Abstract:The low-lying isomers of cationic water cluster (HO) have been globally explored by using particle swarm optimization algorithm in conjunction with quantum chemical calculations. Compared with previous results, our searching method covers a wide range of structural isomers of (HO) and therefore turns out to be more effective. With these local minima, geometry optimization and vibrational analysis are performed for the most interesting clusters at second-order Møller-Plesset (MP2)/aug-cc-pVDZ level, and their energies are further refined at MP2/aug-cc-pVTZ and coupled-cluster theory with single, double, and perturbative triple excitations/aug-cc-pVDZ level. The interaction energies using the complete basis set limits at MP2 level are also reported. The relationships between their structure arrangement and their energies are discussed. Based on the results of thermal simulation, structural change from a four-numbered ring to a tree-like structure occurs at T ≈ 45 K, and the relative population of six lowest-free-energy isomers is found to exceed 4% at some point within the studied temperature range. Studies reveal that, among these six isomers, two new-found isomers constitute 10% of isomer population at 180 K, and the experimental spectra can be better explained with inclusions of the two isomers. The molecular orbitals for six representative cationic water clusters are also studied. Through topological and reduced density gradient analysis, we investigated the structural characteristics and the bonding strengths of these water cluster radical cations.

Abstract:The structures of the ionized water cluster (H2O)(7)(+) are investigated through the particle swarm optimization method combined with ab initio method. Some new lower energy structures are found after geometric optimization at the MP2/aug-cc-pVDZ level when compared with previous report. We studied the effect of the zero point vibrational energies on the relative energy order of these isomers, the relationship between their schemes and their relative energies, and the composition of their foremost molecular orbitals. The relative free energies of (H2O)(7)(+) isomers below 350 K, the infrared spectra of five lowest energy isomers, and their electronic characteristics were discussed in detail, respectively. Based on topological analysis and reduced density gradient analysis, we find that the interaction between H3O+ core and water molecules is stronger than the interaction between OH radical and water molecules by comparing the structural and the bonding strengths within these cationic water clusters. Abstract:The particle swarm optimization method in conjunction with density functional calculations is used to search the lower energy structures for the cationic water clusters (H2O)5(+). Geometry optimization, vibrational analysis, and infrared spectrum calculation are performed for the most interesting clusters at the MP2/aug-cc-pVDZ level. The relationships between their structural arrangements and their energies are discussed. According to their relative Gibbs free energies, their energy order is determined and four lowest energy isomers are found to have a relative population surpassing 1% below 350 K. Studies reveal that, among these four isomers, one new cluster found here also contributes a lot to the experimental infrared spectrum. Based on topological analysis and reduced density gradient analysis, some meaningful points are found by studying the structural characteristics and the bonding strengths of these cationic water clusters: in the first solvation shell, the central H3O(+) motifs may have a stronger interaction with the OH radical than with the water molecules. The interaction in the second solvation shell may also be stronger than that in the first solvation shell, which is opposite to our intuition.

Abstract:The nearly linear relationship between hydrogen-bond strength at the CCSD(T)/Aug-cc-pVTZ level and the electron density at the bond critical point in the atoms-in-molecules theory provides a practical means of calculating the hydrogen-bond strength in liquid water. A statistical analysis of the hydrogen-bonds obtained from Car-Parrinello molecular dynamics simulations shows that the strengths of hydrogen bonds in liquid water conform to a Gaussian distribution. Considering supercooled (250K) water to have a fully coordinated (icelike) local tetrahedral configuration, we show that the local structure of liquid water is partly distorted tetrahedral in normal liquid water and even in superheated water.

Abstract:The network connectivity in liquid water is revised in terms of electronic signatures of hydrogen bonds (HBs) instead of geometric criteria, in view of recent X-ray absorption studies. The analysis is based on ab initio molecular-dynamics simulations at ambient conditions. Even if instantaneous thread-like structures are observed in the electronic network, they continuously reshape in oscillations reminiscent of the r and t modes in ice (tau~170 fs). However, two water molecules initially joint by a HB remain effectively bound over many periods regardless of its electronic signature.

