Abstract:We consider the flow of an electrically conducting fluid confined in a rotating spherical shell. The flow is driven by a directly imposed electromagnetic body force, created by the combination of an electric current flowing from the inner sphere to a ring-shaped electrode around the equator of the outer sphere and a separately imposed predominantly axial magnetic field. We begin by numerically computing the axisymmetric basic states, which consist of a strong zonal flow. We next compute the linear onset of non-axisymmetric instabilities, and fully three-dimensional solutions up to ten times supercritical. We demonstrate that an experimental liquid-sodium device 50 cm in diameter could achieve and exceed these parameter values.

Abstract:This paper considers the movement of an incompressible non-Newtonian Walters’ B liquid within a rotating annulus. The flow lies within porous media and is magnetized by a uniform normal magnetic field. Mass transmission is included in the arrangements of homogeneous and heterogeneous chemical reactions (HHCR) with a thermal diffusion effect. Heat diffusion is exposed with a temperature- dependent heat source (THS) and an exponential radial-dependent heat source (ERHS), besides Joule heating and viscous dissipations. The mathematical construction is shown by momentum, energy and concentration of chemical materials equations along with time-periodic boundary conditions. The innovation of this study stems from considering mass transfer utilizing HHCR, with thermal diffusion effects in the flow within a rotating annulus, trying to understand the effect of these reactions on the flow and related applications. The principal regulating the structure of nonlinear partial differential equations is transferred by ordinary ones utilizing appropriate similarity analysis. These equations are analyzed by the homotopy perturbation method. Subsequently, the analytical solutions of the main profiles are obtained, and a graphical construction is established to clarify the effects of the relevant physical elements. It is observed that the velocity waves decrease with annulus width enlargement and increase with the wave phase amplitude. With an increase in all significant parameters, heat transmission gets better. Furthermore, as the strength of HHCR is increased, the concentration of molecules decreases. These outcomes are significant in several applications like cancer therapy, biochemical manufacturing purposes through reactors, where biochemical interactions can be regulated by accurate control of various parameters.
Kinematic Dynamo Action in Spherical Couette Flow

Abstract:We investigate numerically kinematic dynamos driven by flow of electrically conducting fluid in the shell between two concentric differentially rotating spheres, a configuration normally referred to as spherical Couette flow. We compare between axisymmetric (2D) and fully 3D flows, between low and high global rotation rates, between prograde and retrograde differential rotations, between weak and strong nonlinear inertial forces, between insulating and conducting boundaries and between two aspect ratios. The main results are as follows. Azimuthally drifting Rossby waves arising from the destabilisation of the Stewartson shear layer are crucial to dynamo action. Differential rotation and helical Rossby waves combine to contribute to the spherical Couette dynamo. At a slow global rotation rate, the direction of differential rotation plays an important role in the dynamo because of different patterns of Rossby waves in prograde and retrograde flows. At a rapid global rotation rate, stronger flow supercriticality (namely the difference between the differential rotation rate of the flow and its critical value for the onset of nonaxisymmetric instability) facilitates the onset of dynamo action. A conducting magnetic boundary condition and a larger aspect ratio both favour dynamo action.

Abstract:We present axisymmetric numerical calculations of the fluid flow induced in a spherical shell with inner sphere rotating and outer sphere stationary. A magnetic field is also imposed, consisting of particular linear combinations of axial and dipolar fields, chosen to make B r = 0 at either the outer sphere, or the inner, or in between. This leads to the formation of Shercliff shear layers at these particular locations. We then consider the effect of increasingly large inertial effects and show that an outer Shercliff layer is eventually destabilized, an inner Shercliff layer appears to remain stable, and an in-between Shercliff layer is almost completely disrupted even before the onset of time-dependence, which does eventually occur though.

Abstract:The stabilities of an annulus flow between the rotating inner and outer cylinders with an external helical magnetic field are studied by using the quasistatic approximation. It is shown numerically that for the spiral base flow with a zero axial pressure gradient, the helical magnetic field yields a helical traveling wave at a critical Reynolds number. This wave mode is revealed to be the most unstable mode by linear stability analysis. At higher Reynolds numbers, the first wave mode is superposed by a second antisymmetric helical wave mode, which travels with a higher phase velocity than the first mode. When the Reynolds number is increased further, the flow becomes turbulent, but the key features of the flow structure are still dominated by the first and the second wave modes. Furthermore, when a finite axial pressure gradient is applied to guarantee a zero axial flow rate, the annulus flow is found to be more unstable than the case with zero axial pressure gradient.

