Abstract:Spindlelike, rodlike, starlike, and spherical antimony sulfide (Sb 2 S 3 ) microcrystallites have successfully been synthesized via a sonochemical method at room temperature. The x-ray diffraction pattern analysis based on the Rietveld method demonstrates that ultrasound can convert the structure of Sb 2 S 3 from amorphous phase to crystalline phase. The crystallinity and morphology of Sb 2 S 3 particles can be modified by using different solvents or solutions. It is found that the spindlelike and starlike particles result from the aggregation of nanoparticles while the rodlike particles arise from epitaxial growth. Due to the quantum confinement effect of charge carriers in small microcrystalline volumes, the characteristic peaks in the optical absorption spectrum of the synthesized 0.001 M Sb 2 S 3 (<100 nm) colloidal solutions are blue-shifted by about 500 nm as compared to the bulk band gaps of Sb 2 S 3 .

Abstract:Bismuth sulfide nanorods have been successfully prepared by a sonochemical method from an aqueous solution of bismuth nitrate and sodium thiosulfate in the presence of complexing agents. Bismuth sulfide nanorods with different diameters and lengths could be obtained by using different complexing agents including ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid, triethanolamine, and sodium tartrate. Bi 2S3 nanorods have also been successfully prepared by choosing thioacetamide as the sulfur source. When 20% N,N-dimethylformamide was used as the solvent, higher yield was observed and smaller sizes of Bi2S3 nanorods were obtained. The products were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, selected area electron diffraction, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, IR spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Probable mechanisms for the sonochemical formation of Bi2S3 nanorods in aqueous solutions are proposed.

Abstract:Long silver sulfide nanowires have been prepared via the thioglycolic acid (TGA)-assisted sonochemical method. The transmission electron microscope (TEM) and field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM) images reveal that the nanowires have uniform width and length. The selected area electron diffraction (SAED) pattern indicates that the Ag2S nanowires are amorphous. Furthermore, the mechanism for the TGA-assisted sonochemical synthesis of Ag2S nanowires has been preliminarily presented.

Abstract:Regular stibnite (Sb2S3) nanorods with diameters of 20-40 nm and lengths of 220-350 nm have been successfully synthesized by a sonochemical method under ambient air from an ethanolic solution containing antimony trichloride and thioacetamide. The as-prepared Sb2S3 nanorods are characterized by employing techniques including X-ray powder diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray analysis, transmission electron microscopy, selected area electron diffraction, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, and optical diffuse reflection spectroscopy. Microstructural analysis reveals that the Sb2S3 nanorods crystallize in an orthorhombic structure and predominantly grow along the (001) crystalline plane. High-intensity ultrasound irradiation plays an important role in the formation of these Sb2S3 nanorods. The experimental results show that the sonochemical formation of stibnite nanorods can be divided into four steps in sequence: (1) ultrasound-induced decomposition of the precursor, which leads to the formation of amorphous Sb2S3 nanospheres; (2) ultrasound-induced crystallization of these amorphous nanospheres and generation of nanocrystalline irregular short rods; (3) a crystal growth process, giving rise to the formation of regular needle-shaped nanowhiskers; (4) surface corrosion and fragmentation of the nanowhiskers by ultrasound irradiation, resulting in the formation of regular nanorods. The optical properties of the Sb2S3 amorphous nanospheres, irregular short nanorods, needle-shaped nanowhiskers, and regular nanorods are investigated by diffuse reflection spectroscopic measurements, and the band gaps are measured to be 2.45, 1.99, 1.85, and 1.94 eV, respectively.

Abstract:A simple biomolecule-assisted hydrothermal approach was developed to synthesize antimony sulfide nanowires. The strategy presented here is the application of l-cysteine, acting not as complexing agent but also as sulfur source. The experimental results indicate that the reaction temperature is of importance for obtaining pure antimony sulfide.

Abstract:Bismuth sulfide (Bi2S3) nanowhiskers were prepared via a microwave-assisted route in organic solvent through the reaction of thiourea and bismuth nitrate in the presence of poly (N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone). The detailed reaction progress was followed by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The morphology of the as-prepared Bi2S3 nanowhiskers was filaments extending radially from a nucleation site. The formation of the nanowhiskers was similar to the VLS crystal growth mechanism. The influence of PVP and sulfur sources on the morphology of the prepared Bi2S3 was also investigated.

Abstract:Crystalline Sb2Se3 nanowires with a typical width of 30 nm and length up to 8 mum were synthesized through the reaction between SbCl3 and elemental selenium with sodium sulfite as reducing reagent in diethylene glycol solution. The composition of the products was identified using EDX and XPS. The possible reaction mechanism was also discussed.

Abstract:For the first time, we introduced a simple method of synthesizing segregated thin antimony nanowires based on the principle that nanoparticles can spontaneously self-assemble into crystalline nanowires (∼20 nm) in the absence of any rigid templates at room temperature. By collecting electron energy loss spectra from individual Sb nanowires with different diameters, we investigated the effect of nanowire diameter on plasmon excitations in Sb nanowires. As the diameter of Sb nanowire decreases, we find that the peak energy of surface plasmon shifts toward the lower energy.