Abstract:The water octamer with its cubic structure consisting of six four-membered rings presents an excellent cluster system for unraveling the cooperative interactions driven by subtle changes in the hydrogen-bonding topology. Despite prediction of many distinct structures, it has not been possible to extract the structural information encoded in their vibrational spectra because this requires size-selectivity of the neutral clusters with sufficient resolution to identify the contributions of the different isomeric forms. Here we report the size-specific infrared spectra of the isolated cold, neutral water octamer using a scheme based on threshold photoionization using a tunable vacuum ultraviolet free electron laser. A plethora of sharp vibrational bands features are observed. Theoretical analysis of these patterns reveals the coexistence of five cubic isomers, including two with chirality. The relative energies of these structures are found to reflect topology-dependent, delocalized multi-center hydrogen-bonding interactions. These results demonstrate that even with a common structural motif, the degree of cooperativity among the hydrogen-bonding network creates a hierarchy of distinct species. The implications of these results on possible metastable forms of ice are speculated.

Abstract:Although liquid water and ice are characterised by predominantly tetrahedral coordination, small water clusters often exhibit a cubic structural motif. In this article, the stability of hydrogen-bonded water nanostructures in the form of n 1 × n 2 × n 3 cuboids is investigated. The requirement for complete hydrogen bonding imposes a strong constraint on their structure. The equations of the donor–acceptor balance are derived, from which all possible forms of completely hydrogen-bonded cuboids are deduced. The flexible non-additive AMOEBA potential is used for geometric optimisation of the set of configurations with different directions of hydrogen (H-) bonds. It has been established that the majority of completely hydrogen-bonded structures are formed by one layer of fused cubes. The lowest energy configurations of the, in fact, bilayer structures are formed by trans -configurations of transverse pairs of molecules, although some H-bonds are broken in this case. It is noted that the structure of the cuboids may result from the assembly of short nanotubes and smaller cuboids. On the other hand, unrealised H-bonds at the corners of the cuboids make it possible to assemble larger bilayer structures.

Abstract:Water clusters play a prominent role in atmospheric and solution chemistry. Numerous arrangements of protons, H-bond configurations or networks, shape the cluster properties. Studies of small water clusters by cryogenic scanning tunneling microscopy and high-resolution rovibrational spectroscopy have established proton rearrangement mechanisms forming pathways between H-bond networks. The mechanisms, concerted tunneling in particular, describe the <i>local</i> processes connecting pairs of configurations. Here, proton rearrangement networks mapping these transformations are defined and explored to provide a <i>global</i> view of the H-bond configurations in clusters. The networks are constructed for clusters of different sizes and structures. Their analysis reveals an odd-even effect with respect to the number of water molecules, exponential growth of the small-world character, bimodality of the degree distributions, and gapped assortativity of the networks. The last two properties signify the unexpected division of H-bond configurations into two classes according to their network connectivity. The results demonstrate qualitative differences between proton rearrangement mechanisms, suggest a strong influence of the cluster structure. The generated networks are of interest as real-world models for network rewiring; they establish an alternative platform for studies of proton rearrangements in H-bonded systems.

Abstract:The molecular structure of water is dynamic, with intermolecular (H)-bond interactions being modified by both electronic charge transfer and nuclear quantum effects (NQEs). Electronic charge transfer and NQEs potentially change under acidic / basic conditions, but such details have not been measured. Here, we developed correlated vibrational spectroscopy, a symmetry-based method that distinctively separates interacting from non-interacting molecules in self- and cross-correlation spectra, giving access to previously inaccessible information. We found that OH − donated ~8% more negative charge to the H-bond network of water and H 3 O + accepted ~4% less negative charge from the H-bond network of water. D 2 O had ~9% more H-bonds compared to H 2 O, and acidic solutions displayed more dominant NQEs than basic ones.

