Abstract:Nowadays "China"(Zhong Guo) and "The Chinese Nation"(Zhong Hua Min Zu) are two popular and widely used proper nouns with definite meanings. However, their meanings have undergone great changes in the course of history. The word "China" was firstly used in the Zhou Kingdom. Originally it refers to "the Central City," denoting the capital where the king resided. In this sense, it was used in opposition to the other parts of the Kingdom. Later other meanings were derived such as the kingdoms of the Han People, in the territory, a medium——sized country, the central country etc. In the Song Dynasty it was first used to denote a sovereign country in contrast with foreign countries. "China" in this sense was firstly formally used in the treaties signed by the Government with modern European countries. After the Xinhai Revolution, "China" as the abbreviation of "Republic of China" and subsequently "The People’s Republic of China" was used by Chinese as the formal name of their country and this usage was also acknowledged by other countries. "Ethnic groups" in ancient Chinese is an ethnocentric concept. It was used to distinguish the Han People from other ethnic minorities whereas "Nation" is a modern ethnocentric concept, probably borrowed from Japanese. The compound "the Chinese Nation" was formed by combining the derivative "Chinese’ with "nation." This compound was firstly used in the late Qing Dynasty. It embodies unity in heterogeneity. There are more than 50 heterogeneous ethnic groups in China but they are unified into one. Today "the Chinese Nation" is a collective name of 56 ethnic groups in China, connoting solid unity in diversity.
