Abstract:The primary aim of this research is to analyze the hazards and seismic performance of reservoirs and typical large dams based on a field investigation following the Wenchuan 8.0 earthquake. The current seismic performance standards being achieved are discussed and further suggestions are given for super high dams. Based on field investigations, statistics are also given on damaged small reservoirs and damage severities, due to the many various types of earthquake threat. It is of interest to note that the major structures of the medium-sized hydropower stations on the Minjiang river did withstand the Wenchuan earthquake, despite earthquake intensity exceeding engineering design expectations. All the dams remained overall stable. The Shapai roller-compacted concrete (RCC) arch dam and the Zipingpu concrete-faced rockfill (CFR) dam suffered damage. The main earthquake-induced hazards to the dam structures and to both abutments are detailed. Case study analyses of the hazards and reinforcement provision revealed that: 1) The Wenchuan earthquake proved very dangerous for small reservoirs, with destroyed reservoirs widely distributed. The risk of failure of small dams can be classified into three levels based on field investigation. 2) The damage to and behavior of the large dams in the area affected by the earthquake prove that the Chinese codes relating to the seismic design of large dams are appropriate. 3) Appropriate reinforcement can increase the overall stiffness of abutments, riverbed foundation and the adjacent slopes, further improving the seismic performance of dams. 4) The design and management of emergency responses, to cope with extreme conditions, should be improved, and a unified response platform, covering all hydropower engineering projects in each valley should be established. The effects to be expected and the seismic design measures to be taken still pose great challenges for engineers in respect of large dams.
The Evolution of Earthquake Engineering Geology in China

Abstract:The evolution of earthquake engineering geology (also called as earthquake geotechnique) in the past 50 years in China is reviewed in this paper. The historical earthquake chronological table, the earthquake catalogue of China, the seismic zoning map of China and the new intensity scale of China are the milestones at the beginning of this disci- pline. During the further evolution, two branches were gradually formed as regional seismic hazard assessment (SHA) and site seismic evaluation. After strong earthquakes occurrecd from 1966 to 1976, the methodologies and procedures of SHA and microzonation were improved rapidly, the understandings on the effect of local site condition on strong ground motion and on the site failure during the shock were developed in depth. The publication of monographs by the name of earthquake engineering geology marked the formal founding of the discipline. The codes issued for seismic safety assessment of engineering site and geotechnical prospecting opened up a significant development in practice. In general, the discipline made an important contribution to the China construction against the earthquake disaster.

Abstract:The main prospects of the urban underground development in China are a greater depth and a wider dimension. Advanced devices and technologies require the development of new materials. From the aspects of excavation mechanical materials, support materials, and environmental protection materials, this study summarizes the status of the main materials in use and the prospects of new materials. Aside from the strength requirement, an environment-friendly feature is the main requirement of new materials. Thus, self-healing, biological, and green support materials are demonstrated as future prospects.

Abstract:China is a country with many earthquakes. Seismic safety monitoring and building earthquake-proofing technique are important means to protect the safety of people’s property in China. However, up to now, China’s seismic reinforcement and identification technology is still not mature enough. In particular, the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake caused great loss of life and safety to the Chinese people. This paper, takes seismic identification and reinforcement technology of building structures as the research object and summarizes the main methods of building structure seismic resistance in China. This paper is based on an in-depth analysis of the main seismic reinforcement and identification techniques in China, deeply analyzes the crux of anti-seismic and reinforcement of building structure combining with the current building seismic reinforcement typical cases, and puts forward some reasonable suggestions and improvement methods for the future development of building seismic identification and reinforcement design.