Abstract:We investigate generalized Navier-Stokes (GNS) equations that couple nonlinear advection with a generic linear instability. This analytically tractable minimal model for fluid flows driven by internal active stresses has recently been shown to permit exact solutions on a stationary two-dimensional sphere. Here, we extend the analysis to linearly driven flows on rotating spheres. We derive exact solutions of the GNS equations corresponding to time-independent zonal jets and superposed westward-propagating Rossby waves, qualitatively similar to those seen in planetary atmospheres. Direct numerical simulations with large rotation rates obtain statistically stationary states close to these exact solutions. The measured phase speeds of waves in the GNS simulations agree with analytical predictions for Rossby waves.

Abstract:The asymptotic structure of outflows from rotating magnetized objects confined by a uniform external pressure is calculated. The flow is assumed to be perfect MHD, polytropic, axisymmetric and stationary. The well known associated first integrals together with the confining external pressure, which is taken to be independent of the distance to the source, determine the asymptotic structure. The integrals are provided by solving the flow physics for the base within the framework of the model developed in Paper I (Lery et al. 1998), which assumes conical geometry below the fast mode surface, and ensures the Alfv\'en regularity condition. Far from the source, the outflow collimate cylindrically. Slow (i.e. with small rotation parameter $\omega$) rigid rotators give rise to diffuse electric current distribution in the asymptotic region. They are dominated by gas pressure. Fast rigid rotators have a core-envelope structure in which a current carrying core is surrounded by an essentially current free region where the azimuthal magnetic field dominates. The total asymptotic poloidal current carried away decreases steadily with the external pressure. A sizeable finite current remains present for fast rotators even at exceedingly small, but still finite, pressure.

Abstract:This paper studied the Magneto hydrodynamic (MHD) flow and heat transfer of an electrically conducting non-Newtonian fluid over a rotating disk in the presence of a uniform magnetic field. The steady, laminar and axial-symmetric flow is driven solely by the rotating disk, and the incompressible fluid obeys the inelastic Ostwald de-Waele power-law model. The governing differential equations were reduced to a set of ordinary differential equations by utilizing the generalized Karman similarity transformation. The nonlinear two-point boundary value problem is solved by multi-shooting method. Numerical results show that the magnetic parameter and the power-law index have significant effects on the swirling flow and heat transfer.

Abstract:Axisymmetric magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) can be invoked for describing astrophysical magnetized flows and formulated to model stellar magnetospheres including main-sequence stars (e.g. the Sun), compact stellar objects [e.g. magnetic white dwarfs (MWDs), radio pulsars, anomalous X-ray pulsars, magnetars, isolated neutron stars, etc.] and planets as a major step forward towards a full three-dimensional model construction. Using powerful and reliable numerical solvers based on two distinct finite-difference method and finite-element method schemes of algorithm, we examine axisymmetric steady-state or stationary MHD models in Throumoulopoulos & Tasso, finding that their separable semi-analytic non-linear solutions are actually not unique given their specific selection of several free functionals and chosen boundary conditions. Similar situations of multiple non-linear solutions with the same boundary conditions actually also happen to force-free magnetic field models of Low & Lou. The multiplicity of non-linear steady MHD solutions gives rise to differences in the total energies contained in the magnetic fields and flow velocity fields as well as in the asymptotic behaviours approaching infinity, which may in turn explain why numerical solvers tend to converge to a non-linear solution with a lower energy than the corresponding separable semi-analytic one. By properly adjusting model parameters, we invoke semi-analytic and numerical solutions to describe different kinds of scenarios, including nearly parallel case and the situation in which the misalignment between the plasma flow and magnetic field is considerable. We propose that these MHD models are capable of describing the magnetospheres of MWDs as examples of applications with moderate conditions (including magnetic field) where the typical values of several important parameters are consistent with observations. Physical parameters can also be estimated based on such MHD models directly. We discuss the challenges of developing numerical extrapolation MHD codes in view of the non-linear degeneracy.

