Effects of ground mulberry leaf on production performance and egg quality of layers

Abstract:The experiment was conducted to study the effect of ground mulberry leaf on production performance and egg quality of layers.A total of 163 Roman pink layers aged 412 days were allotted into four treatment groups with 12 replicates and 3 ～ 4 birds per replicate.Four groups of layers were fed diets supplemented with 0,5 %,8 % and 11 % ground mulberry leaf,respectively.The results showed that adding ground mulberry leaf into the layer diet significantly reduced egg production rate(P < 0.01),but had no effect on the feed/egg ratio(except the 5 % group) and feed intake(P > 0.05).Diet supplemented with ground mulberry leaf increased yolk color(P < 0.01),increased polyunsaturated fatty acids(PUFA) and ω-6 fatty acids(P < 0.05),decreased ω-3 fatty acids of yolk with 8 % and 11 % supplementation(P < 0.01),but had no significant effects on other egg quality indices(P > 0.05).In conclusion,ground mulberry leaf could be used as a feed resource,especially in improving the egg yolk color and yolk PUFA and ω-6 fatty acid content.