Abstract:Seismic risk management is a very complex process, involved engineering mitigation measures and non-engineering countermeasures. The former prescribed in seismic design codes and prevention counter plans, played a great role in earthquake disaster reduction of China in decades. In the latter, the economy, finance, society are very active in market system, and must be paid more attention. The systemof seismic risk management in China is summarized in this paper. Nowadays, it is on the transition stage, from the planned economy system to the market system. The status of earthquake insurance is briefly introduced and catastrophe insurance derivatives are suggested as supplements. The important issue in the pricing of financial instruments is how to integrate with engineering seismic risk assessment. Seismic risk assessment in general consists of two parts: seismic hazard assessment and vulnerability evaluation. Seismic hazard has many sectors such as on ground motion, surface faulting, liquefaction, landslides, remained deformation. Vulnerability evaluation is to infer a conditional probability of the potential damage of engineering structure given various earthquake intensities. Other financial instruments can also be used for reference in the management system, for example, mitigation loans and tax rebate. Banks and financial institutions can provide financial support to the property owners who have adopted cost-effective engineering mitigation measures. To encourage the adoption, a homeowner can get a rebate on taxes if he has adopted an engineering measure against earthquake damage.

Abstract:There were many earthquakes in China and the caused huge economic loss and life casualty.The professionalized search and rescue procedures can reduce the economic and life loss efficiently.It is necessary for a seismic disaster relief system.From a lot of earthquake disaster example and based on the evaluation methods for the seismic disasters and seismic design for buildings,this paper demonstrates characteristics of the seismic disaster according to types of the stracture.The disaster of the different structure types gives the evidence for the design of the controllable seismic ruins for the training base of the emergency seismic rescue in China.

Abstract:So far,there are still many unsolved problems in seismic analysis and failure mechanism study of underground structures in China.On the basis of analyzing and summarizing the existing theoretical analysis and experimental study of seismic response of underground structures,six key issues need to be seriously considered and further studied in the near future.They are model techniques of shaking tests for underground structures,nonlinear dynamic constitutive model of soil,seismic failure mechanism of bearing members of underground structures under high axial loads,asynchronous seismic wave motion input and seismic response of underground structures under it,physical fundamentals and constitutive model of large post-liquefaction deformation of saturated sand,and finally large-scale three-dimensional nonlinear dynamic soil-structure interaction model.Study on the issues above will give some help to consummate theoretical seismic analysis methods and model test techniques of underground structures,and to get seismic response characteristics and failure mechanism of large-scale underground structures,which have vital scientific meanings and great value in engineering practice.

Abstract:The seismo-electromagnetic (EM) method is an important geophysical method that plays a major role in the observation of seismic anomalies related to earthquake precursors. It is the most promising method for a breakthrough in short-term earthquake prediction. The digital transformation and network upgrading implemented in the "Ninth five-year plan" and "Tenth five-year plan" have optimized the original observation system, improved the quality of observed data, enriched the seismic-electromagnetic information, and enhanced the analysis capability and timeliness of seismic-electromagnetic anomalies. These improvements are of major importance for the research on seismo-electromagnetics as well as for the development of new technologies. Since the beginning of the 21st century, China has launched a satellite named CSES that was designed for the generation and study of seismo-electromagnetic data and built a high-power transmitting source and a new CSELF observation network that is used specifically for earthquake monitoring. This platform has promoted the full-time three-dimensional EM monitoring and the identification of earthquake anomalies. Based on the study of anomalies related to earthquake precursors, the physical and numerical simulations, and the study on generation mechanism of anomalies in China, we summarize the characteristics of earthquake EM anomalies and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of different EM observation methods. Finally, considering the related questions of the seismo-electromagnetic prediction and implementing the recent developments both in China and abroad, we review the current status of seismo-electromagnetic research and propose strategies for future research.

