A New Cultural-semiotic Perspective: Perception of Signs and Semi-Autonomous Generation of Meaning

Abstract:The generation of meaning is not only dependent on the structure of semiotic texts, but the result of the mutual influencing of signs and the subject. The sign, the main function of which is representation, exists in a dichotomy, i.e., the internal sign and the external sign. The internal sign emphasizes the psychological attribute whereas the external sign emphasizes the materialistic attribute. Both signs depend on each other, linked through two fundamental processes: perception and internalization, which serve as the precondition of the generation of meaning. Human emotions and the operation of internal signs constitute the core of the generation of meaning, which, in turn, as a result of the collaboration and mutual stimulation of both kinds of signs, takes on a semi-autonomous look. The status of emotions in semiotic studies should be promoted for this symbolizes the return of the subject, which is the very source, working field and ultimate destination of signs, as well as the generative field of meaning.
