Abstract:In [L-Y5] (D(6): arXiv:1003.1178 [math.SG]) we introduced the notion of Azumaya $C^{\infty}$-manifolds with a fundamental module and morphisms therefrom to a complex manifold. In the current sequel, we use this notion to give a prototypical definition of supersymmetric D-branes of A-type (i.e. A-branes) -- in an appropriate region of the Wilson's theory-space of string theory -- as special Lagrangian morphisms from such objects with a unitary, minimally flat connection-with-singularities. This merges Donaldson's picture of special Lagrangian submanifolds and the Polchinski-Grothendieck Ansatz for D-branes on a Calabi-Yau space. Basic phenomena of D-branes such as Higgsing/un-Higgsing and large- vs. small-brane wrapping can be realized via deformations of such morphisms. Classical results of Alexander, Hilden, Lozano, Montesinos, and Thurston suggest then a genus-like expansion of the path-integral of D3-branes. Similarly for D2-branes and M2-branes. In the last section, we use the technical results of Joyce on desingularizations of special Lagrangian submanifolds with conical singularities to explain how A-branes thus defined can be driven and re-assemble under a split attractor flow, as studied in an earlier work of Denef. This section is to be read with arXiv:hep-th/0107152 of Denef and arXiv:math.DG/0303272 of Joyce.
Special geometry, quasi-modularity and attractor flow for BPS structures

Abstract:We study mathematical structures on the moduli spaces of BPS structures of $\mathcal{N}=2$ theories. Guided by the realization of BPS structures within type IIB string theory on non-compact Calabi-Yau threefolds, we develop a notion of BPS variation of Hodge structure which gives rise to special Kähler geometry as well as to Picard-Fuchs equations governing the central charges of the BPS structure. We focus our study on cases with complex one dimensional moduli spaces and charge lattices of rank two including Argyres-Douglas $A_2$ as well as Seiberg-Witten $SU(2)$ theories. In these cases the moduli spaces are identified with modular curves and we determine the expressions of the central charges in terms of quasi-modular forms of the corresponding duality groups. We furthermore determine the curves of marginal stability and study the attractor flow in these examples, showing that it provides another way of determining the complete BPS spectrum in these cases.

Abstract:We propose a construction of Kähler and non-Kähler Calabi–Yau manifolds by branched double covers of twistor spaces. In this construction we use the twistor spaces of four-manifolds with self-dual conformal structures, with the examples of connected sum of n ${\mathbb{P}^{2}}$s. We also construct K3-fibered Calabi–Yau manifolds from the branched double covers of the blow-ups of the twistor spaces. These manifolds can be used in heterotic string compactifications to four dimensions. We also construct stable and polystable vector bundles. Some classes of these vector bundles can give rise to supersymmetric grand unified models with three generations of quarks and leptons in four dimensions.

Abstract:The three tachyon-free non-supersymmetric string theories in ten dimensions provide a handle on quantum gravity away from the supersymmetric lamppost. However, they have not been shown to be fully consistent; although local anomalies cancel due to versions of the Green-Schwarz mechanism, there could be global anomalies, not cancelled by the Green-Schwarz mechanism, that could become fatal pathologies. We compute the twisted string bordism groups that control these anomalies via the Adams spectral sequence, showing that they vanish completely in two out of three cases (Sugimoto and SO(16) 2 ) and showing a partial vanishing also in the third (Sagnotti 0'B model). We also compute lower-dimensional bordism groups of the non-supersymmetric string theories, which are of interest to the classification of branes in these theories via the Cobordism Conjecture. We propose a worldvolume content based on anomaly inflow for the SO(16) 2 NS5-brane, and discuss subtleties related to the torsion part of the Bianchi identity. As a byproduct of our techniques and analysis, we also reprove that the outer Z 2 automorphism swapping the two E 8 factors in the supersymmetric heterotic string is also non-anomalous.