Abstract:Despite its simple molecular structure, water is still a mystery to scientists. For the atomic and molecular vibrational modes of ice, as is well known, there are two kinds of vibrations: intra-molecular O—H stretching vibration and H—O—H bending vibration within the molecules and three kinds of molecular spatial rotations. However, thirty years ago, a high flux inelastic neutron scattering experiment showed that there are two distinct characteristic peaks in the far-infrared molecular translational vibration region of many ice phases. The origins of these peaks have not been determined till now. In this work, based on the CASTEP code, a first-principles density functional theory plane wave programme, the vibrational spectra as well as the vibrational normal modes of a series of ice phases are investigated. Two kinds of intrinsic hydrogen bond vibrational modes are first found in hydrogen-ordered ice Ic. Then it is found to be a general rule among ice family. Based on the ideal model, we prove that the two vibrational modes can be classified as four-bond vibration and two-bond vibration. There are many coupling modes in-between due to tetrahedral structure deformation under high pressure. Besides, there are also some optical vibrational modes with lower energy in the translational region, such as cluster vibrations and inter-plane vibrations. In Ice VII/VIII and XV/VI, each of which consists of two sublattices, there exist non-hydrogen bond vibrations. These molecular translational vibrations can explain all the far-infrared vibrational spectrum of ice phase, which makes up the last piece of the jigsaw puzzle for the molecular vibration theory of ice. The two vibrational modes do not exist in liquid water due to the collapse of the rigid tetrahedral structure. Thus, a window remains for ice resonance absorption with minimum energy loss in water. This theory is expected to be applicable to industrial deicing, food thawing, gas hydrate mining, and biomolecule frozen molding, etc.

Abstract:As a key species in understanding the hydrogen-bonding network transitions between liquid water and ice, the neutral water heptamer is a challenging experimental target, owing to the richness of low-lying isomers. Here, we report the size-specific infrared spectra of confinement-free, neutral water heptamer (H2O)7 based on threshold photoionization using a tunable vacuum ultraviolet free electron laser. The complexity of the observed spectra indicates that many nearly isoenergetic isomers are present at finite temperatures. Two classes of prism- and cage-like structures are identified in a high-pressure pulsed supersonic expansion of water heptamer, in which the former is favored energetically at low temperatures and serves as a major contributor to the experimental spectrum. These findings provide key information for filling the gap between well-studied water hexamer and octamer.

Abstract:Water is a ubiquitous solvent on earth. Despite numerous efforts for many years, the detailed structure of liquid water is still under debate. This is mainly due to the flexible hydrogen bonding system of water. Thus, in 2005, the structure of water was listed as one of 125 challenging questions to the scientific community in the prestigious journal Science upon the occasion of its 125 anniversary. In this mini-review, we summarized the progress on the understanding of the structure of water in the last decade or so. In comparison with the classical structure model of water which has an ice-like tetrahedron hydrogen bonding network, more disordered models was proposed based on X-ray absorption spectroscopy and X-ray Raman scattering experiments. Disputes on the explanations of the results and beyond, such as the average number of hydrogen bonds per water molecule and the chains or rings molecular arrangements in liquid water, are presented. As to the nature of hydrogen bond, the classical view takes it as short-ranged dipole-dipoleinteraction. A new view of long-ranged angular correlation function of liquid water and its possible implication to the cooperativity of hydrogen bonding network are discussed. Then the quantum nature of hydrogen atoms in water and its implication to hydrogen bonds, the femtosecond-scale formation and breaking dynamics of hydrogen bonds in water, are introduced, followed by a description on the structures of water under extreme conditions, such as high pressure or supercool temperature. The structures of water under special conditions such as on the solid surface and confined space are reviewed. Particularly, water organizations in liquid helium or under other conditions and thus the experimental evidences of water clusters are described. Finally, four suggestions are put forward for future studies on the structures of water, namely the development of ultrafast and high-resolution techniques to collect more reliable experimental results, improvement of quantum chemicaland molecular dynamics methods including development of accurate force field, construction of a full-scale model of water structure which can explain the anomalous properties of water, and investigation of the structures of water in different situations.

Abstract:The prototypical Hydrogen bond in water dimer and Hydrogen bonds in the protonated water dimer, in other small molecules, in water cyclic clusters, and in ice, covering a wide range of bond strengths, are theoretically investigated by first-principles calculations based on the Density Functional Theory, considering a standard Generalized Gradient Approximation functional but also, for the water dimer, hybrid and van-der-Waals corrected functionals. We compute structural, energetic, and electrostatic (induced molecular dipole moments) properties. In particular, Hydrogen bonds are characterized in terms of differential electron densities distributions and profiles, and of the shifts of the centres of Maximally localized Wannier Functions. The information from the latter quantities can be conveyed into a single geometric bonding parameter that appears to be correlated to the Mayer bond order parameter and can be taken as an estimate of the covalent contribution to the Hydrogen bond. By considering the cyclic water hexamer and the hexagonal phase of ice we also elucidate the importance of cooperative/anticooperative effects in Hydrogen-bonding formation.

