Abstract:Hakka dialect of Fenghuang Jiangpu is one kind of Hakka dialects in Conghua.This article describes the phonetic features of its initials,finals and tone.Hakka dialect of Fenghuang Jiangpu has typical phonetic features of Hakka dialects.Because of being influenced by Yue dialects,Fenghuang Jiangpu Hakka dialect also has some phonetic features of Yue dialects.

Abstract:Although north Guangdong is one of the Hakkas basic residences, the investigations of the dialects over there are still relatively weak at present. The published paper and monographs on this subject are relatively limited too. This paper gives a detailed description of Hakka initials, finals and tones and generalizes the common characteristics and inside difference based on the dialectal comparison while the classification of Hakka dialects in north Guangdong is also redone, with reference to the previous research.

Abstract:Hancheng, located in the northeast corner of Guanzhong Plain, Shaanxi Province, is an ancient civilized city with a long history and splendid culture. Under the background of the vigorous promotion of Mandarin, many dialects are gradually declining in use, and the Hancheng dialect is the same. Hancheng dialect belongs to Fenhe Piece of Central Plains Mandarin, which has both similarities and differences with Beijing dialect. Hancheng dialect has dentate labial initials [pf pfh f v], while Beijing dialect does not. There are [ʅᴇ] vowels in Hancheng dialect, as well as nasalized vowels such as [ã, ẽ], which are not found in Beijing dialect. Based on this, the author made a field investigation and objective description of the pronunciation, vocabulary and grammar of Hancheng dialect in order to preserve it. Dialects and Mandarin are both bridges for people to communicate, each playing a unique role. As linguists, we bear the mission to meticulously document certain dialects, turning them into precious cultural heritage to be passed down to future generations. This paper describes the relationship between consonant and vowel in Hancheng dialect, and uses a number of table expressions to concretize it. This can not only provide materials for the study of Shaanxi dialect, but also contribute to the study of folk culture, and contribute to the protection of the diversity of dialects, but also promote the sustainable development of language resources.

Abstract:This paper gives a description on the "Minjia dialect"(民家腔),which is a kind of Chinese dialects spoken by the people living in the Bai Autonomous Village of Furongqiao in Sangzhi County,Hunan Province.It summarizes the main phonetic features in initials,finals,and tones of the dialect.It can be found that there are significant differences between the most typical dialect—Furongqiao dialect and the group of Xi'nan Mandarins.

Abstract:The paper verifies that a Hakka dialect in Datang village, Longmu Town, Longchuan County which is located in eastern Guangdong Province, has seven tones, and the yangshang(阳上) tone category belongs to the colloquial strata of the quanzhuo shangsheng(全浊上声) and cizhuo shangsheng(次浊上声), or the medieval quanzhuo(全浊) (voiced stops and affricates) and cizhuo(次浊) (sonorant) initials in the shang(上) category. This dialect has retained an independent tone category yangshang with words with the quanzhuo shangsheng category, a distinctive feature of early Hakka dialects in which the shift of words in the yangshang tone category to other tone categories did not occur as predicted. This is rarely seen in all other Hakka dialects and very valuable in studies on phonological distinction and change of the Hakka dialects.

Abstract:Based on sufficient fieldwork and recent materials, a comprehensive comparison of the phonological features of Hakka dialect across Gannan is firstly made to discuss the internal diversity. Secondly, the reason of internal diversity of Gannan Hakka is analyzed from three points of views: physical geography, administrative division, and historical immigration. Finally, combining with phonological identities and historical background, the relationship between Gannan Hakka and surrounding dialects is discussed, providing further basis for the Hakka ownership of Yuebei (north Guangdong) Tuhua and Bendihua in the middle and upper reaches of Dongjiang Basin. It is shown that the internal difference of Gannan Hakka could mainly be the difference between New Hakka and Old Hakka from the perspective of phonology. There are a slew of similarities between Old Hakka in Gannan and Yuebei, and Bendihua in the middle and upper reaches of Dongjiang Basin, while New Hakka in Gannan and Minxi Hakka, Yuedong Hakka are extremely coherent. Relatively speaking, Old Hakka and Gan dialect in the same province are much more identical. Viewing on the history of immigration, Old Hakka in Gannan and Yuebei, and Bendihua in the middle and upper reaches of Dongjiang Basin can be regarded as "West Line" Hakka. Correspondently, New Hakka in Gannan and Minxi Hakka, Yuedong Hakka can be regarded as "East Line" Hakka. The biggest difference between "West Line" and "East Line" Hakka, which probably originated at the beginning of the formation of Hakka dialect, is that MC zhuoshang currently shifts to Yinping whether or not.

Abstract:Pinghua was regarded as an independent group in Languages Atlas of China. There are skepticism and hesitation in the acadmic circles. The current pronunciations of medieval Fully Voiced Initials are the main criterion for classification of Chinese dialects. According to this criterion, Goulou Cantonese should belong to Pinghua Group, and Jin Group should belong to Mandarin. Hui Group is a separated hybrid dialectal group. Gan Group and Hakka Group were devided into two groups according to cultural identity. Modern Chinese dialects consist of nine groups: Mandarin, Wu, Xiang, Min, Yue, Pinghua, Gan, Hakka, Hui.

