Abstract:To assess the current prevalence of infertility and the uptake of medical care among couples of reproductive age in China. Population-based cross-sectional study. A large-scale population-based cross-sectional study was conducted from February 2010 to November 2011 in 8 provinces/municipalities in northern and eastern China.Out of 25,270 approached couples, 18,571 (response rate 74%) were interviewed in a face to face interview using a structured questionnaire. Among women ‘at risk’ of pregnancy, the overall prevalence of infertility was 15.5% (2,680/17,275), of which 9.5% was primary infertility and 6.0% was secondary infertility. Among 10,742 women actively attempting to become pregnant, the prevalence of infertility was 25.0% with 2,680/10,742 (primary infertility 15.3%; secondary infertility 9.7%, respectively). Only 55.2% (1,915/3,470) of women who failed to achieve pregnancy in the last 12 months had sought medical help. Most of the couples who sought medical help did so through a general hospital (n=1,467, 76%), and diagnoses were tubal infertility (n=451, 24.9%), unexplained infertility (n=387, 21.4%), male infertility (n=319, 17.6%), ovulatory disorder (n=239, 13.2%) and endometriosis (n=46, 2.5%) while 20.4% (n=370) had not yet been classified. The majority of couples received non-ART fertility treatment (65.0%, n=1076), which included ovulation monitoring (23.0%, n=381), ovulation induction (23.4%, n=388) and surgery of womb or appendix (18.6%, n=307), while intrauterine insemination (5%, n=82) and IVF/ICSI (4.6%, n=76) occurred less frequent. At the moment of the survey, most couples (93.55%, n=1,146) undergoing treatment had not conceived successfully. Among couples of reproductive age in China, the prevalence of infertility was 25%. Almost half of the couples experiencing infertility had not sought medical help.
Distortions in Period TFR and Improvements on Its Adjustment

Abstract:Tempo-adjustment TFR proposed by Bongaarts and Feeney has resulted in extensive discussions and new trials for improvement in its measurement.This paper outlines the major theoretical debates pertaining to this method and the new achievements in improving the indicators ever since.This approach has been extended to period life expectancy and nuptiality rate.The paper briefly discusses the important findings by Yamaguchi and Beppu and their innovative solutions in adjusting period total fertility rate.In particular,the latest study by Bongaarts and Sobotka is reviewed in the paper,which proposed a demographic explanation for the recent rise in European fertility with a new indicator,tempo-and parity-adjusted total fertility.There was a paramount role of diminishing tempo and parity composition effects in explaining the recent rise in TFRs.This paper concludes with some comments on the improvement in period adjusted indicators and discusses the issues needed for further consideration.

Abstract:This paper proposes a simple method that analytically links the parameters α and β, which are not demographically interpretableand measurable in the Brass Relational Gompertz Fertility Model, with demographic measures of median age and interquartile range. We also extend the Brass model that deals only with age-specific fertility to age-parity-specific fertility, first marriage, divorce, remarriage, and leaving the parental home. The method has been successfully tested by fittings to 180 reliable observed demographic schedules in various countries and periods, and to nearly 10,000simulated schedules with various combinations of possible values (including the extremes) of α and β. Our proposed method that uses median age and interquartile range instead of α and β as input is useful in the population and family household projections. It releases the traditionalunrealistic assumption in population projections that the curve of the fertility schedule moves to the right or left in a parallel way. Instead, using our proposed method, one can assume that the demographic events would be delayed or advanced, while the curve becomes more spread or more concentrated, or, more specifically, assume that young people delay the events more than the older persons do, or vice versa. Our proposed method is also useful to formulate assumptions on future demographic trends for purposes of policy analysisand planning. It can be used to indirectly estimate demographic schedules when the detailed age-specific data are not currently available, which is useful for developing countries and sub-region studies in developed countries. A crucial point for a successful application of the method is that the standard schedule chosen can capture the general pattern of the demographic process in the population under study.
Estimation on Fertility Level in China 2000-2010:Preliminary Study Based on the 2010 Population Census

