Abstract:We consider the problem of embedding hyperedges of a hypergraph as paths in a cycle such that the maximum congestion, namely the maximum number of paths that use any single edge in a cycle, is minimized.The minimum congestion hypergraph embedding in a cycle problem is known to be NP-hard and its graph version, the minimum congestion graph embedding in a cycle, is solvable in polynomial-time. Furthermore, for the graph problem, a polynomial-time approximation scheme for the weighted version is known. For the hypergraph model, several approximation algorithms with a ratio of two have been previously published. A recent paper reduced the approximation ratio to 1.5. We present a polynomial-time approximation scheme in this article, settling the debate regarding whether the problem is polynomial-time approximable.

Abstract:The node-weighted Steiner tree problem is a variation of classical Steiner minimum tree problem. Given a graph G=(V,E) with node weight function C:V→R+and a subset X of V, the node-weighted Steiner tree problem is to find a Steiner tree for the set X such that its total weight is minimum. In this paper, we study this problem in unit disk graphs and present a (1+Ε)-approximation algorithm for any Ε>0, when the given set of vertices is c-local. As an application, we use node-weighted Steiner tree to solve the node-weighted connected dominating set problem in unit disk graphs and obtain a (5+Ε)-approximation algorithm. © 2009 Springer Berlin Heidelberg.

Abstract:In this paper, we study a variant of set packing, in which a set P of paths in a graph $G=(V,E)$ is given, the goal is to find a maximum number of edge-disjoint paths of P. We show that the problem is NP-hard even if each path in P contains at most three edges, while it is hard to approximate within $O(|E|^{1/2-\epsilon })$ for the general case unless $NP=ZPP$. In the positive aspect, a parameterized algorithm relying on the maximum degree and the tree-width of G is derived. For tree networks, we present a polynomial time optimal algorithm.

Abstract:Let ${\cal{C}}_1$ be the set of fundamental cycles of breadth-first-search trees in a graph $G$ and ${\cal{C}}_2$ the set of the sums of two cycles in ${\cal{C}}_1$. Then we show that $(1) {\cal{C}}={\cal{C}}_1\bigcup{\cal{C}}_2$ contains a shortest $\Pi$-twosided cycle in a $\Pi$-embedded graph $G$;$(2)$ $\cal{C}$ contains all the possible shortest even cycles in a graph $G$;$(3)$ If a shortest cycle in a graph $G$ is an odd cycle, then $\cal{C}$ contains all the shortest odd cycles in $G$. Abstract:Though embedding problems have been considered for several regular graphs, it is still an open problem for hypercube into torus. In the paper, we prove the conjecture mathematically and obtain the minimum wirelength of embedding for hypercube into Cartesian product of paths and/or cycles. In addition, we explain that Gray code embedding is an optimal strategy in such embedding problems.

Abstract:In this paper, we design the first polynomial time approximation scheme for d -hop connected dominating set ( d -CDS) problem in growth-bounded graphs, which is a general type of graphs including unit disk graph, unit ball graph, etc. Such graphs can represent majority types of existing wireless networks. Our algorithm does not need geometric representation (e.g., specifying the positions of each node in the plane) beforehand. The main strategy is clustering partition. We select the d -CDS for each subset separately, union them together, and then connect the induced graph of this set. We also provide detailed performance and complexity analysis.

Abstract:Recently, O. Svensson and V. Traub have provided the first proof of the polynomial-time approximability of the asymmetric traveling salesman problem (ATSP) in the class of constant-factor approximation algorithms. Just as the famous Christofides–Serdyukov algorithm for the symmetric routing problems, these breakthrough results, applied as a "black box," have opened an opportunity for developing the first constant-factor polynomial-time approximation algorithms for several related combinatorial problems. At the same time, problems have been revealed in which this simple approach, based on reducing a given instance to one or more auxiliary ATSP instances, does not succeed. In the present paper, we extend the Svensson–Traub approach to the wider class of problems related to finding a minimum-weight cycle cover of an edge-weighted directed graph with an additional constraint on the number of cycles. In particular, it is shown for the first time that the minimum weight cycle cover problem with at most cycles admits polynomial-time approximation with constant factor for arbitrary .

