Abstract:Mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) are a kind of very complex distributed communication systems with wireless mobile nodes that can be freely and dynamically self-organized into arbitrary and temporary network topologies. MANETs inherit several limitations of wireless networks, meanwhile make new challenges arising from the specificity of MANETs, such as route failures, hidden terminals and exposed terminals. When TCP is applied in a MANET environment, a number of tough problems have to be dealt with. In this paper, a comprehensive survey on this dynamic field is given. Specifically, for the first time all factors impairing TCP performance are identified based on network protocol hierarchy, i.e., lossy wireless channel at the physical layer; excessive contention and unfair access at the MAC layer; frail routing protocol at the network layer, the MAC layer and the network layer related mobile node; unfit congestion window size at the transport layer and the transport layer related asymmetric path. How these factors degrade TCP performance is clearly explained. Then, based on how to alleviate the impact of each of these factors listed above, the existing solutions are collected as comprehensively as possible and classified into a number of categories, and their advantages and limitations are discussed. Based on the limitations of these solutions, a set of open problems for designing more robust solutions is suggested.

Abstract:This paper proposes a cluster-based multi-path routing in MANET (CBMRP). It distributes traffic among diverse multiple paths to avoid congestion, optimize bandwidth used and improve the sharing rate of channel. It uses clustering’s hierarchical structure diverse to decrease routing control overhead and improve the networks scalability. This algorithm is implemented on the OPNET environment, and the results show that the algorithm can balance the load of the network and deal with the change of the network topology effectively, and also improve the reliability, throughput and stability of the network efficiently.

Abstract:In general, a network that possesses numerous free or autonomous nodes is proffered as a Mobile Ad hoc Network (MANET). In this, to send along receive data, every single node acts as a router. The entire network's performance is degraded with the existence of faulty Sensor Nodes (SNs); thus, to obtain better Quality of Service (QoS), the detection of faulty SNs is highly significant. Therefore, an Efficient Node Localization and Failure Node Detection in a MANET environment is proposed here. Here, first, the nodes are initialized. Next, distance estimation, position computation, and optimal localization are the '3' steps utilizing which the SNs are localized. After that, via the network, the data packets are broadcasted. The best path is regarded for transmitting the data packet efficiently. It includes '2' steps for this; first, Failure Probability (FP) calculation; second, estimation of error calculation. Lastly, by employing the Soft Taxicab Poisson Binomial-Reference Point Group Mobility Model (STPB-RPGM), the Faulty Nodes (FNs) are detected. In this, the Taxicab Distance (TD)-Fuzzy C-Means (TD-FCM) is utilized to detect the group members along with by utilizing the Poisson Binomial Distribution (PBD)-Emperor Penguin Optimization (PB-EPO), the group leader is selected. Consequently, the failure along with the non-failure node is detected effectually by the STPB-RPGM. Lastly, the proposed STPB-RPGM's outcomes are analogized with the prevailing algorithms. The experiential outcomes displayed that the faulty SNs are detected with higher accurateness in the proposed methodology; thus, it surpassed the other state-of-the-art methodologies. The findings indicate that we were able to get 96.8% accuracy, 96.46% sensitivity, 96.88% precision, 97.12% specificity, 96.64% F-measure, and 96.46% recall using the STPB-RPGM. In 0.619 s, the TD-FCM finishes the clustering operation. The benefit of this investigation is that, compared to other clustering algorithms, the localization strategy decreases the number of dead nodes in data transmission, and the TD-FCM completes the clustering process quickly.

Abstract:Ad-Hoc networks are collections of mobile nodes communicating using wireless media without any fixed infrastructure. Minimal configuration and quick deployment make Ad-Hoc networks suitable for emergency situations like natural disasters or military conflicts. The current Ad-Hoc networks can only support either high mobility or high transmission rate at a time because they employ static approaches in their routing schemes. However, due to the continuous expansion of the Ad-Hoc network size, node-mobility and transmission rate, the development of new adaptive and dynamic routing schemes has become crucial. In this paper we propose a new routing scheme to Support high transmission rates and high node-mobility simultaneously in a big Ad-Hoc network, by combining a new proposed packet-pheromone-based approach with the Hint Based Probabilistic Protocol (HBPP) for congestion avoidance with dynamic path selection in packet forwarding process. Because of using the available feedback information, the proposed algorithm does not introduce any additional overhead. The extensive simulation-based analysis conducted in this paper indicates that the proposed algorithm offers small packet-latency and achieves a significantly higher delivery probability in comparison with the available Hint-Based Probabilistic Protocol (HBPP).

