Abstract:Purpose This paper aims to present an underwater climbing robot for wiping off marine life from steel pipes (e.g. jackets of oil platforms). The self-adaption mechanism that consists of a passive roll joint and combined magnet adhesion units provides the robot with better mobility and stability. Design/methodology/approach Adhesion requirements are achieved by analyses of falling and slipping. The movement status on pipes is analyzed to design the passive roll joint. The optimized structure parameters of the combined magnet adhesion unit are achieved by simulations. An approximation method is established to simplify the simulations conditions, and the simulations are conducted in two steps to save time effectively. Findings The self-adaption mechanism has expected performance that the robot can travel on pipes in different directions with high mobility. Meanwhile, the robot can clean continuous region of underwater pipes’ surface of offshore platforms. Practical implications The proposed underwater robot is needed by offshore oil platforms as their jackets require to be cleaned periodically. Compared with traditional maintenance by divers, it is more efficient, economic and safety. Originality/value Due to the specific self-adaption mechanism, the robot has good mobility and stability in any directions on pipes with different diameters. The good performance of striping attachments from pipes makes the underwater robot be a novel solution to clean steel pipes.

Abstract:The overall design of a high efficiency and high precision centering device for ship pipe welding was put forward. To ensure the pipe centering accuracy,in this device,same direction tapered tube and steel balls were used to lock the inner wall of the pipe. To improve efficiency,in this device,hydraulic cylinder was used to provide power. Using finite element analysis software AN-SYS,the structure was analyzed,and the feasibility of the device was verified through tests.

Abstract:On the basis of national and international industrial robot's study productions.Given the sturcture and properties requirements of the manipulator,3D modeling and performance analysis based on the SolidWorks and ANSYS were utilized to optimize the dimension as well as the structure of 50 kg industrial robotic arms which were newly developed.These two methods efficiently resolve the problem during the product design processing and greatly shorten the design period.It solves the problem of limited design and increases industrial robot's design methods to a certain extent.

Abstract:A new bionic robot with buoyancy as the supporting force that is inspired by the water strider has been presented in this paper. When the water strider moves on the surface of water, it can form an ellipse-like spatial stroke trajectory which is seldom imitated by the stroke mechanism. The stroke mechanism which consists of a linear guide and rotation coupling mechanism is installed on the novel buoyancy-supported water strider robot, which can form an ellipse-like spatial stroke trajectory similar to a real water strider. The force generated by the stroke leg could be mainly in the horizontal plane. which is favorable to the stability of the water strider robot. Finally, it is proved that the stroke mechanism can produce an ellipse-like spatial trajectory in practical application and the robot has good mobility in the experimental results. The independent power supply is placed on the robot which also can be controlled by a remote-control equipment.

Abstract:In this paper, according to the design technical requirements, the completion of the structural scheme design of compound-driven in-pipe robot, the establishment of the cam active support diameter reducing mechanism mathematical model, obtain the relationship curve between its parameters, and completed the optimization of the cam contour. The resident performance of the robot in the pipeline is analyzed, and the feasibility of the robot's active resident in the pipeline is verified. This paper explores the relationship between the running speed of the robot in the pipeline and the leakage clearance under the condition of the fluid driven, and through the analysis and calculation of the different fluid velocity in the pipe, the reasonable range of the leakage clearance of the robot can be determined, for this range the robot can run smoothly. It has important theoretical value and engineering practical significance for the design and practical application of compound-driven pipeline robot.

Abstract:As the core of pipeline internal working condition detection system, the pipeline robot’s performance has become the biggest obstacle to the development of pipeline robots. This article addresses the complex operating conditions of changing the diameter of industrial piping systems. An active spiral driven adjustable pipe robot model powered by hydraulic system was proposed. In this model, the variable diameter adjustment system with the parallel hydraulic system as the core realizes the robot’s self-adaptation and angle difference adjustment in the variable-diameter pipeline. The drive wheel hydraulic pressure limiting system is used to limit the slipping and idling of the drive wheels under complex conditions to ensure that the system has a stable driving force. The mechanism of adjusting the overall load capacity by controlling the rotation angle of the drive wheel realizes the conversion from the traditional drive to the screw drive. The research results lay a theoretical foundation for the performance improvement of the pipeline robot.

Abstract:In the pipeline industry, it is often necessary to monitor cracks and damage in pipelines, or need to clean the inside of the pipeline regularly, or collect adhesive on the inner wall of the pipe, but the pipe is too narrow and difficult for humans to enter, it is necessary to use a pipe machine to complete the work. In this paper, a newly designed screw-driven in-pipe inspection robot (IPIR) is proposed. Compared with common robots, this robot innovatively designs adapting mechanism. The robot can not only adapt to the change of the inner diameter size of the pipeline by using the bionic principle and the deformation characteristics of flexible components but also can pass smoothly in the horizontal/oblique/vertical pipelines and has a certain ability to cross obstacles. In addition, it can transmit images of the inner wall of the pipeline wirelessly for data analysis. Finally, through theoretical analysis and prototype construction, the performance of the robot is verified. The results show that the prototype robot can not only smoothly pass through the acrylic pipe with inner diameter of 120–138 mm but also pass through boss with a height of 3 mm.

