Abstract:The problem of guaranteed cost control for a class of linear discrete uncertain system is considered in this paper. The system under consideration contains convex polyhedral uncertain parameters. An upper bound of performance measured by standard quadratic function is constructed and a method of designing state feedback robust stabilizing control law guaranteeing this quadratic performance index of system be less than this upper bound is derived. It is proved that whether such a control law exists is equivalent to the feasibility of a group of linear matrix inequality Also, a procedure is given to select an optimal state feedback controller in the sense of minimizing the upper bound of quadratic performance index.

Optimal Control Applications and Methods

Abstract:An improved control vector parameterization (CVP) method is proposed to solve optimal control problems with inequality path constraints by introducing the l(1) exact penalty function and a novel smoothing technique. Both the state and control variables are allowed to appear explicitly in the inequality path constraints simultaneously. By applying the penalty function and smoothing technique, all the inequality path constraints are firstly reformulated as non-differentiable penalty terms and incorporated into the objective function. Then, the penalty terms are smoothed by using a novel smooth function, leading to a smooth optimal control problem with no inequality path constraints. With discretizing the control space, a corresponding nonlinear programming (NLP) problem is derived, and error between the NLP problem and the original problem is discussed. Results reveal that if the smoothing parameter is sufficiently small, the solution of the NLP problem is approximately equal to the original problem, which shows the convergence of the proposed method. After clarifying some theories of the proposed approach, a concomitant numerical algorithm is put forward with furnishing the updating rules of both the penalty parameter and smoothing parameter. Simulation examples verify the advantages of the proposed method for tackling nonlinear optimal control problems with different inequality path constraints. Copyright (c) 2016 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Abstract:Optimal control of hybrid systems encounters the difficulty of computational complexity due to hybrid systems involving continuous variable and discrete variable.Hybrid model mixed with logics and rules is presented. Mixed integer nonlinear programming algorithm integrated constraint programming is applied to solve optimal control problems of hybrid model. The practical result shows that this method can build more precision model by utilizing mechanism model of industrial process and expert experience. And it also shows that the algorithm of mixed integer nonlinear programming integrated constraint programming can solve the optimal control problem of hybrid model rapidly. So this method can be used in real-time control of industrial process.

Abstract:The quasi-Riccati equation method is discussed for solving the linear-nonquadratic optimal control problems without terminal state-constrains;and accordingly propose an efficient method for obtaining numerical solutions to the linear-nonquadratic problems without constraints.By combining this method with the penalty method which approximately converts a problem with constraints to one without constraints,we develop an algorithm for approximately computing the solutions to linear-nonquadratic optimal control problems with terminal state-constrains.

Abstract:Optimal control for improving the stability and reliability of nonlinear stochastic dynamical systems is of great significance for enhancing system performances. However, it has not been adequately investigated because the evaluation indicators for stability (e.g. maximal Lyapunov exponent) and for reliability (e.g. mean first-passage time) cannot be explicitly expressed as the functions of system states. Here, a unified procedure is established to derive optimal control strategies for improving system stability and reliability, in which a physical intuition-inspired separation technique is adopted to split feedback control forces into conservative components and dissipative components, the stochastic averaging is then utilized to express the evaluation indicators of performances of controlled system, the optimal control strategies are finally derived by minimizing the performance indexes constituted by the sigmoid function of maximal Lyapunov exponent (for stability-based control)/the reciprocal of mean first-passage time (for reliability-based control), and the mean value of quadratic form of control force. The unified procedure converts the original functional extreme problem of optimal control into an extremum value problem of multivariable function which can be solved by optimization algorithms. A numerical example is worked out to illustrate the efficacy of the optimal control strategies for enhancing system performance.

Abstract:In this paper, we focus on a method based on optimal control to address the optimization problem. The objective is to find the optimal solution that minimizes the objective function. We transform the optimization problem into optimal control by designing an appropriate cost function. Using Pontryagin's Maximum Principle and the associated forward-backward difference equations (FBDEs), we derive the iterative update gain for the optimization. The steady system state can be considered as the solution to the optimization problem. Finally, we discuss the compelling characteristics of our method and further demonstrate its high precision, low oscillation, and applicability for finding different local minima of non-convex functions through several simulation examples.

Abstract:This paper focuses on investigating the optimal actuator location for achieving minimum norm controls in the context of approximate controllability for degenerate parabolic equations. We propose a formulation of the optimization problem that encompasses both the actuator location and its associated minimum norm control. Specifically, we transform the problem into a two-person zero-sum game problem, resulting in the development of four equivalent formulations. Finally, we establish the crucial result that the solution to the relaxed optimization problem serves as an optimal actuator location for the classical problem.

