Reliability and Validity of the Optimism-pessimism Scale in Breast Cancer Patients

Abstract:Objective:To evaluate the reliability and validity of the Optimism-pessimism Scale(OPS) in breast cancer patients.Methods: 618 women with breast cancer were tested by Optimism-pessimism Scale,Hamilton Anxiety Scale and Hamilton Depression Scale.Results: The Cronbach’s alpha coefficient of the OPS total scale was 0.901,and the Cronbach’s alpha coefficient of the two subscales of OPS were 0.928 and 0.863;the split-half reliability coefficient of the OPS was 0.730,and the split-half reliability coefficient of the two subscales were 0.882 and 0.857;the test-retest reliability of the OPS was 0.847,and the test-retest reliability of the two subscales were 0.846 and 0.779;the inter-item correlation coefficient of the OPS was 0.457,and the inter-item correlation coefficient of the two subscales were 0.720 and 0.518.The correlation coefficients among the OPS and the subscales of OPS ranged from 0.636 to 0.923.The results of confirmatory factor analysis(χ2/df=4.018,GFI=0.950,IFI=0.967,TLI=0.955,CFI=0.967,RMSEA=0.075) all met the standard of psychometrics and supported the original OPS structural hypothesis of the two factor model.The correlation coefficients among the subscales of OPS,HAMA and HAMD ranged from 0.218 to 0.410.The scores of the two subscales of OPS were significantly different between the urban area and the rural area(P<0.001),only the scores of the Optimism Scale were significantly different among the age groups.Conclusion: The reliability and validity of the Optimism-Pessimism Scale are acceptable,and the scale can effectively detect the breast cancer patients’ optimism and pessimism tendency.
