Abstract:A series of Mn-complexes with tetradentate N4 ligands, introducing aromatic groups into 2-pyridylmethyl positions of N,N′-dimethyl-N,N′-bis(2-pyridylmethyl)ethane-1,2-diamine (mep), N,N′-dimethyl-N,N′-bis(2-pyridylmethyl)cyclohexane-trans-diamine (mcp), have been synthesized and applied for epoxidation of olefins using H2O2 as the oxidant. The Mn-complexes still possessed an octahedral mononuclear structure in a cis-α topology. These complexes showed good regioselectivity, high yields and turnover frequency (even up to 228,000h−1) with low catalyst loading (0.1–0.01mol%) for epoxidation of a family of olefins (including internal aromatic olefins, internal and terminal aliphatic olefins and diolefins).

Abstract:A tetradentate ligand together with its manganese complex has been synthesized and characterized.The complex was screened for the catalytic epoxidation of a broad range of olefins using AcO2H as the oxidant.The efficient epoxidation of a family of olefins has been accomplished by the manganese catalyst that exhibits an uncommon chemoselectivity with low catalyst loading(0.5%),fast conversion(5 min) and high yields(85%-99%).

Abstract:A detailed radical chain elementary reaction mechanism for the liquid-phase catalytic oxidation of meta-xylene to meta-phthalic acid catalyzed by cobalt acetate and manganese acetate and promoted by hydrogen bromide was proposed. Using several reasonable assumptions a simple fractional-like kinetic model was derived from the assumed reaction mechanism. Several batch oxidation experiments were carried out to study the oxidation kinetics. The experiments included three values of the initial concentration of meta-xylene and four values of reaction temperature. The developed model parameters were determined in a nonlinear optimization, minimizing the difference between the simulated and experimental time evolutions of the product compostions obtained in a batch oxidation reactor, where the gas and liquid phases were well mixed. The experimental results cannot be interpreted by the empirical n-th order kinetics, but can be interpreted by the kinetic model proposed in this work. It means the kinetic model proposed in this work reveals the reaction mechanism. (C) 2008 American Institute of Chemical Engineers.

Abstract:A new chiral manganese complex (C1) bearing a tetradentate nitrogen ligand containing chiral bipyrrolidine and benzimidazole moieties was prepared. The structure of C1 was confirmed by ESI-MS and crystallography. This manganese complex is an active catalyst for the asymmetric epoxidation of various olefins with excellent conversion (up to 99%) and high enantiomeric excess (up to 96% ee) with hydrogen peroxide as the oxidant in the presence of 2-ethylhexanoic acid or acetic acid. Compared with previous structurally similar manganese complexes with different diamine backbones (C2, cyclohexanediamine; C3, diamine from L-proline), C1 showed improved asymmetric induction, especially for simple olefins such as styrene derivatives and substituted chromene. The possible reasons for the improvement of the ee values are discussed in the text on the basis of the crystal structures of the manganese complexes.

Abstract:N,N'-dimethyl-N,N'-bis(2-pyridylmethyl)ethane-1,2-diamine(mep) and the corresponding mep-MnIIOTf2 complex was synthesized and this Manganese complex was applied to the monoepoxidation of 1,3-butadiene.The results demonstrate that the direct liquid-phase epoxidation of 1,3-butadiene with dilute hydrogen peroxide in the presence of Manganese Complex under mild conditions can produce EPB with high activity and selectivity.The mild reaction conditions and the usage of aqueous H2O2 as the oxidant provide a convenient and environmentally benign method for the preparation of EPB and the corresponding downstream products.

Abstract:Bioinspired manganese complexes of N-4 ligands and graphene oxide (GO) synergistically catalyze the highly enantioselective epoxidation of olefins (up to 99% ee), which is a rare example with GO as a co-catalyst in asymmetric catalysis. GO as a new and key additive not only successfully functions in catalytic amounts, but also has a positive effect for improving the enantioselectivity of the asymmetric epoxidation compared with the traditional stoichiometric organic carboxylic acid method [e.g., chalcone, 95% ee (3.5 mg GO) vs. 84% ee (5 equiv., 75 mg acetic acid), ethyl cinnamate, 84% ee (3.5 mg GO) vs. 19% ee (5 equiv., 75 mg acetic acid)]. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) spectra of GO before and after the reaction indicate that the intensities of C-O become stronger after the reaction, which may have a certain relationship with hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and gives a reasonable rationale for the large consumption of H2O2. Also, part of the hydrogen peroxide was used for the oxidation of GO.