Abstract:The rules whether or not MC voiced initials should be aspirated are usually clear in Pinghua or Tuhua dialects in Southern Hu'nan,Nothern Guangdong and Northern Guangxi.But such rules in the cases of Guiyang Tuhua,Ningyuan Pinghua and Yongfu Pinghua cannot be found without understanding the influence of Southwestern Mandarin,in which language contact is an important aspect on forming historical strata.

Abstract:Based on his thorough research on the systematic data of 136 Hakka dialects,the author has found that the modern pronunciation of Hakka's ancient initial RI is being discussed,and further reconstructed the earliest form of it.Finally,he discusses the pronunciation of the word in off rhyme and its development of phonetic drift in Chinese Northern dialects.He points out that the weak form of the initial RI in Guangdong dialect and Hakka happened lately is just the phonetic drift which happened previously to Chinese Northern dialects.

Abstract:Yue Dialect in Lianzhou city,which links with the subdialect Goulou(勾漏) in Western Guangdong and Eastern Guangxi as a whole,is called Sihui Shengby the natives.Owing to this,this paper demonstrates that the most distinguishing feature of Sihui Sheng is that the present pronounciation of ancient jing,zhuang,zhi,zhang initial groups can be divided into three types,taking the accent of Shizheng unincorporated village in ShiMa village for example,which belonged to Qingshui town but now belongs to Xi'an town.The type of level 3 of zhi group pronounced colloquially as duan group,which is rarely seen in Yue dialect while performs parallelly in some other dialects,reflects an ancient historical stratum of initials system in this kind of dialects.

Abstract:The paper discusses two types of unaspirated stops and affricates evolved from MC voiced initials in Hakka and Gan dialects,one of which are colloquial words.Some colloquial words,such as empty words,are exceptions to phonological change rules whereas others may have evolved from MC voiceless initials rather than the familiar voiced ones.The other type involves non-colloquial words that have either converted sound classes or borrowed sound values directly from Mandarin,during the process of which the sound class may have been revalued The confusion of these two types of pronunciations have led to mistakes.For instance,some scholars insist that the unaspirated stop of the colloquial word bian辫is a result under the influence of Putonghua,whereas others have mistakenly ascribed the unaspirated stops and affricates of some rare or even dead words to the substratum of the earlier phonological system.

Abstract:The present study investigated three northern Wu dialects: Wuxi, Suzhou, and Ningbo. It is found that, in all three dialects, focus is encoded by increasing the maximum F0 and duration of focused words, and lowering and compressing the F0 and pitch range of post-focus words. These results are consistent with previous findings about Wu dialect in Shanghai. Northern Wu dialects therefore seem to encode focus in a similar way to Beijing Mandarin, but different from many languages/dialects spoken in southern China. This finding, together with evidence from gene studies and migration history of Wu areas, provide further support for the inheritance hypothesis of PFC, according to which all languages with PFC are descendants of a common proto-language in the Middle East.

Abstract:Hakka people are important component of Indonesian Chinese and,have a long history of immigroting to Indonesia. From the end of nineteenth century to the beginning of twentieth century,the Dutchmen,who worked in Dutch East India Company,edited two reference books of Hakka dialect in order to communicate with the local Hakka. One is Het Loeh-Foeng Dialect ( 1897) by S. H. Schaank,which accurately describes the basic features of Hailuqiang Hakka dialect,the other is Hakka-Woordenboek ( 1912) by P. A. Van De Stadt,which comprehensively records the phonetic and the vocabulary systems of Meixianqiang Hakka dialect. These two books still play a significant role in present academic field of Hakka dialect research.

Abstract:Changping township is located in the east of Dongguan. Yue dialect is spoken in all the villages of Changping. Through our recent field work, we find out that the Changping dialect has a very special final system in which the [i] final is absent while an apical vowel [l] is present and the front close rounded [y] is absent but a front open-mid rounded [oe] is present, that there is no medial sound in the final system, which is even more typical than the Guangzhou dialect, and that there are only 27 finals. This final system is so special that it has typological meanings. It involves a lot of important issues on linguistics and dialectology and its cause is also worth further investigation.

Abstract:Ping dialect in north Guangxi has attracted close attention from scholars for the matter of its belonging for a long time.Liutang dialect in the southeastern Lingui County of Guangxi belongs to Ping dialect,featured by its pronunciation diversity and the evolvement complexity of finals.There is a kind of final variation on condition of yangping tone,involving ancient rhymes in addition to Chuzhi and Shenshe,and showing that the main vowel tongue position of the yangping tone-evoked finals are higher than that of the non-yangping tone rhyme.According to the exploration of the relationship among tone modulation,value and time length of the finals with final variations evoked by yangping tone by means of experimental phonetics,a conclusion can be drawn that it is the difference of time length on the process of sound variation that leads to phenomenon of tone-evoked variation of finals.

Abstract:The migration history of Hakka not only led to the spread and development of the central culture from the northern to southern area of China,but also formed the art of Hakka folk songs with distinctive characteristics and glamour.Similar to the language in the Hakka folk which was mixed by the native language of central plains,the dialects of various places and the local patois in Hakka areas,the tonality of Hakka folk was the fusion of the rhyme in central plains,the musical elements from other areas and the variation of local accents.During the previous great migration,the Hakka folk songs represented by those in Xinguo county,on one hand inherited from and stuck to the classical heritage of ancient phonology in ancestral land,and on the other hand inevitably experienced the collision,permeation and integration with the culture of guest areas and then derived new cultural variation.