Abstract:The emerging need for mobile ad hoc networks and secured data transmission phase is of crucial importance depending upon the environments like military. In this paper, a new way to improve the reliability of message transmission is presented. In the open collaborative MANET environment, any node can maliciously or selfishly disrupt and deny communication of other nodes. Dynamic changing topology makes it hard to determine the adversary nodes that affect the communication in MANET. An SMT protocol provides a way to secure message transmission by dispersing the message among several paths with minimal redundancy. The multiple routes selected are known as APS -Active Path Set. This paper describes a technique for fault discovery process to identify Byzantine failures which include nodes that drop, modify, or mis-route packets in an attempt to disrupt the routing service. An adaptive probing technique detects a malicious link through binary search and according to the nodes behavior, these links are avoided in the active path by multiplicatively increasing their weights. The proposed scheme provides secure communication even with increased number of adversaries.

Abstract:A novel architecture for connectionless packet-based communication in wireless mobile cellular system is studied. A certain number of Data Relaying Stations (DRS), which can relay packets from one cell to another in a manner similar to the Ad-hoc multi-hop relaying mechanism, are placed in the cellular system to balance traffic load between neighboring cells. The placement of DRS is carefully studied to provide a full relaying coverage of the cell area with the minimum number of DRSs. According to a distributed delay-sensitive relaying control strategy, mobile stations (MS) can locally decide whether to divert their traffic to neighboring cells without any central control. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed method can significantly improve the system throughput and resource utilization and reduce the average packet delay.

Abstract:Although clustering is a convenient framework to enable traffic control and service support in Mobile Ad hoc NETworks (MANETs), it is seldom adopted in practice due to the additional traffic overhead it leads to for the resource limited ad hoc network. In order to address this problem, we proposed a loop-based approach to combine clustering and routing. By employing loop topologies, topology information is disseminated with a loop instead of a single node, which provides better robustness, and the nature of a loop that there are two paths between each pair of nodes within a loop suggests smart route recovery strategy. Our approach is composed of setup procedure, regular procedure and recovery procedure to achieve clustering, routing and emergent route recovering.

Abstract:The cluster-based comparison diagnosis algorithm was proposed in this paper as an algorithm diagnosing the faults of application layer. By making use of the concentrative control function of the clusterheads in hierarchical ad-hoc networks, not only the process of diagnosis was optimized, but also correct diagnosis for all mobile hosts could be implemented as changing network topology was presented. The correctness of the algorithm was proved and its performance was analyzed. Simulation results indicate the algorithm breaks the limitation of the comparison-based fault diagnosis algorithm that the network topology cannot change during the process of diagnosis, and comparing with the comparison-based fault diagnosis algorithm, it results in much smaller system overhead.

Abstract:A mobile ad hoc network (MANET) is a collection of autonomous nodes that communicate with each other by forming a multi-hop radio network and maintaining connections in a decentralized manner. Security remains a major challenge for these networks due to their features of open medium, dynamically changing topologies, reliance on cooperative algorithms,absence of centralized monitoring points, and lack of clear lines of defense. Most of the routing protocols for MANETs are thus vulnerable to various types of attacks. Ad hoc on-demand distance vector routing (AODV) is a very popular routing algorithm. However, it is vulnerable to the well-known black hole attack, where a malicious node falsely advertises good paths to a destination node during the route discovery process. This attack becomes more sever when a group of malicious nodes cooperate each other. In this paper, a defense mechanism is presented against a coordinated attack by multiple black hole nodes in a MANET. The simulation carried out on the proposed scheme has produced results that demonstrate the effectiveness of the mechanism in detection of the attack while maintaining a reasonable level of throughput in the network.