Abstract:A highly efficient strategy for the enantioselective oxidation of methylene C-H of spirocyclic oxindoles and dihydroquinolinones has been established, in which an earth-abundant manganese catalyst and hydrogen peroxide are used. Noteworthy, the manganese catalyst can be applied to the asymmetric hydroxylation of spirocyclic 2,3-dihydroquinolin-4-ones with 94-99% ee.

Abstract:The enantioselective epoxidation of olefin by MnII(R,R-PMCP)(OTf)2, H2O2 and H2SO4 was explored by DFT calculations and experiments. Theoretical results suggest that [MnV(O)(R,R-PMCP)(SO4)]+ species with a triplet ground spin state serves as the active species for the olefin epoxidation. It can be generated by the H2SO4 assisted O-O heterolysis of MnIII(OOH) species. MnIII-persulfate is also involved in this system, but it cannot promote the olefin epoxidation directly, preferring instead to transform into MnV(O). Actually, the asymmetric epoxidation reactions with H2O2/H2SO4 or Oxone provide similar enantioselectivity in the presence of manganese catalyst. These observations further support the transformation of MnIII-persulfate to MnV(O) species.

Abstract:Developing efficient catalytic systems for water contamination removal is a topic of great interest. However, the use of heterogeneous catalysts faces challenges due to insufficient active sites and electron cycling. In this study, results from first-principles calculations demonstrate that dual reaction centers (DRCs) are produced around the Cu and Mn sites in Cu1.0/Mn1.0-ZnO due to the electronegativity difference. Experimental results reveal the material with DRCs greatly enhances electron transfer efficiency and significantly impacts the oxidation and reduction of peroxymonosulfate (PMS). In addition, the self-consistent potential correction (SCPC) method was introduced to correct the energy and charge of charged periodic systems simulating a catalytic process, resulting in more precise catalytic results. Specifically, the material exhibits a preference for adsorbing negatively charged PMS anions at electron-deficient Mn sites, facilitating PMS oxidation for the generation of 1O2, and PMS reduction around the electron-rich Cu for the formation of •OH and SO4•-. The major reactive oxygen species is 1O2, showcasing effective performance in various degradation systems. Overall, our work provides novel insights into the persulfate-based heterogeneous catalytic oxidation process, paving the way for the development of high-performance catalytic systems for water purification.

Abstract:A series of Mn/Cu cosubstituted ZSM-5 (Zeolite Socony Mobil–5) with different Mn/Cu molar ratios were synthesized by a one-step heteronuclear substitution hydrothermal method. Singly substituted Mn- and Cu-ZSM-5 compounds were also prepared. The catalytic oxidation performance of hexane and the catalyst surface physicochemical properties over each catalyst were investigated to determine the reaction activity, the main influencing factors and the mechanism for hexane oxidation. Part of the framework Mn of ZSM-5 was substituted by Cu2+ during Mn/Cu cosubstitution, facilitating the generation of isolated and/or framework Cu2+ and extraframework ultrafine hollow spherical MnOx nanoclusters, and increasing the low-temperature reducibility and the amount and transfer capacity of superficial lattice oxygen. Mn-Cu-HZ(1:1) with an appropriate Mn/Cu cosubstitution ratio exhibited the best catalytic oxidation performance, mainly because it has the most superficial lattice oxygens, a relatively high transfer capacity, the highest low-temperature reducibility and suitable acidity. Synergetic catalysis could occur between isolated and/or framework Cu2+ and ultrafine MnOx nanoclusters via a Mars-Van Krevelen (MvK) mechanism. A reaction route for hexane oxidation over Mn-Cu-HZ(1:1) was proposed based on the in situ DRIFTS and GC–MS results. This work provides new insights into the design of VOC degradation catalysts.