Abstract:In order to make the robot adapt to various complex working conditions and weather conditions, and expand its application scope and scenarios, a new type of wheel-track compound structure robot is proposed, which has multi-motion mode and can realize the free switching between wheeled movement and wheel-track movement. Sprocket chain is used to drive the rotary movement of both sides of wheels of the robot, and the combination of dynamic and static seals is adopted to achieve the protection level of the robot IP65. In this article.the robot's movement patterns are analyzed, the mechanical analysis of the most representative function of climbing stairs under the wheel-track movement mode is carried out, the traction and supporting force of the robot in each stage of climbing stairs is obtained, the theoretical basis for the stability discrimination of robot is provided when the robot is in contact with stairs, and the design of robot structure and control system driving device is optimized. The results show that the robot can climb stairs, surmount obstacles, climb slopes and walk upright, which proves the rationality of the structure design and the stability of the robot under various complex working conditions.

Abstract:Pipelines have become one of the most important infrastructures in the city. Over time, they are prone to aging, cracks, corrosion, and the demand for regular inspection is gradually increasing. Robotic solutions are effective methods for in-pipe inspection. However, existing In-pipe Inspection Robots (IPIR) require that the inner diameter of the pipe is fixed in the application scenarios, and need extra labor to control the robot and handle the cable. In this work, we design and develop a deformable robot to adapt to pipes with different inner diameters. Specifically, the passive elastic hinge is used by us to make the robot fully in contact with the pipe, generating enough friction to ensure that the robot is attached to the inner wall of the pipe. An edge device is deployed on the robot, generating velocity commands of wheels through the data from Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU), which eliminates the need for external devices. Experimental results demonstrate that the robot can move in horizontal and vertical pipelines, as well as traverse through pipe joints and scenarios where there is dirty or small obstacle.

Abstract:In order to solve the problem of motion interference when the pipe robot pass through the elbow, the robot can fit the different pipe diameter when the robot pass through the geometric irregular pipe, we design a screw-driven adaptive pipe robot under complex working conditions. The robot is mainly composed of a driving mechanism, a holding mechanism and an elastic mechanism. The design of the main structural transmission components are carried out by the technical requirements and the analysis of the movement state of the robot pass through the elbow. Simultaneously, we established three-dimensional solid modeling of the pipeline robot to verify that the mechanism can meet the speed ratios. The results show that the pipeline robot can pass the elbow without interference, which has certain diameter adaptability and obstacle clearance ability.

Abstract:Abstract Self-adapting pipeline robot is widely used in many industrial fields and the walking mechanism is its critical part. According to the actual dimensional demand of a certain pipeline and the requirement of self-adapting pipeline robot, a walking mechanism is designed based on the double-cross structure and modelled through utilizing 3D modeling software. The walking mechanism can adjust its size to adapt to pipeline with different diameters. The workbench can be kept in the center of the pipeline by optimization of size of the double-cross structure. There are two driving wheels in the bottom and one driving wheel in the top to constitute three-point type, which can improve the stability and load capacity of the robot. The H-type driving wheel is adopted to improve stability and reliability of the contact between the wheel and the guide. Through optimizing parameters of the double-cross structure, the designed walking mechanism can meet the requirement of the pipeline with diameters from 480mm to 600mm. Furthermore, constructions of the walking mechanism are modelled by the Solidworks modeling software, which can verify the feasibility of the design. Design and modeling of the walking mechanism are propitious to give technical support to maintenance and repair of the pipeline.

Abstract:Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part C: Journal of Mechanical Engineering Science, Ahead of Print. Addressing the challenges of limited passability and adaptability encountered by existing pipe robots in navigating through tee and four-way junction pipes, This article designs a pipe robot based on the principle of metamorphism. This robot is designed with a variable number of linkages, constituting the core of its system structure. Through this innovative approach, it achieves movement in diverse types of pipelines by altering its own structural configuration. Kinematic analysis is conducted using both the Denavit-Hartenberg (D-H) method and screw theory, providing expressions for the forward kinematics in terms of the robot's positional and attitudinal states, as well as geometric solutions for the inverse kinematics. Simulations conducted in MATLAB and ADAMS software demonstrate consistent postural changes of the robot, validating its design and capabilities. Prototype experiments in a 500 mm diameter pipeline further confirm the robot's structural design rationality and its ability to navigate through tee and four-way junction pipes by altering its posture. The results indicate that this pipe robot effectively navigates through straight, vertical tee, and horizontal four-way junction pipes, offering a viable solution for efficiently maneuvering through complex pipeline junctions.