Attractors, Geodesics, and the Geometry of Moduli Spaces

Abstract:We connect recent conjectures and observations pertaining to geodesics, attractor flows, Laplacian eigenvalues and the geometry of moduli spaces by using that attractor flows are geodesics. For toroidal compactifications, attractor points are related to (degenerate) masses of the Laplacian on the target space, and also to the Laplacian on the moduli space. We also explore compactifications of M-Theory to $5$D on a Calabi-Yau threefold and argue that geodesics are unique in a special set of classes, providing further evidence for a recent conjecture by Raman and Vafa. Finally, we describe the role of the marked moduli space in $4$d $\mathcal{N} = 2$ compactifications. We study split attractor flows in an explicit example of the one-parameter family of quintics and discuss setups where flops to isomorphic Calabi-Yau manifolds exist.

Abstract:We study extremal non-BPS black holes and strings arising in M-theory compactifications on Calabi-Yau threefolds, obtained by wrapping M2 branes on non-holomorphic 2-cycles and M5 branes on non-holomorphic 4-cycles. Using the attractor mechanism we compute the black hole mass and black string tension, leading to a conjectural formula for the asymptotic volumes of connected, locally volume-minimizing representatives of non-holomorphic, even-dimensional homology classes in the threefold, without knowledge of an explicit metric. In the case of divisors we find examples where the volume of the representative corresponding to the black string is less than the volume of the minimal piecewise-holomorphic representative, predicting recombination for those homology classes and leading to stable, non-BPS strings. We also compute the central charges of non-BPS strings in F-theory via a near-horizon AdS_3 limit in 6d which, upon compactification on a circle, account for the asymptotic entropy of extremal non-supersymmetric 5d black holes (i.e., the asymptotic count of non-holomorphic minimal 2-cycles).

Abstract:We investigate supervised learning in neural networks. We consider a multi-layered feed-forward network with back propagation. We find that the network of small-world connectivity reduces the learning error and learning time when compared to the networks of regular or random connectivity. Our study has potential applications in the domain of data-mining, image processing, speech recognition, and pattern recognition.

Abstract:We study the vacuum moduli spaces of 3d N=2 supersymmetric quantum field theories by applying the formalism developed in our previous paper <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1404.5527" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1404.5527">arXiv:1404.5527</a>. The 3d theories can be realized by branes in type IIB string theory, which in a decoupling limit reduce to 4d N=4 super-Yang-Mills theory on an interval with BPS defects inserted. The moduli space of a given 3d theory is obtained by solving a generalization of Nahm's equations with appropriate boundary/junction conditions, along with help from the S-duality of type IIB string theory. Our classical computations reproduce many known results about the quantum-corrected moduli spaces of 3d theories, e.g. U(N_c) theories with N_f flavors with mass and FI parameters turned on. In particular, our methods give first-principles derivations of several results in the literature, including the s-rule, quantum splitting of classical Coulomb branches, the lifting of the Coulomb branch by non-Abelian instantons, quantum merging of Coulomb and Higgs branches, and phase transitions from re-ordering 5-branes.

Non-perturbative topological string theory on compact Calabi-Yau 3-folds

Abstract:We obtain analytic and numerical results for the non-perturbative amplitudes of topological string theory on arbitrary, compact Calabi-Yau manifolds. Our approach is based on the theory of resurgence and extends previous special results to the more general case. In particular, we obtain explicit trans-series solutions of the holomorphic anomaly equations. Our results predict the all orders, large genus asymptotics of the topological string free energies, which we test in detail against high genus perturbative series obtained recently in the compact case. We also provide additional evidence that the Stokes constants appearing in the resurgent structure are closely related to integer BPS invariants.

Abstract:In this paper we study half-BPS type IIB supergravity solutions with multiple $AdS_3\times S^3\times M_4$ asymptotic regions, where $M_4$ is either $T^4$ or $K_3$. These solutions were first constructed in [1] and have geometries given by the warped product of $AdS_2 \times S^2 \times M_4 $ over $\Sigma$, where $\Sigma$ is a Riemann surface. We show that the holographic boundary has the structure of a star graph, i.e. $n$ half-lines joined at a point. The attractor mechanism and the relation of the solutions to junctions of self-dual strings in six-dimensional supergravity are discussed. The solutions of [1] are constructed introducing two meromorphic and two harmonic functions defined on $\Sigma$. We focus our analysis on solutions corresponding to junctions of three different conformal field theories and show that the conditions for having a solution charged only under Ramond-Ramond three-form fields reduce to relations involving the positions of the poles and the residues of the relevant harmonic and meromorphic functions. The degeneration limit in which some of the poles collide is analyzed in detail. Finally, we calculate the holographic boundary entropy for a junction of three CFTs and obtain a simple expression in terms of poles and residues.
Moduli Stabilization and Stability in Type II/F-theory flux compactifications

