Abstract:As a common technology of high performance liquid chromatography,ion chromatography has developed rapidly since it has been invented and has broad applications in detecting a variety of inorganic and organic anions and cations.Combined with electrochemical amperometric detection,the scope of testing has been greatly widened.This paper summarizes the use of ion chromatography-electrochemical amperometric detection in food analysis,the problems and improved programs of ion chromatography coupled with three electrochemical amperometric detection technologies and the future development of the methodology.

Abstract:Ion mobility spectroscopy is a technique to characterize compounds based on the differences in the migration of sample ions under the combined action of electric field and air flow. Ions can be separated according to their quantity of electric charge, mass, size and shape. Meanwhile, the collision cross section of the ions can also be calculated to obtain chemical compound structural information, which has shown excellent performance in separating isomers of substances. In recent years, a variety of ion mobility technologies combined with mass spectrometry technology have emerged, and been widely used in food, biology, medicine, environment and other fields. In this paper, the types and working principles of ion mobility spectroscopy are introduced, the advantages and disadvantages of various types of instruments are analyzed, and the application of ion mobility spectrometry, liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry multidimensional combination in analyzing and identifying nutritive and active ingredients and chemical hazards in food is reviewed. The application prospect and development trend of this technology are also prospected.

Abstract:Ion chromatography is a technique commonly used to separate strongly polar and ionizable substances; it can be used to separate, identify, and quantify ionizable compounds in complex samples when coupled with mass spectrometry, and is currently being used in the application of food analysis, drug analysis, metabolomics and clinical poisoning analysis. Herein, we review the development of ion chromatography-mass spectrometry (IC-MS), its progress over the past 20 years, and future trends in the abovementioned areas. The IC-MS research progress and applications for the determination of inorganic anions, organic acids, polar pesticides, biogenic amines, and sugars in the food field are discussed. Drug analysis applications are discussed mainly in relation to the analysis of drug impurities, identifying drug degradation products, and determination of plasma concentration, while the separation and analysis of strongly polar metabolites, such as organic acids, sugar phosphates, and nucleotides in biological matrices are discussed in relation to metabolomics. Advances in the analysis of strongly polar or ionizable toxic compounds, such as alkyl methylphosphonic acid, methylphosphonic acid, glyphosate, 3-nitropropionic acid, and indandione rodenticides, are mainly discussed in clinical poisoning analysis field. This paper is expected to become a useful reference for the further expansion and application of IC-MS in the life and health fields.

Abstract:Ion chromatography (IC) plays a crucial role in urine analysis for diverse medical diagnoses. This paper reviews a comprehensive investigation into urine pretreatment techniques, as well as the design and development of IC systems for the measurement of various chemicals. Prior to analysis, urine samples commonly undergo pretreatment procedures such as dilution, filtration, purification, and concentration. These steps effectively eliminate interfering factors and facilitate the accurate and sensitive analysis of ultra-trace components. To separate and quantify different chemical elements or ions present in urine, a range of homemade or commercially available columns coupled with various detectors were employed. This study focuses on the analysis of chemicals such as heavy metals, halogens, pesticides, drugs, and other essential or toxic substances by IC methods.

Abstract:This review provides some important progress in ion chromatography (IC), which includes Reagent-Free IC system, novel valve switching part, weakly ionized organic acid analysis, novel IC columns for fast analysis, IC coupled with pre-treatment technology, inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and IC coupled with hydride generation-atomic fluorescence spectrometry (HG-AFS), as well as IC applications in bioanalysis and pharmaceutical analysis.The review also introduces briefly the recent developments of IC in China, such as research of IC hardware technology, modification of instrument regulation, development of standard methods and revision of Chinese Pharmacopoeia.