Packing Short Cycles

Abstract:Cycle packing is a fundamental problem in optimization, graph theory, and algorithms. Motivated by recent advancements in finding vertex-disjoint paths between a specified set of vertices that either minimize the total length of the paths [Björklund, Husfeldt, ICALP 2014; Mari, Mukherjee, Pilipczuk, and Sankowski, SODA 2024] or request the paths to be shortest [Lochet, SODA 2021], we consider the following cycle packing problems: Min-Sum Cycle Packing and Shortest Cycle Packing. In Min-Sum Cycle Packing, we try to find, in a weighted undirected graph, $k$ vertex-disjoint cycles of minimum total weight. Our first main result is an algorithm that, for any fixed $k$, solves the problem in polynomial time. We complement this result by establishing the W[1]-hardness of Min-Sum Cycle Packing parameterized by $k$. The same results hold for the version of the problem where the task is to find $k$ edge-disjoint cycles. Our second main result concerns Shortest Cycle Packing, which is a special case of Min-Sum Cycle Packing that asks to find a packing of $k$ shortest cycles in a graph. We prove this problem to be fixed-parameter tractable (FPT) when parameterized by $k$ on weighted planar graphs. We also obtain a polynomial kernel for the edge-disjoint variant of the problem on planar graphs. Deciding whether Min-Sum Cycle Packing is FPT on planar graphs and whether Shortest Cycle Packing is FPT on general graphs remain challenging open questions.

Abstract:In the Asymmetric Traveling Salesperson Problem (ATSP) the goal is to find a closed walk of minimum cost in a directed graph visiting every vertex. We consider the approximability of ATSP on topologically restricted graphs. It has been shown by [Oveis Gharan and Saberi 2011] that there exists polynomial-time constant-factor approximations on planar graphs and more generally graphs of constant orientable genus. This result was extended to non-orientable genus by [Erickson and Sidiropoulos 2014]. We show that for any class of \emph{nearly-embeddable} graphs, ATSP admits a polynomial-time constant-factor approximation. More precisely, we show that for any fixed $k\geq 0$, there exist $\alpha, \beta>0$, such that ATSP on $n$-vertex $k$-nearly-embeddable graphs admits a $\alpha$-approximation in time $O(n^\beta)$. The class of $k$-nearly-embeddable graphs contains graphs with at most $k$ apices, $k$ vortices of width at most $k$, and an underlying surface of either orientable or non-orientable genus at most $k$. Prior to our work, even the case of graphs with a single apex was open. Our algorithm combines tools from rounding the Held-Karp LP via thin trees with dynamic programming. We complement our upper bounds by showing that solving ATSP exactly on graphs of pathwidth $k$ (and hence on $k$-nearly embeddable graphs) requires time $n^{\Omega(k)}$, assuming the Exponential-Time Hypothesis (ETH). This is surprising in light of the fact that both TSP on undirected graphs and Minimum Cost Hamiltonian Cycle on directed graphs are FPT parameterized by treewidth.

Abstract:A tight $\ell$-cycle minus an edge $C_\ell^-$ is the $3$-graph on the vertex set $[\ell]$, where any three consecutive vertices in the string $123\ldots\ell 1$ form an edge. We show that for every $\ell\ge 5$, $\ell$ not divisible by $3$, the extremal number is $ ex\left(C_\ell^-,n\right)=\tfrac1{24}n^3+O(n\ln n)=\left(\tfrac14+o(1)\right){n\choose 3}. $ We determine the extremal graph up to $O(n)$ edge edits.

The Constrained 2-Maxian Problem on Cycles

Abstract:This paper deals with p-maxian problem on cycles with an upper bound on the distances of all facilities. We consider the case of p=2 and show that, in the worst case, the optimal solution contains at least one vertex of the underlying cycle, which helps to develop an efficient algorithm to solve the constrained 2-maxian problem. Based on this property, we develop a linear time algorithm for the constrained 2-maxian problem on a cycle. We also discuss the relations between the constrained and unconstrained 2-maxian problems on which the underlying graphs are cycles.

Abstract:Connected dominating set (CDS) has played an important role in building virtual backbone, which is used on unicast, multicast, and fault-tolerant routing in wireless sensor networks. In order to reduce traffic congestion and communication delay, a routing-cost constrained minimum CDS (ROC–CDS) has been studied extensively in the literature. In this paper, we present a PTAS for $\alpha $ ROC–CDS where $\alpha \ge 5$, that is, there exists a polynomial-time $(1+\varepsilon )$-approximation for minimum CDS under constraint that for every pair of nodes u and v, $m_{CDS}(u,v) \le m(u,v)$ where $m(u,v)$ denotes the number of intermediate nodes in the shortest path between u and v, and $m_{CDS}(u,v)$ denotes the number of intermediate nodes of the shortest path between u and v through CDS produced by the approximation algorithm.
Prizing on Paths: A PTAS for the Highway Problem

