability develop-ment.