Abstract:This paper estimates fertility level in China during 2000-2010 by using the population-shift algorithm and the survival backward method based on the 2010 population census,and then compares the results with those of the census and surveys over the years.The results show that the 2000 census undercounted 20.56 million people aged 0-14,among which the females were much more than the males,and the children aged 1 and 7 were more undercounted than other age groups.The number of reproductive-age-women increased by 7.86% in the past decade,and women aged 35-49,a lower reproductive group,increased by more compared with the other groups of reproductive age.The total fertility rate experienced first from reducing to rising then being settled with a slight downward tendency.The average total fertility rate was 1.48 over the years of 2000-2009.The study indicates that undercount of far younger population in the 2000 census would not necessarily lead to the severe underestimation on fertility rate over the past decade,and the average gap of the total fertility rate between estimations by this study and the results from the census and surveys is 0.09.Under the influences of low fertility rate,shrinking and aging reproductive-age-women,change of age structure in China would be sharp in the future,and an effective policy response would be necessary and urgent.

Abstract:This paper analyses the reasons of the notable "pick up"of the fertility in recent years shown by the 2006 national population and family planning survey based upon the published summary data of this survey.Through discussing the methods used by this survey, analyzing the sample composition,and comparing them to those from the 2005 national 1% population sam pling survey,it turns out that the 2006 survey sample is badly biased,which over-draw the women newly married and just delivered,but under-draw the women at young age and unmarried.Therefore,the"pick up" of the fertility in the recent year shown by this survey is resulted by its sampling bias, and such statistics cannot represent the situation of population.This study also shows the differences in levels and age-patterns between the total fertility rate and the total married fertility rate,and argues that there is little comparability between the two indexes.

Abstract:China has experienced an unprecedented fertility decline since the early 1970s. Available data show that the total fertility rate has fallen from about 6 children per woman to approximately 1.5 children in the past four decades. This change has not only greatly altered China's demographic map, but also incited considerable discussion on the quality of China's recent fertility data and the impact of China's traditional culture on people's fertility behaviour in the past and present. This paper further examines China's recent fertility changes with a particular attention being directed to the following questions: China's below and far below replacement fertility since the early 1990s; the reliability of China's recent fertility data; and some historical and cultural factors that contribute to China's rapid fertility decline.
A Demographic Decomposition of the Recent Increase in Crude Birth-Rates in China

Abstract:The triple standardization method was used to estimate the separate effect of changes in age structure marriage pattern and marital fertility on the crude birth rate in China. The decomposition method is described. Data were from the 1982 Census the 1987 1% Population Survey and the 1988 2/1000 Fertility and Contraceptive Survey. Single-year age data for 1981 and 1987 were estimated nationally and for each province based on the 1982 population census and life tables. Single-year ages of both sexes in 1984 were estimated from 1987 survey data and life tables. Age-specific fertility rates are given from the 1988 2/1000 Survey. The 1984 birth rate was computed separately and comparability with 1987 data was obtained by the same calculation. Discussed are 3 components of recent fertility change data methods and data sources 1981 and 1987 compared and 1987 and 1984 compared. It is concluded that changes in age structure and declining age at marriage are primarily responsible for the increase in the crude birth rate for the country as a whole and for most provinces. The increase in marital fertility is much less important. Chinas population growth is not considered in light of this study to the out of control again or to be a reversal of trends in marital fertility. Large birth cohorts in the 1960s entered their childbearing years in the 1980s. The New Marriage Law legalized a minimum age at marriage of 20 years instead of 23 years and this accounts for the declining age at marriage rather than a weakening of the family planning program in China. The civil registration of marriage data between 1984-87 had an impact of 5% on the crude birth rate in 1984 compared with an impact of 13.2% from age structure and 7.6% from marriage pattern. The small increase in marital fertility is explained by the relaxation of fertility control policies in rural areas to allow for a 2nd child with appropriate spacing. Compliance with the birth spacing policy was better in 1987 than in 1984 when the policy was introduced. Administrative decentralization has also loosened policy control. It is projected from the recent 1990 census that the number of women in the childbearing ages will be 322 million for each year between 1991-95 (an 8.1% increase over 1986-90 and a 16.2% increase in the peak childbearing years of 20-29). Promoting late marriage and late childbearing will help to curb population growth.