Abstract:<p class="a-plus-plus">Earthquakes are natural phenomena which cannot be controlled, but their effects can be minimised. This study proposes a state-of-the-art review of the main effects of earthquakes on civil engineering structures and provides possible mitigation solutions to reduce seismic vulnerability. The main aspects reviewed include the liquefaction in dams and tunnels, the cracking and tilting of roads and buildings, and the live-load and scour-depth effects on bridges. The main causes of earthquakes and their problems on civil engineering structures through observations in recent great earthquakes are discussed. Results show that a large damage contrast has been observed between developed and undeveloped/underdeveloped countries credited to the incredible financial, social, and cultural contrasts between third-world and world-leading nations. A lesson learned is also introduced for the design of structures with the consideration of permanent ground deformation to mitigate the damage caused by earthquakes incorporating the effect of permanent deformation on structures.</p>

Abstract:Seismic design spectra,which can represent the ground motion load,are the basis of engineering aseismatic design of structures.Firstly,the evolution of the seismic design spectra at home and abroad is reviewed,achievements in the theory of response spectrum and the seismic design of structures are pointed out.Secondly,questions involved in design spectra of earthquake action provisions in main countries and regions are analyzed, concept of binormalized response spectrum and the theory of uniform design spectrum are introduced.Lastly,suggestions of development guidelines and of future research,as well as limitations for the seismic design spectra are put forward.

Abstract:Based on analyses of the share of documents of structural geology and tectonics in the GeoRef system over 100 years in the last century, and the historical change of international (31 years) and domestic (16 years) document counts of various topics in structural geology and tectonics, the position of structural geology and tectonics in the geosciences is evaluated and the major advaces in fields of plate tectonics, continental dynamics and global dynamics are reviewed. Our attention mainly focuses on the advances in studies of structural analysis, deformation mechanisms and rheology of rocks, contractional tectonics and late- and post-orogenic extensional collapse in orogens, large-scale strike-slip faults and indentation-extrusion tectonics, active tectonics and natural hazards. The relationships of structural geology and tectonics with petrology and geochronology are also discussed in terms of intersection of scientific disciplines. Finally, some suggestions are proposed for the further development of structural geology and tectonics in China.

Abstract:By means of investigation on serious damages due to 5·12 Wenchuan Earthquake,it discussed detailed different seismic damage conditions and reasons of buildings in different seismic areas,and presented task to be solved in the future.The investigation results were found that there was less seismic damage in Chengdu,but in Dujiangyan,Mianzu,Beichuan,Yingxiu which were damaged more seriously,especially before 1990's pre-cast floor brick-concrete structure housing whose seismic damages were very serious,and most of them were faced to collapsed and no method to repair.Compared with 1990's buildings,there were less seismic damage after 2000 designed by new norms,and it concluded that codes for seismic design were basically satisfied the purpose of seismic fortification.

Abstract:The article summarizes the researches on mitigating earthquake disasters of the past four years in China. The study of earthquake disasters’ quantification shows that the losses increase remarkably when population concentrates in urban area and social wealth increase. The article also summarizes some new trends of studying earthquake disasters’ mitigation, which are from seismic hazard to seismic risk, from engineering disaster to social disaster and introduces the community-centered approach.

Abstract:China suffers lots for frequency occurred earthquake,since then China government has accumulated a wealth of experience for post-disaster emergency management.The authors conducted a case study for recently happened Yushu Earthquake emergency management.Sixty-nine local residents,local public officials,wounded and social workers report their experience of post-disaster emergency management. Positive experiences,such as,government rapid response,well prepared response plan,and support from all kinds of social forces,and suggestions for improvement,such as,effectively managing and delivering fund and materials,ensuring long-term clinical treatments for the wounded,social security network construct during local rebuilding,were all discussed.

Abstract:Electric power grids play an important role in the smooth functioning of modern society as many essential services required in our daily life depend on the electricity. Many cities in China are located in the earthquakeprone regions. If an earthquake occurs, it may cause extensive damage to power facilities and lead to a blackout, which will further affect electricity-depended critical services and result in huge economic loss. The seismic performance studies on electric power grids in the literature have been extensively reviewed from four aspects: seismic scenario generation, component fragility modeling, system-level functionality simulation, and seismic performance assessment and enhancement. Note that the performance of electric power grids can be measured from different perspectives, such as vulnerability, reliability and risk, this review has been mainly conducted from the resilience perspective. Finally, existing problems in the literature have been concluded and several directions for future work have been also provided.