Abstract:To improve the overall control performance of nonlinear systems, an optimal control method, based on the framework of hybrid systems, is proposed. Firstly, the nonlinear systems are approximated by a number of piecewise affine models which are produced by the nonlinear systems at the specified operating points, then the piecewise affine models are synthesized under the framework of hybrid systems, and an associated optimal control problem, in which decision variables involve not only admissible continuous control but also the scheduling of subsystem modes, is established. Secondly, the optimal control problem is transformed into a MIQP problem by discretization over the whole state space and admissible control space to obtain the numerical optimal solution. For speeding up the algorithm, the simultaneous method on finite elements is used to lower the dimensions of the MIQP problem. Consequently, a hybrid model-based MPC for nonlinear systems is designed, and the adverse effects of model mismatch resulted from simultaneous method is weakened by MPC strategy. Simulations and comparisons with soft-switching method, hard-switching method and MLD method, confirm that a satisfactory performance can be obtained using the presented approach. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:This paper focuses on optimal control problem for a class of discrete-time nonlinear systems. In practical applications, computation time is a crucial consideration in solving optimal control problem, especially when meeting the real-time requirements of control systems. To address this challenge, this study proposes a novel framework based on the optimal control method. Firstly, the original optimal control problem is transformed into an equivalent optimization problem, which is resolved using the Pontryagin's maximum principle from the perspective of optimal control. Furthermore, explicit formulas for computing both the gradient and hessian matrix of the cost function are proposed. A numerical algorithm with rapid convergence and high efficiency is also provided.

Abstract:Nonlinear model predictive control (NMPC) needs to solve optimal control problems (OCPs) instantaneously so that new input can be applied in time. Computational delay, which may destroy the stability of the closed-loop, usually arises in the solution procedure of non-convex and nonlinear OCP with differential equations as its constraints. The traditional termination criteria for optimization algorithms usually cause the solution procedure to converge slowly and waste computing resources. In this paper, new termination rules called Reduced Precision Solution (RPS) criteria are proposed. The RPS criteria take the practical solution precision into account and lead to good approximate solutions of OCPs. Thus, the computation time is saved, and the negative effect of computational delay is reduced. A classical nonlinear model formulated by ordinary differential equations is simulated to demonstrate the efficiency of the RPS criteria.

Abstract:This paper discusses the robustness of nonlinear model predictive control (NMPC) based on sub-optimal solution obtained under reduced precision solution (RPS) criteria. NMPC needs to solve the optimal control problem (OCP) quickly and the input is injected to the controlled plant in time. Traditional convergence criteria in optimization algorithms usually cost excessive long computation time with little improvement of solution, which results in degradation of control performance eventually. RPS criteria are new convergence criteria for deciding whether the current iterate is good enough and whether the optimization procedure should be terminated. It can terminate the optimization process timely. This work pays special attention to robustness of the closed-loop system controlled by NMPC with RPS criteria when model plant mismatch exists. Simulations demonstrate that the proposed algorithm owns good robustness and stability.

Abstract:By equivalently transforming propositional logic into linear inequalities involving auxiliary logical and continuous variables, a general linear system model (GLSM) was established to describe accurately a wide range of nonlinear systems with typical non-smooth and even discontinuous nonlinear components. A GLSM based mixed integer predictive control (MIPC) approach with dynamic predictive horizon for optimal regulating and tracking problem of a class of nonlinear systems with typical nonlinear components was studied. A standard mixed integer quadratic programming (MIQP) problem was solved at every time instant when MIPC was implemented. The already developed branch and bound (B B) based standard MIQP solver was used for the numerical simulations, which showed that the approach developed was suitable and effective for optimal control of systems with typical nonlinear components.

Abstract:In this technical note, the near-optimal control problem is investigated for a class of time-varying linear discrete systems subject to additive nonlinearities and random gains. First, certain upper bound on the cost function is proposed to quantify the control performance. Subsequently, in virtue of the time-varying discrete Riccati-like recursions (DRLRs), the near-optimal control strategy is designed such that this upper bound is minimized over the finite horizon. To reflect the steady-state behavior of the dynamic system, the upper bound of the derived time-varying DRLRs is also analyzed over the infinite horizon by resorting to the semidefinite programming method. Finally, a numerical example is provided to verify the validity and advantages of the proposed methodology.