Abstract:In this paper, the rotated-hybrid scheme is applied for the first time to 3D magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) equations in the finite-volume frame. This scheme is devised by decomposing a cell-face normal vector into two orthogonal directions and combining the Roe solver, a full-wave or complete Riemann solver, and the Rusanov solver, an incomplete Riemann solver, into one rotated-hybrid Riemann solver. To keep the magnetic field divergence-free, we propose two kinds of divergence-cleaning approaches by combining the least-squares reconstruction of magnetic field with the divergence-free constraints. One is the locally solenoidality-preserving method designed to locally maintain the magnetic solenoidality exactly, not just in a least-squares sense, and another is the globally solenoidality-preserving (SP) approach that is implemented by adding a global constraint but abandons the exactness of the locally divergence-free condition. Both SP methods are employed for 3D MHD with a rotated-hybrid scheme in the finite-volume frame. To validate and demonstrate the capabilities of the rotated-hybrid scheme for MHD, we perform an Orszag–Tang MHD vortex problem and a numerical study for the steady-state coronal structures of Carrington rotation 2068 during the solar activity minimum. The numerical tests show the robustness of the proposed scheme and demonstrate the capability of these two SP approaches to keep the magnetic divergence errors to the expected accuracy.
Decay of isotropic flow and anisotropic flow with rotation or magnetic field or both in a weakly nonlinear regime

Abstract:We investigate numerically the decay of isotropic, rotating, magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) and rotating MHD flows in a periodic box. The Reynolds number Re defined by the box size and the initial velocity is 100, at which the flows are in a weakly nonlinear regime, i.e. not laminar but far away from the fully turbulent state. The decay of isotropic flow has two stages, the first stage for the development of small scales and the second stage for the viscous dissipation. In the rapidly rotating flow, fast rotation induces the inertial wave and causes the large-scale structure to inhibit the development of the first stage and retard the flow decay. In the MHD flow, the imposed field also causes the large-scale structure but facilitates the flow decay in the first stage because of the energy conversion from flow to magnetic field. The magnetic Reynolds number Rm is important for the dynamics of the MHD flow; namely, a high Rm induces the Alfvén wave but a low Rm can not. In the rotating MHD flow, slower rotation tends to convert more kinetic energy to magnetic energy. The orientation between the rotational and magnetic axes is important for the dynamics of the rotating MHD flow; namely, the energy conversion is more efficient and a stronger wave is induced when the two axes are not parallel than when they are parallel.
ON OBLIQUELY MAGNETIZED AND DIFFERENTIALLY ROTATING STARS

Abstract:We investigate the interaction of differential rotation and a misaligned magnetic field. The incompressible magnetohydrodynamic equations are solved numerically for a free-decay problem. In the kinematic limit, differential rotation annihilates the non-axisymmetric field on a timescale proportional to the cube root of magnetic Reynolds number (Rm), as predicted by Radler. Nonlinearly, the outcome depends upon the initial energy in the non-axisymmetric part of the field. Sufficiently weak fields approach axisymmetry as in the kinematic limit; some differential rotation survives across magnetic surfaces, at least on intermediate timescales. Stronger fields enforce uniform rotation and remain non-axisymmetric. The initial field strength that divides these two regimes does not follow the scaling Rm(-1/3) predicted by quasi-kinematic arguments, perhaps because our Rm is never sufficiently large or because of reconnection. We discuss the possible relevance of these results to tidal synchronization and tidal heating of close binary stars, particularly double white dwarfs.
Rapidly rotating spherical Couette flow in a dipolar magnetic field: an experimental study of the mean axisymmetric flow

