Abstract:The imperial examination system in history was not so dark as what it is thought of by the modern people. Therefore, it is necessary to reappraise this system because of the incomplete and non-objective understanding and knowledge of it in the past. The prejudice today comes from the negative attitude towards it prevailing in the late Qinng Dynasty. In fact, many famous scholars in history, from the Sui and Tang Dynasties to the Ming and Qing Dynasties, praised this system, and many of them regarded this system as "the most fair" one. To redress this system has already become an ideological trend in the contemporary Chinese academia. A study of this system is beneficial for our better understanding of the characteristics of Chinese society and the destiny of Chinese traditional culture. At the same time, we can draw a historical lesson from it for the present examination reform.

Abstract:As a pioneer in papermaking and printing technology,China could have been the leading country in reading revolution.However,in China,the real reading revolution did not come until the intrusion of the Western big powers in the late Qing Dynasty.The delayed reading revolution not only fostered Chinese people's reading preference for the Western literature,but also helped promote political resistance in the late Qing era,which facilitated China's comprehensive transition from a traditional empire to a modern nation-state.The interconnection between the reading revolution and Chinese political resistance demonstrated the indispensible role of mass media in the four properties of modern political movements including collective challenge,common purpose,social solidarity and sustained interaction.Moreover,the lack of depth and breadth in the reading revolution made it hard for the mass to reach political consensus,which led to the enduring political disorder and chaos during the Nationalist Government era.

Abstract:The first decade of 1900s was the decade when great changes had taken place in Chinese traditional education.The abolition of the imperial examination system,the issue and implementation of modern school system and the establishment of a large number of new-style schools had greatly shocked the souls of millions of scholars who studied earnestly day and night under the old educational system and had a lot to do with their future and destinies.As a traditional scholar benefiting from imperial examination system,facing great educational changes in the early 1900s,the cognition and activities of Yun Yuding,on the one hand,were greatly influenced by his growth and traditional culture.He felt distressful,grieved and enraged at the collapse of mainstream value system of the feudal society;on the other hand,the consideration of the interests of his family and himself impelled him to get involved into the changes consciously and unconsciously.All the conflicts and paradoxes shown in his lectures and activities were actually a miniature of the complexities of the Chinese intellectuals in the early 1900s and reflected a cultural predicament confronting the intellectuals in times of critical transformation.

Abstract:In the wei-jin period, paper replaced bamboo/wood and silk became the most important tool for writing. The transformation of carrier, has an important inlfuence on the reading. Compared with bamboo/wood and silk, paper was a new and better writing material. When paper books replaced bamboo and silk books, there were more and more books could be read by people. Meanwhile, reading population had a rapid growth, and the popular reading also rised.

Abstract:Under the Hundred Day's Reform wave in 1898,Zhu Shisan attended an old-style private school,and faced with the flames of the Revolution of 1911,Zhu Shisan dropped out of school.Zhu's educational experience seemed to follow the trend of abolishing imperial examination and initiating schools.As an ordinary scholar,Zhu's personal experience could be taken as the extensive representation of the subtle change within Chinese old-style private schools,the deep reflections on the decline of the imperial examination and the unique feeling of the modern school system with the combination of old and new,western and Chinese elements during that era.The educational transformation in the late 19th and earlier 20th century has influenced the personal interest of each scholar,which has determined their attitudes towards this movement.The period of history for later generations to ponder over is the outcry and heroic action of those pioneers of foresight,the self-rescue measures before the decline of the empire,the change of thousands of literati's state of mind and social customs.As for the latter,our research is far from adequate.

Abstract:Since the 1980s, psychoanalysis and psychotherapy have attracted great interest in Chinese society, and in parallel, the psychotherapist as a character has emerged in Chinese literature. Through four novels by three Chinese authors, namely, Xu Xiaobin 徐小斌, Ke Yunlu 柯云路, and Bi Shumin 毕淑敏, this article studies the evolution of the image of the psychotherapist in contemporary Chinese literature, which reflects the reception of psychoanalysis as well as the development of psychotherapy in China. In Xu Xiaobin's novel, two psychology students attempt to cure a psychotic patient through "transference therapy" based on a complete misunderstanding of the notion; Ke Yunlu features a "life counselor" who, like typical good counselors in Chinese classical novels, simply gives advice without caring about the patients' needs and desires; and the two novels by Bi Shumin show a significant change in the writer's understanding of the profession and therapeutic methods, as well as the current, unregulated situation of psychotherapy in China.