Abstract:A five-bar mechanism with single degree of freedom was proposed to realize the folding transforming of the intelligent wheelchair-stretcher robot. The mechanism was designed and analyzed in detail. The dimensions of the armrest link and the side link were optimized by using minimum containment area method, which were 507.9 mm and 332.5 mm, respectively. The driving device was designed by adopting six torsional springs and RV gear motor according to the static analysis in order to reduce the driving torque of the motor and compact overall structure. The folding mechanism of the robot was designed based on parameters optimization and the design of driving device. The stresses of the armrest link in the toilet state and the folding state were analyzed to verify its reliability. The prototype of the intelligent wheelchair-stretcher robot was developed, and the performance of its folding mechanism was tested. The designed driving device and the optimized parameters are reasonable from the change of the motor current and the view of the movement process of the whole device.
Mechanical Structure Optimization of Sewerage Inspection Robot

Abstract:The sewerage inspection robot is a distance controllable robot by a human operator during the sewerage pipe inspection operation. It travel on wheels and is composed of mechanism like a mobile robot. The concept of this inspection robot is used to inspect the sewerage pipe that is not accessible and hazardous for human. The sewerage inspection robot will detect and inform the defect location for any maintenance and repair works. The common problems in the sewerage pipe are breakage, crack and obstacles between the connections. The developed sewerage inspection robot needs to be designed to withstand the collapse of the sewerage pipe so that the robot is fit to be used for next jobs. The project presents the mechanical structure optimization of sewerage inspection robot. The robot is solid rectangular shape and a designed for sewerage pipe. Abstract:In order to solve the problems that it's hard to send rivets to the automatic drilling riveting machine in the assembly of aircraft,an automatic rivet feeding system was introduced which can deliver rivets for the robot automatic drilling riveting end-performer.A pipe was used to send the rivets from rivet feeding system to rivet insert machine,the rivets were easily stuck in the delivering pipe when they were delivered because of the air pressure or minimum bending radius and other reasons,the rivets in the pipe were analyzed and calculated on the structure,stress and motion state with the knowledge of fluid mechanics,the necessary conditions were obtained in which the rivets could be delivered smoothly,like minimum bending radius and minimum air pressure.Finally,the results by experiments validate the feasibility of rivet pneumatic delivering in a pipe.

Abstract:A compound-drive pipeline robot was proposed, which can solve the problems of inaccurate positioning, low detection quality and poor adaptability of traditional differential pressure pipeline robot. The mechanism and advantages of the compound-driven mode with motor and fluid differential pressure were studied and the structure design and working principle of the compound-driven pipeline robot based on pipeline constraint were analyzed. Through simulation analysis, the kinematic characteristics of the compound-drive pipeline robot under multiple working conditions were studied. the results show that the compound-driven structure of the robot can provide multiple working statuses that meets the requirements of high-quality inspection and maintenance in the pipeline conditions.

Abstract:A Wheel based pipe inspection robot is designed for examining 300 mm to 400 mm diameter pipes which is mostly used in chemical and food industries. The fundamental point of this plan is to perform vertical slithering, autonomous multi elbow turning and support free and viable financial model. Planned robot consists of two significant modules, upper and lower module. Upper and lower course of action have three design wheel with straightforward scissor system for wheel extension. These two modules are associated by spring (compressive) to accomplish wheel extension and adaptable elbow turning. Full plan is done in solid works programming. Accordingly the robot configuration turns out great in vertical development and complex elbow turning.

Abstract:Designing an in-pipe climbing robot that manipulates sharp gears to study complex line relationships. Traditional rolling/happening pipe climbing robots tend to slide when exploring pipe curves. The proposed gearbox connects to the farthest ground plane of a standard dual output gearbox. Instrumentation helps achieve a very well-defined deceleration sequence in which the robot slides and pulls as it moves forward. This instrument takes into account the forces exerted on each track within the line relationship and intentionally modifies the robot's track speed, unlocking the key to fine-tuning. This makes the 3 output transmissions take a lot of time. Deflection of the robot on a pipe network with various bearings and non-slip pipe bends demonstrates the integrity of the proposed structure.

In-pipe Positioning Micro-Robot Based on Cymbal Actuators and Optical Navigation

Abstract:In order to improve loading capacity and moving speed of in-pipe micro-robot,and to make the robot perceive displacement of itself,a kind of inpipe micro-robot based on piezoelectric cymbal actuators and optical navigation technology was developed.The locomotive device of the proposed robot was designed with Φ8 mm piezoelectric cymbal actuators.The kinetic model of the locomotive device was built and verified with finite element method and experiment.The self-displacement inspection unit of the robot was designed with optical navigation chip based on rapid image acquiring and processing technologies.Experimental results show that the robot's locomotive device can load as 4 times its weight,and that the robot's speed can be increased to 41.7 mm/s.The self-displacement inspection unit can inspect the displacement of the linear movement and rotation of the robot in the pipe.The inspecting accuracy of the unit is up to 0.3%.