Abstract:In order to explore the magnetostrophic regime expected for planetary cores, experiments have been conducted in a rotating sphere filled with liquid sodium, with an imposed dipolar magnetic field (the DTS setup). The field is produced by a permanent magnet enclosed in an inner sphere, which can rotate at a separate rate, producing a spherical Couette flow. The flow properties are investigated by measuring electric potentials on the outer sphere, the induced magnetic field in the laboratory frame, and velocity profiles inside the liquid sodium using ultrasonic Doppler velocimetry. The present article focuses on the time-averaged axisymmetric part of the flow. The Doppler profiles show that the angular velocity of the fluid is relatively uniform in most of the fluid shell, but rises near the inner sphere, revealing the presence of a magnetic wind, and gently drops towards the outer sphere. The transition from a magnetostrophic flow near the inner sphere to a geostrophic flow near the outer sphere is controlled by the local Elsasser number. For Rossby numbers up to order 1, the observed velocity profiles all show a similar shape. Numerical simulations in the linear regime are computed, and synthetic velocity profiles are compared with the measured ones. In the geostrophic region, a torque-balance model provides very good predictions. We find that the induced magnetic field varies in a consistent fashion, and displays a peculiar peak in the counter-rotating regime. This happens when the fluid rotation rate is almost equal and opposite to the outer sphere rotation rate. The fluid is then almost at rest in the laboratory frame, and the Proudman-Taylor constraint vanishes, enabling a strong meridional flow. We suggest that dynamo action might be favored in such a situation.

Abstract:A numerical study of three-dimensional (3D) MHD laminar flow in a short horizontal cylindrical annulus has been performed to characterize the impacts of a uniform axial magnetic field on both hydrodynamic and thermal behaviors. This configuration corresponds to a horizontal annular mold containing molten iron or low carbon steel in electromagnetic casting (EMC). Complex nonlinear governing equations are solved numerically by means of the finite volume method based on artificial compressibility algorithm. The induced electric potential caused by the magnetic field is considered. Results show that a typical 3D steady spiral flow arises and the symmetry breaking occurs under a weak magnetic field of Ha < 10. As the Hartmann number increases, the spiral flow is distinctly suppressed, and then it changes to a helical flow with two transverse cells adjacent to each of the end walls. Correspondingly, the flow patterns and isotherms of fluid become symmetric with respect to the mid-axial plane of the annulus. Further increasing the Hartmann number, the fluid particle trajectories essentially lie in the cross-section of the annulus, as for two-dimensional solutions, with an extremely small axial dependency. In addition, both the values of local Nusselt number at the isothermal walls and its axial dependency, mainly in the upper region (-3/8 pi <= phi <= 3/8 pi), are significantly affected by the magnetic field. The results of the present work can be useful in producing high-quality products by magnetic control.
Magnetoconvection in a rotating spherical shell in the presence of a uniform axial magnetic field

Abstract:We report simulations of thermal convection and magnetic-field generation in a rapidly-rotating spherical shell, in the presence of a uniform axial magnetic field of variable strength. We consider the effect of the imposed field on the critical parameters (Rayleigh number, azimuthal wavenumber and propagation frequency) for the onset of convection, and on the relative importance of Coriolis, buoyancy and Lorentz forces in the resulting solutions. The imposed field strength must be of order one (corresponding to an Elsasser number of unity) to observe significant modifications of the flow; in this case, all the critical parameters are reduced, an effect that is more pronounced at small Ekman numbers. Beyond onset, we study the variations of the structure and properties of the magnetically-modified convective flows with increasing Rayleigh numbers. In particular, we note the weak relative kinetic helicity, the rapid breakdown of the columnarity, and the enhanced heat transport efficiency of the flows obtained for imposed field strengths of order one. Furthermore, magnetic and thermal winds drive a significant zonal flow in this case, which is not present with no imposed field or with stronger imposed fields. The mechanisms for magnetic field generation (particularly the lengthscales involved in the axisymmetric field production) vary with the strength of the imposed field, with three distinct regimes being observed for weak, order one, and stronger imposed fields. In the last two cases, the induced magnetic field reinforces the imposed field, even exceeding its strength for large Rayleigh numbers, which suggests that magnetically-modified flows might be able to produce large-scale self-sustained magnetic field. These magnetoconvection calculations are relevant to planets orbiting magnetically active hosts, and also help to elucidate the mechanisms for field generation in a strong-field regime.