Abstract:This article examines the complex, sometimes conflicting, influences of China's Communist movement on psychotherapy and mental illness. The study is centered around the diary of a Chinese woman who simultaneously received therapeutic treatment of neurasthenia while remolding her consciousness as part of the "thought reform" campaign at the Shanghai Police School. Additionally, the study situates this diary within the broader history of psychotherapy in Communist China with highlight on the eventful life of Jiayin Huang, China's leading psychotherapist who helped the neurasthenic patient before being forced out of the therapeutic profession. This contextualized case study produces several findings. It is found that psychotherapy and thought reform converged in several aspects, including their diagnostic and interventional functions. Meanwhile, psychotherapy and thought reform also faced irreconcilable theoretical and normative discrepancies that eventually led to the decline of psychotherapy. Finally, it is argued that China's Communist movement exerted seemingly paradoxical impact on the neurasthenic patient. On the one hand, it pathologized the patient's psychology on an ideological ground; on the other, it promised the possibility of spiritual salvation through dedication to the revolutionary cause.

Abstract:The last few decades have witnessed the excavation of a large quantity of bamboo and silk documents in relation to pre-Qin thoughts and society.Accordingly,steady progress has also been made in this regard.As earlier discussions focused on character,gloss and text annotations,we deem it ripe time to avail of the present research to enrich the writing of intellectual history,and to reveal the theoretical meaning underlying the materials.For this purpose,we have invited a few scholars to examine the pre-Qin intellectual world as reflected in bamboo and silk documents either from the macro view of text-thought interactions,the micro view of theoretical construction,schools of thought and their evolution pertaining to a particular kind of classics,or from the methodological view.Professor Ding Sixin from the School of Philosophy at Wuhan University asserts that we can gain a glimpse of the evolution of earlier "texts" and their interaction with "thoughts" from the bamboo and silk versions of Lao Tzu:The Eternal Tao Te Ching and I Ching(The Book of Changes) excavated over the past 40 decades,as well as the evolution and characteristics of these two kinds of text from the Pre-Qin period through to the late Western Han dynasty.Lao Tzu has undergone far more substantial textual changes than I Ching,which has retained relative consistency and stability in the course of textual transcription.We should strengthen the understanding of their textual character and reflect on our academic ideas and achievements.Professor Wang Bo from the Department of Philosophy at Peking University believes that there existed some specific documents interpreting The Book of Odes,such as Wu Xing(Five Elements),Confucian Poetics and Parents of the People during the Warring States period.These documents not only quoted and interpreted the characters and content in relation to The Book of Odes,but also developed the topic of mind,nature and feelings based on the characteristic of "poetry as a means of expressing one's thought and feelings," affirming and stressing the inseparability of mind/nature and rites.The proposition of the study of mind is a necessary result of Confucian meditations on the reestablishment of rites and order.Professor Cao Feng from the Department of Philosophy at Tsinghua University ascertains two theoretical clues running through the silk document of The Yellow Emperor's Four Canons excavated from Mawangdui:the "Lao Tzu-style discussions on Tao and politics" and the "emperor-style discussions on Tao and politics." Although such a model cannot be readily used to analyze the still earlier bamboo works on the thought of Yellow Emperor and Lao Tzu,such as The Great One Gives Birth to Water,Heng Xian,Three Moralities and Fanwu Liuxing(When the Forms of All Things Become Animate),there exist close relations between later literature and the two types of discussions on Tao and politics,indicating a possibility of further evolvement.Professor Liang Tao from the School of Chinese Classics at Renmin University of China notes that the application of dual attestation to recent research on excavated documents has far exceeded that in Wang Guowei's period.It is used both for an explanation and attestation of ancient history and for a suspicion and discrimination of ancient history.And the diachronic study of unearthed materials and printed materials is more similar to Ku Chieh-kang's "only pursuing its changes." Therefore,the "prototype-meaning evolution theory" not only admits that historical records have their "origins" or "prototypes," but also recognizes the distortions and twists arising from the inheritance,while trying to offer a possible explanation for such evolution.

Abstract:Taoist school is a religious form and a philosophical school in ancient China represented by Laozi and Zhuangzi. It, like the Confucian school, exerts a far-reaching influence on Chinese society and culture. Traditional Chinese medicine-one of the most advanced natural sciences in ancient China-is greatly influenced by thoughts of Taoist school. But in contrast with the extensive study on the correlation between medicine and Yi school, the study on the correlation between medicine and Taoist school has always been comparatively partial and simple, which to a certain degree is attributed to the great and profound thoughts of Taoist school. This paper intends to explore the influences that thoughts of Taoist school in the pre-Qin days have on the formation of basic theories of traditional Chinese medicine. This study will help to trace the origin of traditional Chinese medicine, to probe into the cultural features and humane spirit of traditional Chinese medicine and to research into the correlation between medicine and Taoist school more deeply.

Abstract:The Children's Library research in China started at 1920s,which was closely related with social and educational thought at that time.In China's early research on children's library,Qian Yaxin was a representative personage.Qian devoted to translating lots of western research achievements into Chinese at 1920s which contributed to the China's awareness of children's library.Qian's thought of children's library was mainly included in his paper "An Introduction to Children's Library Science" which published in 1933.In thepaper,Qian constructed a framework about the children's library science from the perspectives of "Children's Studies,Children's Literature,Children's Library" which laid the foundation of China's further children's library research.