Abstract:In the highway problem, we are given an n-edge line graph (the highway), and a set of paths (the drivers), each one with its own budget. For a given assignment of edge weights (the tolls), the highway owner collects from each driver the weight of the associated path, when it does not exceed the budget of the driver, and zero otherwise. The goal is choosing weights so as to maximize the profit. A lot of research has been devoted to this apparently simple problem. The highway problem was shown to be strongly NP-hard only recently [Elbassioni,Raman,Ray-'09]. The best-known approximation is O(\log n/\log\log n) [Gamzu,Segev-'10], which improves on the previous-best O(\log n) approximation [Balcan,Blum-'06]. In this paper we present a PTAS for the highway problem, hence closing the complexity status of the problem. Our result is based on a novel randomized dissection approach, which has some points in common with Arora's quadtree dissection for Euclidean network design [Arora-'98]. The basic idea is enclosing the highway in a bounding path, such that both the size of the bounding path and the position of the highway in it are random variables. Then we consider a recursive O(1)-ary dissection of the bounding path, in subpaths of uniform optimal weight. Since the optimal weights are unknown, we construct the dissection in a bottom-up fashion via dynamic programming, while computing the approximate solution at the same time. Our algorithm can be easily derandomized. We demonstrate the versatility of our technique by presenting PTASs for two variants of the highway problem: the tollbooth problem with a constant number of leaves and the maximum-feasibility subsystem problem on interval matrices. In both cases the previous best approximation factors are polylogarithmic [Gamzu,Segev-'10,Elbassioni,Raman,Ray,Sitters-'09].

On Virtual Network Embedding: Paths and Cycles

Abstract:Network virtualization provides a promising solution to overcome the ossification of current networks, allowing multiple Virtual Network Requests (VNRs) embedded on a common infrastructure. The major challenge in network virtualization is the Virtual Network Embedding (VNE) problem, which is to embed VNRs onto a shared substrate network and known to be $\mathcal{NP}$-hard. The topological heterogeneity of VNRs is one important factor hampering the performance of the VNE. However, in many specialized applications and infrastructures, VNRs are of some common structural features $\textit{e.g.}$, paths and cycles. To achieve better outcomes, it is thus critical to design dedicated algorithms for these applications and infrastructures by taking into accounting topological characteristics. Besides, paths and cycles are two of the most fundamental topologies that all network structures consist of. Exploiting the characteristics of path and cycle embeddings is vital to tackle the general VNE problem. In this paper, we investigated the path and cycle embedding problems. For path embedding, we proved its $\mathcal{NP}$-hardness and inapproximability. Then, by utilizing Multiple Knapsack Problem (MKP) and Multi-Dimensional Knapsack Problem (MDKP), we proposed an efficient and effective MKP-MDKP-based algorithm. For cycle embedding, we proposed a Weighted Directed Auxiliary Graph (WDAG) to develop a polynomial-time algorithm to determine the least-resource-consuming embedding. Numerical results showed our customized algorithms can boost the acceptance ratio and revenue compared to generic embedding algorithms in the literature.

An FPT algorithm for the embeddability of graphs into two-dimensional simplicial complexes

Abstract:We consider the embeddability problem of a graph G into a two-dimensional simplicial complex C: Given G and C, decide whether G admits a topological embedding into C. The problem is NP-hard, even in the restricted case where C is homeomorphic to a surface. We prove that the problem is fixed-parameter tractable in the size of the two-dimensional complex, by providing an O(2^{poly(c)}.n^2)-time algorithm. Moreover, we show that several known problems reduce to this one, such as the crossing number and the planarity number problems, and, under some additional conditions, the embedding extension problem. Our approach is to reduce to the case where G has bounded branchwidth via an irrelevant vertex method, and to apply dynamic programming. We do not rely on any component of the existing linear-time algorithms for embedding graphs on a fixed surface, but only on algorithms from graph minor theory.

For every fixed [math], it is proved that if an [math]-vertex directed graph has at most [math] pairwise arc-disjoint directed [math]-cycles, then there exists a set of at most [math] arcs that meets all directed [math]-cycles and that the set of [math]-cycles admits a fractional cover of value at most [math]. It is also proved that the ratio [math] cannot be improved to a constant smaller than [math]. For [math] the constant [math] is improved to [math] and for [math] it was recently shown by Cooper et al. [European J. Combin., 101 (2022), 103462] that the constant can be taken to be [math]. The result implies a deterministic polynomial time [math]-approximation algorithm for the directed [math]-cycle cover problem, improving upon a previous [math]-approximation algorithm of Kortsarz, Langberg, and Nutov, [SIAM J. Discrete Math., 24 (2010), pp. 255–269]. Abstract:We consider hypergraph network design problems where the goal is to construct a hypergraph that satisfies certain connectivity requirements. For graph network design problems where the goal is to construct a graph that satisfies certain connectivity requirements, the number of edges in every feasible solution is at most quadratic in the number of vertices. In contrast, for hypergraph network design problems, we might have feasible solutions in which the number of hyperedges is exponential in the number of vertices. This presents an additional technical challenge in hypergraph network design problems compared to graph network design problems: in order to solve the problem in polynomial time, we first need to show that there exists a feasible solution in which the number of hyperedges is polynomial in the input size.