Unveiling the Surface Structure of Amorphous Solid Water via Selective Infrared Irradiation of OH Stretching Modes

Abstract:In the quest to understand the formation of the building blocks of life, amorphous solid water (ASW) is one of the most widely studied molecular systems. Indeed, ASW is ubiquitous in the cold interstellar medium (ISM), where ASW-coated dust grains provide a catalytic surface for solid phase chemistry, and is believed to be present in the Earth's atmosphere at high altitudes. It has been shown that the ice surface adsorbs small molecules such as CO, N$_2$, or CH$_4$, most likely at OH groups dangling from the surface. Our study presents completely new insights concerning the behaviour of ASW upon selective infrared (IR) irradiation of its dangling modes. When irradiated, these surface H$_2$O molecules reorganise, predominantly forming a stabilised monomer-like water mode on the ice surface. We show that we systematically provoke "hole-burning" effects (or net loss of oscillators) at the wavelength of irradiation and reproduce the same absorbed water monomer on the ASW surface. Our study suggests that all dangling modes share one common channel of vibrational relaxation; the ice remains amorphous but with a reduced range of binding sites, and thus an altered catalytic capacity.

Abstract:The unprecedentedly undissociated HCl hydrates, and unconventional cis-linear conformation of the water dimer at ambient condition were found in a novel organic crystal by direct crystallographic evidences. The peculiar tricyclo[6.2.0.0]-type configuration of hydrogen-bonding network induces such unexpected undissociated HCl hydrates, and unusual cis-linear conformation of the water dimer. Abstract:We have performed a detailed MM and DFT investigation of neutral water clusters (H 2 O) n ( n = 3–12). Our results show the trend of interaction energies in these clusters as a function of the size of the cluster. They show that the H-bond strength increases with cluster size and that the model of water is better described if two different partial charges are used on the hydrogen, depending on whether hydrogen is H-bonded or not. The average binding enthalpy change due to the formation of H-bonds between water molecules is found to be − 25.9 kJ mol −1 at B3LYP/aug-cc-pVDZ level of theory. We observe the formation of cyclic H-bonded networks through the analysis of frontier orbitals and IR vibrational frequencies spectra. For the water cluster with n = 11, we observe an unusual reduction of the bandgap indicative of a cyclic H-bonded network.

Characteristics of hydrogen bond revealed from water clusters

Abstract:The hydrogen bond network is responsible for the exceptional physical and chemical properties of water, however, the description of hydrogen bond remains a challenge for the studies of condensed water. The investigation of structural and binding properties of water clusters provides a key for understanding the H-bonds in bulk water. In this paper, a new set of geometric parameters are defined to describe the extent of the overlap between the bonding orbital of the donor OH and the nonbonding orbital of the lone-pair of the acceptor molecule. This orbital overlap plays a dominant role for the strength of H-bonds. The dependences of the binding energy of the water dimer on these parameters are studied. The results show that these parameters properly describe the H-bond strength. The ring, book, cage and prism isomers of water hexamer form 6, 7, 8 and 9 H-bonds, and the strength of the bonding in these isomers changes markedly. The internally-solvated and the all-surface structures of (H 2 O) n for n = 17, 19 and 21 are nearly isoenergetic. The internally-solvated isomers form fewer but stronger H-bonds. The hydrogen bonding in the above clusters are investigated in detail. The geometric parameters can well describe the characters of the H-bonds, and they correlate well with the H-bond strength. For the structures forming stronger H-bonds, the H-bond lengths are shorter, the angle parameters are closer to the optimum values, and their rms deviations are smaller. The H-bonds emanating from DDAA and DDA molecules as H-donor are relatively weak. The vibrational spectra of (H 2 O) n ( n = 17, 19 and 21) are studied as well. The stretching vibration of the intramolecular OH bond is sensitive to its bonding environment. The H-bond strength judged from the geometric parameters is in good agreement with the bonding strength judged from the stretching frequencies.