Abstract:There has been a big gap between the fertility statistics released by the government and the real population found in population surveys.Such a situation reflects the puzzle generated after China stepped in the era of low fertility.In practice,survey on birth and fertility rates has been mired in a strange statistical trap featured by ignorance of investigative results and reliance on subjective judgment.Continuation of that phenomenon will not only lead to erroneous statistics regarding the total population and structure of age,but also cause ignorance of the risks posed by aging and could mislead the future understanding regarding long-term population growth trend and decision-making.

Abstract:Abstract Background The period fertility in China has declined to very low levels, and the completed cohort fertility rate (CFR) has also decreased significantly. However, the exact fertility rate remains controversial. While the tempo effect has played a significant role in China’s period fertility decline, child underreporting has to be taken into consideration in China’s fertility research. Methods By using the census data from 1982 to 2010, and the 1% population sample survey data from 1995 to 2015, we systematically analyzed China’s fertility and its trends since the 1980s using period fertility measures, adjusted period fertility measures, cohort fertility measures, and indirect estimation methods. Results The results show that marriage postponement significantly affects the TFR decline. Even after eliminating the tempo and parity structure effect, the adjusted TFR has fallen below 1.5, and the first-order fertility rate dropped to 0.9 in 2015. The CFR for women aged 45–49 declined from 5.37 in 1982 to 1.62 in 2015 mainly because of a decrease in fourth and higher-order births from 1982 to 1990, a decrease in second and third births from 1990 to 2000, and a decrease in second births from 2000 to 2015. Indirect estimation methods yielded a TFR in the range of 1.5–1.6 for the period 2000–2010 and an average TFR of 1.49 for the period 2011–2020. Conclusions The traditional norm of universal marriage and childbearing for Chinese women is changing. China’s fertility has been steadily declining, as measured by both period and cohort indicators. Following the historical change, fertility may continue to decline even after introducing the universal three-child policy in China in 2021.

Abstract:During the 11th Five-year Plan (2006-2010), the total fertility rate of the mainland of China was 1.481 and was stable with a slight decline, exhibiting a spatial pattern of moderately low fertility in the central and western regions, very low fertility in the east and extremely low fertility in the northeast. Except for a rebound in a few provinces and regions with extremely low fertility rates, the ratio of actual fertility rates to policy fertility rates is still falling. The reduced fertility rate is mainly driven by development, notably the proportion of the total population represented by the exuberantly fertile women of child-bearing age and their greater urbanization, growing level of non-agricultural employment and outflow from rural areas, as well as the assimilative effect of urban production, lifestyles and cultural concepts upon the agricultural population. Development has catalyzed an irreversible trend of declining fertility; existing fertility policy has proven insufficient to keep fertility rates stable at reasonably low levels. Policy-based rebounds may emerge in urban areas and the east and northeast, where family planning policy has been better implemented; on the other hand, a non-policy-based rebound may have been released. In the central and western rural areas, multiple births occur on average among only 4.12 percent of the younger generation of women. As fertility policy is adjusted and improved, fertility rebounds in transitional fertility policy adjustment can be effectively regulated through a gradual strategy which will not provoke a sharp rebound. The time is ripe for China to conduct a nationally unified adjustment of the existing fertility policy.

Abstract:China has had a low fertility rate for about 20 years,but such an important transition has long beenneglected.The sixth national census in 2010 once again confirms that the country's birth and fertilitylevels have been badly over-estimated while population ageing has been seriously under-estimated.Asa result,China has once again missed its population policy targets.Population simulation andprojection indicate that population age structure rather than its size has turned to become the primarydemographic challenge for China by the middle of this century and population ageing is accelerating.China is at a critical moment in terms of population evolution.The highly biased policy promotion anderroneous estimation have misled policymakers and caused problems such as low fertility and lack ofchildren and excessive ageing in the future.

