Abstract:Objective To develop an animal modal of biliary atresia with the Rhesus Rotavirus (RRV)infection. Methods New born Balb/c mice were randomized into 2 groups.Group A mice were infected with rhesus rotavirus intraperitoneolly and group B were given 2%FCS-MEM as control. The clinical and histological changes associated with BA were observed and scored. The extrahepatic bile ducts were serially sectioned and stained with hematoxylin and eosin. Results Of the eighty-one mice from group A.sixty-three(77.8%)mice showed signs of cholestasis and growth retardation. Hcpatobiliary anatomy showed atrophy or dilation of gall bladder and extrahepatic biliary atrasia. These changes resemble biliary atresia in humans.None of the twenty one mice from group B developed any anonmly after inoculation with MEM.Weight difference became obvious three days after inocula- tion.and pcaked on the ninth day when weight of the BA group was 3.65±0.19g and that of the con- trol group was 5.96±0.25g(P=0.000).Conclusions Intra-peritoneal inoculation with RRV can produce biliary atresia in new born balb/c mice. This presented a new model for the further studies of BA.