Abstract:In multi-hop mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs),mobile nodes cooperate with each other without using any infrastructure such as access points or base stations. Security remains a major challenge for these networks due to their features of open medium, dynamically changing topologies, reliance on cooperative algorithms, absence of centralized monitoring points, and lack of clear lines of defense. Among the various attacks to which MANETs are vulnerable, malicious packet dropping attack is very common where a malicious node can partially degrade or completely disrupt communication in the network by consistently dropping packets. In this paper, a mechanism for detection of packet dropping attack is presented based on cooperative participation of the nodes in a MANET. The redundancy of routing information in an ad hoc network is utilized to make the scheme robust so that it works effectively even in presence of transient network partitioning and Byzantine failure of nodes. The proposed scheme is fully cooperative and thus more secure as the vulnerabilities of any election algorithm used for choosing a subset of nodes for cooperation are absent. Simulation results show the effectiveness of the protocol.

Abstract:In multi-hop wireless systems, the need for cooperation among nodes to relay each other's packets exposes them to a wide range of security attacks. A particularly devastating attack is the wormhole attack, where a malicious node records control traffic at one location and tunnels it to another compromised node, possibly far away, which replays it locally. Routing security in ad hoc networks is often equated with strong and feasible node authentication and lightweight cryptography. Unfortunately, the wormhole attack can hardly be defeated by crypto graphical measures, as wormhole attackers do not create separate packets. They simply replay packets already existing on the network, which pass the cryptographic checks. Existing works on wormhole detection have often focused on detection using specialized hardware, such as directional antennas, etc. In this paper, we present a cluster based counter-measure for the wormhole attack, that alleviates these drawbacks and efficiently mitigates the wormhole attack in MANET. Simulation results on MATLab exhibit the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm in detecting wormhole attacks.

Abstract:This research addresses critical gaps in Mobile Ad hoc Networks (MANETs) by proposing a hybrid secure cluster-based routing algorithm, focusing on enhancing network security, robustness, and reliability through multipath routing. Methodologically, the approach integrates Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) for optimal path routing and Emperor Penguin Optimization (EPO) for clustering, introducing a novel combination for efficient cluster head selection. A novel contribution lies in the development of a prediction technique utilizing a trust assessment algorithm to calculate direct trust ratings at each node, incorporating fuzzy values between zero and one. Trust values are further influenced by node performance, adding a dynamic dimension to the trust evaluation process. Key novelties include the emphasis on energy efficiency, network longevity, remaining energy, security level, bandwidth, and packet delivery ratio as evaluation criteria. The proposed CNN-EPO model demonstrates superior results compared to traditional routing protocols, achieving a remarkable 95% energy efficiency, a heightened security level of 99%, and a throughput reaching up to 8 Mbps. Additionally, the Packet Delivery Ratio (PDR) attains close to 99% and routing overhead remains below 0.5, ensuring efficiency in challenging network scenarios with 50 adversaries. In summary, this research contributes a comprehensive solution to MANET challenges, introducing a novel hybrid routing algorithm, incorporating advanced methodologies for path optimization and clustering. These outcomes highlight how important the suggested strategy is to improve the existing state of the art in MANETs.

Abstract:Summary The ability of mobile ad hoc networks (MANET) to be used as communication tools in a variety of industries, including healthcare, the military, smart traffic, and smart cities, has drawn special consideration. Traditional Manet's multicast routing methods seem to be inappropriate to massive with Adaptive systems because the problem is NP‐complete, resulting in an enchanting QoS restrictions. In order to conquer that the paper proficiently introduces the Conglomerate Crumb Horde Formicary Meta‐Heuristic (CCHFMO) with Asymmetrical Meander Diffie‐Hellman (AMDH) to tackle the major obstacles are multicast routing problems and lack of data protection. Initially, the fusion of crumb horde optimization (CHO) and formicary optimization (FO) is exploited to strengthen QoS limitations and reduce QoS data loss. However, the massive and dynamic nature of the network with the combination of more QoS restrictions, deficient security has become extremely difficult. Therefore, the research work establishes the asymmetrical meander Diffie‐Hellman (AMDH) to significantly improve performance and concealment while ensuring channel security during data transfer. Finally, the results demonstrated that by employing the novel optimization approaches, the MANET can increase data protection while still achieving high transmission rates and sophistication of communication. As a consequence, it adequately explicates the article to improve QoS performances.