Abstract:Ion chromatography and related techniques have been the most popular separation methods used in the determination of organic and inorganic anions and cations, predominantly in water and wastewater samples. Making progress in their development and introducing new stationary phases, methods of detection and preparation of samples for analyses have given rise to the broadening of their analytical range. Nowadays, they are also used for substances that are not ionic by nature but can convert to such forms under certain conditions. These encompass, among others, carbohydrates, whose role and significance in humans' lives and environment is invaluable. Their presence in the air is mostly due to the industrial burning of biomass for energy production purposes. In addition, the content of sugars in plants, fruits and vegetables, constituting the base of human diets, affects our health condition. Given that, there is not only a need for their determination by means of routine methods but also for searching for novel analytical solutions. Based on literature data from the past decade, this paper presents the possibilities and examples of applications regarding ion chromatography and related techniques for the determination of carbohydrates in environmental samples, biomass and plants constituting food or raw materials for food production. Attention has been paid to the virtues and limitations of the discussed separation methods in this respect. Moreover, perspectives on their development have been defined.

Abstract:In recent years, a trend toward instrument miniaturization has led to the development of new and sophisticated analytical systems, such as nano-liquid chromatography (nano-LC), which has enabled improvements of sensitivity, as well as chromatographic resolution. The growing interest in nano-LC methodology has resulted in a variety of innovative and promising applications. In this article, we review the applications of nano-LC separation methods coupled with mass spectrometry in the analysis of food and environmental samples. An assessment of sample preparation methods and analytical performance are provided, along with comparison to other, more established analytical techniques. Three main groups of compounds that are crucial for food safety assessment are considered in this review: pharmaceuticals (including antibiotics), pesticides, and mycotoxins. Recent practical applications of the nano-LC method in the determination of these compounds are discussed. Furthermore, we also focus on methods for the determination of various environmental contaminants using nano-LC methods. Future perspectives for the development of nano-LC methods are discussed.

Abstract:Ion chromatography IC has been a well-established technique for the analysis of ionic samples. The aqueous solution used for IC eluent is well suited for bioanalysis in relative to common liquid chromatography. This is especially true for capillary ion chromatography CIC due to its advantage of small sample needed. CIC is generally divided into three categories including open tubular packed and monolithic. In this review the recent progress of CIC is summarized based on the development of several key components associated with packed column-based system. The development of open tubular ion chromatography is also reviewed.

Abstract:Abstract Gas chromatography-ion mobility spectrometry (GC-IMS) is an emerging analytical technique that has the advantages of fast response, high sensitivity, simple operation, and low cost. The combination of the fast speed and resolution of GC with the high sensitivity of IMS makes GC-IMS play an important role in the detection of food volatile substances. This paper focuses on the basic principles and future development trend, and the comparative analysis of the functions, similarities and differences of GC-IMS, GC-MS and electronic nose in the detection of common volatile compounds. A comprehensive introduction to the main application of GC-IMS in food volatile components: fingerprint identification of sample differences and detection of characteristic compounds. On the basis of perfecting the spectral library, GC-IMS will have broad development prospects in food authentication, origin identification, process optimization and product classification, especially in the analysis and identification of trace volatile food flavor substances.

Abstract:With the improvement of food safety requirements, rapid, nondestructive, accurate, and high-throughput determination of volatile ingredients plays an important role in the analysis area. Owing to the advantages of high separation efficiency, high sensitivity, no sample pretreatment requirement, and fast response, gas chromatography–ion mobility spectrometry (GC–IMS) is important in the nondestructive and rapid detection of volatile organic compounds in the fields of biology, pathology, and food science. In the end, current GC–IMS applications in food safety control and quality analysis are systematically reviewed based on developments in working principles, experimental processes, and methods in cheminformatics and bioinformatics. In addition, the latest developments and advances, practical challenges and limitations, and requirements for GC–IMS applications are also critically discussed, providing new insights into GC–IMS application in food science.

Abstract:Amino acids analysis is an important issue to food, pharmacy, and clinical diagnosis. Ion pair chromatography analysis (IPC) technology has the advantages of simple operation and high sensitivity, and the impurities of deriving can be avoided. The working principles, the factors and the characteristics of using perfluorinated carboxylic acids as ion pair reagent are described. This article emphasizes the research advances in amino acids analysis of food, pharmacy, and clinical diagnosis with IPC technology, and the application prospects of this technology are reviewed.
