Abstract:Although spot price theory has been successfully practiced in some power markets worldwide, it has always been criticized for its lack of transparency. A competitive open power market requires transparent price signals, and each market participant has the right to query what has been charged and why. This paper presents a practical algorithm to give the detailed analysis of spot prices. By avoiding complicated sensitivity analysis of nonlinear programming, the implementation of the proposed algorithm is fast and highly efficient. Although the spot price can only be approximately decomposed by this algorithm, the accuracy of the result is still high due to its fully making use of the power system characteristics. Most important of all, the individual market participant can apply the proposed algorithm to evaluate the rationality of the price that he has to pay, while the complete sensitivity analysis of nonlinear programming cannot, since not all of the information necessary for the sensitivity analysis is available among the market participants. A well-known three-bus system and the IEEE 30-bus system are studied to illustrate the proposed algorithm.