Abstract:We have studied the mechanism of propene epoxidation with O-2-H2O mixture on Au-7/alpha-Al2O3(0001) using global minimum approach, density functional theory (DFT), and ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) methods. It is found that water can easily dissociate on coordinatively unsaturated surface Al sites to form a hydroxylated Al2O3 surface. The Au-7 cluster on such a surface prefers anchoring at bare Al sites and transfers from upright to flat structures with a decrease of surface hydroxyl groups. The activation of molecular oxygen via a hydroperoxyl (OOH) intermediate (i.e., O-2 abstracting a hydrogen atom from coadsorbed water) is identified to be a feasible pathway from both AIMD simulations and static DFT calculations. Additional water promotes the H-transfer process by constructing a hydrogen bonding chain with reactants. The resulting OOH turns out to be a key oxidative species for subsequent propene epoxidation. It can either dissociate into atomically oxygen species to epoxide propene or combine with propene directly, forming an important *C3H6OOH species that could be easily transformed to epoxypropane. study reveals the important role of water in propene epoxidation and may stimulate further exploration and the usage of O2-H2O mixture as oxidizing agent in other oxidation reactions.
Quantitative Insights into the Reaction Mechanism for the Direct Synthesis of H 2 O 2 over Transition Metals: Coverage-Dependent Microkinetic Modeling

Abstract:The direct synthesis is the most promising alternative method for the production of hydrogen peroxide, and the bottleneck is still unsolved. The breakthrough lies in elusive reaction mechanism issues. In this work, advanced coverage-dependent kinetic modeling is combined with the energetics from first-principles calculations to investigate the formation of H2O2 over transition metals. We show that the adsorbate–adsorbate interactions considerably affect the reaction mechanism of synthesis of hydrogen peroxide on Pd(111). Without the coverage effect, O2 is likely to go through the direct dissociation mechanism, and water is the major product. When the coverage effects are included, the dissociations of O–O and O–OH bonds are significantly inhibited, and on the contrary, the hydrogenations of O2 and OOH are promoted, leading to the production of H2O2. We demonstrate that the reaction temperature induces strong variations in the coverage of intermediates, which in turn causes changes in product selectivity. Being consistent with the operando experiment, our kinetic simulations indicate that the H2/O2 partial pressure ratio has great effects on H2O2 selectivity and the reaction rate of H2O2 is lower under hydrogen-rich (oxygen-lean) and oxygen-rich (hydrogen-lean) conditions, which is highly related to the intermediate coverage. The same approach is also applied to other important relevant metals, i.e., Cu(111), Au(111), PdAu, and PdHg alloys, and the trends of activity and selectivity have been obtained.

Abstract:Sulfate radical-based advanced oxidation processes (SR-AOPs) have received increasing attention as viable technology for recalcitrant organics removal from polluted waters. As for heterogeneous catalyst, it is crucial to reveal the effect of morphology on its catalytic activity and mechanism, providing guidelines for rational design of morphology-dependent catalysts. Hence, in this study, we selected manganese oxyhydroxide (MnOOH) as the peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activator and synthesized different morphological MnOOH with the same crystal structure. The catalytic activity of MnOOH follows: nanowires > multi-branches > nanorods. Different morphological MnOOH had different physical and chemical characterization such as specific surface area, Lewis sites, ζ-potential and redox potential, which played positive roles in catalytic activity of MnOOH as PMS activator. Unexpectedly, it was found that ζ-potential was more crucial than specific surface area, redox potential and Lewis sites. Notably, nanowires exhibited higher positive zeta potential, which was favor of promoting interfacial reactivity between HSO5− and surface of MnOOH. Furthermore, •OH, SO4•−, O2•− and 1O2, were involved in the MnOOH/PMS system. Moreover, the cycle of Mn (III)/Mn (II) accelerated MnOH+ formation. This study provided a new understanding of manganese-catalyzed peroxymonosulfate activation and elucidated the relationships between morphology of catalyst and its catalytic activity.