Abstract:Bismuth sulfide (Bi2S3) nanofibers have been successfully prepared by a photochemical method from an aqueous solution of bismuth nitrate (Bi(NO3)3) and thioacetamide (TAA) in the presence of complexing agents of nitrilotriacetic acid (NTA) at room temperature. It was found that the irradiation time, the pH of the solution, and the species of complexing agents play important roles in the morphology control of the bismuth sulfate (Bi2S3) nanomaterials. The nanofibers were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), electron diffraction (ED), high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS), and UV-Visible absorption spectra (UV-Vis). Probable mechanisms for the photochemical formation of Bi2S3 nanofibers in aqueous solutions are proposed. The photochemical method is a convenient approach for controlling the shape for other metal sulfide semiconductor nanocrystals.

Abstract:This paper presents a novel method for the preparation of CuS and NiS nanoparticles via a sonochemical route from an aqueous solution containing metal acetate (Cu(CH3COO)(2) or Ni(CH3COO)(2)) and thioacetamide (TAA) in the presence of triethanolamine (TEA) as a complexing agent under ambient air. The products are characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray analysis (EDAX). The as-prepared nanoparticles have regular shape, narrow size distribution and high purity. The probable mechanism for the sonochemical formation of the CuS and NiS nanoparticles is proposed.

Abstract:Nanoparticles of tin disulfide have been successfully prepared by the solvent–thermal synthesis method using different precursors. The X-ray powder diffraction patterns showed that the products were hexagonal SnS2 phase and transmission electron microscope images displayed that the samples were laminar particles with the average size of about 150nm. The Raman spectra showed a sharp peak at 311cm−1, which is characteristic of SnS2. The IR spectra determined the absence of tin oxides. In addition, the possible routes of the reactions were discussed.

Abstract:Lead sulfide nanocrystals have been prepared by two novel routes in microwave heating and ultrasonic irradiation. In the experiments, lead acetate and thiourea are used as lead source and sulfur source, respectively. Different size and morphology of lead sulfide (PbS) nanocrystals can be obtained by using ethanol, distilled water, ethylene glycol and polyethylene glycol-200 as solvents. X-ray diffraction results show that the as-prepared PbS nanocrystals have a cubic structure. Probable mechanisms for the formation of PbS particles are also proposed.

Abstract:Using thiosemicarbazide (NH2CSNHNH2) as starting material, we have successfully synthesized CdS crystalline nanowhiskers with typical length up to 12μm and a width of 60nm on average via a solvothermal route. Meanwhile, the effects of temperature, and reaction time were also discussed. The results revealed that the length of the CdS nanowires increased as the reaction time is lengthened.

Abstract:Monodispersed ultrafine Bi2S3 nanocrystals of ∼3 nm were synthesized via a facile and mild method, in which thioacetamide and bismuth oleate complex were used as the sulfur and bismuth precursors, respectively. The obtained Bi2S3 nanocrystals possessed a high surface area of 305 m2 g-1. The nanostructures of Bi2S3 nanocrystals were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and selective area electron diffraction (SAED) techniques. The optical property of the Bi 2S3 nanocrystals was studied by photoluminescence spectroscopy. A remarkable blue shift and a band gap of ∼1.5 eV were observed. The shape of the Bi2S3 nanocrystals could be tuned by adjusting the initial Bi/S molar ratio and reaction temperature, respectively. A possible burst nucleation mechanism for this monodispersed ultrafine Bi2S3 nanocrystals was proposed. © 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:alpha-AgBiS2 nanowhiskers have been prepared by a solvothermal method at 160degreesC. The characterized results showed that the product was alpha-AgBiS2 which was well crystallized as uniform nanowhiskers. The chain type structure of Bi-S compound under the circumstance of ethylenediamine was found crucial in the formation of alpha-AgBiS2 nanowhiskers in the possible mechanism.

Abstract:We report a simple solution route to large-scale synthesis of uniform, single-crystalline, and well-faceted orthorhombic antimony trioxide (Sb(2)O(3)) nanowires with rectangular cross sections by direct air oxidation of bulk metal antimony (Sb) in a mixed solution made of ethylenediamine (EDA) and deionized water (DIW). The as-synthesized products were analyzed by range of methods, such as XRD, SEM, EDX, TEM, SAED, HRTEM, FTIR, Raman, UV-vis absorption, and photoluminescence (PL) spectra. The as-synthesized Sb(2)O(3) nanowires with rectangular cross sections are usually hundreds of micrometers in length, typically 80-100 nm in width, and 60-80 nm in thickness. The novel room temperature photoluminescence properties of Sb(2)O(3) nanowires with rectangular cross sections displayed a significant UV luminescence with a strong emission band at 374 nm, which was reported for the first time, indicating the as-synthesized products with an optical band gap E(g) = 3.3 eV. It is expected that as-synthesized Sb(2)O(3) nanowires would be a new member of functional materials and used in the manufacture of advanced nanodevices.