Abstract:Ad hoc networks are self-organizing multi-hop systems consisting wireless nodes which can communicate with each other without pre-existing infrastructure. Clustering has evolved as an important research topic in mobile ad hoc networks(MANETs) as it improves the system performance of MANET, in the presence of both mobility and a large number of mobile terminals. In this paper, we propose a new clustering protocol for MANETs. The proposed protocol yields small number of multi-hop clusters with large size, so as to support large ad hoc networks. The proposed protocol utilizes routing information to adjust the topology of the clusters so as to reduce the overhead of the cluster maintenance and extend the life time of the cluster head. The objective of the clustering strategy is to achieve scalability and efficient routing. The simulation results show that the proposed protocol provides good performance in terms of the number of formed clusters and the percentage of connected nodes.
SMART: A Strengthened Model of Access Router Tree for Multihoming in Nested Mobile Network

Abstract:Load balance and failure tolerance are the crucial issues for multihomed mobile network. However, existing solutions are still far away from our expectation. In this paper, we first analyze the problems of multihoming in a nested mobile network and review their existing schemes in the eye of load balance and failure tolerance. Then we give a strengthened model of access router tree, where a novel and comprehensive metric for best path recognition is proposed to realize the load balance. In order to enhance the failure tolerance of the system, we further propose fast handover algorithms which can be used when burst access failure appears. We perform extensive simulations to evaluate the proposed scheme. Results indicate that comprehensive load balance and failure tolerance can be achieved. Moreover, our proposed handover algorithm achieves least latency of package transmission compared with its existing counterparts.

Abstract:In this paper, we develop a trust based security protocol based on a cross layer approach which attains confidentiality and authentication of packets in both routing and link layers of MANETs. In the first phase of the protocol, we design a trust based packet forwarding scheme for detecting and isolating the malicious nodes using the routing layer information. It uses trust values to favor packet forwarding by maintaining a trust counter for each node. A node is punished or rewarded by decreasing or increasing the trust counter. If the trust counter value falls below a trust threshold, the corresponding intermediate node is marked as malicious. In the next phase of the protocol, we provide link layer security using the CBCX mode of authentication and encryption. By simulation results, we show that the proposed cross layer security protocol achieves high packet delivery ratio while attaining low delay and overhead.

Abstract:Multipath routing can adapt to traffic changes, increase reliability and enhance the Quality of Service support in communication networks. This routing algorithm has been recognized as one of the salient features in Mobile Ad hoc Networks (MANETs). However, existing multipath routing protocols are often practically infeasible due to its security venerability if they suffer from attacks in MANETs, such as repudiation attacks, Denial of Service attacks. In this paper we propose a novel secure multipath routing protocol, referred to as SMRP, and investigate its feasibility and performance. SMRP applies a new heuristic algorithm increasing the number of disjoint paths and a smart authentication mechanism to enhance the security against the attacks in MANETs. The performance results from extensive analysis and experiments show that SMRP can efficiently enhance the security in MANETs while preserving the low overhead of computing and communication. Abstract:For improving the efficiency and the reliability of the opportunistic routing algorithm, in this paper, we propose the cross-layer and reliable opportunistic routing algorithm (CBRT) for Mobile Ad Hoc Networks, which introduces the improved efficiency fuzzy logic and humoral regulation inspired topology control into the opportunistic routing algorithm. In CBRT, the inputs of the fuzzy logic system are the relative variance (rv) of the metrics rather than the values of the metrics, which reduces the number of fuzzy rules dramatically. Moreover, the number of fuzzy rules does not increase when the number of inputs increases. For reducing the control cost, in CBRT, the node degree in the candidate relays set is a range rather than a constant number. The nodes are divided into different categories based on their node degree in the candidate relays set. The nodes adjust their transmission range based on which categories that they belong to. Additionally, for investigating the effection of the node mobility on routing performance, we propose a link lifetime prediction algorithm which takes both the moving speed and moving direction into account. In CBRT, the source node determines the relaying priorities of the relaying nodes based on their utilities. The relaying node which the utility is large will have high priority to relay the data packet. By these innovations, the network performance in CBRT is much better than that in ExOR, however, the computation complexity is not increased in CBRT.