Abstract:A series of Fe(III) and Mn(III) complexes containing N4 non-porphyrin pyridine-2-carboxamido ligands have been synthesized. Their catalytic abilities in epoxidation and the effects of reaction conditions such as temperature, solvent have been studied, leading to the highest yield of 92% for 4-methoxystyrene by using [Mn(bbpc)Cl(DMF)] (H2bbpc=1,2-bis(4′-tert-butylpyridine-2′-carboxamido)-4,5-dichlorobenzene) as catalyst.
Spectroscopic Properties and Reactivity of a MnIII‐hydroperoxo Complex that is Stable at Room Temperature

Abstract:Manganese catalysts that activate hydrogen peroxide have seen increased use in organic transformations, such as olefin epoxidation and alkane C−H bond oxidation. Proposed mechanisms for these catalysts involve the formation and activation of MnIII‐hydroperoxo intermediates. Examples of well‐defined MnIII‐hydroperoxo complexes are rare, and the properties of these species are often inferred from MnIIIalkylperoxo analogues. In this study, we show that the reaction of the MnIII‐hydroxo complex [MnIII(OH)(6Medpaq)]+ (1) with hydrogen peroxide and acid results in the formation of a dark‐green MnIII‐hydroperoxo species [MnIII(OOH)(6Medpaq)]+ (2). The formulation of 2 is based on electronic absorption, 1H NMR, IR, and ESI‐MS data. The thermal decay of 2 follows a first order process, and variable‐temperature kinetic studies of the decay of 2 yielded activation parameters that could be compared with those of a MnIII‐alkylperoxo analogue. Complex 2 reacts with the hydrogen‐atom donor TEMPOH two‐fold faster than the MnIII‐hydroxo complex 1. Complex 2 also oxidizes PPh3, and this MnIII‐hydroperoxo species is 600‐fold more reactive with this substrate than its MnIII‐alkylperoxo analogue [MnIII(OOtBu)(6Medpaq)]+. DFT and time‐dependent (TD) DFT computations are used to compare the electronic structure of 2 with similar MnIII‐hydroperoxo and MnIII‐alkylperoxo complexes.

Abstract:We report experimental and mechanistic understanding of methanol oxidation to produce methyl formate using CuO/TiO2-spindle composite as a promising photocatalyst under mild conditions with over 97% conversion and 83% selectivity. The catalysts are obtained via precise depositing of CuO nanoclusters (size: ~ 3.5 nm) at the {101} facet of the TiO2 to optimally tune exciton recombination through oxygen vacancies generation, evidenced by photoluminescence and Raman spectroscopy measurements. The turnover frequency (TOF) and the apparent quantum efficiency (AQE) of the 7%CuO/TiO2-spindle composites reach up to 23.8 molmethanol·gcat−1·h−1 and 55.2% at 25 °C, respectively, which are substantially higher than these previously reported photocatalysts. Further, the in-situ attenuated total reflection infrared spectroscopy analysis reveals that the methanol oxidation most likely takes place through the conversion of adsorbed methoxy (CH3O*) to formaldehyde (CHO*) intermediate, a subject of major debate for a long time. The adsorbed formaldehyde (CHO*) thus produced reacts with another CH3O* species in its close proximity to form the final product of methyl formate. Results of this study provide insights into the reaction mechanism, and offer guidelines to systematically develop and apply photocatalysts for methanol conversion and related reactions via surface engineering.

Abstract:In this work, we described an electron-rich manganese mesoPYBP catalyst, Mn-SR-mesoPYBP(ClO4)2, by introducing electron-donating substituents on the mesoPYBP ligand. We optimized the catalytic performance in olefin epoxidation with H2O2 in the presence of acetic acid. The electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and cyclic voltammetry (CV) studies supported that an electronic effect could stabilize the high-valent intermediates in the catalytic cycles of the catalyst, which largely improved the catalytic performance and the reactivity of olefin epoxidation.

Abstract:In the peroxone process (O-3/H2O2), (OH)-O-center dot yield ratio with respect to O-3 consumption was low due to the competition experiments. Singular effectiveness of Co-Ce as a supporting ligand in the interface of ozone-H2O2-catalysts and related complexes formed on catalysts enhanced the electron transfer between ozone chain reaction and various chemical state of Ce/Co. A computationally determined stereochemical structure corroborated that the Co-Ce synergistic effect led to the region around Co atom (electron donor) with low Gibbs free energy to form (OH)-O-center dot. Meanwhile, reactive oxygen species (ROSs) were tend to attack the sites with very negative natural population charge or high frontier electron density (FED) values of sulfamethazine (SMT) by LC-MS/MS and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Benefiting from the unique superoxide complexes and synergetic effect of Co-Ce, the Co10Ce10@MCM-48 catalysts showed superior performance of SMT mineralization (64.1 %, 120 min), which resolved the low-efficient ROSs generation in bare peroxone reaction.