Abstract:In this thesis we study String Theory compactifications to four dimensions focusing on the moduli stabilization process and the associated vacua structure in various frameworks, from Type IIA to F-theory, interpreting the results in the context of the Swampland Program. More specifically, we generalize the bilinear formalism of the scalar potential to include the contributions of geometric fluxes, which we use to perform a systematic search of vacua. We also consider the 10d uplift of AdS4 vacua arising from the 4d massive Type IIA effective theory with only RR and NSNS fluxes. Using the language of SU(3)xSU(3) structures and performing an expansion around the smearing approximation in powers of the string coupling, we study the stability of the SUSY solution and its non-SUSY partner. We contrast the results with the Weak Gravity Conjecture and the AdS instability conjecture in toroidal orbifold examples and find that some non-SUSY cases are in tension with the predictions of those conjectures. From the F-theory perspective, we study moduli stabilization in the complex structure sector of elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau 4-folds in the Large Complex Structure limit. Using homological mirror symmetry, we replicate the analysis for the Type IIA case and give a bilinear expression for the scalar potential, allowing for a detailed study of the vacua structure. We find two distinct families of flux configurations compatible with the tadpole constraints that enable full moduli stabilization. We thoroughly examine the most generic one in the Type IIB limit, where the superpotential is also quadratic and polynomial corrections can be considered at all orders. Finally, we show that at this level of approximation supersymmetric SUSY vacua always contain flat directions. We conclude with a summary of the results and some comments about open questions and future lines of research.

Abstract:Recently an exact duality between topological string and the spectral theory of operators constructed from mirror curves to toric Calabi-Yau threefolds has been proposed. At the same time an exact quantization condition for the cluster integrable systems associated to these geometries has been conjectured. The consistency between the two approaches leads to an infinite set of constraints for the refined BPS invariants of the toric Calabi-Yau threefolds. We prove these constraints for the $Y^{N,m}$ geometries using the $K$-theoretic blowup equations for $SU(N)$ SYM with generic Chern-Simons invariant $m$.

Abstract: In this Part II, D(10.2), of D(10), we take D(10.1) (arXiv:1302.2054 [math.AG]) as the foundation to define the notion of $Z$-semistable morphisms from general Azumaya nodal curves, of genus $\ge 2$, with a fundamental module to a projective Calabi-Yau 3-fold and show that the moduli stack of such $Z$-semistable morphisms of a fixed type is compact. This gives us a counter moduli stack to D-strings as the moduli stack of stable maps in Gromov-Witten theory to the fundamental string. It serves and prepares for us the basis toward a new invariant of Calabi-Yau 3-fold that captures soft-D-string world-sheet instanton numbers in superstring theory. This note is written hand-in-hand with D(10.1) and is to be read side-by-side with ibidem.

Abstract:The near horizon geometry of a fundamental string wrapped around an S1 reduced to four dimensions is expected to be AdS2 x S2. A probe string analysis suggests a no-force condition indicating supersymmetry, which coincides with the condition that the AdS2 is embedded in AdS3. We therefore consider the bulk string theory in terms of a WZW model on AdS3 following recent proposals by Dabholkar et. al and Giveon et. al. We find that conformal symmetry of the model naturally leads to the no-force constraints obtained from the probes. Moreover, we are able to extract the values of the moduli that account for the value of the microscopic entropy. We also investigate higher derivative corrections of the form alpha'^3 R^4 + flux terms to the horizon, in the context of type IIB supergravity. Imposing the no-force condition from the probe analysis leads to a striking simplification of the equations of motion at this order in alpha'. However, we argue that the value of the entropy can only be determined by considering all orders in alpha'.