The Ekman-Hartmann layer in MHD Taylor-Couette flow

Abstract:We study magnetic effects induced by rigidly rotating plates enclosing a cylindrical MHD Taylor-Couette flow at the finite aspect ratio $H/D=10$. The fluid confined between the cylinders is assumed to be liquid metal characterized by small magnetic Prandtl number, the cylinders are perfectly conducting, an axial magnetic field is imposed $\Ha \approx 10$, the rotation rates correspond to $\Rey$ of order $10^2-10^3$. We show that the end-plates introduce, besides the well known Ekman circulation, similar magnetic effects which arise for infinite, rotating plates, horizontally unbounded by any walls. In particular there exists the Hartmann current which penetrates the fluid, turns into the radial direction and together with the applied magnetic field gives rise to a force. Consequently the flow can be compared with a Taylor-Dean flow driven by an azimuthal pressure gradient. We analyze stability of such flows and show that the currents induced by the plates can give rise to instability for the considered parameters. When designing an MHD Taylor-Couette experiment, a special care must be taken concerning the vertical magnetic boundaries so they do not significantly alter the rotational profile.

Abstract:We investigate analytically the magnetic instability in a rotating andelectrically conducting fluid induced by an imposed magnetic field with itsassociated electric current. The short-wavelength approximation is used in thelinear stability analysis, i.e. the length scale of the imposed field is muchlarger than the wavelength of perturbations. The dispersion relationship isderived and then simplified to give the criteria for the onset of the magneticinstability in three cases of imposed field, namely the axial dependence, theradial dependence and the mixed case. The orientation of rotation, imposedfield and imposed current is important for this instability.
Chaotic advection in a steady three-dimensional MHD flow

Abstract:We investigate a real 3D stationary flow characterized by chaotic advection generated by a magnetic field created by permanent magnets acting on a weakly conductive fluid subjected to a weak constant current. The model under consideration involves the Stokes equations for viscous incompressible fluid at low Reynolds number in which the density forces correspond to the Lorentz force generated by the magnetic field of the magnets and the electric current through the fluid. An innovative numerical approach based on a mixed finite element method has been developed and implemented for computing the flow velocity fields with the electromagnetic force. This ensures highly accurate numerical results, allowing a detailed analysis of the chaotic behavior of fluid trajectories through the computations of associated Poincaré sections and Lyapunov exponents. Subsequently, an examination of mixing efficiency is conducted, employing computations of contamination and homogeneity rates, as well as mixing time. The obtained results underscore the relevance of the modeling and computational tools employed, as well as the design of the magnetohydrodynamic device used.

Abstract:We explore numerically the flow induced in a spherical shell by differentially rotating the inner and outer spheres. The fluid is also taken to be electrically conducting (in the low magnetic Reynolds number limit), and a magnetic field is imposed parallel to the axis of rotation. If the outer sphere is stationary, the magnetic field induces a Shercliffe layer on the tangent cylinder, the cylinder just touching the inner sphere and parallel to the field. If the magnetic field is absent, but a strong overall rotation is present, Coriolis effects induce a Stewartson layer on the tangent cylinder. The non-axisymmetric instabilities of both types of layer separately have been studied before; here we consider the two cases side by side, as well as the mixed case, and investigate how magnetic and rotational effects interact. We find that if the differential rotation and the overall rotation are in the same direction, the overall rotation may have a destabilizing influence, whereas if the differential rotation and the overall rotation are in the opposite direction, the overall rotation always has a stabilizing influence.
Steady azimuthal flow field induced by a rotating sphere near a rigid disk or inside a gap between two coaxially positioned rigid disks

Abstract:Geometric confinements play an important role in many physical and biological processes and significantly affect the rheology and behavior of colloidal suspensions at low Reynolds numbers. On the basis of the linear Stokes equations, we investigate theoretically and computationally the viscous azimuthal flow induced by the slow rotation of a small spherical particle located in the vicinity of a rigid no-slip disk or inside a gap between two coaxially positioned rigid no-slip disks of the same radius. We formulate the solution of the hydrodynamic problem as a mixed-boundary-value problem in the whole fluid domain, which we subsequently transform into a system of dual integral equations. Near a stationary disk, we show that the resulting integral equation can be reduced into an elementary Abel integral equation that admits a unique analytical solution. Between two coaxially positioned stationary disks, we demonstrate that the flow problem can be transformed into a system of two Fredholm integral equations of the first kind. The latter are solved by means of numerical approaches. Using our solution, we further investigate the effect of the disks on the slow rotational motion of a colloidal particle and provide expressions of the hydrodynamic mobility as a function of the system geometry. We compare our results with corresponding finite-element simulations and observe very good agreement.