Abstract:An analysis of the composition, characteristics, and vital processes of the population of rural mainland China was undertaken using data collected as part of a study of land utilization carried out by Naking University in 1929-1931. These data have been reappraised using techniques for demographic analysis of faulty data which shows a consistent picture of the Chinese farmer of high morta moderate fertility, and early and universal marriage. Estimates of the singulate mean age at marriage was 17.5 for females and 21.3 for males. Fewer than 1 in 1000 women and 3 in 1000 men never married. The reported parity of older women was only slightly above 5, which disputes the very large historical family size that has been imputed to the chinese. There was a life expectancy of less than 25 years for each sex, and very high infant mortality. These characteristics were of sufficient persistence to have generated a stable age distribution.

Abstract:We show that the observed changes in the period tempo of fertility are biased and derive a new formula for adjusting such bias. We present illustrative applications of our proposed method to the cases of the United States and Taiwan. We then describe the relevance of adjustments of observed period fertility tempo for evaluating family planning programs aiming at delaying and reducing births to slow down population growth in developing countries. The work reported in this article also can be regarded as an extension of Ryder's basic translation equation. The extension provides a set of formulas expressing relationships of quantum-tempo between cohorts and periods under specified assumptions.

Abstract:The standard methods to calculate the Total Fertility Rate require the reliable age-specific fertility rate including birth data and the related age-specific women's population data. Historically, the number of births was often not counted according to the age of the mother, so it is difficult to estimate the historical total fertility rate with the standard methods. Many empirical methods have been proposed, but their application is limited to specific period and place. This paper deduces a new method for calculating the total fertility rate from the number of birth and the population of women at childbearing age, can be applied to most of cases. The relative error is usually less than 5%. It is easier to calculate TFR, and may be applied to obtain more TFRs for the history.

Abstract:Between 1970 and 1990, China experiencoed a rapid and sharp fertility decline-from total fertility rates of approximately six births to two. The degree to which Chinese fertility has continued to fall after 1990 is controversial. We use survey data from the 1997 National Population and Reproductive Health Survey and from the 2001 Reproductive Health and Family Planning Survey to document recent trends in Chinese fertility. Our estimates provide further evidence that China's fertility is well below-replacement level at the turn of the twenty-first century-with TFR levels of approximately 1.5 children per woman. Trends in parity-specific cohort fertility by age also suggest below replacement completed fertility for cohorts still in the childbearing years. In the article's second section, we identify key components of low period fertility in order to frame our discussion of two questions: 1) in what ways is Chinese low fertility different from/similar to that in other low-fertility countries ? And 2) what are the likely future trends in Chinese fertility ?.

Abstract:"The rationing of births in China after the 1979 announcement of the 'one child family policy' has been held responsible for the rapid decrease in Chinese fertility, whereas other observers have noted that parallel fertility declines occurred with voluntary behavior in other East and Southeast Asian countries. This paper assesses the joint contribution of local family planning and health programs, individual characteristics of women, and the development of their communities, as explanatory variables for Chinese fertility in rural areas of three provinces in 1985. Given the explicit quantitative reproductive goals of the government, an ordered Probit model for cumulative fertility is estimated for women age 15-34 and 35-49."

Abstract:China has already attained low fertility;however,there is uncertainty around the actual fertility.This paper summarizes classification and discussion of low fertility,and reviews methodological issues in estimating fertility or birth under-reporting.Using Bongaarts low fertility model,it is found that childbearing postponement had a significant depressing effect on China's total fertility rate;while the way in which son preference affects fertility shifted from multiple childbearing into sex-selective abortions,thus reducing fertility.Illustrative calculation shows that ignoring other factors depressing fertility would lead to exaggeration of the effect of birth under-reporting on fertility.Finally the paper discusses impact of migration on fertility in areas of origin,areas of destination and for China as a whole.

Impacts of Floating Population on Current Fertility in China

Abstract:Social change has been remarkably characterized by great waves of floating population under economic reform over the last three decades.However,it seems unclear how the floating population have had impacts on fertility.Based on data from the 2005 one percent population sampling survey,the obtained fertility rates of female floating population are much lower than those of their non-floating counterpart.Comparison of fertility between the two groups are carried out further by age pattern,by birth order,as well as by status of household registration.The paper concludes that floating movement do contribute to fertility decline.
